[X] Plan The Front Don't Need Us Yet[X] Jack Albright, career criminal.
[X] Have a scribe transfer them into book form - one copy for you, one for the Imperial College, one for Asarnil.
[X] Hire some printing press time and a translator, and start selling Reikspiel versions to anyone who's interested.
[X] Hire some printing press time and find a merchant willing to ship and sell as many copies as they can to Ulthuan.

[X] Plan Get Stuck In

Mage Sight.

The perspective of a Grey Wizard is different to that of a Which Hunter, Priest or Knight. Whatever Van has been doing hasn't worked. Perhaps a different approach, however less experienced, will have better results.

More importantly I want experience of combat, not of leading armies. We are going to have more things try to revoke our vitals via gross structural rearrangement. We are most likely not going to be organising large scale military campaigns.
We seem to be integrating the Sewer Jacks into the watch and intend to teach them dwarven tunnel fighting techniques (and though we don't know it yet) to fight an underground campaign against the Skaven.

We should almost always be able to find something to fight. Being able to learn strategy in a war... not so much.

[X] Bound Spells: Though the corrosive Dhar made them high-maintenance, the design of the bound spells in the castle's infiltrators has fascinating possibilities. The memories had faded but you've managed to refresh them. Try to adapt it for use with Ulgu.
-[X] Ranald's Favor
[X] As a Journeywoman, the path to Magister is marked by mastering more than the two shadow spells you already know. Send to the Grey Order for the basics and work on figuring out one of the others.

Out of curiosity - does Randal Blessing gives +10 instead of +20 in Purge turns? It was +10 in last turn.

Asarnil's relationship score is a three-point scale: Annoying human, unremarkable human, tolerable human. You're in the last of those categories. He likes you, but in the same way you'd like an animal that learned a clever trick. Full ten-point scales are for his equals.
Asarnil racial superiority complex must be of breathtaking size if he managed to keep it through whole 173 years of exile. Feeling superior is one thing - he earned it as he is better than almost anyone. But to consider all non-elves as nothing more than animals that can be taugh tricks, and keep it up for over century and half... damn. It must be a very, very lonely way to live.

Tbh he's probably better about it than other high elves

He's not totally alone. I'm sure Deathfang is better company than 98% of imperials anyways.

Correct.

Voting closed, writing has begun. With 'selling in Reikspiel' having ~90% of the votes of the winning option and 'shipping copies to Ulthuan' having >80%, I'm going to bundle 'personal copies/selling copies in the Empire/selling copies in Ulthuan' up. And next time I'll make it plan voting.

In the HQ tent specifically. There's no option for 'wait around to hear about any possible fight you could throw yourself into and then do so' because that would be stupid.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to try to puncture the perception that as the protagonist, you are the only one that can ever achieve anything. Yes, there's unusual goings on with the campaign that is causing progress to slow. What, apart from being the protagonist, makes you think you're more qualified to address this than Van Hal? He's been doing this for longer than Mathilde's been alive. He's got priests of every Cult of the Empire assisting him. He's got the Knights of Morr. He's got Asarnil. He's got thirty thousand men. Yes, Burning Shadows is a neat trick, but you know what else is a neat trick? Thirty cannonballs.

The only legitimate reason to attach yourself to this campaign so you can get experience. Your contribution to the overall campaign would be, at best, utterly negligible.
I admit, when I wrote up that plan I'd expected our contribution to be, you know, non-zero.

I suppose I got a false positive from Mathilde telling Van Hal that she could write to the College and maybe bring in a few wizards, like this was a big deal.

thats for the attack on drakenhof itself, which we are nowhere near. which was specifically stated.
Not for the initial stages of the campaign -the Purge is going to be long, slow, and methodical, which in my experience is poorly suited to most battle wizards. When it's time to march on the castle itself, then..."

For 'business as usual' of purging the hills, her effect of a few extra kills and a few less casualties will have next to zero effect on the scale of an entire army. Killing, say, fifty enemies would be amazing for her personally, but when thirty thousand men are mustered, fifty is a rounding error.

It's in massive setpiece battles that wizards in general and Mathilde in particular could really shine.

So we use these skirmishes to get swole, and the big battles to earn honours?

-[*] Attach yourself to a specific regiment so you can spend some time in the thick of things.

...I could have sworn this said 'specify which'. Though it might be better to have it be an informed decision. Okay, minivote time.

Empire tactics 101: spears receive the charge, swords countercharge. Each Division has two spear regiments, one sword regiment, and one crossbow regiment. The Regiment you choose will determine what sort of action, if any, you find yourself in. You can also attempt to join one of the other presences on the battlefield.

- Herr Schultz with the 2nd Division will be pushing up the Hilltop Road about halfway to Vanhaldenschlosse. Once there, they will find a hilltop close to the road and fortify it, to be used as a fallback position and supply depot. They will also be scouting the nearby area as well as standing ready to support the 3rd or 4th if needed.
- Gustav with the 3rd Division will be circling around the outside of the Hills to approach one of the tallest peaks in the range, home to many a local legend, most of which are worrying light on details but something called a 'Blasphemy of Blood' keeps coming up. Gustav is confident that whatever it is, it will prove vulnerable to at least one of steel, cannonballs, or dragonfire.
- Van Hal with the 4th Division will be scouring the hills between the two upper forks of the river, northwest of Naubonum. This is expected to be business as usual, though Van Hal will be intending to examine the problem of why any patch of given land needs to be scoured several times to be free of undead.

From the preliminary results of processing all the reports and paperwork coming in, most of what has been faced has been the restless dead - zombies, skeletons, and the occasional wight. Ghouls have been spotted, but not in any great number and most have been seen scampering away at high speed, and they've only been rode down when knights or pistoliers were close at hand.

If we were a war wizard and the martial adviser, then sure. But we are a Spymaster.

I still maintain that trying to become a stronger chess piece is the wrong thing to do here. It isn't core. We are not handled, we are the one who handles, right? We should be a chess player. Learning how to put an army of 30,000 in the right place with the right intellignce can do more than we ever could at a random front line.

Edit: As we're doing this, let's lend our Witch Sight to Van Hal in figuring out why undead keep rising.
4th Divison.

The vampires probably think that the only thing That can harm them is the elf with the dragon. They're arrogant like that. They'll probably try to assasinate him, or get rid of him in some other way besides a straight up fight. We should hang out with him, bond some more, and maybe convince him to keep an eye out for poison or other trickery. Just in case.

It means you can try but it would almost certainly just turn into you riding as fast as you can in the direction he flew off and arriving just in time to see a bunch of burned bodies.

No, he will not let you ride his dragon.

I'm thinking one of these two.

Their both investigating mysterious stuff and a wizards perspective might prove useful.

[X] 1st Pistolier Cohort

The 2nd Division is doing some scouting, and stands ready to support the other two. I figure this can still give us some practice with pistols and Burning Shadows if/when we end up in combat.

Hm. The 3rd or 4th sound like they're doing more interesting things; the 4th has the possibility of research with Van Hal while the 3rd might set us against some kind of nasty gribbly alongside Gustav and Asarnil, so either could be good.

As the 3rd is utterly lacking in cavalry, I am curious as to where Gustav is planning to locate himself within their ranks.

If we go with the 4th, it might be worth trying to get to know some Knights of Morr... though that has certain fairly obvious difficulties involved. Probably not feasible. Maybe we'd be better off going with the sword regiments regardless.

I suppose sword or crossbow regiment would be the way to do things.

I want to hang with Schultz, make sure he doesn't lose any more ears, but Gustav or Van Hal's tasks may be better suited to us.
