The closest GM post I've been able to find to what you're talking about is this one. I haven't been able to find anything suggesting that allocating and furnishing rooms is a free action... but I guess I can throw that into the plan anyway, mark it (no action), and if we can't actually do it for no action then we simply don't do it.

Likewise I'm not sure that we can stick getting informants in the castle into a "vet the castle staff" action but I'll throw it in there anyway and the GM can correct me if it's inappropriate.
Cool cool. Hmm. Wonder if it's worth getting a blessing on the weapon box, before we travel? Can't hurt...

[x] Plan Backlog

Would we need to setup a room for studying enchanting and the like? Or the smithy in castle is enough?

I don't really understand why no one wants to pass the buck by allowing these weapons to be examined by the Emerald Mages or the Knights of Morr.

Unless we can have them thoroughly examined by competent institutions, we're effectively gambling with a pile of weapons which could be cursed, making them practically useless to us anyway.

Why not hand them over to say, the Knights of Morr, they find out which ones need to be destroyed/entombed, and which ones we can use. Split the non-cursed ones, and save an action.
We make a gesture of trust and reliance on arguably the most stalwart defender of Stirland, we save an action, and we avoid all risk altogether. Not to mention have the cursed ones disposed/guarded by someone who is most certainly not us.

We don't NEED one, but we probably want a dedicated laboratory in our base. It's just not a very high priority while we're engaged in the busywork of trying to do 10 years of intelligence networking in 3.

Already brought up:
-Knights of Morr - They will simply seal the whole lot away, because they're grave goods and thus should stay properly buried.

-Amethyst Order - The risk is threefold
--The weapons can be waylaid and stolen in transit unless we spend an action escorting them all the way to Altdorf
--The Amethyst Order will almost certainly get a fully accurate assessment, however, due to this they are almost certainly going to claim the best of the lot for personal assessment. Word of God is that out of this batch of 50 weapons, we will get back between 5 to 40 of them if we do this, assuming they aren't tainted.
--The weapons can be waylaid and stolen on the way back.

I made my case for the Amethyst order before, but its clear nobody else agrees(or at least, 3 people aren't going to outvote 10 any time soon) that losing some magic weapons is less important than making sure all of them are on the level.

Also, IIRC our count has asked us to look at them, not hand them over a potential treasure trove for Stirland to another order. If we still have doubts after looking ourselves, then sure, gets the Knights or whoever in.

Me: goes to bed as Boney is writing, figuring I'll read the update in the morning
Thread: Has update and seven more pages by then
Me: Wants to write new vote, also wants to write
Personally, I want to know how Van Hal's players reacted when Mathilde showed up at the Mound with a greatsword and used it to cut down skeletons almost as well as the PC and the Warrior-Priest.

But first I must dissent:
Also, having your wife be your spymaster is traditional for CK2 players
National attributes in CK2 are calculated as (Ruler's skill + advisor's skill + 1/2 spouse's skill), but if you marry one of your advisors, you only get their skill once, not once and a half. So no marrying your spymaster, that effectively reduces your Intrigue!
But if you're Pagan or Tribal, you're free to concubine your spymaster (concubine is a verb now) at no penalty, or as a Muslim ruler, take your spymaster as a secondary wife, because it's only the primary wife's attributes that figure into national attributes.

Man, I really wish we'd had time to fit in Undead Lore somewhere. But three actions of spy network and three actions of clearing one-offs (Marshal, Asp, barrow-weapons) is good too, and things don't seem urgent enough for overwork at present.

[ ] Weigh in - write-ins justifying a decision will have much greater weight. No action point expenditure; these are not actions, just giving your opinion to Van Hal. Choose one from each pair, or write in variations.
Interesting. I lean a little away from the currently leading plan here, though. (Voting is only different from Reason To Bits on the first question of loyalty, but I'm going to give my view on the two same votes anyway.)

[X] Answers Opportunity
-[X] PREDECESSOR LOYALTY: Their self-serving nature and incompetence only gave the Von Carsteins an opportunity.
--[X] Reasoning: The previous history of Stirland's rulers was a history of human bunglers, not a history of evil puppets. If they had been fully suborned, I think competent Von Carsteins would have moved more towards taking over; while less competent Von Carsteins would have revealed their hand more openly. The Stirlandian League in particular strikes me as a very human sort of corruption that vampires would have little interest in.
-[X] PREDECESSOR APPROACH: The rot lives on; we must excise it.
--[X] Reasoning: The evidence, particularly the hidden ledgers, speaks to me of long-term planning by an opposition that's still out there, working against us, and that possibly will turn to the Von Carsteins as they run out of other options, if they haven't already done so.
-[X] STIRLANDIAN LEAGUE: Do not clasp the snake to your bosom. Destroy the League.
--[X] Reasoning: If we had attempted to take control of the League at once, it might have been worth it at the time. Now, we have a replacement network of greater loyalty, as well the documentation to simply confiscate many the League's assets as we crack down on it, to the benefit of both the Count's own treasury and the rest of the province as a whole. The League's use to us has diminished, while its injury remains.

