Honestly now we have a company backing us we just have to wait for our Attention to rise.

Merchandise will more than pay for most of our needs and will make the lives of anyone we want to recruit much easier.

In terms of "are past lives the same person" stuff, I've always headcanoned that if the Shitennou all got free of their brainwashing, the Senshi got a decent chunk of memories from their past lives, and they all sat down and got to know each other's current selves, they'd all be like "there are some obvious similarities, but in other ways they are completely different people."

Graceful classy pacifist Princess Serenity -> Klutzy crybaby enthusiastic-superhero Usagi Tsukino is one obvious case of this, but maybe Serenity was also a really picky eater or something just to contrast with Usagi's gluttony.

Princess Mercury and Ami Mizuno are both "the smart one," but maybe Mercury -> Hermes -> trickster memes mean that Princess Mercury was basically element-flipped Loki with even more boobs and even less melee, so now this sweet, quiet girl who deep down inside wants to get enough armor to safely punch things is a huge contrast.

Or Princess Jupiter and Makoto Kino both have the same physique and heavy-hitter role, but maybe Princess Jupiter's culinary talents were limited to "meat + fire" and if kilts weren't standard Jovian fashion no one could ever have gotten her to wear a skirt, so this modern version that loves girly things and is an excellent chef is a big change too.

And on the other side, maybe Silver Millenium Zoicite was quite straight despite the effeminacy and happily partners in bitchery with Princess Mercury while Silver Millenium Kunzite was married to his job (like Princess Venus, which is why they got paired off on paper), so modern Kunzite and modern Zoicite being in love with each other is new.

That would be a good way to handle it IMO.
I can picture the scene in my head: Tuxedo Mask, about to be crushed by the Zakenna when Sailor Moon leaps in and smashes the monster, with Tuxedo Mask's theme playing in the background for added effect. Maybe she'll say something like "Now I only have to save your life three more times and then we'll be even" (Did I get the right level of cheese for the rescue speech?).

And if the Precures actually arrive... well, maybe we'll get the mascottes diplomancing each other :)
As far as I know, the mascots of the first seasons are rather immature and sometimes capricious, unlike Luna and Artemis. They act like kids at times ... and almost all of the mascots in this franchise suffer from verbal tics. I think Luna will find Mepple and Mipple very ... strange - he came up with a mental retort.

"It feels like it's just like Usagi and I were swapped."

Graceful classy pacifist Princess Serenity -> Klutzy crybaby enthusiastic-superhero Usagi Tsukino is one obvious case of this, but maybe Serenity was also a really picky eater or something just to contrast with Usagi's gluttony.
According to the manga, this makes sense - both Usagi and Serenity were quite spontaneous, yet emotional and fearful.

According to the anime, Princess Jupiter was the figure skating champion. In this life, Mako-chan masters this sport without any serious effort.

Maybe she'll say something like "Now I only have to save your life three more times and then we'll be even" (Did I get the right level of cheese for the rescue speech?).
I'm not sure that she will be able to construct a coherent sentence - because in her head "oh he is so beautiful and mysterious! He likes me too?"

The question about how much sway a past life should have on a reincarnation, and to what degree they're the same or different people is complicated even more if we look at some of the stuff that happens in Inuyasha, given that we're crossed over with it to some degree. I mean, Kagome is a reincarnation of Kikyo in a similar way. But then IIRC the "Kikyo part" of Kagome's soul gets extracted out of her, becoming her own independent entity (sustained by the captured souls of maidens who happen to die in her vicinity?) with a distinctly different personality than Kagome's. And they have to deal with a weird love/enemy triangle between Inuyasha, Kagome, and her own past-but-now-somehow-present self.

And we/Serenity are usually treated as a voice in Usagi's subconscious so... *confused existential shrug*?

I'm not sure that she will be able to construct a coherent sentence - because in her head "oh he is so beautiful and mysterious! He likes me too?"
Except Usagi hasn't given Tuxedo Mask a second thought in this quest. A far cry from canon's 'Thinks about him all the time.' This is mainly due to Tuxedo Mask not really helping situations whenever he shows up. Usagi has shown much more romantic inclinations toward her Senshi, Makoto in particular.

