Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Fair enough.

It's a turn during which we do not attack and do not defend. Sure, much like FVM, once the field is build up it's quite good, but we need to get to that point first.

Night parade and JT tech both have their uses, they are just different. Night parade is great for duels against ennemies like Ji Rong that are in your face, while plr is perfect if we have more time before getting hurt.

fair argument

In a real combat scenario against a peer+ duelist we'd prioritize our actual defense techs (SCS, TRF) and something more along the lines of FSS/Echoes and it's massive offense/defense aspect. Following up on that; if we have the breathing room for a setup art? I don't see us using Anthem before FVM and yes, PLR, because frankly they're stronger Arts whose effects don't come with the crippling weakness of being tied to ridiculously squishy summon constructs.

Anthem is an art that shines when used by a pure support protected by a dedicated guard tank like Kang, or at extreme range like the barbarian spiritualists, where the distance protects the summons from retaliation. In a 1v1(ish) scenario against an actual threat? It's a waste of meridian space.

Also keep in mind ghat Cai is going to give us some arts from her family's archives too. From a planning/gameplay standpoint, now is probably the time for yrs to give those to us so that we can properly work them into a build plan (and potentially why Cai wanted to talk).
It would certainly be convenient, but I wouldn't count on it.

What we SHOULD be doing is being prudent in our Art choices so we don't end up "filling up" on shiny but low-level arts like the ones seen in the archive. Instead, we should be saving space for more elite arts - Cai library arts, higher level Archive arts, successors to our long-running abilities, etc.

The ability to tank 2 attacks by simply having the birdies out is incredible. The only one that come close is deepwood vitality, that give only one stack of ablative defense in the first turn.

In a fight like Ji Rong (or any other single target dps without flurries), trying to build TRF up instead of anthem would be a mistake. This because TRF first tech provide only a single ablative defense to us. If we use the birdies, we get 2 ablative defense for the same action cost.

So if we compare both, using TRF we can get one stack of defense in the first turn. If we use anthem we get two. Assuming the ennemy can break trough one stack per turn, turn 2 we either way put deepwood vitality. For the pure trf we are at one stack of ablative defense (as the first has been popped). For anthem into trf, we now have three stacks (one bird, one from trf on the bird and one from trf on us). It's significantly better because it means we can instantly follow up with all of FVM, as the ennemy will take three turn to break trough all our defenses and by then we will be able to activate the FVM nuke.

From a defensive viewpoint the birds are damn incredible.

We don't - and shouldn't - have every Art we train equipped simultaneously. This is why I've mentioned a 'Sideboard Stealth Suite', that allows us to go full infiltrator without compromising us when in a team combat situation.

We can always drop Arts we don't like the themes of that we can still train, the way we'll be doing shortly with AE, and we can always change what we want as our part of our 'main suite', relegating other Arts to the sideboard for niche purposes (AFL fits here) or to the 'dumping ground' of 'not going to train again'.

Sure, it isn't easy. The Meridian System makes it rather difficult, as does the mere handful of Arts we pick up from each Archive Dive. However, SES and DLS are, together, a potent example of two arts that use the exact same spines to different effects - SES focuses on countering dispels and enduring debuffs, while DLS has a strong focus on Fade and avoiding Spiritual effects entirely.

And without Arts like those, we'll need to rely on jig-saw puzzling our way to coherent Art Suites, as we've been doing so far.

We can probably have eight to twelve Arts equipped at any one time by the Tournament, depending upon how much scrunching we do in advance... which is another reason to keep looking into 'low-level' Arts: their successors. It's easier to learn an Art if you already know the preceding Art/s.

We most desperately shouldn't Slot every Art we train, either, given how Keywords seem to work when slotted into a Domain.

And that's probably the biggest reason to look into as many Arts as we can - Arts to slot. Picking the right Arts to slot is crucial, and just slotting the 'best Arts' is not how Domain works.

The 'quality' of an Art determines the strengths of it's passives and techniques at any given Art Level and Potency. It has no effect on Domain.

The potency of an Art determines the level of Cultivation required to learn that level of the Art. The only effect this has on domain - that we are aware of - is that Arts below Potency 7 (Green/Bronze 1) can't be slotted into a domain at all.

I certainly agree that we want higher quality arts, especially successor Arts to our signatures, but don't dismiss an Art solely because it comes from the first floor of the Inner Sect Archive.

Turn 2: End
"So, that was the source of your unease, and that strange question," Cai Renxiang mused.

They stood in one of the mountain's many training fields, to take advantage of its privacy. It was one of her liege's preferred venues, a field of paved stone filled with two meter tall stone pillars spaced just far enough apart for a single person to squeeze between. They spoke in the only exception, a small cleared space in the center one meter by one meter wide.

"If you noticed, why didn't you ask?" Ling Qi said, standing straight with her hands hidden in her sleeves.

Cai Renxiang raised an eyebrow, meeting her eyes without seeming to look up, despite their difference in height. "It is not my business. Would you prefer that I pry into your personal matters?"