You can poke around in Altdorf and make purchases for your laboratory (or any other purpose) as a free action while you're there. Actually setting it all up and learning how to use it all will take an action, but you don't have to do it immediately.

I don't really understand why no one wants to pass the buck by allowing these weapons to be examined by the Emerald Mages or the Knights of Morr.

I have been entertained by how thoroughly the thread considers 'being used by anyone that's not us' as completely the same as 'being wasted'. Fitting with the character, too. And Van Hal would likely approve. Maybe the Amethyst Order may be able to use the weapons in a way better for the Empire as a whole, but it's not your job to work for the Empire as a whole. Your job is Stirland.

    [X] Answers Reasoned To Bits
-[X] PREDECESSOR LOYALTY: I believe that they were truly suborned by the Von Carsteins.
--[X] Loyalty Reasoning: The primary factors are, how agents of Drakenhof knew enough to move the ledgers, which should only be known to the prior count and his administration, how the Von Carstein aligned nobles knew we didn't have them, how the League benefited from the loss of the ledgers and the various undead and monsters literally buried within the castle at the barest inspection.
---[X] While the last factor could be achieved through incompetence or sloth, this does align with the former pieces, which points to a highly competent individual who knew they were in league with monsters. Either his loyalty lies with the monsters, or his greed lies beyond mortal means to fulfill.
-[X] PREDECESSOR APPROACH: The rot lives on; we must excise it.
--[X] The case of the stablehand to feed us poor information, and the Ledgers placed where they could be recovered intact, rather than much more simply burned or thrown in the river, points to further plots aimed at us rather than simple obscuration of loose ends. As such, the previous spymaster should be considered an active party rather than a simpler historical note.
-[X] STIRLANDIAN LEAGUE: Do not clasp the snake to your bosom. Destroy the League.
--[X] Intelligence wise, with what we know of their affiliates, the entire network's integrity is suspect, and its continued operations highlight the possibility of its former master still being in control, which would make it too easily suborned a source of deliberately bad information. Economically, the vast amounts of wealth running along the League has to be funding SOMETHING, and indications are that this is not to our benefit. If there were to be such a drain upon our economy, it should at least go towards paying for our operations rather than a mystery party's.

I honestly think that the other reasoning is reaching as fuck, and is making presumptions then using those presumptions to make presumptions. We know very little about either the Stirlandian League or the previous Spymaster, to claim otherwise is simply a lie. Thus don't act on information you don't possess; instead first seize the league and the former Spymaster if he lives. Then we can find out truly what's what, and if the League costs Stirland more than it helps then it can be subsequently dismantled. After all there's no reason for ones beliefs to remain static and stagnant when you're presented with new information.

There's also a benefit that it'd be dismantled with far greater efficiency after you've seized it as you'd know the size and extent it possesses along with the people involved from merchants to nobles, where as dismantling it from the outside means you're highly likely to miss things.

I prefer this plan to Backlog as Who Needs Letters is IMO essential. With us being able to discuss things in person it means we'll; be able to learn more about our mysterious backers than can be told by letter, get some magical advice on how to proceed as a Wizard, some general personal interactions with people we've spent decades with, and most importantly for our job we'll get advice on how to be a Spymaster from the Grey Order. Perhaps we'll even be told the location of some journeymen who we could recruit, given having a Grey Order mage on the council of an Elector Count should be prestigious for the order.

You can poke around in Altdorf and make purchases for your laboratory (or any other purpose) as a free action while you're there. Actually setting it all up and learning how to use it all will take an action, but you don't have to do it immediately.

Eh, loot is loot. Btw, can you give your WoG on whether or not handing the weapons off to the morr knights will result in all of them being buried/sealed away as grave goods? Like is it a certainty, or possibility.

It's a possibility. You don't know Morrites well enough to know if they'd respect the grave goods of pre-Imperial pagans with the blood of a Morrite priest on their undead claws.

