"They took the leylines of the Elves and turned it into their own vortex," Niedzwenka says with a snort. "Around and around, Erengrad to Kislev City to Praag to Castle Alexandronov and back to Erengrad again, spinning it from Winds to Ice for the Widow's Witches to use against Kislev's enemies. Didn't the Elves howl and screech when they finally returned to Norvard and found their precious stones serving human masters!"
Niedzwenka is certainly something. And to think we were worried about Hatalath and Thorek getting into a fight.

Ppppth... Welp. We can't accede.
I'm frankly partial to call a conclave between The Colleges and The Emperor in order to call a dispensation for this.

Interesting update. Lots of lore, some fun character interactions, and a good demonstration of some of the hurdles we'll need to face to get this off the ground.

@Boney, what potential complications does Mathilde anticipate from going via Dragoma vs going via the Emperor? What does 'unwanted attention' mean in this context?

wow, every one take their puzzle piece and put them together to reveal that the entire continent may or may not explode

If you go to the Emperor, only the Emperor needs to know. If you go to Dragomas, then you go via Algard, and Alric, Paranoth, and Feldmann would need to be looped in (or at least sent a memo, since at least two of them are out and about right now) because their Wizards would be involved.

So...

The imperial heir turns out to be a wizard, then the wizard godmother of the kid starts asking for dispensation to mess around with Dhar? It seems to me that the broader implications should be considered carefully before going straight for the emperor, because if it leaks (which it probably will at some point), it could have some very unfortunate consequences for Heidi and her kid given that we'd be using her to bypass the usual channels.

Yeah, okay, that is a problem.

You know with the Dhur involved in the project we could probably use some of the knowledge we gained from the Liber Mortis to fill in some gaps that we are missing.

Something to keep in mind. Mathilde knows a lot about dhar due to the true diary of a rat catcher the liber mortis. If this project goes ahead she's uniquely in position to contribute to that part, but QUESTIONS (TM) will be raised by her experience.
At this point mentioning that she's read the book MAY not result in a significant haircut or celebratory bonfire, but it won't look good. Counter-vampire may excuse some of it depending on how much knowledge comes from her instead of the elves though.

Day One of the Waystone Project
Glorious. I'm going to want some time to digest and pick apart all of that.

For the vote I would vastly prefer to go through the effort of asking permission we are certain to receive, rather than risk having to beg for forgiveness that would almost certainly not be granted.

I think we could go straight to the Emperor, Dragomas would get it. More people means more possible leaks to the high elves.

I'm not really worried about unwanted attention here. Our patriarch and Dragomas don't seem like an issue, and the worst the others could do is withdraw their wizards or day something to other people, which doesn't seem disastrous to me.

Definitely hoping we can get an action at some point to have Mathilde and Johann map out the major nodes of the Empire.

Be good to confirm if it's Helmgart that's sending it over the Grey Mountains, for example.

...ah. Algard and Paranoth already know about the project and are unlikely to raise a fuss, Feldmann probably wouldn't be a problem (he's pragmatic, if a touch slimy- worst case we have to bribe him), but Alric? If he doesn't take this as an opportunity to regain power I've horribly misread the guy.

Loved the update. It felt both like a discussion of magical metaphysics AND like an initial project meeting where you're trying to get a bunch of semi-competing managers on board with a compromise :D

I'm a bit surprised that the "pack up the Waystone project" option is even offered. Not because Mathilde would refuse to give up on a truly impossible project, but because Mathilde simply following the Articles when they're inconvenient/ambiguous is uncharacteristic.
Or is this a vote to see where her limits are? I don't perceive this as any "worse" than previous Article-respecting votes, but I guess it is potentially more public...

[ ] Conspiracy
When there's no Witch Hunters around, anything's legal. Attempt to enter into an understanding with your fellow Wizards that what happens in Laurelorn, stays in Laurelorn.

Egrimm approved option :p

[ ] College Dispensation
Seek dispensation from Article 7 through proper channels from the Supreme Patriarch for the study of the Waystones.

Seems risky. We don't want that many eyes on us.

[ ] Imperial Dispensation
Seek dispensation from Article 7 directly from the Emperor for the study of the Waystones.

I think this is the way to go. We'll get it, and there will be no fools asking inconvenient questions.

[ ] Ignorance
The other Wizards don't need to know. Let them know that you'll take care of the study of the Waystone foundations, and they should restrict their attention to the rest of the mechanisms.

There is no way this could ever backfire, trust me!

So this is the full team for the start of the project

Is Sarcvoi a male or female name?
You say that like those are the only options.

I mean it is known that Waystones do drain away Dhar which means study of waystones touching dhar someway should not be surprise. And asking for dispension in order to better combat it is perfectly normal. I mean our justification is even stronger than Skaven loot.

[ ] Imperial Dispensation
Seek dispensation from Article 7 directly from the Emperor for the study of the Waystones.

I am thinking this.

well, with the second secret, we may or may not be able to turn the entire network into a very big bomb i guess

good lord it is scary how we can just bomb the entire continent

Before I read the rest of the chapter I wanted to point out how pleased Mathilde must have been with
"The cunning beings in silver ships," you observe.

Hatalath's smile fades and he gives you a long, thoughtful look. "Yes. Them."
---
Then I read the rest of the chapter. Divided loyalties indeed.

I'm very open to arguments on this matter, but I'm inclined to not trying to keep a secret from our fellow researchers, so either via Dragomas or the Empress.

I'm leaning Empress, as I think that having a non-wizard give permission, and have that seconded by the chief-wizard would look better if ever investigated.

Ideally, I'd like to get her support and have Dragomas 'read in' so as, or "both", but that's not on the list.
---
The idea of getting a bunch of strangers to keep a secret, i.e. Conspiracy is an unforgivably dumb idea IRL, and in WHF reads as plotter-bait. No thanks.

I wonder if a Great Deed will help convince the Emperor of the worthiness of this project.

Also, this is the first update since the job vote where I'm really feeling the Waystone Project. Probably because this is its real beginning.
