Formations do not seem to work via arts however, so using that comparison is basically empty. Instead from what the state of the Empire's comm system shows, it indicates that there are paths of specialization where you basically have to make a thesis, or several and then progress off of that. General level formations use, reading formations, and formations breaking is something we have invested in, but it is the root of our skill in the subject.
Patterning off our allies might work, but I doubt we will be able to use the stuff they build on their own. I.e we'll have to help them develop it. Which like, has merit for some things, but we should be choosy about how we spend our time.
As in you're missing the point.
If we need to set up a simple foe detection ward, we could use a Perception art, use a preset talisman or some elementary formations.
The first is too expensive. Tends to be the best on peers.
The second runs into talismans not being always readily available or customizable. Working on peers makes them cost more, in favors, cash or friend time commitment.
The third takes a small continuous time investment to maintain proficiency, can be deployed and customized on demand, but won't stand up to a peer(but is good at watching some ass of nowhere cheap). Most useful for solving stupid esoteric puzzles that wants an element you don't main.
