Correct, Ranald has nothing against Rulers, only against those that don't look out for their people.
Which is more than they'd like to admit, hence his reputation as the God of Rebellion.
Also why he's straight banned in Bretonnia.

Edit: Not to say Bretonnia is full of abusive nobles (we don't actually know in quest), they just don't want peasants getting ideas.

I now have little interest in tutoring mandred, alas.

Fighting the skaven, edgelady, and loremaster at large are now my top contenders. Altho I also kinda want to do sabbatical to get the rest of the stuff of the way.

And there's no en masse enchantment anywhere in the setting, the bare minimum for any sort of enchantment is a month's effort from a skilled Wizard

I'm just imagining Mathilde finding a way to stamp enchantment onto mass-produces rifles/pistols, and the Dwarfen reaction. It's...intense. And not in a good way.

There's no point in taking one of the smaller titles in Sylvania when no one is going to inherit it and I don't like swamp town but any of the others wouldn't be terrible. It's kind of funny that several of the options involve working to solve another options problems for favors. I mean two different jobs involved the possibility of dealing with the Skaven under Wissenland and the Loremaster at Large mentioned that one of the problems we might be looking into was the border princess job.

I'm actually thinking that we should take a turn with Research Sabbatical as a cool down and then decide between the jobs that are still there. If not My top three are the Markgraf of Eastern Stirland, bodyguard and Tutor to Prince Mandred, and the Waystone Project. I'll catch up to the thread later.

[ ] Markgraf of Eastern Stirland

Returning to Sylvania as a complete badass to smack down the undead as hard as we can appeals to me, we can let the Elector Count of Stirland actually act like an Elector Count, maybe even give her legacy back to her if we get the chance whilst we do so. We are in range of K8P and the relationships and resources we invested in there and can use them to help wallap the undead, we can use our trade and spy infrastructure to help out economically and in counter espionage from the undead.

The option just seems to have to potential to include so much of what Mathy has been slowly building up. To me anyway.

Minimum time frame on Research sabbatical is like 3+ years. WoG says if you just want one or two research projects that sabbatical isn't the right choice for it.

Probably the former, but it would depend on the task at hand and how the thread decides to approach it.
I actually kind of hoped for some form of the latter, because one of my main appeals for that job is getting to interact with more and more varied Dawi. But if the chain of events is something like "We propose solving a Karak Norn issue -> Belegar approves and tells us the extent of the problem -> we come up with a solution over a couple of AP -> we visit Karak Norn to test our solution and talk to 1-3 characters there -> we go back home to report success or work on it more" then we won't really get to immerse ourselves in Karaz Ankor culture all that much.

In fact I was kind of thinking at some point how most of our time and projects in K8P we didn't actually have all that much direct contact with Dwarves other than Belegar and the Runesmiths (and Kazador during the Battle of the Caldera). I think the Karak Dum Expedition literally doubled the amount of named Dwarves we got acquainted with since taking on the mantle of Loremaster. I'm not saying that that's a problem on your side, just that, if we keep our current job title, I'm looking forward to up that number and look deeper into Dwarven psychology.
Even that will find takers eventually.
Oh sure. I'm just betting against their life expectancy.
I assure you that that high intrigue isn't a Mathilde exclusive trait. And did we not write the Queekish book and Winning the War Below so others will become just as capable in fighting skaven?
I don't think those books have been around for long enough for anyone to not only have understood them as well as the author, but also have built on that knowledge in a way that exceeds the intuitive information that the author wasn't able to fully convey.
Or to put it differently, I don't think that having our books in the library is enough to get a copy of all of our Skaven related traits. Just like I don't think that just because we read the Liber Mortis we would be as good a Necromancer or Undead vs Skaven general as the original Vanhel was.

Heidi might be the best possible choice for the empress, and definitely a major step from the previous one, her lack of "right" parents is a non issue for me.

Karaz-a-Karak might be meaning to take a poke at Mount Silverspear - when I met with the Grey Mountains Clans they let slip that they're apparently also in talks with Karaz-a-Karak.
How does this square with the previous assessment that the Karaz Ankor doesn't currently have the population base to support another Hold reclamation, as they couldn't populate it with enough dwarves to keep it even if they retook it? Does "take a poke at" have some non-reclamation meaning here?

