So I've been thinking - on how we can jumpstart our economy. And when I think of an undeveloped country transforming into an economic superpower, reclaiming its former global predominance, the extraordinary example of China's post-Deng Xiaoping economic development comes to mind.

Of course, it would be wrong to assume that we can just lift China's model wholesale to our own circumstances and expect everything to work out. The circumstances are different. Our government is different. Our populace is different. Our geography is different. Our infrastructure and education are different. Our diplomatic relations are different.

But I can see a similarity between us in that we can potentially capitalise on growing beneath the opposing superpower's notice.

As a beginner economic student, I'm hardly qualified to talk in confidence about this topic. Especially involving a history and culture I'm not very familiar with. But I know we have some very smart, insightful and well-sourced people on this thread and the wider website.

So do any of you think there are lessons from the incredible economic growth of China that we can apply to our own situation? Or mistakes they made that we can avoid? Or differences between the People's Republic and Commonwealth that means we need to do these things differently? Are there other examples that we should study or build our policy on?

I'll come back when I've done more research on the topic myself. Although to kick things off Deng's Four Modernisations, Agriculture, Industry, Defense, and Science and Technology, seem like good priorities for us to start with.

There is no world trade Nexus for us to hook up and grow into.

Then how do we re-develop global trade (and demand)? I'm guessing we need to try to develop our relationship with Europe and Cali (and through Cali the Pacific).
The big problem is that our location makes us unattractive as a trading center. It will take major infrastructure repairs for there to be any easy way or us to trade with anyone beyond our immediate neighbors, and even then we won't really be in a good position to outcompete foreign suppliers on the broader world ocean.

In real life the Chicago area is a trade and transport hub because it's a crossroads for internal American commerce, and that's something we're going to struggle to restart.

The possible way to get foreign trade flowing instead of just potential aid from interested parties looking to stab Russian interests in the gut in North America, would be to secure the Mississippi river all the way to the sea to open up a secure route for trade. This will be a medium term goal as we currently don't have nearly the amount of assets needed to attempt that.

Plus, there's bound to be a successor state popping up at the mouth of the Mississippi as the threat of Victoria dropping by has gone up in smoke.

There has to be some global trade network, because some critical materials (i.e. rare earth metals) are just not common enough for local markets to sustain civilizations with advanced technology. I don't know whether there's a robust international trade in other goods and services, but I'd bet that trade at least exists; comparative advantage will always be a factor. You can't grow bananas in Siberia, to pick a fairly extreme example.

If nothing else, we have lots of cheap labor and plenty of raw materials. There might not be all that much demand for that, but it's something. Unfortunately, most industries associated with those require the bulk movement of goods, which is something you really want a port for. The ideal port would be New Orleans, but we're in the kind of situation where we'll have to take what we can get.

Thats... The big question. Africa had cities that echo edour situation. They used to be colonial or precolonial trade cente, but changes in time means they left out of the current world trade nexus. This even as many of them remain active in intraafrican trade by catering to the trucking route. It took now, for new light industry, China investment for raw resources and opening up transportation thats opening up landlocked subsaharan africa to open world trade.

We need the econ AP in infrasteucture at least? Also minus the malus from hostile neighborhood and etc ,... Theres a lot og barriers right now.

I not saying theres no world trade. Im saying we cant hook into it.

What is sub-Saharan Africa?

It is not just a question of physical geography

We this right now. However, with the defeat of Victoria, the first step to global trade and economy is now open.

One of the key lessons of China vs other communist powers like Poland was that Hong Kong allowed China to hook into world trade, justifying the economic investment in Shenzhen and the Pearl Delta. This then allowed other cities like Shanghai and Guangzhou to hook up and propell more chinese to prosperity.

We also cannot ignore the Russian railways, because those Railway access was northern China first foray into public capitalism, as traders got goods to sell into Russia and buy stuff like Jeans back into China. It quickly eclipsed by the Hongkong, Pearl, Shenzhen/Shanghai axis but this shows just how important evrnn minor trading links was.

So answer is to invest in infrastructure and prioritizing annexations/assimilations which give us better access to international trade?

If Chicago is America's internal trading and transport hub then is suppose we need to get rid of Hostile Neighbourhood ASAP. I wonder if we, as a result, will have an easier time trading with former Canada as well as the former US?

I wonder if the markets further South in the Americas could be a good investment in the mid-term?

Canon Omake: There Was Hope
There Was A Hope: An American Animator's Tale.

Your Name was Harry Maxwell Mason, And you are an Animator with an Idea, One that would hopefully get the attention of that Global Market and hopefully get the massive amounts of money for you to get your company on the Map.

