Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Wind Thief's The Opened Vault project does seem like it would pair well with him. He's got the chops to assist in a number of ways, and I bet we'd even get to walk away with some loot from practice. The Laughing Wind... probably a lot less appropriate, what with the whole imprisonment thing. :V

Given that it somehow noticed Ling Qi's breakthrough into the first few levels of Wind Thief, I suspect it's very closely connected to that Art somehow, possibly even to its creation.

Yeah, Sixiang really isn't keen on Bonedaddy and we're obviously going to talk to him again anyway, so I do think we should do a more fun Dream project with them next.

And while it's no Weilu party, we do know a good revel site and have an excuse to go there through both Xuan Shi and the PLR project The Dreaming Gala. Given that said project also gives +1 Dreamwalking, I feel like going to the party before returning to the hungry skeleton dream prison is a good call.

We could even double down and do the Dreaming project to rank up Truth before going back, but that can probably wait a bit? We've got plenty of other stuff to do, after all, and we haven't even seen what else this turn has in store for us.

Also, mechanics-wise, unless I'm misreading things, the talent multiplier isn't the only thing to take note of if we're talking XP multipliers. Based on this text right here -

we earn XP faster once we have the non-XP prereqs for a given level done, and from the table:

we can see that we finished getting the 5 insights, 1 advanced insight, and 8 concept levels necessary for Framing a while ago.

So really, we get a *6 (Talent) * 1.5 (Prereqs done) = *9 multiplier for all base XP gains.

This turn, we've so far earned ourselves:

100 Untyped XP from our base cultivation,
30 Spiritual XP from our Hidden Moon project,
50 Grinning XP from our Arc Feat, and
30 Untyped XP from Arc Completion.

Now, the Grinning Project gives Physical XP, so the 50 Grinning XP could either be untyped or physical depending on how feat XP actually works. As for the untyped XP, that could either apply to both cultivation types, or it could be split between them - we don't have enough information to say. Assuming for a moment that Grinning is physical and untyped is split, our total gains so far look like this:
95*9=855 Spiritual XP, 115*9=1035 Physical XP.

If Grinning is untyped and untyped fully applies to both Spiritual and Physical, that looks more like this:
1890 Spiritual XP, 1620 Physical XP.

The precise number we get could, of course, vary depending on exactly how things get broken out; we'll have to wait and see. But as long as we can maintain our 9x multiplier, we should be able to accrue XP quickly, and given how many Concept Levels we already have and that FSS+ is near the top of our todo list, we probably will be staying ahead of our prereqs for the foreseeable future.

(Any corrections to the above analysis are welcome.)
I have to caution that we do not want to combine inviting Xuan Shi to a moon party with the Dreaming Gala project.

It looks like a good match at first glance, but the narratives clash against each other hard. Ling Qi can't take her first step exploring the meaning and chaos of the Dream revel and escort Xuan Shi while probing after Kongyou at the same time. It's pretty much obligatory to have the former to do the latter. If we'd gone to this revel, maybe enough of the first-time stuff would be out of the way for it to work, but that's not what we have to work with.

Minor interesting character resonance here: Sixiang and Grandpa Flowerbones both called Ling Qi a liar.

Perhaps LQ is sincere, but she certainly says plenty of things of questionable truth value.

So, some thoughts on Sixiang's new ability
Dreaming Masque (G) 1: Born from dream and thought it is not such a stepto leap from one vessel to another, if only temporarily. Sixiang may seize control of summoned constructs and even lesser spirits, layering themself over it like a mask. Theoretically possible to do to a human as well though difficult.

I can't help but notice that this seems very much like what the demons do South of the Wall are attributed to doing, essentially wearing people like players on a stage. I wonder if Sixiang got inspired to do this based on what we heard in the Land of Always Winter? It wouldn't surprise me if Sixiang got inspired by the legends of liminal creatures she heard of during our trip.

Certainly a versatile ability, masquerading as a lesser guard spirit, a minor spirit of wind, or other such minor spirits could be a very useful technique to gather information or sneak into a more secure location.

A couple of thoughts about the priority of future projects and exploration avenues of the Liminal Realm!

High
The Dreaming Gala - I increasingly want to explore the Liminal realm, and I had high expectations from the start, and going back to the Dreaming Gala seems to be one of the most consistent ways to increase our dream walking skill. Also, given that we have advanced to a point where we can suddenly see things differently, I want to explore that bit of the liminal realm with more skill and insight. Will also show up Sixiang and demonstrate that we can have fun!

