Springtime of Nations II: A European Republic Quest

[X] We insist on Lithuania
I think I was under the misunderstanding that the negotiations would give us more power than they actually do. I don't necessarily want a slugfest but at the very least I am not giving up on an entirely red Hungary, Croatia, etc. So a resumption of war it is.

[] We insist on Lithuania

I would like to vote on this only for the sole purpose to bring back Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth…of course as a Republican state, definitely not a bi-confederal monarchy :3

Nationalism is getting popular in a lot of places by now so why would they agree to be together again, also feels like they polish would be once again be a senior partner then equal partners?

Poland-Lithuania reunion is unlikely, I'll grant you that, especially since Polish radicalism is more Gold than Federationist (Orange?). But on the matter of ethnonationalism - Bohemia did just vote to join us, and IMO it's not unlikely for Slovenia to opt to join us too. I wouldn't rule out pan-national ideas like Yugoslavism or plurinational concepts while Balkan Socialist Federation either. Moreover, the National Personal Autonomy (NPA) has some support in Croatia-Slavonia & Hungary, tho much more so in Austria, Bohemia, & Slovenia.

Who knows, the NPA could be something relevant in particularly multicultural regions like Belarus, Crimea, the rest of the Balkans, etc

[X] We accept the counter-offer.

This is an incredible deal for Germany. Lithuania is of no concern and gaining Galicia as well will allow us to establish a Ukrainian state that we can begin creating Ukrainian nationalism. In this timeline there is likely no codified Ukrainian language or major Ukrainian language universities not dominated by Russia. This would provide much leverage against the Russians in the future. Part of the rationale for the Bolsheviks in promoting Ukrainian national identity so heavily in Soviet Ukraine was to seek to promote pro-Soviet feeling in Galicia to eventually detach it from Poland, Transcarpathia from Czechoslovakia, and many border territories most notably Chernivtsi from Romania. This was called the Piedmont Principle in Bolshevik party circles. A reverse Piedmont principle would be very interesting.

News of the World: 1898-1899

In early 1898, and in response to initial Allied victories over the Russian Empire, a group of Russian emigres living in Munich officially form the Russian Socialist Workers' Party and begin organizing the smuggling of translated socialist literature across the front lines, as well as officially-approved distribution to Russian POWs. They apply to and are accepted by the International Revolutionary Alliance as a member-party.

A major pro-republican demonstration is held in Beijing to protest the Qing Empire's continued autocratic structure. In response, the Guangxu Emperor announces an ambitious slate of democratic and meritocratic reforms, laying out a blueprint for a "constitutional empire." Subsequently, conservatives execute a palace coup, arresting the reformist emperor and his ministers. German-trained soldiers stage a counter-coup and reclaim control of Beijing, but by the time they retake the palace the imperial court has already fled the city with the captive monarch.

The Qing imperial government secures foreign backing from the Entente by making a number of territorial and economic concessions and begins raising forces in loyalist areas, while the modernized Chinese Army mobilizes against them "in the name of the Emperor and the Constitution," setting up an elected government in Beijing and securing much popular support in the process. The Chinese Civil War has begun.

An armed attempt by the majority-white Republican Party of North Carolina to seize control of the state government is put down by force when the Populist governor escapes their attempted ambush and orders the mobilization of the state national guard. The subsequent bloody battle on the streets of Wilmington sees the armed wing of the Southern Republicans decimated and the survivors arrested. President McKinley, fearful of a potential backlash, declines to get involved.

The Philippine Republic hosts a second constitutional convention following the collapse of its first liberal government in the face of widespread public opposition. The new constitution is radical-socialist in nature and forcibly unseats the cleric-landowner alliance that had previously dominated the former Spanish colony. A reactionary uprising attempts to reverse the convention's outcome by force, but is dispersed and seized by the Filipino Army.

Japan ceases to extend extraterritoriality privileges to Western nations and closes down the consular courts in its country.

With the outbreak of the Great Eastern War and Chinese Civil War, the pro-independence Korean rebels find themselves unable to receive much of their foreign support, even as Britain and Portugal begin committing troops to their suppression. Rather than give in, they retreat across the poorly-patrolled Yalu River into Manchuria, where they rally the local Korean population and begin a new campaign on behalf of the pro-reform Chinese military government.

Having won a victory of sorts in Korea, the Imperial French government announces that the protectorate will be reorganized along international lines, granting access to and sharing responsibility with its Entente partners for the colonial exploitation of the peninsula.

The anti-Semitic Dreyfus Affair in France seemingly reaches a conclusion when Captain Alfred Dreyfus is finally pardoned by the French government, though not fully exonerated. The Affair has seen a major leftist backlash against the conservative ruling government, culminating in the election of the Second Empire's first openly social-democratic prime minister. It has also seen an exodus of French Jews, many of whom have moved to Germany, preferring a friendly nation at war to a hostile one at peace.

The Second Boer War breaks out between Britain and the Boer Republics of South Africa over British immigration into the Boer states. The British colonial army suffers numerous reverses and has many of its settlements under siege by the end of 1899, but has also begun to deploy numerous reinforcements along the coast.

The Ottoman Empire begins soliciting foreign bids for the construction of a railway between Constantinople and Baghdad.

A major cholera outbreak that began in India spreads across Asia, North Africa, and Europe. While the Allied republics' modern sanitation measures have begun to be copied by their neighbors, they are insufficient even in Germany, where several hundred people die.

Chinese civil war sounds like a great reason to peace out and start sending supplies and newly veteran advisors over to China.

Inshallah a good sign for the IRA & Allies' prep for the future Allied-Entente War

HOLY SHIT

We gotta gun-run for them hard, a mixed factor is Imperial Japan likely gonna help too since the Qing is backed by the Entente

Godspeed to the brave republicans of Korea 🫡

RED-GOLD PHILIPPINES!

...uh their potential membership in the Alliance is gonna be an issue for the US' GOP but likely not the social-radical APP.

Hopefully that means some breathing room for a few years, tho France is still a colonial state despite its pink current administration and the Emperor is quite influential

The Ottoman Empire begins soliciting foreign bids for the construction of a railway between Constantinople and Baghdad.
Hey, the money could help our own rebuilding efforts - and we could spread some social-and-radical ideas on the side.

A major cholera outbreak that began in India spreads across Asia, North Africa, and Europe. While the Allied republics' modern sanitation measures have begun to be copied by their neighbors, they are insufficient even in Germany, where several hundred people die.
Oh that's bad, international health crisis. We could also send medical & logistical aid for their relief - but likely limited by our own need to rebuild and recover from the Great Eastern War.

Edit:
An armed attempt by the majority-white Republican Party of North Carolina to seize control of the state government is put down by force when the Populist governor escapes their attempted ambush and orders the mobilization of the state national guard
Oh wow, shit is already degrading between the GOP and APP. We could influence the way US' sways more I think (and perhaps reverse their potential reapproachment with UK)