You are 29 years old and were once a Seattle native, surviving the war and Japanise occupation you threw yourself into animation and art as a coping mechanism, having worked in animation for your entire adult life, from Studio Triggers High Octane action to the Heart of Kyo-Animations many slices of Life animations.

It was good money working for them as little as it was, but you moved to California for a fresh start, with a notebook of ideas and sketches, you opened your own studio in a Loft in LA with what little money you had left from the move.

The Studio was mostly kept afloat with money from commercials, Art commissions from the internet, and the occasional odd jobs that go to the rent. You didn't mind being a dishwasher, but art supplies was expensive.

You worked with about 6 other men, Aron Blake and his brother Louis (Character Artists and Cool weapons artist respectively) , Alex Hiesenberg (Man can draw men fighting in anything Mechs, Guns, Knives...you name it he can make it dance),Joseph Conrad (Landscape and environmental painter, only one with a degree in art.), Frank Carter (He can draw injuries...brutal and horrifying ways to die and suffer) and Jacob Wright (Secondary Character designer and background continuity expert). All of them were your friends you dragged along south to join you in this venture...and they were talented, but lacked a unifying idea, wasn't much to inspire people these days.

The Money and supplies were coming in and being used on occasion but all of your talent was going to waste.

"I should have become a Mangaka..make something good with the ideas in my head. So...wanna see the news?" You said looking at a note you wrote on a sticky note.

"Yeah turn it on, god work is drying up." Frank said trying to get the remote off the coffee table, but you nabbed it.

The Newsroom was abuzz with conversation...images of war and battle that was going on further east.

"Too carry on our breaking news story, the Military of the Commonwealth has confirmed that the battle was indeed a Victory, the Victorian Army has been defeated in the Field."
The news hit like a bolt of Lightning. "Holy Shit!!" Frank said as he spilled his tea on the table.

You jumped half out of your skin at that. "Hot Damn...hell is freezing over, the Viks finally ran out of luck and died in droves...look at those numbers!!"

The Casualty Numbers were high, far Higher than you ever imagined possible for them. It was a sign from god and it gave you ideas as the fire of your creativity came to life. "Guy's...clean up the mess, check your schedule for the next two weeks I have an idea...and uhh, is it my turn to pick out the Anime tonight Gundum 8th MS Team OVA, you know why."

They cleaned up and checked their schedules. "So...what is the idea?" Joseph asked picking up a Rag for the spill.

"Oh something beautiful...we need character designs, the best you have I'll get you the outline of the plot to you guys to make it in three days. Alright, the first story takes place in the many moons of Jupiter and Saturn…in a changed solar system."

Alex then asked, "So wait how are we doing this?"

You respond. "The Only way, Traditional animation.Mostly because someone didn't pay for Wifi."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Story outline:

It is the Desolation Year 176 (2209 AD), Humanity has entered the stars battered and bruised over the course of two centuries of Strife, their home forcibly ejecting them after centuries of abuse and forced recovery. The Factions that were born from this great Migration are many and as divided as the nations of the world they left behind.

Factions (These are the inhabitants of the world born.)

The Jovian Alliance: Formed from the Exiles of the American Midwest and California on the 79 Moons of Jupiter, and the Hundreds of O'neill Cylinders that dot the gravity well of the Gas Giant forming an alliance of a somewhat democratic republic in the middle of the many hostile factions of the new Solar system. They are the youngest Faction at only 45 years of age, with a capital on a terraformed Ganymede.

Notes: A mixture of the Old United States, The California Republic, with the Military awesomeness of the Commonwealth and Poland. The ones with the Most episodes devoted to them. May or may not be preaching American exceptionalism, tolerance and grey and grey morality, and anti heroes.

Yeah...they are the Good guys, sorta.

The Grand Earth Dominion: A (Nominally Japanise and Russian inspired) Empire that grew out of the ashes of the Desolation, the ones who rule earth, have most of the industrial output, but none of the resources to actually build it, nominally the most advanced faction but one filled with one goal, unite the Solar System under their boot and rule with the tools to do so. They are also the Oldest faction, having risen out of the Old Earth Governments after the Desolation.

Notes: A scathing attack on the Russian and Japanise imperialism but they run on the Rule of Cool and likable antagonists with deep and compelling motives, products of a system they have no control over.

The Antagonists have to be worthy of beating the censors after all.

The Free Titan Movement: Partisans, religious Rebels and Anti-Dominan political factions that are in a war of attrition for their independence against the Dominion, They are stalemated, filled with infighting and are held together by hatred against the Spacers. They are 50 years old and have spent all that time on a war footing.