"I guess not," Ling Qi replied, looking away. "...Did I do something wrong, during the challenge? Or was it Yu Nuan? I mean It wasn't very flattering, but…"

Cai Renxiang shook her head. "No, if the empire censured things so vague as that, it would have shattered already. The mere attempt was the final seal on the tomb of the second dynasty, not only for anger it engendered, but the weakness and lack of confidence such actions betrayed."

"You can't have strong cultivators without some freedom of expression I suppose," Ling Qi replied wryly. "So that leaves my other question."

Cai Renxiang crossed her arms, her expression drawing down into a frown. "I am aware that your reasons for swearing yourself to me were a mixture of mercenary and personal interest. I did not object to this as I have observed that your loyalty is strong, despite that. Yet, I had not considered that you lacked understanding of what I desire, rather than simply being ambivalent to it."

Ling qi's hands tightened inside of her sleeves as she looked down. "We haven't spoken much about your goals," she admitted. "But… what you want is a peaceful and orderly society isn't it?"

"In the simplest terms, yes," Cai Renxiang looked troubled, the gleam of light around her shoulders sending the shadows of the pillars flickering wildly.

"While I was composing that song, my mind kept turning back to what I saw in the dream," Ling Qi continued, as if she hadn't spoken. "The death, and the chaos and everything else. I don't want to see something like that again… and it's the opposite of what you want isn't it? That should be reason enough to support you. Even if it isn't sustainable in the long run. Having something better in our lifetimes is worth it."

Cai Renxiang closed her eyes, and for a moment the field was silent. When she opened them again, her gaze was cool and serious. "Do you know, what I saw, after my fitting to Liming was complete?"

Ling Qi found her eyes watering slightly at the sudden brightness assailing them as she matched her lieges gaze. "I can't say I do," she said, a touch of nerves entering her tone.

"I saw the world's inefficiency," Cai Renxiang replied. "The tangled threads where want overrode need. Where systems constructed nigh wholly by self interest and greed left ragged holes in society's tapestry, and left thousands to languish unfulfilled. I saw the frayed weft of a city still reeling from a war of gods."

Ling Qi recalled that Cai Renxiang would have been six years old at the time, and she found herself understanding some of the girls oddity. "You must have resented being forced to see something so ugly," while she couldn't wax lyrical on it without some time to compose, the petty ugliness of the streets and the savagery of the Hunt had both given her similar feelings.

"Perhaps, to a small degree, but Mother's work was not allowed to be corrupted so easily," Cai Renxiang replied with a shake of her head. "I still see those things, and it fills me the need to repair them, even as I am forced to engage with the broken loom it all hangs upon. If you never take anything else I say to heart, than take this Ling Qi. "I wish for a world in which all who fall under my responsibility can leave ordered and fulfilled lives."

"Even the ones who don't fit into that order?" Ling Qi asked wryly.

"Most, I think, would fit in peaceably enough, if not for the damages inflicted by the current state of things, that is simply a matter of time and transition" Cai Renxiang said confidently. "And those that remain are merely those whose requirements have not yet been accounted for. I firmly believe that with their needs met and acceptable avenues open for their wants, the citizenry of the empire will be better and more productive than ever, benefiting everyone."

The way she said it sounded so… dry and mechanical, but Ling Qi thought she understood where the other girl was coming from. How much of the ugliness that she had known would disappear into the wind without desperation driving it? Not all, of course, not nearly that, but a great deal regardless.

However, Ling Qi, there is something you must understand," her liege continued. "This will be a thankless task. You will not be above my laws, I will not create them with your direct benefit in mind. I have bent certain rules in last years proceedings, for the purpose of testing, but I will not weave such expectations into the foundations of what I seek to build. The Outer Sect was a testing ground, and what occurred there is to be remembered and learned from, but it must be left behind. You do understand that?"

"I do," Ling Qi replied slowly, thinking uncomfortably of her role in working with Fu Xiang. She would rather not get entangled in that sort of favor trading again anyway, it reminded her too much of the way things had been before. Still, she wondered if Cai Renxiang knew about it, the way she had phrased that… If she was so good at ferreting out secrets what had she even brought Ling Qi on for though? "Lady Cai, what you provide in 'fairness' is more than I would receive almost anywhere else, and...I believe in your good intent, I will not step away from that."

"As you say," Cai Renxiang replied, briefly closing her eyes. "There is much more yet to say, but those are conversations for a more comfortable venue. Not the least of which is that I may have to reevaluate your role."

Ling Qi blinked, raising her eyebrows in alarm. "...What does that mean?"

"That your skills as a musician may be the more important one," Cai Renxiang replied seriously as she stepped past her, heading for the exit. "You require more training… and more than a little discipline, but a more public diplomatic role may suite your skills better. Come, I would like to discuss the thematics I would like you to incorporate for your performance at this month's gathering"

Sixiang, silent until now started laughing, and Ling Qi's eyebrow twitched.

...More mingling, just what she wanted. It seemed that the sacrifices were just beginning.

