I think it might be a red herring. There is a lot of weirdness around how Makoto's Senpai has been mentioned in this quest. For example:

why is Senpai a secret when canon Makoto mentioned him all the time? Also Senpai is always refereed to as Senapi or the neutral "person" never any gendered terms. If they were just a boy like canon there would be no need for this careful avoidance.

So I'm wondering if the issue was actually the reverse. That here Makoto's Senapi was a straight girl. Because:

fits just as well as Senpai being gay. It would also explain why Senpai is a secret, since talking about her would mean outing herself, while Senpai rejecting her because he's gay wouldn't.

I basically like the idea of Ranma being Makoto's Senpai.

On the topic of Makoto.. I'm going to point out, she seems to think Ranma's girl form is their base form?

Better to have Makoto answer questions than Sailor Jupiter. Plus it is right outside Makoto's house.
 
Ranma mistook a Senshi's identity, but one hopes that he can keep it to himself. If it somehow slips and spreads to the rest of the walking disaster area that is the Wrecking Crew, well, the Senshi do not need the petty but extremely aggravating distractions caused by that lot, not with everything else that they must do.

As for his decision to consult Mars, even if it is not Ranma's intention, the rest of Nerima's insanity always seems to follow him regardless. One can but hope for Mars' sake that it will not be the case in this instance.