Note: Representing the World destroyed by the Collapse trying to get back on its feet, a war torn world filled with resources and a fresh start, if the universe stops trying to invade them. Currently in a Proxy war between the Jovians and the Dominion.

The Venus Conclave: At 100 years of age and with a stable economy and industry Venus is the Jewel of culture, finesse, bankers and the Third Largest Military in the setting. The Venusians use their economic power to finance and resist the Dominion despite being at peace with them. Known for spies that cannot be traced, and the mines of Mercury at their disposal, they stand well poised to help in the many proxy wars across Sol.

Notes: The Better qualities of the EU in recent years.

The Belter Post: Interstellar mailmen, with lots of guns, you have a package you want to deliver undetected, call them.

Notes: The US postal service was the last institution to fall apart in the fall of America (Save its holdout in New York City), having outlived its nation until 2035. We honor the men of the Post with this faction.

Characters:

Jovian Alliance:

Petty Officer 2nd Class Shiro Rokubungi: A 25 year old Mech Pilot, he is the Main viewpoint character of the JA, an often Sullen and distant individual, he is a Aisian man from Io, as such he considers most of the people around him to be rather frail, as such he often uses his mass production combat Mech as a shield for his comrades, his weapons often fail and he is adept at using the close range weapons at their disposal. Due to his harsh upbringing, he is a pessimistic person with little hope in the cause of his nation and life's purpose.

His arc is learning to open up to people and learn to have hope in the world around him.

Lieutenant Sayla Ford: Shiro's boss, back up pilot and all around decent commander. His love interest despite the fact that both of them hate each other at the beginning. Is actually the better pilot of the two at first. At 25 as well, she is a career officer, and dedicated to her troops safety.

General Rodrik Tine: The Direct superior to everyone, a man who has to lead this proxy war and get his men home alive.

The 19th Ranger company Squad 3 (Hope Sutherland, Franco Goldstine, Jeff Briggs and Slade White)

Hope: Medic and Sniper of the unit, has a rifle that can blow up tanks with the right ammo.

Franco: Team Machine Gunner and Comic relief.

Jeff: Shotgunner, uses Dragon breath Ammo.

Slade White:????

Grand Dominion:

Viktor Alexi:The commander of the Red Storms, ace of Titan and POV for the GD's.

Free Titan:

Aron Rorke: A supposed Freedom Fighter with some experimental gear,

Venus Conclave:

Agent Thomas Rogers:Master spy, viewpoint for the V's

The Post:

Fabian Dark: The Most OP MailMan in Sol, POV in episodes 9,12,and 15. A reminder why you don't fuck with the Mailmen.

"I get it it needs some ironing out...but I think we got something tangible." You said looking at the notes.

"Anime made by americans...this is never going to work." The all groaned.

You smiled "Its going to work, because its going to have everything, good writing, good animation, everything we need is there, we just need to get it ready and get some VA's to review."

And so you went to work, getting pen to paper and making a little bit of the American dream come back to life.

AN: SO I wondered what the effect on pop culture we just had, the amount of influence that Victoria losing just did,I assume it inspired a lot of people to create and have some hope in this world again.

Rereading it and how the news spread, damn right someone is getting inspired.

Also the thing is a draft of sorts for a show.

Enjoy!!

Me thinks the easiest way is also the hardest. We know damn well that Victoria ran trade out of Buffalo and the Free New York City.

The book also made New York state the site of various industry for Victoria, such as her infamous steam engines .

Gentlemen. I say its time to help New York escape fasicsm. I say we get Solid Snake IN:)

No, this is NOT a serious idea. But arguably, the free port of New York must be doing for Victoria what it can and shouls do for us.

Sure, I just figured that defeating Victoria and thus annex/maintaining a sphere of influence/liberating land in the straightest line to the nearest ocean was always going to be our top priority so I thought we might as well talk about any other strategies that could be implemented.

My post is NOT a workable strategy. Thats a HUGE FUCKING sandwich for us to eat right now.

Not to mention any Russian interventions....

Its just that...... We already know from the Rules that New York is trading with the world. Thats our hong kong. We already have mercentile spirit, aka, a trading nrtwork. Detroit has raw resources trading network too. Combine all 3 and NY industry and we can begin an economic uplift easily.

its hanging there like a golden apple, tantalizing out of reach....

Good, Because I'm going to make the American Anime and Animation community weep in Joy, because it is coming back and here to stay.

Plus...I enjoy the Disney esque plot of a bunch of artists building a franchise based on Pro american Ideals and a psedo rebellion against the Russian and Japanise cultural giants.

That or I just made a bunch of guys rip off multiple anime and give an american spin.

There is even an In universe reason for the notes sucking.

Next...on the list...anyone want to give me some Ideas before I come back to it.

