Wouldn't he want a weapon that works in any situation? Chakrams perhaps?
Chakrams seem like something that would take years of learning to become decent at. Something that both as a leader and merchant he would not have or had, not to mention having to find a teacher for such an exotic weapon. Where a halberd or normal spear should be simpler to learn and we could have a host of teachers to work with.

Edit* plus any quick unicorn could just catch them with telekinesis.

Plan Steady our Claws wins, no contest. Give me some time to do the rolls and write up the results.

In the meantime: what sort of weapon do you think our Merchant King would wield, both as a means of defense and a symbol of his office? A sword? A war axe? A warhammer? Discuss.

I'd go for sword, as a merchant you'd want to appear unarmed so not to scare away potential customers. So you'd carry something that could be hidden by clothing or angling the body. Then when some cocky bandit walks forth to bully you into handing over the good, *slice*.

Somthing like a short sword could make sense for a merchant.

I would prefer a single handed war hammer, but it would make much more sense for him to have a sword, since I don't think it would make much sense for a merchant to have experience using war hammers. Unless he familiar with clubs or something and decides to try and adjust to a war hammer.

Two things to keep in mind: many of your people are hunters by trade, and thus already have a certain familiarity with a bow. This means that you don't have to worry too much about the costs and time it takes to train them.

And while you may be facing a potential war with your neighboring states, in the near future the monsters that inhabit the lands around you are going to be your biggest threat.
That's good news. I still think javelins are the better choice, due to the larger size of the projectile, and the lack of need to have a long range. I suppose it'll come down to how well a griffon can throw things.

As for Garrick's weapon, something simple and practical would best fit his profession, so a unadorned sword would be best.

I wasn't really sure how to handle piety actions for this quest. If there's a lot of reader interest I'll try to make religion and spirituality a bigger aspect, but for now we're operating under separation of church and state.
honestly I thought Piety was going to be replaced with magic since magic and tech seem to be mostly separate things in mlp. At least to me.

I think an axe or some kind of weapon that has utility. I mean he wasn't a warrior so if he could have a weapon that could be used to protect himself and also serve as a tool to help him survive (so in this case for chopping wood) would make since to me. Plus if we can get throwing axes we can give our rising king some range as well.

Not to mention that if we can trust them enough they would make powerful ambush units in the mountains.
Judging by how the dogs were mentioned as a problem, I get the feeling that any attempt to ally them would be to the detriment of our relationship with the nobles and the public. When it comes down to it, I'd rather have the certain loyalty of the majority, over the dubious loyalty of the minority.

Under different circumstances that might have been the case, but Griffons can't use magic and are thus limited to tech and what enchanted items they can acquire from the more magically inclined races.

I was thinking more along the lines of magic theory... or just understanding how magic effects the world.

Guess it could just be an unlockable stat for griffons or just something that ever other race has. And by unlockable I mean something like they just don't have it unless we open our kingdom up to other races that can use it or find some way to harvest magic either by building a machine that can siphon magic from the world or getting their talons on some kind of artifact that does something similar.

If you play your cards right those could certainly be options for you.

Right now you're just trying to open up a dialogue with a few of the less aggressive packs. A few of the more militant Griffons might object but most will be fine with the possibility of fewer raids on their lands.

As for an alliance...well we'll see. That's still a ways off in the future, if at all.

Honestly Magical theory isnt that useful for us and the effort would probably be better spent focusing on the stuff we can actually use like tech.