[X] Pragmatic advice
-[X] PREDECESSOR LOYALTY: Their self-serving nature and incompetence only gave the Von Carsteins an opportunity.
--[X] "I don't think there's sufficient evidence that suggests the rot was so widespread as to include my predecessor. Him being compromised would make it likely the League was compromised, together with his entire intelligence structure, and they could have dealt much more damage than has been done, had he truly been aimed at total subversion. Let's prepare for the worst, but not jump to premature conclusions just yet."
-[X] PREDECESSOR APPROACH: The rot lives on; we must excise it.
--[X] "That being said, finding and eliminating him as a player is of tantamount importance to get to the bottom of this. He's still in a position where he could cause substantial damage if he wanted to."
-[X] STIRLANDIAN LEAGUE: Do not waste such a potent resource. Claim the League.
--[X] "Tentatively. The concept is incredibly useful, giving us a ready-made flow of information many rulers could only dream of, without lifting so much as a finger. Yet, this requires that we find our predecessor first and look if we can claim it in the first place, and maintain it without employing the same...popularity-decreasing tactics."

[x] Plan Slight Changes
-[X] Do your job:
--[x] The Wurtbad Watch already has their ear to the ground. Make their information flow to you.
--[x] Personally vet everyone that works in the castle, and replace everyone you're not sure of the loyalties of
---[x] ... and make sure some of the new hires and trustworthy ones report to you.
---[X] Ask the good Brother to assist you. Can't hurt to double check when it comes to HERESY.
-[X] Secret Base:
--[x] Diggy Diggy Hole, Outsourced: Pay someone to do the digging, then Mindhole them on their way out. (no action required, -personal gold)
--[x] Filled with Potential: You've got a room cleared out and ready to be put to use. It should make an excellent enchanter's workshop after a bit of furnishing and some purchases in Altdorf. (no action, -personal gold)
-[X] Research:
--[x] A large number of Shyish-stained weapons were uncovered from the Barrow. Perhaps you should:
---[x] Examine them yourself and see if they're useful, or dangerous, or both.
----[x] Bring an example or two to show your master while you are in Altdorf.
-----[X] Lead-lined steel case. Magic lock on top of mundane one. Carry on your person.
-[X] Go to Altdorf:
--[x] Van Hal is considering candidates for the post of Marshal, and he has asked you to vet them.
--[x] That damn Asp has still been quiet, but maybe it's just biding it's time. Finally admit it's existence to your contacts back in the College and see if they know anything that can help.
---[X] Ranald's Blessing
--[X] Who Needs Letters Home: You might be able to wring more information out of your Master, or you might just be able to get news, information and guidance in general from the Grey Order. Either way, a visit is in order.

Just one thing, we won't have a chance for another a Grey Wizard until we're a Magister. To do that, we need to seriously practise our magic (which we are failing to do again this turn).

I guess it *was* a very brief stay in our Journeyman Wizard second career before we got bundled into our third Spy career. At least that explains where our WS boosts are coming from.

Revelation of All Secrets
An Optimistic View Of How Things Might Have Gone

BoneyM said:
Your now-customary post-council meeting with Van Hal opens as per usual, with him barely looking up from his desk as you enter. It seems like every time you come in here, there's more papers stacked up.
(...)
"Letters every now and then. I'll have been getting in touch with them this year anyway because there's a killer illusion-snake trying to murder me."
Van Hal's mug was halfway to his lips when you said that, and he lowers it back down onto the desk and gives you a flat look. "What have you been getting up to," he asks - he doesn't quite growl, but there's a hint of it in his voice.
"Nothing recently," you assure him. "This is from back when I was still getting a hold on Ulgu."
"And it didn't occur to you to tell me there was a Thorned One pursuing you?"
"You know of it?" You ask, hopefully.
"Barely. I once pursued an artist-cult that worshipped it as their muse. In the end, I only got the snake's leftovers, and they would have been for the asylum if they had escaped the pyre." You sigh, disappointed, and he shakes his head at you. "A Thorned One. And you're only just sending letters home to ask for advice."
"I've been busy," you say defensively.
He's not taking that too badly, you think. But he would have liked to be notified earlier. You should probably tell him about the other things earlier rather than later, too.

"My lord." you say nervously, taking a deep breath to gather your thoughts.

"Weber?" Van Hal looks at you.

"I'm not sure how to put this. But- ah, in several of the books I've read, there's a question which indicates things are about to go wrong: 'When were you planning on telling me about this?' So there are some things I want to get off my chest before that happens."

"Is this about the fact that you worship Ranald?"

You blink. You were sure you'd been discreet about that. "How did you know?"

"Kasmir told me."

"How did he know?"

"He didn't tell me. Priest business of some sort, I suppose?" Van Hal shrugs. "As I've said, as long as you're loyal to Stirland and the Empire, it doesn't concern me that you worship Ranald. But you said 'things'. What else?"

"...it's more than just worship. I've bought a place in the city so I could work more discreetly outside the castle, and I turned it into a shrine to Ranald the Deceiver, and I've made friends with some of the thief-priests of Ranald the Night Prowler."