An anime made in Imperial Japan about a brave young samurai traveling the strange and dangerous lands of the Youkai (which is very obviously post-collapse America). It hasn't been doing well lately, the Imperial Review Board doesn't like that being racist and obsessed with strength are portrayed as negative qualities, while viewers don't like it because it honestly isn't that good. The writer, already angry and resentful for having to turn the muscly Oni lass into a generically feminine piece of scenery on pain of IRB censure for spreading "Un-Japanese Values", is secretly delighted by Burn's victory. A new foe draws near, a no-nonsense nemesis to push our hero to his very limit!

Continue, so he's pissed off at the censors, is young and the project he wanted to do went up in smoke because no one would accept the idea without meddeling in it, and so he moves to Cali and meets the Gang looking for animators to help with their project.

The idea is given over a sushi dinner and he joins in exchange for the origanal project being made.

Is that what you want...I'll do it but, can I have some more information, then just what you have I know very little about Japan in the world of Victoria.

Sort of? The idea was he was actually in Japan, making this thing. He's by no means the only anime/manga artist who has been "gently persuaded" to make thinly veiled Pro-Empire propaganda, he's just one of the few who has a problem with it. Or, he would be, anyway.

I actually kind of like the idea of a Japanese artist/animator running away to California to escape obnoxious censors and mandated political overtones. Of course, if he's moving to America he may encounter a problem casting fantasy-not-Burns as his work's antagonist... Though, now that I think about it, the official line in Cali is that Burns is a bandit, right? The general public still doesn't know about the plans for independence? And even in the earliest drafts, the Victoria analog would be defined by bluster and incompetence, hence their need to be bailed out by The Noble Samurai...

As for general information as to what Japan is like, their economy went into the shitter during The Collapse and they went full Ultranationalist some time after, and have thus decided to give the whole Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere thing a second try. I don't know how complete their control is, but I sort of imagine that the cultural inertia from Japan's time as a peaceful nation (and, you know, America's ally) has been dissipating at a far slower pace than they would prefer.

I Like the Immagrent Patriotism story that would grow out of it...find his own american dream that his parents and Grandparents remember from when America protected them from the big bad PRC. People in Japan live long lives, I'm sure that he would have heard stories of better days.

He's Not the only one...I assume that some Anime companies have offices in North America to get away with making the stories they want with the more laxer censorship laws put in place to placate the populations memories of the first amendment.

Heh just wait til he sees the news and hears the truth of the matter, he'd make the Not Burns the big good plot twist of the show.
Though, now that I think about it, the official line in Cali is that Burns is a bandit, right? The general public still doesn't know about the plans for independence?
I assume they see Burns as a Civilized Warlord, like the KMT pre-Northern expadition.
As for general information as to what Japan is like, their economy went into the shitter during The Collapse and they went full Ultranationalist some time after, and have thus decided to give the whole Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere thing a second try.
Ahh, I take it they are having trouble with that.
I don't know how complete their control is, but I sort of imagine that the cultural inertia from Japan's time as a peaceful nation (and, you know, America's ally) has been dissipating at a far slower pace than they would prefer.
Hell I wouldn't be suprised if Japanise artists are trying to strike a balence between telling the People that the Ultranationalists are fools and being good little patriots...artists are like that.

Ahh, I take it they are having trouble with that.
The only reason Japan is not the Britain of the East in the modern day is because they had a fragile target mainland and an eagerly supportive Russia rather than a helpless-to-assist nominally coaligned continent and a Russia sprinting around breaking as much as they deniably could. They were in a fragile state for a long time and are, now, a Japan up against a fully-united and -modernized China.

Back now.
There is an official censorship office, or rather, not officially censorship, but very definitely officially a thing.
Its stated purpose is, "The promotion and propagation of Japanese culture, both at home and abroad."
And its services simply happen to be government-sponsored.
And (quietly, quietly, so much so that most of the public aren't aware) mandatory.

So, a work that uses Racism and being obsessed with strength as a means of showing that a bad guy is bad may come under scrutiny?

The amount of charity the censors would be willing to give it would be zero. Those themes alone would not get the author silenced, but absolutely any other toe out of line probably would.
So, the idea of him* leaving to California in order to actually make the anime he wants to make is entirely plausible. Particularly if he were to portray the "Monsters" (foreigners) in less of a Final Fantasy model and more of a Dragon Quest one (IE weird but not necessarily bad).

*And the sad truth is, it would pretty much have to be a guy to have any hope of actually having a career, considering the whole "Traditional Values" thing...

Okay...but he has to get beef with the gang help them with their odd sci-fi project and be one of the new leaders in American animation.
