We wouldn't want it to be too corrosive or it could hurt friendlies people and objects even if we turn the spell off. Ideally we would want it to be negligibly corrosive with the spell off and very corrosive with it on, by which point we've presumably evacuated all friendlies out of harm's way.

To be fair it is a really cool archetype/concept, I'm fine with it being in fiction and modern religions so long as we remember that it isn't a part of actual pre-modern history.
