Oh, btw, I an currently writing the update+end of plan vote+Interlude, and, purely out of curiosity; what would be the most blursed family tree Jungmin could have?

Just as a hypothetical, of course.
"She's my mother. She's my sister. She's my cousin. She's my mother, my sister, and my cousin."

No, wait, that's just cursed. Also probably impossible? Gonna need to make a flowchart for this. Probably not possible with first cousins?

I've played enough Rimworld to know that that is possible. (Animals only until today, though we'll get a DLC that adds (human) children to the Warcrime Simulator tomorrow!)
Yeah, I think I've verified it checks out.

For an arbitrary 'he':
He's got a grandfather and a paternal grandmother, who had his father, who then had a daughter-sister with his own mother ('he's maternal great grandmother), who he then had a daughter-granddaughter-niece with, who he then had 'he' with, making the relationship between them, uhhh... 'son, grandson, grandnephew', I think?

There might be some terms I'm missing here, but honestly I'm done with this line of logic now. I can't even begin to calculate the consanguinity of this shit.

Magellan, Khan, Saladin, Ching Shih and Zheng Zhilong / Zheng Chenggong as distant ancestors?

Is that the sort of listing you're looking for?

Honestly considering what Jungmin's dad got up to I suspect a combination of scoundrels and idealists in equal measure. :p

Mai is a bit more of a blank book, we really don't know much about her background.

We're somehow related to blackbeard? Could be funny at least.

1807, China: Ching Shih acquires a fleet of 200 pirate ships. After three years of absurdly successful piracy (among other things, implementing some reforms and increasing her fleet size ninefold), a Chinese government (there were multiple) provides an offer to go legit with complete amnesty and no demands of recompense. She accepts and lives a life of ease before dying many years later, old and surrounded by family.

Considering the location of Guangchou... I wouldn't put it out of the line of possibility that it used to be a bit of a pirate haven at times. So this could make a ton of sense. Also it would be funnier if this was Mai's ancestor, at least in my opinion.

I love it.

This is what it should be.

Late to the family tree, but for extra confusion we should be not-so-distantly related to Edwina Booth (not the actor, the daughter of Edwin Booth, brother of John Wilkes Booth [yes, that Booth]). I only say this because Edwin Booth is an interesting historical figure to me. He saved Lincoln's son from being hit by a train, some guy he had never met tried and failed to shoot him for a supposed slight against one of his friend, and as an added bonus there is a drawing of him on his Wikipedia page where he looks uncannily like someone I know.

[X] Commiewood: Universal War

This is a mecha show. No. Strike that. This is THE mecha show. It's not the most well-animated. Nor the best acted. Nor the most competently written. But it is the mecha show that came out from Guangchou at the same time as they unveiled real Mecha to the world, so it is the most well-known because everyone was watching it out of curiosity.

It follows an anti-imperial struggle by a group of rebels on a distant planet (it's basically a synthesis of many South American anti-US conflicts in a sci-fi setting) with low gravity, a thin atmosphere, and rugged terrain borne of the world's geological youth. In this environment, the most prominent weapon of war is the Universal Soldier - a bipedal mechanical humanoid used ubiquitously in the military and select civilian applications.

A lot of fucked up Japanese and American mecha designs can trace their roots to this anime because the Guangchou Army extensively consulted on how these Mecha should be depicted, and the references and advice they gave the animators and show-runners were all for engineering dead ends and horrible solutions that had been discovered during the ITs development process.

[X] Commiewood: Universal War
Many say that the Universal War has laid the foundations for how Mecha are depicted within the media, particularly within fictional stories revolving around their use outside history or on earth. A few even go so far as to suggest that Universal War had an outsized influence on how Mecha would be developed within the real world due to being the only place where designers could get an idea on how these things could slot into the military, ideas which were bolstered by the show being made by the nation that had developed these machines.

Few understand that this show single-handedly wasted billions in research budgets for the Japanese and American Militaries, with only the European efforts being spared due to the initial aversion to adopting these machines because of the buy-in costs associated with all new technologies and the possibility of another, immediately available, military counterpart capable of independent multiplication.

Though by no means a dedicated effort to undermine or mislead the research efforts of the western world, the show had still been created with that idea in mind, seeking to nudge the mindset of people from sensible and proven designs after boondoggles and moonshots to increase the time Guangchou and Commieterm Engineers and Scientists had to push the technologies used further along to maturity and develop the needed expertise required for the massive deployments the Mecha would soon see within the Eastern World.

However, what the makers of the show failed to account for was that, once the people sent onto dead-ends realized they were treading water without result, those same people suddenly found themselves in ownership of research worth billions about nearly every facet of the construction, operation, maintenance, and more of Mecha. Something which would lead to the development of-[End of Free Trial, Purchase Article to continued reading.]

