If it wouldn't be making this process even more drawn out, I'd honestly be in favor of having determining what the pun acronym stands for be a separate vote. I'd also be in favor of just leaving it to Boney to pick one he likes. I don't actually care all that much about what it stands for so much as having it be a good pun acronym, which I just don't think WEBIR is compared to WEBER.

I mean, for me personally the branch name being accurate is more important than a perfect acronym. I'd happily vote for something like "The Karak Eight Peaks College of Interdisciplinary Studies" despite the acronym being KEPCIS.

Yeah, but she made the rooms of calamity spell out an acronym, but only made their names accessible to whoever could go to them physically. She has a taste for subtlety too, and WEBER just isn't.

WEBIR just isn't a good compromise. For me it fails in both directions. It's useless as a bacronym to the point that I'd brather vote for something like the KEPCIS you just proposed and I'd never vote for it if acronyms weren't a thing because I am not a big fan of either Branch or Intersectional being part of the name. I'm just okay with them.

There are words that begin with E that would be more appropriate than esoteric, but esoteric is the winning option that spells WEBER so it's what I'm voting for.

Alright, so to summarize—what qualities do we want in our branch name?
- It should be a pun, alliterate, or otherwise have style as expressed with previous naming schemes.
- It should accurately reflect the charter and type of organization it is (research institute college branch, particularly interdisciplinary and collaborative).
- It should reference the location.
I think WEBER, WEBIR, TSS, WEIRD, and KNIGHT meet all of those criteria to varying degrees, we're just disagreeing on what amount.

I don't have a good way to quantify it or prove it, but after dealing with a lot of academic institutions (pretty much every professor these days comes up with a name for their lab, usually with snappy acronym, too) WEBIR sounds the most like an actual institution that just happens to have a buried pun. The others all seem a bit forced to me personally. The pronunciation concerns don't bother me either, for a couple reasons. The first is that it really isn't an issue in English, and since that's the language the quest is written in, that's how I tend to "hear" the words I read. Perhaps more persuasively to others, I can promise you that academic institutions/names stretch pronunciation all the time.
It's also more informative than "Esoteric," and specifically about the part we most care about - "Intersectional" is by far the most important part about what makes the branch college unique. I think it's a mistake not to highlight and emphasize that in the name.