Medium
The Shattered Gaol and the Tales from the Crypts - I have a strong feeling that the Horned Skeleton has a lot of insight to share about various concepts I'm interested in having Ling Qi pursuing. Power and Want certainly, but I think the biggest will be Isolation. If there is anything we can discuss with the Horned Skeleton it is the nature and effect of Isolation. That being said, it would do poorly not to be prepared for talking with it and we should employ caution not to cleave too closely to how it perceives the world. However, this thing has been around since before the formation of the Empire (probably, maybe. It's certainly hinted to have been around during the Mason's War) and so he can certainly wait a few more months while we wrap up important matters.

Medium-Low
The Burrowing Behemoth - Possibly some sort of connection to Zhengui's history? Not really much to go on with this one, but it certainly seems to warp the liminal realm around it, given just how much burrowing through dream and memories it does. Certainly, an interesting way of traveling around the liminal realm and possibly some interesting finds from interacting with it.

The Bleeding Mountain - A liminal representation of the mountain that the Li had their stronghold at, and certainly seems to whisper a lot about who the Li were and what they wanted. Secrets are certain to abound within the Bleeding Mountain, but I'm not too sure how much interest they will hold. I would like to explore it at some point, but there are other options that I think we should do first, like interacting with the choices above this option.

Low
Nightmares of the Long Knives - We need to get the Dreamwalking skill all the way up to 10 from where it is currently (1) before it is recommended to attempt this place. This means that for exploring the liminal realm, this place is as low as it gets for me before we reach that recommended prerequisites.

Distant Opportunities
Xiangmen - The capital of the Emerald Seas, the seat of power for the Cai clan, it is both father and mother to the vast forests that engulf the Emerald Seas. A storied history of having the Hui occupy its boroughs who worked the liminal realm extensively. What secrets still lay hidden within the roots of Xiangmen, what gleaming glories lay shrouded by its leaves? I think exploring the liminal realm around Xiangmen would be extremely interesting if a fair bit out from where we are currently.

Thunder Palace - Yu Nuan has an invitation to visit the Thunder Palace once the King of the Skies no longer expresses themselves above the world. We should visit as well! Both the physical and liminal aspects of the Thunder Palace would be an exciting prospect, especially for a practitioner of the Thief of Winds

Sky Palace Koliada - A seemingly mega-project being built by our prospective allies that always requires more hands for its construction. What is it, what purpose does it hold, how is it being built, and why? Things to ponder if we can ever get over there. But another thing to do is explore the liminal realm around the project and see if we can't glean any insights about the people constructing this massive project.

Yeah, I don't think rooting around in the liminal realm right under Shenhua's dye, while being a direct vassal, is a great career move. It's even more of a pr disaster if that spreads to court.

Just an interesting point from the update that the spear is bronze in the Dream.

She beheld the site of a low, wide cavern with a sense of creeping familiarity. It had been over a year since she had seen this place last, but she had seen it. Sluggish black water lapped at the muddy shore and she remembered the treasures pulled from it. The shard of solid darkness from which her domain blade had been carved, the deathly mirror whose sale had funded her cultivation for a year now, and the near forgotten seed pods still resting in her storage ring in the material world.

And, in the center was the horned skeleton, wrapped in vines, covered in black flowers, bleeding the liquid that filled the pool, driven into the earth at its side was a bronze spear, but now the thing flickered with a ghastly green radiance.
Because I checked with Yrs on discord, and the spear being bronze here compared to actual physical tomb it is Jade on RR is deliberate.

In the center of the island was a single corpse lashed to a twisted pillar of rotting wood. Roots and branches speared their way between bones and intertwined with mummified flesh, and black flowers bloomed from empty eye sockets. Vines wound around the figure, holding it so that it would not fall, even in death. The corpse was taller than a normal man, and a pair of pronged, branching horns growing backwards sprouted from its temples. A spear of gleaming jade taller than Ling Qi was planted in the rock and bones to its right.
The distinction is rather important as we were told from the Bloody Dream that the rebel faction of the younger brother bought metal from the Bai, and we saw a prince wielding a spear of polished bronze in that memory.
"They bought metals and stone from serpents and apes and laid siege to our most sacred temples.
The change makes sense as of the possible sources* for a spirit capable of answering the why things ended up like they did the Younger Brother seems the most likely one,

*The other two candidates that come to mind would be the patriarch who was the father of the brothers, and the Nightmare being a fragment of he who was Tsu the Diviner.

