Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

I really don't think we should assume Grinning's art is dodge focused? It probably does give some dodge, but it is unlikely to be about offence/defence like SCS, but instead focusing on Mobility/Stealth aspects. Personal hope for Grinning is that it's not offensive like AFL/ENM though, as that would be a shame. Wouldn't be the first time the art blurb confuses me though.

Anyway, a fun argument for Dreaming moon art is that it's a combat banter art. A speech art that has 'Trickster King' in its name is basically all but certain to have a loki-ish vibe and giving Ling Qi a lot of either trash talking or more subtle plays.

Ok, so, arguments for Oratory:
  • It allows us to get more value out of training Speech, and gives more reasons to do so
  • If we ever want to achieve the dream of a music/speech combined, we probably need to train shit like this
  • An art like this provides good opportunity for manipulation based Speech advanced skill
  • It could allow us to really up our FVM/PLR gameplay. Like, we've got the environment and the physical messing with people down. What we really need to add to that is words. To pull people around even more and break their spirits with style.

Personally, I don't like the idea of Ling Qi being a trash talker or putting people down with words in combat. Saying a few cutting words at the right moments is fine and IC, but Ling Qi mostly sticks to the shadows outside of these moments. She isn't very talkative, nor does she spend too much time thinking about anyone that's not important to her. I think continuously talking down to her opponent in the middle of combat doesn't suit her very well. I'm also ambivalent about Ling Qi spending extensive time on Speech, even though it might be helpful for her role as CRX's vassal.

Well, now that I've had time to give the thread a quick skim, I like where the votes going, for a few reasons.

1: I'm a fan of bringing Wind back into our build.Assuming of course that an art from the Phase of the Moon that stole the Wind specifically referencing the aspect of that phase which stole the Wind uses Wind.

2.I'm hoping it will be a movement art that explicitly boosts Flight, which will be rare until Cyan, or strange/niche like the one we've seen. I'm only saying that because It has Flight in the name, and even though context implies a different meaning, if the Grinning Moon doesn't have a Pun or Double Entendre Keyword in their Domain I'll eat my hat.

While I don't think it's certain that it does explicitly boost flight, I'm hoping it does just so our friends ask us where we found such a good Flying art when we start showing off an Advanced Flight Skill, so we can say "Oh, this shit is CUSTOM"

{Imperturbable Starlight Mantle; Defensive Social and Defensive Combat art}

I yam's what's I yam and dat's all what's I yam. I'm Ling Qi the lunar ma'am.

Hmm, the angle of adding banter (not necessarily Ling Qi constantly trash talking, but more well-timed clever quips) is actually an intriguing notion TBH. Yrs already does good fight scenes when it's currently description only, so I'm now curious about what he'll do with combat dialogue. Eh, Grinning's still going to win, but I'll switch anyway.

Hopefully we will actually double down on stealth after this and not sit in the bad middle zone.

Grinning Moon's art is fine, and will probably win, but I too want a cool mantle of starlight. Remember, stars are eldritch chaos whose Qi we can only absorb safely by filtering it through the moon. So it's basically a chaos mantle.

As far as the Cai vote, I wasn't around for it either but my thought is-

Precisely everyone around Linq Qi assured her that the Cai offer was a great deal; the best opportunity she was likely to get. I think Jin was the only one to warn her about it, and that was in a "don't let your job eat your life" context, not that it wasn't a great deal.

Basically, Greed won out over fear of loss of Freedom. Which I found refreshing, because that's the kind of choice people make all the time and for many it works out just fine.

I actually thought of that scene while I was writing my previous post and realized it did contradict my argument. However, in my view it's one thing for a mortal to be forced into conscription and entirely something else for a relatively powerful cultivator to still be an insignificant cog in the machine.

I know the discussion has gone on and I'm late to the party, but I wanted to comment on this - not at you directly, just using this comment as a springboard - do any of us think Ling Qi is a powerful cultivator, yet? It's obvious she has good potential and speed of growth, but she's still only a second year apprentice, and not even one that's drawn the eye of a specific master to apprentice, just standard lessons and challenges. 'Powerful compared to a mortal' isn't powerful as a cultivator, is it?

I wasn't here for the Cai vote either, but it does provide us with more personal control of our situation than heading for basic military service. I don't like that the job doesn't have an end date, but since Ling Qi will have her own estate and future husband-to-be-arranged, it can't just be standing around at Cai's side looking helpful.

I wouldn't mind some future clarity on what Ling Qi's role will be, but I don't think Cai knows yet - does she want a bard or a spymaster? If Ling Qi becomes one or the other, is that better? Is both better? Cai's still figuring this out, too.

I see direct Cai vassalage as somewhat out of character, but with purpose - it's a very direct way to get lessons in politics she'll need to be a good noble, and Ling Qi is nothing if not motivated to get the best education possible at whatever she wants/needs to do. If politics is what she's going to have to do, she's going to be great at politics.

I don't think Ling Qi is ever going to be good as a spy master. That's the guy who sits at the office all day correlating the gathered information and deciding who needs to go somewhere and do something.
What she could be very good at is being a master spy, that is the person that goes to those places and does those things with maximum efficacity.
In other words, one is being M, the other is being 007.

And in my opinion, being a famous bard can be a great cover for doing spy work, so they aren't mutually exclusive.
