Ling Qi leaned back against the rough cliffside with a sigh, closing her eyes against the rays of the evening sun.

"And you call me over dramatic," Sixiang chuckled. "It's not that bad."

"Maybe, but it's frustrating," Ling Qi muttered. She had underestimated the change fully breaking through into the Fourth Step, the Threshold of Green Realm and Bronze Physique would cause. She should have known better, given that she had received lectures to that effect.

The sun glinted off the portly elder's faintly metallic flesh, causing little flashes of light to reflect off the stream that ran round the lecturer's isle. "All of you have begun to approach the mid point of the Third Realm. To get here you have spent much time studying your arts gleaning insights, and have no doubt undergone at least one trial which has tested you to your core. I'm sure you each have your own tales of adventure and derring-do to tell. All the while you have built the base power of your dantian. From stones, from the world, from battle, whatever your cultivation art has demanded, you have drunk it in."

Elder Yongrui stood in the center of the grove where the class took place, his fingers laced together, resting on his belly. "This is good, it shows that you have both the patience and the ambition to endure the long, slow grind which characterizes such a large part of the path of cultivation," the Elder chuckled, his wide smile not wavering even as the disciples failed to laugh. "Hah, I'm afraid that never goes away, children. It takes time to accumulate power even for the most talented. But as you achieve the Threshold, you will find that merely accumulating more power in its raw form is not enough. Already you need to seek understanding to shape that power in the insights that arise from your arts and tribulations, but that too is not enough!"

"To rise further, you will need understanding, to study the concepts which underlie our world, or all the power you gather will simply leak away like wine from a holed barrel. Many of the tools and medicines which aided your advance will fade in usefulness, and even in the realm of Arts you will find yourself forced to slow down and deeply contemplate their lessons, rather than simply rushing through their practical exercises."

The pleasantly smiling Elder glanced around. "With that in mind, please take out the jade slips I have distributed. Interpretation of the lessons encoded at the Threshold stage and above require a different mindset to interpret, and the focus of this lesson will be instilling that in each of you."


"Yet you're still miffed that half of the cultivation sites you know don't work for you anymore," Sixiang huffed in amusement.

"Just a bit," Ling Qi said irritably. "It's the arts too though you know? It feels like I had a blindfold on, and now I can actually see."

Studying the jade slips and tablets she owned showed that there was so much more to learn than she had thought. It humbled her a bit. Some proud part of her had always wondered if it would really take more than a couple years to finish the third realm. Now… Well she didn't intend to be left behind, but her expectations had been tempered.

Ling Qi sat up and opened her eyes, looking out over the little ruin, with only the crumbling foundations and its single standing cherry tree. Here was the place where the three moons, or their avatars at least had come to her, nearly a year ago now, to take her forth on a quest to study her own past.

It was here that she had decided was the best venue to start her own real explorations.

"Done moping around?" Sixiang asked, looking up from where they were crouched over the three rings of bronze and jade which made up the ancient scrying device and gate she had pulled from the dead Hui's rotting storage ring. They were placed carefully among the browning grass, to line up with the faint lines of energy in the area.

"I wasn't moping," Ling Qi grunted. "We needed to wait for the rings to charge. How's your manifestation holding up anyway?"

"Easy peasy," Sixiang said with a smirk, puffing out their slim chest. Sixiang had chosen to look a little more masculine today, keeping their hair shorter and their features sharper. "Told you that thing would be useful."

Ling Qi hummed, glancing toward the golden idol which they had placed in the centerpoint between the rings. It did seem to make the rings power up faster, as well as easing the effort it took for Sixiang to manifest. She hadn't really had a chance to study why yet though. She was a little interested in how the talismans worked.

"Well," Ling Qi sighed. "I can work out my new cultivation schedule later. For now, let's see what we can do with this."

"Onward to adventure," Sixiang drawled, tracing their finger around the rim of the closest ring, it spat luminous sparks, and the air inside wavered.


When choosing your cultivation for the turn you may select a number of projects indicated at the top of the planning the section to try and acquire in the turn. To complete a project you need Successes equal to the number in parenthesis. (0/3) requires three Successes for example.

You receive one success just for choosing the project, Cultivation traits, sites and medicines can give you additional successes, as can your cultivation art. All bonuses will be listed at the top of the choice menu. Completing an arts project will often give successes to concepts making it often more efficient to complete them. Successes are referred to as steps as well, something I'll be taking care of as I comb through for standardization of terms.

