You know I'm not disappointed Waystones won, I'm more disappointed Markgraf lost if that makes sense (I amde peace with Bodyguard long ago).

Here's hoping people talking about freedom of AP with Waystones were right at least and we can finally get to Ulgu tongs and (fingers crossed) Ulgu ascension.

well fought everyone.

not quite what I wanted: a confident step into the 'big stage' as a de facto ruler of a province or as a player of the imperal court as the bodyguard

but Mathy wont be able to be a Dwarf-mountain hermit anymore, she is going to have to shake hands and make deals around the world.

will be fun.

Well it's not the option I wanted to win but I suppose at least it wasn't the option I disliked the most. I'm sure Boney will make it interesting even if I'm still mourning my preferred options.

I admit to feeling a little... melancholic for the lost opportunities, but I was going to feel that no matter what won.

That said, I'm quite excited to see how the waystones project plays out now.

Yeah but try telling that to the "ruling Sylvania will be AP intensive but somehow Waystones won't be" crowd :(
Ruling Sylvania, if we had a full council, would have a minimum input of 3 AP a turn. High enough that we wouldn't be able to fit the Nagarythe trip (which will take roughly 4 months/AP) in without overwork.

I expect Waystones to have a minimum more along the lines of 1-2 AP a turn.

The maximums are certainly the same (6 AP per turn +occasional Overwork) but that difference in minimum means a much greater chance for non-job-related research to happen.

Not that I'd have been unhappy with Markgraf - there was some cool job-related research to be done in that role. But there's more in Waystones.

So first two thoughts:

1: we are going to have to change around thread culture a bit when it comes to AP social actions and 'help someone with their job' actions.

they are going to be a priority, along with research, with this job, making/deeping connections, getting people on side for funding and resources. etc etc.

the 'social turn' is not going to affect the job. we need to spend AP to shake hands and make deals.

2: We need to get Max on board: His trait: Amanuensis: 'Maximilian is developing his ability to turn another's insights into the formal language of scholarship.' is way, way, way, way, too valuable for this project.

not even mechanically, but narratively. (sometimes Boeny limits what you can do without the right traits: see magic lightbulb comments.)

someone is going to have to do the math:

Mathy's crazy rambling + Runesmith 'bare-minimum information on anything that kind of looks like rune secrets' grumbling + elf mage 'every word has five meanings' riddles + whatever gets added from the cults, hegefolks, damals, ice witchs etc etc.

and somehow turn it all into = a coherent theory that others can copy. (ala Waaagh and Peace)

max is the man for that job. (as much as anyone deserves that hell....)

Well, seems like I wasn't too far off the money in my speculation that waystones would end up being the compromise vote. They've got a bit of everything for everyone -to echo wthat others are saying, it's not my favourite, but I'm reasonably content in that grumbly sense that one usually is when they compromise on something.

Brainstorming some "realistic" ideal endings for the Waystone project:
  1. We figure out how to restart deactivated Waystones in the Empire, creating an overall decrease in Beastmen Chaos blessing rates and/or demonic activity. This would be impossible to link to any single event, but magical theorists would all agree that it's probably important background stuff.
  2. We figure out how to cleanse Dhar-tainted Waystones, making them useless to Dark Magic users without having to destroy the Waystone. Say, in Sylvania?
  3. We figure out how to use Waystones for I N F R A S T R U C T U R E. This then requires us to have the know-how to build said infrastructure, but at least we could power it now! How about teleport towers with a whole bunch of uses per day to improve Imperial infrastructure and military readiness? Increased crop yields in half a province? A big superweapon to guard Blackfire pass?
  4. We figure out how to use Waystones to recharge Dawi runes. It's just like Vitae, but far more plentiful! Sure, mobilizing a Throng to guard Kragg and his centuries of stockpiled Altar Runes as he takes them all to a Imperial Waystone is expensive, but imagine having Kragg go crazy with his mightiest Runes even once a year?
  5. Eonir get something, I guess? I honestly don't really care and I don't like the idea of Imperial Waystones being siphoned off to help a non-allied polity, but it'll probably be needed to ensure their cooperation.

I'd say that there are multiple ways we could approach getting people on board with helping with Waystones. Charming them into helping is one way, but another is big damn hero-ing it up with the Protector to make us popular, and another is being so personally skilled that they think we're worth investing in.

There are loads of routes here, and lots of arguments that all kinds of things could help, from learning battle magic grade enchanting or Gazul Lore, to getting our arcane marks under control, to finding evidence of descent from a particularly adventurous runesmith.

What's not likely to change is that this is a hard problem, and that a wide variety of approaches may need to be tried.

Alright lurkers, back to the woodworks with us.

And have no doubt, kind readers, that this voting period must have been as cumbersome and tiring as organizing a real life event might be.

Seeing how QM was expected (by his own reckoning, if no one else's) to actively follow the entire discussion, as well as how things could indeed have gone sour, I can only thank kind BoneyM and the Staff for their efforts.

Take a breather, if you will. Us thousand-strong fools certainly can wait for the next update!

I think we don't even know what the starting line looks like.

also, we researchers now: looking for outcomes is bad practice! 🤓

We poke
We watch and record
and then We poke a different way.
and repeat.

lets get data points before we look for results.

Well 1) They seem to believe that they own some waystones that they aren't getting use of, so it might not be from Imperial Waystones
and
2) If this project works there's a very strong chance they'll count as an allied polity. And if they're running off Imperial Waystones and the empire knows how to turn those on and off? They'll be very reluctant to change that status.