Personally what I find interesting with this fight is Usagi and Pisard going toe to toe in unarmed combat. I've never watched Futari Wa Pretty Cure but from my understanding Precures tend to be pretty heavily melee focused so I'd assume Pisard was decent there. Usagi meanwhile never actually ended up attending a dojo or getting those pointers from Makoto so unless Serenity had unarmed training (which I find somewhat unlikely) this is all pure talent.

Usagi pre-hero was a lazy gamer girl, and both Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2 were out by 1992 when the plot kicked off. It's possible that Usagi is making up her lack of fighting experience by attempting to copy/reverse-engineer fighting game moves and is using her Senshi powers to brute force it into working.

And to put the cherry on top, one of the factions is the Nerima Wrecking Crew.

Ain't NO way to read this battlefield.

And it could still be crazier because we don't know what other crossovers could be in store for us. For all we know Kazuma Kiryu could be punching demons across the Kamurocho district at this very moment.

@Lunaryon I have to ask. Usagi is Craven and she also just got a crit on a combat roll. Is it worth a point on the no-longer-Craven meter?

Also since we have seen both of the canon pairings roll 10-1, does it mean the next round will have two instances of one saving the other?
You know, that is obvious in hindsight, but something that completely slipped my mind.

Similar to the fact that I never made an advisor for Prowess...

Funny enough I'm not sure if it Jupiter but I do know that Serenity loved to ice skate.

what would be the difference between prowess training and martial training, by the way?

Is martial strategy and tactics, while prowess is simply combat skill?

One possibility is that Martial is in regards to "mundane" strength and tactics, while Prowess is training with technological or magical enhancements. Some mook in a Tank with little military training has Prowess 50, but only Martial 5. For the Sailor Senshi, Martial and Prowess combine in for their transformations, as they use their "mundane" skills and martial arts while also shooting fire bolts and laser beams. Learning may expand the breadth and potential power that magic users can eventually use, but Prowess is about being able to apply it in combat scenarios.

You know, that is obvious in hindsight, but something that completely slipped my mind.

I thought you were slowly phasing out Prowess into Martial and Prowess is just the current difference between their superpowered abilities and their normal strength?

I like it, though canonically I'm pretty sure from what I've been reading that it was Princess Mars who was married to her job (vow of celibacy, if I remember rightly?)

I can picture the scene in my head: Tuxedo Mask, about to be crushed by the Zakenna when Sailor Moon leaps in and smashes the monster, with Tuxedo Mask's theme playing in the background for added effect. Yesbut.

I'd have to go back over the times he appeared, but I don't think Tuxedo Mask did save Usagi's life four times in his four appearances to date. At the cram school I think he really did more for Ami (though he was very helpful to her, healing her wound and everything!). And at Cinderella HQ we were doing pretty good ourselves. While he DID smash one of the youma good, I don't think he was directly saving Sailor Moon's life.

I can't remember how things went down at the fortune teller off the top of my head, and at the jewelry store they went as per canon, of course.

According to the manga, this makes sense - both Usagi and Serenity were quite spontaneous, yet emotional and fearful.
Their upbringings would have to make a difference there; Serenity was raised as Moon Kingdom royalty, and so inevitably should be comporting herself with more dignity, if nothing else, than Usagi.

According to the anime, Princess Jupiter was the figure skating champion. In this life, Mako-chan masters this sport without any serious effort.
Right... But being able to pick up skills from your past life doesn't mean all your skills are from your past life. Hence the idea of, say, Makoto being much more girly (and, as a side-effect, an expert cook), whereas Princess Jupiter could not cook and was about as girly as, say, Haruka in this lifetime.

Makoto has the cooking skills, she just learned them in THIS lifetime, which would actually make a lot of sense since she has years as a child living alone, something Princess Jupiter would certainly not have experienced.

