Xuan Shi just needs to show up and do his thing. It was half a year ago in real life that he told Ling Qi he wishes to woo her so the details had faded from memory, but I went back to check and when turtle boy is firing on all cylinders he's quite something:
"Lady Ling," he repeated, and the emphasis brought her up short. "One wishes to present their suit. This place is inappropriate, the official request to be made at the right time, but… You have said that I do not need to be reticent."
She didn't answer immediately.

"With you, one feels like the horizon is not so far away. With you, one feels as if his eyes gaze upon a bright night, to inspire song and poetry. One… I do not wish to be a coward any longer."
The SS Xuan Shi is not going to hold back in ship to ship combat.

Just because he's finding his confidence and learning a measure of assertiveness, doesn't mean there's romance-level chemistry between them. I'd actually expect better chemistry with Bao Qian once he really starts being more open and outgoing with Ling Qi--and even then, as has been said, Meng Dan just clicks with her and is already way ahead.

I get that some of you like Shelly more, but let's be realistic here: most people are vibes-based, not "well gosh he sure worked real hard and didn't give up, I guess I'll reward that instead of following my heart"-based. Heck, even in this more pragmatic society where politics and power are important, the guy with the best vibes competes anyway--it's not like he's this poor pauper that'd be an eschewing of responsibilty to couple with. He's rich af lmao, financially and socially.

As has been said, though, he's grown and has actually started putting himself out there now. The problem is, with what we saw of that, the chemistry doesn't feel like it's really changing. I think it will "improve," but only so far as the friendly relationship dynamic exists.

Tl;dr Meng Dan is just fun to be around. Weilu Power Couple Supremacy.

Am I the only one feeling like the current husbando wars talk is just people stating their opinions at each other over and over? This is a 100% a vibes conversation and that is not a grounds on which anyone can be persuaded. This feels all rather circular and pointless.

This post has me convinced that Meng Dan supporters and Xuan Shi supporters want completely different things on some fundamental level, and I'm curious as to what that distinction is.

Personally, as a Turtle Boy fan, I don't really get what you mean when you say Meng Dan just "clicks" with Ling Qi. Like, I enjoy their interactions, but although the flirting is fun and all, it doesn't really feel...important? Meaningful? I'm struggling to find the right word, but ultimately it just boils down to Meng Dan failing to impress me, I suppose. His charms are nice, but I'm looking for something a bit more substantial emotionally.

But hey, maybe he'll surprise me. I may be pro-Turtle, but I'm willing to be proven wrong if it means our girl gets the best partner possible.

Isn't that all shipping wars talk? Everyone that doesn't support your ship being undeniably wrong is just a matter of course :V

More seriously, I think there's still value in the conversation if it helps others understand why someone is choosing differently. Even if that doesn't change any minds, knowing and understanding different perspectives is still a good thing.

It's not just shipping wars. It's like 90% of lore discussions, 98% of vs debates, and 99.99999% of ethics arguments. One could even say that the style is universal, the question is whether the subject at hand is one you personally click with.

About the timing thing: literally only Meng Dan didn't have to back off and pump brakes. The other two are getting permission to move forward now that they haven't had, and this public "scandal" (heh) with Meng Dan should give them a better idea of our new boundaries.

Anyway I have this vision in my head of Luo Grin gal running off to see a foreign land and bumping into a Grin-equivalent foreign cultivator and them deciding to "Parent Swap" their nations because it'd be funny

If this is supposed to be Xuan Shi firing on all cylinders, it lowered by already quite low expectations to be considerably even lower.

She is more easily engaged with Meng Dan. She's warmed-up to him so quickly that even in their earlier conversations where she was still more defensive, he managed to provoke discussion and coax her out of her shell to a degree. Their conversations are fun; he has an ability to both be playfully combative and disarming at the same time, lending to those at-ease situations that also lead to some good bants.

Contrast this with Xuan Shi, where it often feels like he has to force a conversation along to get anything out of her--even after the not-his-romance-novel character and relationship development. (Also, when you phrase that storybeat in that way it's pretty prophetic, no?) They have definitely had pretty good deeper discussions, but that has been after a fair amount of development, which is something Meng Dan is only just getting started on in relative timescales. With Xuan Shi, those deeper discussions still feel very formal--familiar and effective, but in the way two professionals working in the same organization and trusting each other would. I am liking how their later scenes have started trending, but it's definitely still more of a trusted-associate relationship, and certainly not with much levity in comparison to Lanky-kun.

The short of it is that when Ling Qi feels comfortable with a character it shows. The conversations are more fun, her internal monologue is at easy enough that it feels like her musing can go any which way, and the conversation with it, and the walls are coming down quickly enough (with both of them) that I don't feel gated from deeper discussions because of any trauma or guardedness. Xuan Shi conversations to this day still feel like--feel like--Ling Qi is deliberating which window she is willing to talk to him through, and at each point in the conversation how much she's willing to pull the curtain back to show him anything.

Six months from now Meng Dan will already be past her deepest explorations with Xuan Shi.

Like it's cute that he's flirting with a mildly heretical Dreaming Way interpretation and also LQ. But he doesn't actually know that LQ is a student of (and potential enactor of) Arch Heresy.

Meng Dan got to see the splash area of a patented Ling Qi Adventure(tm) and during it a Meng Elder was killed and other Meng were sent to be ritualistically tortured and publicly executed by our friends. Woe to him when he finally gets to see us in the liminal. For a boy who cried because he thought he'd damaged a book of history, we'll see how he interacts with the woman that scours the field to clear room for new growth. I suspect he'll have complicated feelings about our attitude towards history