The dwarfs will want to retake holds even if they don't have the population for it, some claimants have been waiting for their chance for millennia and with the recent success of K8P and Vlag this might seem like the best time for it.

And who knows, maybe that same atmosphere of hope will see a population boom in the next few decades, Kazador is proof that the population decline is cultural rather than biological.

I wonder if, while obviously angry that they got robbed, Gork and Mork are still kinda happy that their power made the runt finally get into a PROPPA SCRAP, so its still a win for them.
"That Ranald's a git, but roight cunnin', that 'un is."

"Did 'oo see 'im go up against the Foighty One? Proppa brutal, it was."

I really want Ranaldian High Priestess, seems like it might have similar Ranald shinies to the Bodyguard option, and bragging rights. Mathilde being able to flex her piety stat also sounds good to me.

Are the Eonir bankrolling the Waystone reasearch, or is this a personally directed project?
...this is an excellent question. @BoneyM, do we know whose budget we'd be billing if we opt for Waystone, or is that one of the first decisions we'd be making on the project, per the bit about how "The exact details of how a position will work will be negotiated with whoever oversees it once a decision is made"?

I don't disagree with you that we are the best for the job, but despite SV's tendencies, we cannot do everything.
This is one of the things that I believe that we are not the only one capable of doing.
Especially since, we have things like waystones on our plate where we could do more.

In my first post about this I brought the possibility that can spend actions consulting whoever is chosen for the job instead of doing everything ourselves.

@BoneyM would we be able to devote an action or two to consult whoever takes the job? Like reverse tutoring?

[1] Loremaster-at-Large of Karak Eight Peaks
-- All our stuff and most of our friends are already here. We've got a great research setup, and there's still lots of things to do. The post-retaking of K8P has been exciting enough for me, so I'm fine keeping on, but with more freedom for less influence.

[2] Markgraf of Eastern Stirland
-- A chance to try our hand at intense sleuthing & spying, and buff up our rulership skills.

[3] Spymaster of Wissenland
-- Support almost as strong as at K8P, a big challenge, reintigration into the Empire's culture, chance to cement ourselves as the greatest Imperial authority on the Skaven (currently alive, but with experience could be ever!)

[4] Border Princess of the Howling River
-- Like the Markgraf, except even more freedom, but still close relations with the dwarves

[5] Bodyguard and Tutor to Prince Mandred
-- Get a little bit of a greater Ranald focus, an inside track on directly influencing the Empire's future, big political backing to gain access to otherwise impossible lore/artifacts/etc.

[6] The Waystone Project
-- A capstone project for one's life. I'd prefer to save this one until later in life.

[7] Sinecure
-- I mean, things have been pretty solid in terms of research and adventure already. No need to go elsewhere.

[8] Nagarythe
-- We just came off of a long, exhausting adventure. Not quite ready to jump right into another one.

[9] Governor-General of Swamp Town
-- Like the Border-Princess, except nearly no limit on authority and chance for really esoteric encounters. Pretty tempted actually.

[10] Ambassador-at-Large to the Karaz Ankor
-- Seems like too heavy a dwarf focus and without direction.

[11] Ranaldian High Priest of Kislev
-- Really not interested in Kislev, or a move closer to actually Priestessing

My argument about this has been that even a basic question like that is completely up in the air, barring us using Belegar's Boon to ensure funding. Of course Mathilde has no idea who would fund it or more important who would be willing to fund it.

She can't even negotiate the exact details of how the position will work because there's no one to negotiate with. No "whoever oversees" to talk to.

She could realistically keep working for the rest of her life on most of these jobs.
True. On the other hand, some of them are going to be easier to retire from than others.

If we score some big victories against the Skaven as an Elector County's spymistress, we can say "I'd like to resign to focus on my research" with a fairly clean conscience. After five years of "Lady Magister Errant" among the dwarves we can say "I'd like to concentrate on the Waystones" or "I'd like to take a year's vacation."

My intuitive sense is that the Waystone project is going to be harder to turn away from, though that doesn't mean it's a bad idea.

  • We never solved the Sylvanian problem (Dhar is still present, going to keep result in mysterious evils)
    • If you prefer Waystones, you maybe should consider Sylvania. Waystones will almost certainly require at least visiting Sylvania, if not a longer a stay.
Why?