I'm not sure that she will be able to construct a coherent sentence - because in her head "oh he is so beautiful and mysterious! He likes me too?"
OK, this is REALLY a case of you failing/refusing to differentiate between Quest!Usagi and Canon!Usagi. Please start doing that, because by this point @Lunaryon has put... I don't know, but at least a novel's worth of words into characterizing Quest!Usagi. She is recognizably similar to Canon!Usagi, but in many ways is her own character, especially when it comes to romance.

Quite true... except, well, Tuxedo Mask does tend to actually help. Like, last time at Cinderella HQ? He killed one of the two youma. Notably we didn't, though that was partly because Cindrellon had the sense to get the hell out of there when Usagi manifested a sonic attack.

But you're right that Tuxedo Mask's not consistently saving Sailor Moon's life, personally. And that in narration she gives him very little attention. Whereas she's definitely noticing Ami is cute (Ami is cute dammit, it's a valid description; I don't ship it but Ami is cute!) and she's outright fantasized about Makoto a time or two.

You know, that is obvious in hindsight, but something that completely slipped my mind.
Maybe the dice are trying to opine on the shipping wars?

Similar to the fact that I never made an advisor for Prowess...
The title would probably be something like "Royal Champion" or "Chief Bodyguard," and you can call it 'obvious in hindsight' but I call it 'good game mechanic choices.'

The only way to justify a Prowess boost to the main character from their score would be if they spent the bulk of their time hanging around the main character and, well, guarding their body.

Also right now Makoto would casually break that game mechanic like it was youma face, because she'd be conferring about a +5 to +7 to Usagi's Prowess, which is 'naturally' somewhere in the upper teens right now. And whereas we may well at least consider swapping Makoto out as Trainer if Sailor Venus turns out to have as good a Martial stat as I predict, we would never pull Jupiter off the Royal Champion slot IMO. Not as long as we spend so much time personally fighting things because, well, Senshi.

There's also a good underlying mechanical reason for Prowess to be different, because it's a derivative stat closely related to Martial. The only things that confer high Prowess without high Martial are things that aren't very portable from person to person, like Makoto's "Junoesque" trait.

I thought you were slowly phasing out Prowess into Martial and Prowess is just the current difference between their superpowered abilities and their normal strength?
There are other traits besides just the Sailor transformation that confer Prowess bonuses without (or in addition to) a Martial bonus. Makoto's aforementioned "Junoesque" trait is a good example; she basically gets it from being a tallgirl (especially by Japanese standards) and her martial arts background. It's something of a double-dip bonus because it affects Martial and Prowess.

On the other hand, the Sailor transformation confers advantages that I don't think are fully encompassed by the Tuning boost. I saw something indicating that Tuning is a three-stage trait, and the first stage only netted us +2, so I doubt that all three stages of Tuning will give us the full +10.

[Note that I suspect Sailor Venus has high Tuning, to reflect her canonical ability to perform nigh-superhuman or actually-superhuman physical feats even in her un-transformed state]

So there's a bit more of this than in cannon
We've had that meme three times, but it's genuinely unfair. Every time Tuxedo Mask shows up he does something, it's just not usually directly related to saving Sailor Moon's life.

Partly that's because he's clearly got his own subplot with objectives like "secure the gems" and "get back my sword" that we don't even know about.

Partly that's because we picked up Sailor Mercury in literally our second adventure, and teamwork is helpful, especially since in this chronology Sailor Mercury almost immediately jailbroke the Mercury Computer to give herself some actual attack spells. Then we really upped the ante by recruiting Sailor Jupiter, who singlehandedly goes toe-to-toe with dark generals.

We're generally less in need of rescue than canon Sailor Moon was in her first several episodes, or such is my impression.

I love that meme. :p

On the idea of the Head Guard position (Title pending) I'm thinking possibly something more akin to adding a smaller amount of Prowess across the entire faction instead of a sizable boost to Usagi alone.

But this is all very much still an in-progress idea that I am working on.

Omake: An Average Day at the Recruitment Office
Also, for recruiting them, we have an income now! Well, we're still setting it up really, but having someone with a lot of mundane sway and the power of money doing the right thing and deciding that means helping us is really something. Magical Girls live and breath the Power of Love and Friendshiptm, so expanding their help circles and friends a bit could help a lot.