Van Hal makes the sign of the comet. "Sigmar preserve me from the plans of wizards. But I've worked with worse. You do intend to make these priests part of your spy network and have them warn you, and me, about attempted vampire infiltration of the city's underworld, right?" His tone makes it clear that this is actually an order despite being phrased as a question.

"Yes."

"Good. What else?"

"The posts listed as 'Magical Expenses' and 'Contacts Outside Stirland' in my budget report are padded with interest payments on my debt to the Grey College."

The Elector Count rolls his eyes. "Weber, the most relevant part of that sentence wasn't the embezzling, it was the word 'debt'. A spymaster in debt to someone else is a spymaster whose loyalties are uncertain." The silence is oppressive as he weighs his next words carefully, glaring at you sharply. "But you have a record of good service, even if it's short, and the Grey Order is a respectable institution, not some Tilean usurer. How much do you owe?" You tell him, and he grunts. "Mmm. I'll have to talk to Wilhelmina, but here's what I'm thinking: You'll stop embezzling, I'll lend you the money, you'll pay off the Grey Order, your debt is now to me. And Wilhelmina will be scrutinizing your future expenses."
(Relation -1)

You nod quickly, hoping that the word 'future' in that sentences means he's willing to overlook your past indiscretions.

"Is that all? Because I have a province to run." Van Hal looks sour and disgruntled, but not angry. Not quite yet. Time for the last card.

"Only one more thing. My former master in the Grey Order sent me a letter. He said that --- ------- --------- ------ --- --- -- -------- ----- -- - ------ ------ -----."

"Well, what did he say?"

"What? I just told you." You reach for Ulgu and try to explain again, listening to yourself speak. "- --- ----- -- ------- - ------ -- -----. Oh. I see. -- ------- ------- -- ----------- -- -- -- ------- -- ------- ----- ------ - ----------." The Count is tapping his fingers impatiently, so you try a new tack. "Hypothetically speaking, a wizard might be able to use Ulgu to magically hide certain information a person knows so that it cannot be passed on. Hypothetically speaking, if I'd had a spell of secrecy put on me this way, there might be certain things I'd be unable to tell you and I'd have to talk around. Hypothetically speaking, such a spell could be dispelled by a similarly powerful wizard. Hypothetically speaking, - ----- -- --------- ---- ---."

"Bloody wizards." Now Van Hal does look angry. "Has your former master asked, told, instructed, or otherwise suggested you do anything contrary to the interests of Stirland and the Empire?"
(Relation -1)

"No." At least you can say that much.

"Then I'm going to conclude this is bloody stupid wizard business and leave it to the bloody stupid wizards to keep their bloody stupid wizard secrets. Get out. Get out, do your job, and see if you can find a way to dispel whatever happened to you. Hypothetically." He spits the last word. You have a feeling he's going to be watching you a lot more closely from now on.

(Entirely speculative post.)

Man, some of these reasonings sound like they should be put together, or at least have some mention made of IC in the next update.

I dunno about husbando-ing Van Hal, but I bet the Van Hal are waifuing Weber as hard as they can

Except for those deviants working the childhood friend angle for the Steward lady
I thought steward lady was a mother figure rather than childhood friend
So theoretically we could just consistently take 7 actions, and slap Ranald's blessing on the 7th so we probably never trigger a crit.
We still roll a completely separate roll for injury/exhaustion/burnout. and that one does not benefit from the renald bonus
Faith: 12-15 - Says all the right words about Sigmar.

...we have higher piety than him?!
Renald find it amusing that we would be better casting magic as a priest than as a wizard.
Our piety is utterly ridiculous

One of the things we should look into getting is a copy of each of the in universe Gotrek and Felix books as possible, because despite how crazy they are and how many believe them to be purely a work of fiction they are actually true.

That's true. In CK2, a Spymaster that can be convinced to work against you is a death sentence. Sometimes you don't have anyone you can trust apart from your wife.

-[x] PREDECESSOR LOYALTY: I think that even if they were merely self serving and incompetent, it is not something we can risk betting on. A well entrenched spymaster could do a lot of damage if he really works with vampires. I think the risk of letting him go is too high.

-[X] STIRLANDIAN LEAGUE: Do not clasp the snake to your bosom. Destroy the League.
--[x] Stirland economy is in poor shape, and the league carries much of the blame. It completely cripples trade that it isn't doing, which in turn lets it prey on local businesses and cripple their growth as well, and its tax exemptions make things even worse. While it is a bit of a shame to lose out on such an impressive intelligence engine. We can still do our job without crippling the economy.