In the wake of her challenge, the rest of the month passed by quickly, as Ling Qi returned her focus to her cultivation. There were a few spots of minor excitement. Meizhen challenging into the low seven hundreds, a memorable display by Xiulan that carried her up to a rank in the eight hundred and forties, and less memorable medicine mixing contest that left Li Suyin with her current rank. Her spars with Cai Renxiang began take on a more serious edge, and in the process inspired her to research arts that could fortify her other techniques against removal. Facing her liege was kind of a nightmare without it. The blazing light of the Cai family's arts burned away her mist and phantoms before they could even properly form, scattered her darkness and shattered her armor, leaving Ling Qi to scramble among the pillars to avoid the glowing saber that carved through stone like warm butter.

Though the memory of the dream still haunted her in the moments where she had silence, Ling Qi had few enough of those that she was able to forge on regardless, and the next month would be no less busy. With the massive influx of funds she had received from auctioning off that strange mirror, and the Sect points she had gathered, she was ready to begin pushing toward her full potential for growth.

Gains this month are for this turn and last. Ling Qi will receive a small trickle of xp to lower skills used during her offscreen obligations and other minor actions going forward. Skills at rank C or higher will require specific investment.

Where've the skills gone? You may wonder. The answer is that skill training will no longer be tied to Art keywords. Instead, you will receive a certain number of dice, and you will divide the pool among your skills as you like. Training arts with matching keywords will add a +1 to each dice rolled for that skill in the turn it is trained. Attributes and advanced skills will 'cost' 2 points for every one actually rolled. A skill or attribute can roll dice up to half the number of your lowest cultivation category. Right now with Ling Qi at Physical Cultivation(7) that number is 3. Your total point pool is 40

You will still be receiving minor skill gains during events.

This is incorrect, as they are two different types of action.

Deepwood Vitality is a direct response to an attack that would otherwise cause wounds, and our Insight during the Tournament made it into a perfect defense, guaranteeing that it would absorb a single attack, even one superior to it. Furthermore, DV can protect up to ten individuals simultaneously.

EANP's 'Stolid Guardian Pipers' do not seem to be capable of being used in such a fashion, as it is an Art intended to summon backup musicions. If we have prep time to summon them, then yes; but even then, the Pipers can only protect against two attacks per cast.

Furthermore, TRF provides outright superior effects in Thousand Rings Unbreaking (at level 6), which prevents an otherwise incapacitating or lethal blow from killing the user, once per scene.

In short, AENP's Stolid Guardian Pipers are ablative shielding, but are inconsistent in that role, while TRF's defensive theme (Theme keywords: Armor, Vitality) makes Deepwood Vitality a guarantor of our, and our allies, health.

AENP's theme is similar to that of the "Night Parade of a Hundred Demons," as evidenced by the fluff in the summary of the Art and the 'theme' keywords of 'Fear' and 'Summons'.

If you like that theme, great; please don't call AENP something it isn't.

I do like AENP as a standalone Art; I don't like it relative to Ling Qi's other Arts.

Oh, an update.

Poor Qi. She gets to play music and improve the depth of her art, but she also has to do even more socializing. Goddamn extroverts, just leave us alone to our drugs and our flute.

Also, hey cool, Skill training is changed now.

If I'm up to date on what the vote-smiths have been discussing, it might be time for MEGA MUSIC MONTH.

Remember that we're on a more narrative combat system, rather than a pure mechanical one. A high quality physical defensive art like TRF will simply be better at defense than a lower quality non-defensive art like EANP. Quite frankly Yrsillar just won't interpret it otherwise. It would be rather silly.

Well that's going to possibly change things. @yrsillar , since nothing has the Woodwind keyword, does everything with the Music keyword add +1 to Woodwind dice? If we train multiple arts, or multiple AP of the same art, with the same keyword, do we get multiple +1's or only one? I can see either way as causing problems honestly. If you only get one +1 even with multiple arts with the same keyword, then that's a large incentive to spread out training arts, ie something like a music month like we're thinking of is penalized. If on the other hand you get multiple +1s, we could make rather huge gains in a single month.

OK, this is interesting. The lack of Presence/Manipulation/Woodwind confirms that we don't actually gain stat/skills from challenges. We'll have to take this into consideration when making those. E.G, challenges must be done only for rank benefits, and not for the experience of the contest.

Oh, and @yrsillar, 'lower 700s' for Meizhen means she is 720~, or 780~ ? In this contest, 'lower' is confusing.

Yes, advanced skills continue to receive bonuses for keywords that match what they came from

also no music month is not penalized, under the old system you'd get 2 dice for music no matter how many music arts you trained.

This is not how you build loyalty in your subordinates, Renxiang!

So we can only get a +1 towards music no matter how many keywords have music, or no matter how much ap? I think this is fine, and it's certainly NOT a nerf to what we had before, like you said. It's just that it incentives making sure that, for important skills, you have something with the keyword for the skill being trained every month. So while you can still do a music month like we're planning, it could mean that you have no more music arts to train next month, which is worse for the music skill than having something to train in the months ahead. Not the end of the world, and this interpretation is probably better than getting like +18 towards Woodwind dice next turn, but it's something for us to keep in mind.