It could just be one of the Weilu who fell from grace.

With all honesty I can say I've never been disappointed when Yrs says they're delaying a post, it always means we're getting something good.

Turn 13: Arc 2-1 First Tour
The sights she had seen in the realm of Dream still filled her mind even now, well after she had passed back through the ring gates and packed both them and the idol away. She still saw the crumbling city ruins balanced so precariously, lives and experience piled high built atop their predecessors until the oldest were but dust and sediment.

The bleeding mountain, and the behemoth with Gui's eyes stuck in her mind as well, mysteries she itched to discover. Then there was that itching whisper.

Power and Want.

She couldn't deny that those simple words compelled her. Divorced from the immediate fear of the moment, she was left to dwell on what she had felt down in that mouldering prison. It was familiar, she couldn't deny it all. She felt a draw to that whispering skeleton, and a kinship that felt deeply uncomfortable. Somehow she was certain that they were similar. She just couldn't be certain if that was merely an imposition on her mind.

She couldn't shake the feeling that he would be sad if she never returned though. It was lonely, to be a prisoner.

"I can't feel anything influencing you, but he might just be better than me," Sixiang huffed.

Ling Qi acknowledged that. Then again they had known exploring the Liminal realm would be dangerous.

"Guess so, nothing ventured, nothing gained," Sixiang chuckled.

"Hey Big Sis are you alright? You've been staring off into space since the wagon got moving," Hanyi's voice brought her out of her thought and Ling Qi cracked her eyes open. Hanyi was sitting across from her in the cluttered and cramped workshop which took up the back of Bao Qian's wagon. The young ice spirit had already dressed up somewhat. She wore a dark blue gown that contrasted with her pale complexion, a graceful thing that Meizhen had helped her pick out. Her hair had been tied back in several braids, and threaded through with white flowers, which her friend had assured her symbolized the coming of winter.

All in all, she looked like quite the little noblewoman, despite the bare feet kicking away and sending the hems of her gown flapping.

"Just thinking about things," Ling Qi chuckled.

"Mm, it's cause you went on that weird trip, you shoulda taken me and the dummy with," Hanyi said, accusingly crossing her arms.

"Maybe another time," Ling Qi said. She didn't know how well tey would handle it.

"You'll want to work on your own skills first," Sixiang murmured.

"Besides, you were busy," Bao Qian has told me how much work has been going into this," Ling Qi said. "This isn't just one show it's a whole tour."

"Yeah," Hanyi said proudly, either mollified or forgetting her previous annoyance. "There was a whole bunch of work, and even though I didn't get most of it, there was a bunch of stuff about each stop that I had to memorize, local spirits and stuff, since I'm doing more than just singing."

"Well, i trust that you're well prepared," Ling Qi said absently glancing toward the front of the wagon. Whatever else she might say of Bao Qian he was a dependable sort. Although, coming from the Dream…

Ling Qi found herself eyeing the flows of energy through this wagon, lingering on the entrances and exits, Since her journey with Sixiang, she had found her senses sharpened in an unexpected way. The places between, doorways, boundary markers and others stood out more sharply. It made sense in a way, training her senses to interact with the realm of Dreams left her more sensitive to other liminal spaces.

She did wonder though, what it was that made Bao Qian regard this cluttered wagon as his home, over the manors and lands of the Bao.

"We will be arriving shortly Ladies and spirits, prepare yourselves!" His voice called back to them.

Well, it wasn't really her business, Ling Qi thought. She smiled and leaned over to pat hanyi on the head encouragingly. She was looking forward to her junior sisters performance.

***

The first stop on the week long tour was the largest venue. Bao Qian had begun by soliciting the barons of the south central valley region, and he had secured agreement from several before his efforts had attracted the attention of Vscount Chao. In this region, so close to the Wall, all but a handful, of families were relatively young. This Viscounty was no different, and its current owners had only held the title for some two hundred years.

It was for this reason, Ling Qi suspected that they were eager enough to try new things. They were not performing in the Viscounties capital though, but rather its largest agricultural settlement.

