If the prototype option had a long-term affect in starship technology or development, I would be rooting for it. However, it appears from QM statements that it would not be so- we are just getting a component for this ship and it is still available next ship without pushing the technology.

So, we should go long-term and go with the +8 to industry. Which adds +1.6 industry per year since it is not being used. So, it really is a +16 Industry for the next 5 years- and then remains on.

@Sayle
If I may make a suggestion for the next investment: perhaps both should be choices that can have a permeant affect? So, perhaps an addition to industry and/or a bonus to prototype rolls? Or have technology development actually be able to push forward technology permanently?

I have been bribed convinced, lets get Iowa Shipyards, and allow for even greater industrial capacity.

What ended up convincing me is the fact we will probably have at least one more ship before the NX-Class (Enterprise), and so we will have the coils for them anyway. Plus, I think the next ship should be a science/survey one, and they do not really need the best warp coils, even if it would be nice.

I think buying the technology does have a permanent effect, it advances our warp drive technology by a few years - if we kept doing prototypes it would add up. That said, for now so we can afford more later:

According to Sayle, that's not actually true.
But no, you can't push a specific line of techs to get notably better in that than you "should" be for the era.
I personally would have almost always voted for the tech option if it was, but since we can't go super wild with it, we should take advanced technology sparingly. That way with the increased industry we have, we can start rolling out multiple ship classes or bigger production runs of one type.

Some inquiries suggest that an up-and-coming company called Yoyodyne is making some interesting steps in warp coil technology that could benefit from having an extra injection of funds.

"Temporal Agents log Star Date [Redacted]

The opening of Yoyodyne Propulsions has gone off without any noticeable hiccups. We are still investigating how several members of the SBD from across various points in the the time line were able to coordinate their operation but the last member has been secu--"

*Beep Boop*

"Compute pause recording. This is Agent [Redacted] what is the situation? I thought we were standing down the [Redacted] What?! Again!! This is the third time SDB has attempted this for crying out loud! I'm on my way!"

Then what's the point of the option?
You get to use that technology on the very next class you design instead of the one after. So if we knew we are going to make a capital ship next, then we could choose to advance shield technology or something so that it can be on the capital. Otherwise industry is almost always going to be the better choice.

Not being able to stack prototype tech development makes me think this choice is obvious. One gives a temporary boost for 1-2 ships after, the other gives a permanent boost from then on out with compound interest. (Because if I understood correctly despite the claims otherwise it is compound interest, just it only compounds in 5-year chunks)
