Out of interest what did the D100 roll results actually mean individually? I get they determined whether Mathilde suffered moderate to death consequences from miscasting, did the 98 roll mean she suffered no miscasts at all during that portion of the rescue for instance?

Yes, each dice was a third of the rescues. A 100 would have meant something significant, a 98 was 'just' a non-failure.

[X] Scour the river banks for anything the bandits left behind

This lets us look for answers while remaining in relatively close proximity so we can assist in potential greenskin attack.

rule one: don't ask for mastery's Boney will give if they want to and that's it.

That wasn't asking for a mastery, that was asking if that was what he meant. Context.

That'd be one possibility. My usual method for things like that is coming up with a few different possibilities and rolling to see which happens.

Now I'm really curious how you would have handled the first roll being a 100 and the Second being 1. Would that 1 have still been death? Would they cancel each other out like a particle and anti particle meeting.

We have established that the list of individuals capable of this attack isn't large, and this changes the capability ranges.
Marienburg could do it, but it would take a substantial commitment of skill and resources. Said commitment would be tracable and worthy of special attention. A degree of attention which also would mean they should know who they were hitting, it would not make any sense if they invested so much resources to hitting an ironclad monitor with a sea mine and wind up blasting the wrong target. And the Okral have literally no reason to be involved in the canal, something which the dwarves on their council would have advised.

The Skaven could do it, are known to be previously active in the region, and would benefit from starting up a conflict between the Karaz Ankor and Marienburg, who'd be the first suspect.

The Chaos Dwarves could do it, but its the wrong body of water and they're largely uninvolved in these parts.

The Greenskins, Bretonnia, Border Princes, etc cannot do it.
The Empire could do it, but at a resource cost that largely rules out a Lone Gunman scenario, which would require someone to go against both state religion and national alliances with a powerful organization backing it.

The Vampires could do it but again, nontrivial effort, WHY would they do it other than be evil?

Druchii also would probably be able to do it, and they have the intrigue chops to undertake it as a gambit with a potential big payoff.

Mathilde isn't in the best shape right now after all that chain casting so let's just gather evidence for Johann to poke at with Tale Of Metal.

I don't feel like the condition we are in makes it a good idea to do scouting so lets do some relatively safe investigation instead. Besides best to get on with unraveling this mystery.

Man though.

What a fucking miracle this operation turned out to be, even if it started in tragedy.

Two thirds of the passengers survived and were present there, literally the maximum result on every die that was rolled to figure out survivors. The VIP was there, hundreds of them were there. And Mathilde clutched her chain-cast rolls and avoided getting splinched by a very risky blind insertion.

If this wasn't the biggest vindication of Belegar's policies there ever was, I don't know what is. All we need is to figure out how this happened and who gets to hold the ball for the oncoming Grudge and we'll have damage controlled the shit out of this disaster.

I think completely taking K8P is a bigger example. This only counts as a major example if it turns out the three hundred dwarves we rescued wouldn't have run out of air before conventional rescue could be brought to bare. That said it's still a big deal.

@BoneyM

iirc you said that there were about 600 people on the ship originally?
