@Questor What happens if you try to make runes onto orichalcum, or putting runes next to an item made out of the material? Do they just fail, or are there horrifying interactions?
In the case of carving runes onto Orichalcum: No horrifying reaction, just failure. The anti-magic properties of the Orichalcum cancel out the effects of the runes.

Waving some Orichalcum around another, more mundane object endowed with runes tends to result in a temporary suppression of the rune's effects, only for it to return to full strength when taken away.

Waving an Orichalcum rod around the Crystal Heart produced no effect, at least none that you could discern. Then again, maybe it just wasn't enough Orichalcum?

Somehow i feel like putting orichalcum near the crystal heart should not be allowed. For obvious reasons.

Alright so no runes on Orichalcum weapons or Armor then, looks like we'll have to make a separate order for Knights that use runes.
Good idea!

In fact why not make a few new orders.

Order of the Runed Shield (Defense focused rune wielders. Walking barriers)

Order of the Runed Staff (Basically ranged rune based artillery and rune based battle magic. Wielding staves with dozens of runes carved in for dozens of various affects)

Order of the Runed Wand (Battle field support and specialists with them using single use rune wands made specifically to be cheap and easy to mass produce as well as a few key high power wands that match their specialization often dealing with support)

I'm honestly surprised the crystal ponies allowed this experiment AND that we were willing to try it, though i guess if we had already tried with other objects with runes and saw that they didn't break it would make sense.

I just imagined everyone arguing about it very loudly, and then Merlin just picks up the rod and walks right up to the Heart and starts waving it around.
No one notices for several minutes. Merlin is then banned from the Heart without supervision.
Later it is found out no one even contacting the Emperor about this particular experiment. An error in filing is blamed and three clerks are fired.
They are rumored to have found employment in Canterbury.

(This might actually make a fun omake)

We can use this for stuff. For example, a rune that makes heat or light, and a tiny bit of orichalcum as an 'off' switch. This would give us a lamp or heater type thing. We can also make clockwork mechanisms and such to automate when a rune is turned off or on.

The question is what rune effects do we have right now that would most benefit from an on/off switch?

For bonus points, they only noticed Merlin when he started to outright whack the Crystal Heart with the rod, producing loud gongs.

How big is the empire in terms of size?(with and without the crystal protectorate)and how much population do we have(we already have pretty good quality troops but drowning enemies in troops is a strength as well

I suspect that the Crystal heart is inert right now. There is no real magic being pumped in to it, and no Alicorn or Princess of love to correctly utilize it effectively. As such, it will remain unaffected by orichalicum or other such magic dampening materials.

As for runes itself, the sky is honestly the limit. Magic is magic, and can be utilized in any form we may wish, as long as it follows the rules.

If i remeber correctly when we first united the empire at the beginning i think it was said that it was around the size of france or germany, something like that but youll want to ask @Questor to get a definite answer and in terms of that quantity thing while we could probably bolster our army a bit more i doubt we can field the type of numbers your thinking of.

The Crystal heart actually have a lot in common with the Heart of Atlantis from The Lost Empire. Both have amazing powers which they give to they peoples, as well as both having an conscious. They are both 'alive' in a way.

I actually wonder if the Crystal heart is really from space like the Heart of Atlantis originally was. Maybe it crashed into where the Crystal Empire would later be founded, discover by ancient ponies, and the rest is history.

The Heart Of Atlantis was from space? What movie did they say that in?

The Heart of Atlantis is a comet fragment.

Could you give us a link? Because I am having trouble believing it

It is a comet fragment. From the Wiki.

Around 10,000 BC, a huge comet passed over the Earth. A piece broke off and landed in land belonging to Atlantis. Upon examination, the civilians uncovered the great properties it possessed. In time, they built their entire culture, civilization, and empire upon it. Since it is the sole source of their power, it is called the Heart of Atlantis.

Well dang..... Is anyone else suspecting that the crystal empire used to be an island nation?

Because holy crud if this doesnt work extremely well as an expy....

Interesting. I guess that's from material other than the movies? The wiki lists books and a game as material, and I don't remember them mentioning a comet in the movies. Maybe my memory is just bad though. I need to rewatch the movies someday.

Huh. Well. Um. That might actually explain a lot about it's odd behavior compared to other magical artifacts. But why love then? Is it a case of love being the most powerful emotion of its people, or was it shaped that way?

No idea my guy. But when we investigated it we found thousands of small ancient runes carved on it that not even Merlin could figure so maybe it's that way by design.