Ling Qi had thought that she understood what farmlands looked like, having seen the rolling tea fields of the sect and the walled fields and pastures of Tonghou. This was rather larger. Empty, harvested fields, set for winter stretched in every direction nearly as far as she could perceive. Neat roads cut between fields and scattered structures gave the feeling of a dozen tiny villages rather than a large town.
However, between her efforts at gardening and her recent journeys it was easy to tell that this region was as walled as any town or city. Thick lines of growth marked the border between wilderness and civilization, trees packed so close together that they were a living bulwark, reinforced with formation arrays old enough to have become part of the living qi network of the trees themselves.

The venue itself was near the center of the widely spread settlement, a grand pagoda with a green tile roof, and walls of living wood, like everything else here, the pagoda sprawled, taking up an entire hill with its structure and grounds.

"Quite a pretty structure is it not," Bao Qian said casually as the walked up the winding ramp which led into the temple. Hanyi had left them hurried away by attendants and junior priests to prepare her for the show.

"It is," Ling Qi said, looking over the scrollwork on the handrails of the ramp and the glimmering garden that lay beyond. The air was filled by the faint music of a small river which wound around the hill and watered the fields beyond. "What did you say it was called again?"

"The Springmist Temple," Bao Qian replied. "The second largest temple in the south central valley, it looks after the yearly flooding and the fertility of the valley."

"Hm, are you sure this is appropriate for Hanyi then?" Ling Qi asked, not wanting to fret but being unable to quiet her worry.

"I have been assured that it is. Winter's have been growing harsher, but the priests have not yet been able to pin down a spirit to propitiate for this," Bao Qian replied. "I have exchanged numerous letters with the head priestess of the temple and viscount Chao to confirm the details."

"I see," she was being ridiculous. As they passed through the entrance of the temple her nose filled with the smoky scent of burning incense and fragrant wood smoke. Inside the temple she saw people gathered. Not lay worshippers, not here. They would be outside, for the procession that would follow. Here there were only gathered nobles of the region, here to oversee and view the rituals and the performance that was part of it.

Bao Qian's voice tickled her ear, though he had not leaned closer, nor had his lips moved. Indeed he was smiling pleasantly at those who had looked up to see them. "There are two main groups here from my experience. There are the nobles whose lands line the main road which currently ends in the ruins of Black Lotus Pass and agricultural goods, and those whose lands are further into the hills and produce the valleys metals and finished goods

Ling Qi shot him a look even as she bowed in greeting to the gathered nobles, and he just looked impassively back. Well, it wasn't as if she didn't know the secondary purposes of these gatherings. Cai Renxiang and she had embarked on quite a difficult project and they wouldn't be able to do it alone. The Wang and the Sect would surely support them militarily, but protecting your land was only the first step. It had to be made prosperous for people to thrive. They couldn't expect to be directly supported by the Count clan of the area, the Diao, at least not at first.

No, she had to decide on an objective to pursue first.

Nobles on road seem to deal with flow of trade and agriculture which stems closer in Hanyi role here and seems more important.

Obviously we want both trade and domestic production in the long run, but if we're picking one to do first, my impression is that we'll want trade to immediately take advantage of any import agreements we can set up. After all, even if it may take a while to set up long-term trade agreements for specialty goods, setting up bulk exchanges of metal (or basic metal products) for wood (or basic wood products) shouldn't take too much time, assuming we have the trade connections established in the first place.

Unless I'm just missing something? I don't think this is a particularly complicated issue, but I'm always wary of politics.

Winter's have been growing harsher, but the priests have not yet been able to pin down a spirit to propitiate for this,
A sign of the Iron-toothed Crone's northward migration! She hasn't (yet?) reached the Empire proper, but we know her migration was one of the reasons the Cloud Tribes felt the need to evolve and adapt, splitting into those who are integrating into the White Sky Confederation and those who are forming the Twelve Stars Confederation.

This might be a good negotiation point we could use to gain more allies in our diplomatic efforts and also strengthen our Emerald Seas allies -- dangle the possibility of rituals to appease the Crone as an incentive to support the efforts, and subsequently use them to soften her touch on our allies' lands, and thereby strengthen their economic position relative to those who aren't integrated into the diplomatic effort. (We'll need to be very careful, in multiple axes. Discovering the White Sky's patron diety is responsible for their climate change could be grounds for a military attack, and weakening parts of the Emerald Seas could create openings for attack from the Cloud Tribes & Shishigui.)