Hundreds of houses are built all over Guangchou, rural villages collected into these structures where applicable, services and quality of life vastly improved by the immediate availability of these small-scale villages unto themselves, with a general increase in both security from attached police and decrease of unsanitary living conditions as people are moved from wood and mud houses into concrete, steel, and glass constructions filled with the wonders of electrical appliances. And, thanks to the continuous program of LSEEHs Construction, several dozen faults were eliminated within these last sets of construction, with maintenance scheduled to remove them from those already built. At the same time, cost reduction efforts have paid off as the price of further modular construction projects could be slashed across the board due to improved manufacturing principles and methods. As a result, the cityscapes of Guangchou have changed dramatically within these last few years, and with only a little more effort, you could ensure that dream of yours that has grown ever closer: Full Housing For All.

It was a hot and humid day when you stood at the beginning of the first line, photographed with several union leaders of the factories currently in either construction or pegged to supply the required materials. Still, it was worth the slight discomfort caused by the temperature to smooth over your (over-ambitious) Plan hiccups and seem as if, yes, the Dragon Rail would be built, and it would be made within this lifetime. Even so, the work has only begun, and there are years ahead to complete it yet.

The time for secrecy was over. You were going to be revealing the people's efforts over the last decade to the world in total, showing them all what it meant when the might of the workers was unshackled from capital and petty restraints and let free to make dreams a mundane reality and mundane reality artifacts of centuries past. The factory was built with the best of the best you had available, machinery used to automate what was there, CyberSyn already in place, trained workers ready to start production, and a robust logistical line eager to feed the forges of Guangchous ascension to the world as the premier creator of electronics. All that was needed was the beginning of the parade...

It took time, favors, and, weirdly enough, a lot of late-night dinners with representatives and farmers. Like...a lot lot. You are pretty sure you'd have gained weight if you hadn't increased your training regime to account for that. However, in the end, it wasn't a matter of if the FC would gain enough internal coherency and political power to become an outright power in its own right, but when. You merely ensured that they knew where this boon came from. After all, one hand washes the other, and you had several projects for them in mind...

Screaming.

That was your first impulse.

Murder.

That was your second.

Calm.

That was the last, and the one that made you cut a bloody swath through the SB, cleaning the house and separating those who made deliberate efforts to lie to you, those who were pressured into doing so, and the few that had tried to inform higher-ups but were ignored or silenced in non-lethal ways.

Ultimately, the SB was cleaned of placed sycophants, incompetents, and boot-lickers of the worst sort.

And all that remained was to look at something that horrified you.

Weapons were dispatched, equipment and instructions too, alongside canned foods and common medicines, all intended to reach some potential allies you were trying to court and support. "MotherF-" you try to swear as you look up from the papers in your hands, barely reigning yourself in as you remember your kids were currently asleep, strangling the indignant cry in its crib within your throat. That, however, didn't mean that Mai hadn't noticed and, with a raised eyebrow as she looked up from her book, moved to shush you. "You were right," you quickly mumble before she can do that, definitely not pouting as you lean back from the mess of papers in front of you.

Said mess represented the massive amount of research you did as the sudden urge to find out your family's histories struck you, one part the need for medical information so you can cut off or reduce any genetic diseases in your children, another simple curiosity, and the rest pure boredom.

During that binge on heritage and family trees, you discovered that, though you have no direct connection with him, a senator in the US Senate was a distant relative of yours, alongside several people in Taiwan (who are capitalists to the bone), Egypt (an artist currently in prison for trying to paint the pyramids pink), and Germany, with the latter being in jail due to crimes committed in the 40s. Tax evasion, to be precise. Somehow, the fact that your side of the family was made up of capitalists, politicians, and tax evaders was made even worse because Mai's claim about her being a direct descendant of pirate royalty was true. And the most notorious one to boot, who turned Guangchou into a pirate haven and nearly made her own nation with over 1.500 vessels under her command.

"Well," she said cheekily as you didn't pout because that would be childish, "now we both know where I got my love for plunderin' booty!"

You tried your hardest not to laugh at that, giving her an unamused look.

She laughed even harder.

"And what are you calling them?" You idly asked as you looked over Mai's massive spread of documents and ideas regarding a new youth organization she was putting together.

"Youth Scouts," she distractedly replied, scribbling down another version of their uniforms.

"...I failed you," you whispered silently, a single tear running down your cheek as you realized she was serious in calling them merely 'Youth Scouts.' You couldn't even make a proper seven-letter acronym out of that!

The Worker's Plan for Eliminating Homelessness and Ensuring the Security and Prosperity of the Glorious People of Guangchou Through Technological Supremacy has been fulfilled* (*by technicality), and your skills have grown, as have those of the nation.

Choose a Boon:
[] Efficient Administrator

During the last five years of work, Jungmin has learned much about the national bureaucracy, how to work and apply it, what works and what doesn't, and how to improve certain areas for more responsive and flexible action.
(Gain more leeway before Overwork Maluses are applied.)

[] Professionals To The Fore!
This last Plan has seen many professionals and experts drafted into various projects. There, they were given precedence and positions of leadership, able to fully apply their skills wherever needed, shaping and advancing the interests of science, communism, and industry further than they could before.
(Gain a +1 to all Actions. This is a stackable plan-completion bonus.)

[] We Who Live And Cry And Love...
A thousand and one stories have been told, and a thousand and one stories are still waiting to be written, read, and celebrated.
(The Bonuses from Omakes are increased.)

