Happy to see more votes for Mars Command, but does anyone actually have an alternative to Jupiter for handling the rockets who isn't Nanoha? Everyone's talking about how dangerous she'd be for the job, but I haven't seen anyone suggest an alternative beyond 'do we really need Nanoha to seal the Jewel Seed?' (yes, we absolutely do) or 'just accept that we're going to be getting shot by rockets.'

Again, I'm fine eating some rocket strikes, I think it's probably survivable, but I'm kind of tired of people talking shit about the easy second best option for handling the rockets.
I know it's not winning right now, but it might be neat to see what a Jewel Seed activated by a Senshi does. :)

Unfortunately, not really. It's just that the second-best option we have for dealing with the rockets is at the same time the worst option we have.

The big question is whether the second-best solution is good enough. A second-best solution that isn't good enough to enable the helicopters to operate independently may make it not worth Makoto's time to try defending the helicopters from rockets, in which case the question of "can Makoto do something more impactful than dealing with rockets" does raise itself.

Of course, there is also the observation that just because we order Makoto to "do something about the rockets," doesn't mean she interpret "do something about the rockets" as "do exactly what Nanoha was doing, only less well because you have a different powerset." She might very well try to carry out the order in a different way...

Find the rocketeers and bomb them until they stop firing rockets at you?

EDIT:

Oh, wait, it's Sailor Jupiter.

Cook themwith lightning bolts :V

That's a really risky thing to want to see from the guy who's violently opposed to breaking evasion. As much of a pain as freeing a bound Senshi could be, evil Jewel Seed corrupted Venus could join the Dark Kingdom or something and be ten times worse.

For all that the helicopters get top billing as the rocket targets, they're not the only targets for the rockets, especially if they just leave. I'm pretty sure you've brought that exact point up before Simon, so framing it as just defending the helicopters rather than engaging the rockets is wrong. I remain unconvinced that the dangers of Jupiter's gravity powers are worse than the dangers of just getting shot by rockets unopposed. This also assumes that Jupiter, who knows her powers pretty damn well would use her gravity powers if she feels they're that dangerous, rather than just shooting back with lightning or something.

There's absolutely no call to say that she's worse than doing nothing at this task. Now there is an argument to be made that it's not worth taking an uncovered action that pushes us closer to the evasion limit, but if we're just considering this single action alone I can only see people's complaints about the risks as completely overblown and insulting to Jupiter's intelligence.

I mean, turning Venus into an angry kaiju might not technically be turning her evil, but that doesn't sound much better?
Okay, I guess "make it rain sulfuric acid over all of Tokyo" probably falls into:
  1. Could, conceivably, happen with the things involved if Venus were on the Jewel Seed
  2. Would be really, really, REALLY bad if Sailor Moon can't go beyond "Sliver of Silver" and fix it

The only other option that wouldn't involve a senshi coming up with something out of the blue would be Moon's Sparkling Sensation AA spell.

She already tried that, it didn't work because Serenity's ghost is being stupid. That's why Moon ended up blocking all those missiles with her face in the first place.
True, but at the same time I don't recall any of the other senshi having anything close to that sort of spell. Ergo for anti-rocket duty its Nanoha (who needs to go after the Seed) or ask the Senshi to just try something random/hope an ancient memory gets jogged.

Which is why Jupiter's the clear second best option, which makes her the best because Nanoha's got something higher priority to deal with.

Jupiter on Rockets was my backup plan to be clear, I'm happy to see Mars Command take the lead. I just got a bit tired of seeing people calling Jupiter a dangerous option, like any of the other Senshi can do better, or that just that she'd somehow do more damage than just letting the rockets hit us.

I mean her options for taking out the rockets are lightning or gravity manipulation. But looking at her spells, her only real ranged option is the Supreme Thunder spell which while potent; doesn't seem like the best option against lots of small fast moving targets. Well unless she figures out how to modify the spell or something.