It may seem easy then to end up 'overflowing' the requirements in certain projects due to stacked bonuses, and it is. If you can overflow a project by twice its required XP, it adds an additional success to each concept the project advances on completion. There is no benefit for overflowing further however.

In addition to permanent bonuses, Sites and Medicines can be used to boost projects. Each Project can have one site Assigned to it, and each site may only be assigned to one project. Medicines, when introduced, will apply to the whole plan, but you will only be able to apply one.

Ling QI also has an assignable cultivation trait which may be applied to one project for a bonus each turn.

The way that Kindle the Hearth works is not very impressive, but it also doesn't reflect Zhengui's approach to Renewal, as far as I can see. Look at his exploding technique. It can activate when he's been beaten down a lot, then he does the giant blast and has his armor and health restored while he passes out. On a conceptual level, Zhengui doesn't sacrifice anything. Renewal is transformative, yes, but it's also strongly additive. Kindle the Hearth trades security and staying power for temporary reprieve, which is kind of unimpressive.

But I'm also just really hesitant to commit to big thematic twists when we're already committed to a WHR alteration project with Zhengui. Without actually knowing what the art looks like philosophically now, I'm uninterested in tweaking it. It's a blind choice.

Well, considering what we're doing at the moment, I really want to take the Dreaming Gala. Otherwise, I'm happy with most of them, I think, so I'll see what other people think before deciding what else want.

Alright, so before we start planning out our cultivation projects, I think we have to first figure out: Where do we want Ling Qi to go, in terms of both character and cultivation? What concepts do we think are most important to advance?

We also need to resolve the Heart Demon - if anyone has any guesses as to what kind of lesson we need for that, and what concepts it might fall under, hearing those would be nice.
 
So I wonder if the Home concept is related to having a specific place to call home, where as Community covers the relationship of a family. Which is why Xiangmen and WHR deal with Home, since they're related to actual places where people live, as opposed to the nature of family.

Ok, so baseline plan I'd suggest would take Hidden Smile for tournament prep (need to get our social defense up!) and it bounces well of Hanyi's concert which is also a social event. Then I would take Echoing Grandeur because I think it's tackling Heart Demon related stuff vis a vis Power and Community, as well as expanding LQ's ideas on power and her music. Its description also has the best fit to a deep Dream dive imo - "From whence does that power come, flooding in from the Dream? What does even the applause and adulation of mere figments raise the potency of your music so?". We have to finish all projects anyway to master an art, and this feels like the best time to do this specific project. Gala and Phastasmal Mastery feel more grounded, and more separate events.

The question is then what we should take in the final slot. Lots of options here. We could go with even more social, but that might lack shiny appeal. SSC Dreaming or Hidden could also maybe be solid picks?

Getting some BKSD progress seems very popular too though, and BIG TREE could be a solid pick there going into the tournament. It's very thematic on the whole "great stand of ES coming together" stuff, which is relevant to the politics here, and also BIG TREE is cool :V. We do still need to keep an eye on war prep afterall.

Alternatively, Laughing Wind would open up LFWT for us, and could be some nice fun downtime for Ling Qi?

Potential progress after bonuses on all our arts as far as I can tell. Want to add temporary bonuses (Argent domain, sites) to bring things up to either 6 or 10 depending on the project.

I really like how it feels like you justified the mechanical changes in the narrative by focusing on the shift Ling Qi faces at the Threshhold stage. I thought it was a clever manner of intertwining the narrative and the meta mechanics.

Hmm, Grinning actually fits pretty solidly with the Dream adventure too, yeah. That's a solid full moon plan.

... also amusingly still no point in adding sites to SSC, because yrs isn't letting us get triples yet :p
 
Expand on this? I am still wrapping my head around the new system.
SSC gets 8 progress baseline with our permanent bonuses. The projects require 3, which means we're currently doubling them and will get double concept progress. If we added, say, silent stones then that would put us up to 9/3, which would be triple, but yrs currently isn't giving us any benefit for going beyond double.
 
I'd like to work on Song Seekers Ceremony. I think improving it should be a priority since upgrading it should make any cultivation we do in the future easier. I also want to do something to work on the heart demon though I'm not sure what.

There's still that whole war business going on, with much better cultivators getting shrecked, and much of LQ's profit came from being tough.

That and I miss Argent Mirror as a narrative device.
