Karak Varn expeditions are a regular occurrence from Zhufbar, which is right next door, and they're more like heavily armoured mining teams than anything equivalent to King Belegar's Expedition.

The Karak Dum expedition is set to begin around 2485, and will be setting off from Karak Kadrin.

You could, but it will be interpreted as an admission that you've lost control of the situation and they'll err on the side of scorched earth.

maybe we can help that expedition

Stewardship and marriage fly over on weekends, I'm interested in stewardship not only because it could be fun but also because it seems like the position with the least capable rivals. Trade is incredibly important for the wealth of the hold and the fact that we would be the canadite with a direct trade focus means that we would be the only one fully leveraging our location.

As for marriage, I'd kind of like kids and I do like Anton. It won't be perfect but what is

I don't know if you've gotten to my post about why I agree that this isn't insider trading, but I do feel like I've not been able to express why I think what we've done is equivalent to insider trading and why the spirit of what we've done is the reason why insider trading is illegal.

Insider trading isn't illegal because of the use of confidential information for profit, it illegal because insider trading undermines society's trust in a fair securities exchange where everyone plays by the same rules. The breach of that trust and playing by different rules is why insider trading is illegal.

And I believe that Mathilde, and the EIC in general, are playing by different rules when they are able to communicate valuable material information quicker than literally anyone else in the Empire. And that's where I'm seeing the connection between what Mathilde did and what makes Insider trading illegal.
I see your point and I agree that Mathilde has definitely done something that would reduce people's trust if word spread (and if people understood well enough).
Still, I'd like to argue the counterpoint for a bit.

"A fair securities exchange where everyone plays by the same rules" is a good principle, but one should be judicious about which field these same rules are being applied to. To take an extreme example, sometimes a company is outcompeted or obsoleted, and loses all its value. But we don't call this a "different rule" for the losing company, even if it results in very different things happening to the losing company and the non-losing companies.

Mathilde has not spilled anyone's secrets, nor broken any oaths. This is not strictly a legalist point - I don't think she's done anything here that she even 'should' have sworn an oath not to do. Her main advantage, fundamentally, is technological: having a gyrocopter at hand.

Technological advantage is one of those playing fields where it's excusable to have a rule that the technologically superior party gains an economic benefit, because this encourages further investment in technological advancement. Or to put it more concretely: buy moar gyrocopters. (Or rent, if the dwarfs are stubborn.) And then reap the wider secondary benefits of more investments in gyrocopters.

The man held back knwolege of his skills which might have cost dwarf and human lives since military plans by the expedition leadership were not made with full knwoelge of his abilities. That is reason enough to kick him out in my book, especially given how dangerous his research matter is.
That's ridiculous. If a man offers to do five jobs for you, you thank him, you don't yell at him because he didn't offer to do a sixth job that he's also qualified for.

You could, but it will be interpreted as an admission that you've lost control of the situation and they'll err on the side of scorched earth.
Oh dear.
Oh dear.
When did we last even have control of that situation?
How much control do we have now, for that matter?

[X] Marry me...
- [X] Soon.

With our 36 % and his 16 % of the EIC that gives us the controlling share in the company at 52%.

[X] Steward

"Now presenting The Steward of King Belegar, Lord of Karak Eight Peaks Dame Mathilde Weber-Kiesinger, Gray Magister, Baroness Blutdorf, The Scourage of Sylviana."

Clueless party goer. "Don't mages take a vow of poverty?"

Informed party goer. "Shhhhhh. It's 'Her husband's money' wink wink nudge nudge. if you know what I mean."

"And the noble title?"

"Which one?"

"What?... What do you mean which one?"

"Well there are HER lands. and then there are her husband's lands. She's a Dame after that thing in Sylviana. Then she became a Baroness when she married... And the controlling share holder in one of the largest companies in the Empire...which she uses along with her trade connections with the dwarfs to make even more profit... For her husband... of course." Looks around suspiciously.

"What are you looking around for?"

"Gray Magisters, sneaky bastards... They're listening to everything we say and reporting back to her." Places a finger beside his nose and winks.

"That's just a myth."

Matilda appearing next to them. "Yeah that's just a myth."

and the only thing it's missing to fulfil the model is a large, professional military.
And now I wonder whether it's possible for that to change. On the other hand, jurisdiction friction between the Undumi and an EIC military force that guards its investments in Karak Eight Peaks would likely lead to problems, both short-term and long term. Not to mention we really don't need the EIC becoming more powerful than it is already.