I'm not sure where you're getting this conviction that this battle should naturally resolve in the next round. To my eye it looks like we're maybe half-way through. One front of the attack has broken, but another is making good progress and a third has merely stalled. If everything goes reasonably but not shockingly well, and we make progress on the other fronts at a similar rate to the previous rounds, we can maybe expect the other fronts to fall by round 6 or 7? That would have the whole battle be somewhere in the 40-80 minute range, which in the grand scheme of battles is pretty quick. Hopefully future rounds will have less word count allowing this whole event to resolve in a reasonable amount of real time, but as far as "will the other senshi have time to show up and do anything" I think the answer is "probably yes".

Also, I should remind you that the enemy commander also has limits on the range of commands he can give. The narration has explicitly told us he discarded the idea of complicated plans in favor of a relatively simple staged assault because he couldn't trust his subordinates to carry them out reliably. A 600 APM StarCraft player he is not.
If we are "half way through", I have to believe it would be because of Secret Imperial Surprise: Waves 4, 5, and 6 just being dropped on our heads, with 'Wave 6' being an actual Tarrasque. For real, if the actual action of this entire event happening, not including inevitable epilogues, it will eclipse in length the Cinderella Caravan, Operation: Slumber Party, and the I Hate Mondays 'episodes' combined.

In other discussions,
anyone actually have an alternative to Jupiter for handling the rockets who isn't Nanoha?
I did consider throwing out the idea of Venus using her movable cloud of whirling razorblade flak on the incoming rockets, but instead wanted her to see if she could find where all these troops are coming from.

We're definately much closer to the end than the beginning of this. 1/3 of Onogoro's forces have routed and won't be able to reform in time to be relevant, the West Gate assault is stalling and has very shaky morale, and while the third wave there will soon arrive if that's beaten they'll crumble. And the North assault force, while gathered together for one final major assault, is also unlikely to hold steady if both other assault forces have already routed; these feudal armies are likely to value self-preservation over continuing to fight if it looks like two out of three of their peers have already lost.

The Empty Faces, meanwhile, while still at large, are starting to run low on tricks. The prison break is tying up one of their two major teams, and bottled up by an intercept force that they can't easily slip past. The other is getting front-row seats to the faltering of the main assault, which probably isn't doing their morale any favors. And the independent Empty Faces are running low now that Whisper has bolted. All while basically none of their major objectives have yet been achieved.

We don't actually have to defeat the entire Onogoro force; we just need to break the assaults well enough that their morale shatters, and the rest will run as well. Most battles of this type are determined by when one army or the other starts to run, not by actually completely destroying one or the other.

Hmm...of the various plans, I'm choosing to advocate for this.

[X] Plan Mars Command

Mainly because it doesn't have Jupiter trying to do anything about the rockets, while trying to protect helicopters which have been pointed out as being much more susceptible to gravity shenanigans.

It's not just about the helicopters.

It's about the people fighting, and the heavy weapon emplacements helping them compensate for magically-enhanced durability on the other side, and the cover they're hiding behind and, perhaps more vital than all the others, THE STAR SHELLS. If Onogoro is once again free to shoot those down, then Team Good is stuck trying to fight people they can't see, with far less heavy weapon support and rapidly-eroding cover.

Yes, Nanoha hasn't intercepted all the ground-to-ground rocket attacks, but "not all" is still better than "none". And really it can't be overstated how much of an advantage being able to see your enemy is. Those star shells are vitally important to our side.

Thankfully, we've been told that, while not bottomless, the JGSDF howitzer teams firing the things started with a fairly descent stock provided by the USA. Hopefully between the last few rounds of having someone dedicated to blunting the rocket attacks we've helped them preserve their reserves enough to keep the skies lit for at least one round without that cover.

A fair point, on multiple counts- the rockets are a powerful enemy asset for several reasons. Although I think it's possible to catastrophize a bit about what might happen the moment the anti-rocket coverage was listed, it's true that as the enemy regains a greater fraction of that capability, they are likely to put it to use.

[X] Plan Mars Command

After not really contributing to the quest like I wanted the past few months, here's the plan I'm voting for because I feel it covers the most bases for getting shit done in dealing with the mess the Onogoro are causing.

Well that's a win for Mars Command. No one's on rockets, but Uranus will probably get here next turn, so she and Nanoha should hopefully cut their free reign short before too long. Now I've just got to hope Nanoha, Venus, and Moon can cash the checks my mouth has been writing for them.
