Reading the update it seems that Xuan Shi is very defensive whenever the subject of his books comes up, like he expects Ling Qi to mock him or whatever.
He should chill out, reading books as a pastime is as strange to her as meditative fishing, embroidery or shopping; Ling Qi own relaxtion practices include playing music and sneaking.
(She also knows jack shit about art so she can't even begin to critique the books even if she wanted too).

This is very true- and it gives us a lever to uncover a bit more about him. I think it's pretty obvious that his parents or family more generally frowned on his book habit- so giving him a safe person to get enthusiastic about them with is likely to lead to a lot of venting about family and growing up. Which is good both in terms of getting a friend and in terms of learning the internal workings of another ducal family.

I figure that with the way the golem doesn't seem to be much of a threat (based on Sundancer's argument) we can afford to try for skill gains. If it turns out we can't quite figure out how to disable the golem gently we can always switch over with Xuan Shi, though it would be a little embarrassing to do so.

Was originally on the defense side, but I've been convinced this might be interesting, also, kind of want to give Xuan Shi a chance to showoff, always liked the guy but he is getting a lot more interesting in this adventure.