[] A Marching Revolution Unending
The Social Revolution cannot sit still, nor can Guangchou, for the world turns ever onward toward the future and prosperity and ruin.
(Upgrade/Gain a Nation Trait (Options Below))
[ ] Words Win Wars
A new school of geopolitical thought has emerged within Guangchou's state apparatus that emphasizes social progressiveness and economic development coupled with a strong propaganda arm to combat capitalism without resorting to physical confrontation. These will undermine trust in capitalism and drive wedges between the ruling classes and the workers in western nations while minimizing the risk of nuclear Armageddon and supporting the social revolutions in communist countries where it's stalled out. Or so the theory goes.
(New Faction - Third Wave Revolutionaries, opens up massive amounts of Internationalist Subversive Actions, allowing you to influence and turn countries to the communist ideology and sphere far easier.)

[ ] Red-Black Reconciliation
Since Wei Cai adopted the Leninist position and turned on his Anarchist allies to solidify his power, Guangchou's anarchists have been hiding and forming a significant source of domestic unrest. Under Jungmin's regime, however, the purges and witch hunts have stopped, and while an official recognition of anarchism as an allied ideology is unlikely given the geopolitical considerations of having to appeal to the PRC and USSR, the decriminalization of anarchism and the institution of a Don't Ask Don't Tell policy means that anarchists have been quietly started coming back into the fold.
(Anarchism Returns!)

[ ] IT Mania
While the populace at large remains ignorant of computing technology, the potential for the technology has been filtering through the military-research-industrial complex. Cybernetics, computing, and telecommunication systems are the hot new thing predicted to solve everything from logistical issues to battlefield communication. Unfortunately, most of it is pure hype based on an inaccurate understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the technology. Still, the Jeune Ecole that forms the technology's most ardent supporters is a valuable source of political capital for pushing through innovation in the field in the face of intransigence from conservative elements.
(Actions which drive Technological Progress/Advancement of Electronics, Cybernetics, Prosthetics/Implants, Robotics, Automatization, etc., will have a far more profound impact and rate of advancement, alongside broad popular support.)

[ ] Sanctuary For All
While no official efforts have been made in immigration, word of mouth has been spreading about Gunagchou's tolerant culture and improving economic situation. Though there's a bit of exaggeration involved (especially on the economic front), immigration to Guangchou is slowly becoming an essential part of underground LGBT+ movements, with an underground railroad organically forming. So far, only a trickle of international migrants have arrived on our shores, but dedicating state resources towards reforming our immigration policy is likely to release a great deal of pent-up demand.
(Boosts immigration and international actions due to ex-pats consulting, opens up new espionage options, slowly destabilizes less socially progressive nations due to growing internal unrest.)

[ ] Land of Ideals
Many outside the country may call Wei foolish for his idealism, but the people? They have started to see. There is a belief in Guangchou that a better world is out there waiting if they dare to grasp the tools to make it happen. Perhaps they'll never reach their ideal goal, but they don't have to create a perfect world overnight.
(Less Impact of Sub-Optimal Actions and damaging scandals/events.)

[ ] Nation of Tinkerers
Thanks in part to the boom of innovation and industry sparked by Wei's rule, a latent bit of Guanchou's culture has been pushed to the forefront. A propensity for tinkering with and improving things, coming up with exciting solutions, and a tendency to rapidly adopt and implement new modifications to something they use in their daily lives. In other words, now that the situation has improved and more people are starting to have the means to do so, people are beginning to invent new things and improve the tech they use passively.
(People-Driven Technological Innovation becomes a part of Guangchou culture, with a slight chance to achieve a breakthrough without any Actions spent each turn.)

[ ] Operation Diamond Pony
Building onto the successes of Operation Rainbow Road, we can improve our intelligence efforts and the recruitment of promising scientists being denied their chance to shine on the stage of academia as they improve humanities knowledge and understanding of the universe and the world, alongside how to manipulate the same for the betterment of all peoples.
(Maluses/Increased Difficulty for creating/researching advanced/amibitious technologies is reduced by 4 across the board once, and 1 permanently.)

Concerning. I have the feeling that once the US and Japan get out of their "Insane mecha that don't work" phase, we're going to be dealing with "Insane mecha that work exactly as advertised if not better."

As for the boons, I'm thinking either [] Efficient Administrator or [] Professionals To The Fore! The former would get us extra actions per turn so we can panic fix our healthcare system without cutting as much focus from the rest of our projects. The latter is a flat bonus that is worth more the earlier we take it, currently with our 12 actions it would be applying +12 per turn spread across all the actions, with 2 turns per year over 5 years per plan coming out to a total of +120 over each 5 year plan.

In the East the... 'temporary shortcomings' of the Soviet government are generating a steady stream of disgruntled scientists and engineers and it would be to both the USSR's and Guangchou's benefit if they ended up in Guangchou (where their efforts will still benefit the USSR due to our close scientific ties) instead of defecting to the USA. Likewise in the West, America is doubling down on it's worst impulses, making many question their loyalties. Teaming up with native sympathizers to create an underground railroad through Canada and Cuba, with the aid of KGB and one or two soviet submarines is challenging, but well worth the payoff.
