The Long Founding (Warhammer 40k)

No offence, but that's only a problem for people who want heavy mechanized Chapter, like you. For Inedible we will pick planets with this tag, and so, The Chapter will probably get traits from those planets that will make them good at fighting against Tyranids. So being strongly mechanized just isn't needed, unless you just want strongly mechanized Chapter for this request.
I mean, if you want to put in the minimum on any of these requests, it's surely possible. Relying on the RNG to give us anti tyrannid traits might even work.

But why do that when we could do that and show up to fight their endless hordes with enough weight of metal to do it properly?

Against orks and chaos, a mechanized force just means better loot for them if they win.
Eldar are hard to pin down with a tank column.
But against endless hordes of Tyrannids I don't think there's a better counter.

Edit:
Also, I don't think anyone has ever said anything along the lines of "a strongly mechanized chapter is a bad thing to aim for" so I don't see why changing the rules to make it impossible would be an improvement.

- [X] The Shamed: As things stands there is nothing to do with Marines who have fallen out of favor with their Chapter, nor those who have committed crimes steep enough to bring dishonor, yet not severe enough to warrant death…. Of course, the only thing even remotely fitting to monitor these wayward Marines would be other Marines.
-[X] Traitor Legion Geneseed: If you wish, you could gain access to the gene-seed of the Traitor Legions. Each will have its benefits and costs, but all of them will have their gene-fathers concealed for practical reasons - little point creating a Chapter only for them to be wiped out by some overly paranoid fool. Write in a traitor legion. 10 Points for each time this is taken.

- [X] Potent Gene-Seed Charge: Some samples of a chapter's gene-seed are more likely to retain their stronger traits, and you have isolated such samples. 5 Points for each charge. Burn a charge to make the chapter roll for two traits from their parent legion.
-[X] Adaptive Gene-Seed:Some samples of Gene-seed are more capable of adapting to different conditions on different planets. 5 Points each charge. Burn a charge to roll an extra planetary trait. 2x
-[x] Legendary Gene-Seed: The finest Gene-Seed ever recovered from a given Legion. 15 Points per charge, Burn a Charge to add a Legion's legendary traits to the roll list for that round.
-[X] More Equipment: You've managed to secure extra equipment for a Chapter. 5 Points. Burn 1 charge to add an extra equipment slot for the Chapter. 2x
- [X] Extra Trainers: With some extra effort and yelling at a few more bureaucrats, you ought to be able to arrange things so the new Chapter is able to get in some extra specialized training before proper deployment. 5 Points. Burn 1 charge to get an extra training option.

  • [X] Plan: Preparations and some savings.
-[X] Testing, Testing: The Forge World of Murphius is one of the greatest producers of bolter weapons and rounds outside of Mars itself. They are also constantly switching between the many different patterns of bolters that they have 'discovered' in their obsessive quest to discover the ultimate incarnation of bolt weapon technology. They want a Chapter to test some of their... newer rediscoveries. You wish you could be unconnected to these idiots some days, you really do.

    - [X] Cauter Blade: A specialized vibro blade of intense cutting power, which the Techpriest showing it to you theorizes was probably made for usage against regenerating creatures by the Ancients. When the Cauter Blade is active, the middle of the blade becomes superheated to the point that both sides of the wounds it creates are separately cauterized, keeping the wound from healing properly and making it far more difficult to reattach or regenerate lost limbs. It does, of course, come with the caveat that enemies struck with it face no fear of bleeding out whatsoever.

-[X] Latch Boots: A superior counterpart to the regular mag-boots in Power Armour, these fascinating devices gives the Chapter's armor the ability to 'stick' itself onto any surface at will - letting the Astartes of the chapter fight on vertical surfaces, or even while upside down. 10 Points.

-[X] Bird Hunting: Too late, apparently - now a third group of Inquisitors want a Chapter specialized in fighting the Changer of Ways….. Which is going to be utterly infuriating given the very nature of that particular pain in your backside. Bah.

Done, they were clearly becoming 'always take' options to start with. Both extra training and equipement have had a price raise to 15.
So whilst this probably is a good thing to prevent certain issues, I feel like this 'as-is' may be a bit too extreme. Is it possible to either start bundling some of the training options so each individual pick is still themed but covers more (an example being combining Politics with Law), or perhaps instead have a 'free' automated pick from Training and Equipment along with our standard Pick for Training and Pick for Equipment plus any Picks we purchase?

Basically the idea being that we end up with any Picks that we naturally get from the Goal, plus whatever we get from the Planet and Geneseed Traits, and then you look at that lot and toss in something you think works well with the build? Though I can see how you might want to avoid that due to the... issues which might arise so that method might want to be altered.

Hot take: get rid of the regular equipment options. IMO they don't really add anything to the chapters identity or at least not to the extent the training options do.

... if the options and unlocks disappear, at least I won't have to look at them and see what could have been anymore.

I'd find that preferable to just making it mechanically infeasible to mechanize the chapter.

It'd be easier to move on if the mechanization idea was properly shot in the head than merely crippled by collateral damage.

Yeah I don't like adding point limits a raising The trading costs so much. It feels like it limits us in how we can make a chapter if they all have to cost 60 points or less

I think it is basically stopping us from mid-maxing the points gain. Basically forcing us to play smarter.
I am also willing to lower it again perhaps to 10 instead of 15..... as well as possibly add purchasable charges for some of the more 'basic' equipment options so if you want to go tank heavy you could by a charge of say predators and than take predators again during the equipment vote.

Or if we want to make things a little more complex, now that the Imperium is fracturing a bit it could be time to split the points in to support points from each faction. With equipment being mechanicus points, training costing space marine osupport points and politics costing high lord points

Edit: i have enjoyed Reading this alot so far BTW.

Amazing idea but the very idea of making things more complex on a 5 quest and 3-4 story backlog gives me dread.
I'd say maybe do a random discount deal where the base cost for options are 15 or something higher, but every turn a particular faction is on the rise and provides a discount to bring down a couple of them to 5...though that'd probably just make the players stock up on different charges like doomsday preppers, nevermind.

(Unless you make it so that they have to spend the charges right away and ban hoarding...?)

Honestly, restrictions on how resources are used like that are probably bad for quest design. It just feels bad, better to make it feel good, no? Perhaps times when spending them *now* gives a benefit of some kind. Even if the benefit is entirely narrative.

For equipment being taken all the time, honestly, it kinda just makes sense to me. Equipment is very important for an Astartes chapter. The thread always taking it isn't so bad in my eyes, since it isn't just "equipment" it's different kinds of equipment. Tanks, ships, guns, swords, troop transport, air vehicles, etc. I'm not seeing why it's necessary to restrict using it.

Like, maybe you want to make it more significant/consequential? If that's true then you could amp up what equipment does while you make it more expensive. In a way that makes it influence the chapter more so it's more important? That way it's not a nerf, it just makes the option "weighter."

Right now I've settled on raising the price to 10 and seeing how that impacts things.

I've also considered letting players get charges of some of the base equipment options like Predators or Rhinos… inherently less flexible than the general option and probably going to have a similar price but if you really want a chapter to have vehicle or a metric ton of Assault Marines for some reason it'd be the way to go.

I suppose one of the nice things about this being set in the 40K universe is that it's relatively simple to explain price changes.

"What do you mean I have to pay more for extra rhinos?"
"Well Lord Grimm, it turns out we lost the knowledge of how to make the axels for the tracks and we have to figure out how to get around that. Good news though! Someone found an STC for a new model of Power Swords, so you should be able to equip an entire chapter with them! Better hurry before someone 'loses it', eh."
"I hate this Galaxy."