Omake: An Average Day at the Recruitment Office

Several Years Into the Future...

Agent: Hello, and welcome to the Moon Kingdom's Bureau of Magical Investigation. How may I help you today?

Love: Hello, um, my name is Love Momozono. This may sound a bit strange, but I was at a concert earlier this week that got attacked by a monster. But then a fairy flew into my cell phone, which allowed me to turn into a magic girl and fight it off. All the ads on TV said that this was the place to report to if that happened, so, here I am.

Agent: It is regrettable that you had to experience an Awakening such as that. Our agents often try to detect new incursions before they have a chance to hurt anyone, but unfortunately there are many subrealms which view Earth as a target-rich resource to be plundered, despite all of our growing defenses. However, we are glad that you have reported promptly, so that we can take the appropriate steps to help you. First of all, does your transformed state have a title?

Love: Well, Pirun said that I would be Cure Peach.

Agent: Ah, one of the Pretty Cures, very good. And the name of your supporting realm and its opposition?

Love: Wait, does every realm have an opposition?

Agent: Not all realms, but generally any realm that feels the need to recruit Pretty Cure warriors has an opposing realm that threatens their existence. The Realm of Light has the Realm of Dark, the Land of Fountains has the Dark Fall, the Palmier Kingdom has Nightmare, and so on.

Love: …I think Pirun said that my power came from the Kingdom of Sweets, and that the people trying to "conquer all worlds" were from a place called Labyrinth.

Agent: Hmm, currently there are only some minor notes from the archives about that realm, but we will try to get researchers and envoys on the matter. Next, have you encountered any other people with similar powers to your own?

Love: Um, not yet. Do you think there will be others?

Agent: No realm we have ever encountered has ever only sent one Pretty Cure artifact at a time. At any rate, the Bureau has plenty of resources to help you become more capable. Some Pretty Cures who have opposing realms that are currently "in defeat" will be available to train you. There may be some minor variations in abilities, but we have gathered an extensive-

Love: Wait, if you have more experienced fighters who don't have their own monster realm to fight, wouldn't they be better suited to fighting the forces of Labyrinth?

Agent: Yes and no. We have found that the Pretty Cure artifacts are usually specialized in dealing with soldiers from their opposing realms. It is usually only through the experience and training gained from defeating the forces of one's opposing realm that a Pretty Cure soldier is skilled enough to handle opponents outside their "purview" as it were. So, it is usually best for you and your future team to be the "primaries" for the forces of Labryinth. But this brings us to the most important question of this meeting, and one that I am required to have you take 24 hours before providing a response: Is being a magical girl something you truly wish to pursue?

Love: What? I mean, I was under the impression that I didn't really have a choice, that I was one of the few who could wield this power-

Agent: One of the few, yes. Our Founders found themselves in a similar line of thinking when they first assembled to fight the Dark Kingdom. The Pretty Cure artifacts only respond to those with pure hearts, but the Sailor Senshi's powers were bonded to their very souls, with no possibility of transferring them to another. They accepted their responsibility, defeated the Dark Kingdom, and founded the Moon Kingdom with all the luxuries and protections we now enjoy. But while the world is immeasurably better off for their bravery and valor, they could not in good conscious make it mandatory for a teenage girl to be made into a soldier due to mere compatibility.

This doesn't mean to imply that you are unqualified; being chosen to wield a Pretty Cure artifact means that you can become a great magic wielder, especially with our help. But there's violence and even the chance of death along this path. Nobody would hold it against you if you decided that it wasn't something you wanted to get involved with. We can have our agents hold back Labyrinth's monsters long enough for Pirun to try and find another candidate. The fate of the world doesn't have to rest on your shoulders, but we'd be happy to have your help in keeping this world safe, and we'll make sure you don't have to do this alone. Here's my card; I suggest you go home and think long and hard about this.

Love: …I will. Thank you for your time. *takes card and leaves*

Receptionist: …So, how many actually take the option to opt out and leave it to someone else?

Agent: …None so far.

Woo! my first omake.

So the update is at about 600 words right now, but I have to head into work pretty soon. So the update will either be later tonight or more likely tomorrow morning.