Also uh, vote tally because I'm curious how things stand now.

This sounds like QM code for
"You need to decide, from the information I've given you, whether the EIC has already gone too far, or whether it is likely to, and whether you should take any action." :V
We are the majority shareholder. Legally speaking, seems like we'd take the majority responsibility, too...

Honestly one of the biggest reasons I'm voting for steward is the visceral reaction the thread had towards bad stewardship that we just saw. ;)

[X] Steward
[X] Stay single. Marry for love.

And I strongly believe in marrying for love. I'm not interested in romance as a means to an end, it should be an end in and of itself.

Also
- trade is far and away the most valuable thing about K8P, let's keep the focus here.
- @Mr Apollo 's points about warrior of fog
- status in empire when we go back. (Leader of the K8P humans > court wizard, in my opinion)
- money sink: we can spend a lot on things that are good for our settlement, getting it out of our hands (vow of poverty) but in our control
- there are better options for other council positions. Yes, even court wizard; a runepriest is pretty solid, and collaboration is way more likely if they come to us for help on that stuff
- better positioned to start a branch college if we have authority over zoning
- keeping death pass clear gives us clear martial responsibilities in addition to city building.

I like city building, ok?

  • Having a wizard lab/tower optimized for magical research/other specialized effects built
A survey done and turned into instructions to give the builders to either emphasize a specific wind or a lack of any wind, 5 points.

Well, that's needed prior to hiring dwarven masons. Ideally buy it twice, and use the second to get a report on the way the winds interact with K8P as a whole: also serves as magical reconnaissance if there are anomalies.

Yeah, reading all of this, I am definitely leaning between Steward and Wizard, so like the indecisive creature I am, I'll vote for both and see what happens.

[X] Marry them...
- [X] Reinhild Gerber
[X] Steward
[X] Court Wizard

Let's get our best little bro a science waifu, that tends to work out doesn't it?

Anyway, College Favor-wise, I imagine we're probably going to have to spend some on manpower--a few more Journeymanlings wouldn't be amiss, hopefully from the colleges that we don't have represented in our little crew so far--Human Magic rewards specialization after all.

And as has been established, getting on the front lines with Magister Weber is--apparently--a cheat code to get the credits you need to graduate to full Magister--it shouldn't be as expensive as it should be for some to join the campaign--especially since we've shown ourselves willing to credit our underlings, and there's a shitton of things to write reports on here. A three month campaign spat out two top tier, Revolutionary papers and one very solid extension of an existant field of interest.

Pretty much. If you weren't ready to play for keeps, you should have stayed a Journeyman. Now you're a Magister and it's exactly your job to make these calls.

I expect we'll see things trend that way when the trade to Ind and Cathay begins through the Karak, as that was also the type of scenario that pushed the EITC in that direction and also was the reason for it being founded in the first place. Though in that case, it was to ameliorate the risk of ship voyages.

Edit: in this case, I'm talking about the start of the Dutch version, but the underlying mechanics are similar for either. If we can swing a monopoly status for human trade (maybe even dwarf, though I don't think Belegar would let that slide) on the trade route through the Karak we're really in the business

But Court Wizard has a major lead right now. So if we want maximum indecisiveness as per Divided Loyalties tradition, we need to vote up Steward until it's neck and neck with Wizard, then spend the rest of the voting period seesawing back and forth between the two. :V

Well, I think it was mentioned that the EIC would be more likely to sell and buy from other expeditions who make the trip, rather than make said trips themselves.

Hmm, I'm not sure if the EIC needs to be reigned in yet. They haven't done anything illegal or harmful to the Empire. The harmful to the Empire part seems to be all Roswita's doing and really, it's mostly just been bad for her. The rest of the Empire has probably benefited. The EIC is also still functioning well within the laws without any tax evasion or criminal element. If things seem to get out of hand, the Empire should create news laws and limitations to counter it. Just sending murder wizards after them doesn't seem like it would align with the Empires current laws.

Now, if the EIC could also be set up to start bringing in wealth from outside the Empire, exploiting other places, we'd mitigate the risk of people getting annoyed enough to start drafting those laws.

Anyway, I would say the EIC has... Not crossed any lines yet, but is getting precariously close to some and has a critical point of failure in the sense that if Wilhemina dies the whole thing is going to go up in smoke because few other chair-holders would have her integrity.

She is... Reasonably honest, her heirs are not.