"There are two main groups here from my experience. There are the nobles whose lands line the main road which currently ends in the ruins of Black Lotus Pass and agricultural goods, and those whose lands are further into the hills and produce the valleys metals and finished goods
The White Sky care little for metals and value wood highly, in terms of trade. Possibly they'll also place a high value on the agricultural luxury products the main road nobles can provide, who might be interested in the White Sky's high-quality metal products.

With the entrenched metalsmiths groups, we might be able to head off potential opposition from those who wouldn't like the competition, and leverage the Emerald Seas' existing metalsmith expertise for knowledge of how to best exploit the White Sky's metal exports.

Trade seems like the most natural choice in terms of trying to find supporters I think?

otoh, I guess the counterargument is that they'll be most inclined to support us regardless, and we might be better off trying to shore up the ones less naturally inclined...

otohoh, we don't actually have that support base yet, so we probably shouldn't jump the gun there.

Strong foundations are important after all.

Thinking about it some more, if we plan to handle bulk wood/metal trading, we really want to have an actual road to handle that, so the choice with "New Road" in it is probably the right move unless it comes at a truly awful political cost.

The logistics of Ice trading are going to be a bitch, so we should probably focus on making that easier. Making political connections with our future trade partners this early is a bonus on top of that.

Okay so. Everyone that knows me knows how much I love this quest. I am completely caught up, I have never missed an update, I spent really life money to commission art just off the strength of my love and a desire to help this character grow stronger and achieve her dreams. I say all that to say this.

I have no fucking idea what is even going on with this quest anymore. The system makes no sense to me anymore. The last one was needlessly confusing, and I had points left over that Yrs seemingly refused to apply. The reason I stopped commissioning art was because I had no idea how to help and it seemed like I was being stopped from doing so in order to facilitate some weird notion that we were getting too strong too fast.

But now, everything drags on slowly, and for far too long, we are not getting stronger, just more specialized since while we learn new arts we end up pushing them together into one big art anyway.

What are we, the voters even doing anymore? Like the math cabals were a meme but they were fun to watch and engage with. The fan base seems smaller than ever. How are the omake writers being motivated? They used to churn our images like hotcakes and literally like four have been done in the last month. Like, where is this quest even headed?

I love this quest but I feel like this, whatever it is is not the path forward.

The usual traders have the most incentive to oppose us as well, because a new trade route impacts the profitability of all other trade routes, as supply and demand shifts and rebalance. Some will make a temporary loss, and not everyone cares about the big picture

Think of it as heading off potential enemies, rather than courting new allies.

So one of the problems that Destiny has always had, since update one, is that while Yrs does a good job at building a system, we do a better job at breaking them. This is why we've had so many system resets, and every time there is a system reset how omake points interact with the system needs to be changed. The problem with the last system, the one we just left, is that only at very situational times was spending omake points ever beneficial.

We were overshooting the goals so much that there were no tipping points were omake points would make a difference. They had a small effect and only a certain number could be spent at a single time. Combined it made omake points largely meaningless.

In the new system I don't know what to spend omake points on. That doesn't bother me though because it's the same boat as the last system. I have heard some rumbling that omake points could be used to increase our odds of passing dice rolls, but I am not sure if that will work out given the huge pool of omake points we have would make us almost auto pass any roll and that would remove a large amount of the tension and choice making that dice events bring. So I don't have an answer to your question about omake points. They be largely useless, just like the last system.

Onto what the players are doing in the new quest, what the goal of players in this new system. To me, personally, the new system is about more personal, moment to moment choices than the last system. The last system seemed to be about building a plan and than the execution was mostly automated. In the new system it almost seems as if the cultivation is largely automated, and instead we are choosing how to execute that. We the players choose what aspect of cultivation we want to focus on, and then make choices to further refine those choices.

Outside of cultivation we appear to be given choices reflecting on political goals. We the players have to choose what options are the best leverage for meeting those political goals. Personally it has been a thrilling time for me navigating the different desires of the nobles surrounding us to get what we want.

Finally onto the size of the fanbase. That is much harder to determine. But, Yrs patron is going strong and the last two votes have had 78 and 98, both of which seem healthy. Currently I think it would be hard to say that player engagement has dropped by a large amount from the new system change.

Overall I also have frustrations with the omake system, but I think the switch to a more ground level system for voting is going to give us more chances to see the world that Yrs has built and how Ling Qi interacts with it than the previous top down system.
