Springtime of Nations II: A European Republic Quest

God, Romania and Bulgaria are so fucking stupid. What kinds of motherfuckers look at us slaughtering our way through every enough in what is nonetheless a terrible bloodbath and go, "Sounds good."

It's not unrealistic, Italy did it in WW1, but man is it so fucking stupid, and it's not as if they can even contribute massive amounts. Bulgaria's total population in 1900 was 3.7 million, so they're probably just adding another army unless they want to bleed their country white.

The Balkans on fire! Romania has joined forces with the Imperial League likely in exchange for Transylvania. Serbia and Greece are itching to attack the Imperial League.

Can we land a knockout blow on the Habsburgs this turn?

[] Plan: Winter Resting
-[] Accept.
-[] Reallocate troops toward the Polish front.
-[] Initiate an offensive toward Konigsberg (Gold).
-[] Deploy the Allied fleet to contest the eastern Baltic Sea.
-[] Ask the Allies to threaten the Dalmatian coast.

Only using 2 milmov actions due to limited shells. Threatening Dalmatia with boats might distract Austria from the Serbian-Greek offensive. Even with the info about Serbia/Greece not actually wanting to be friends, it's still a toe in the door and another front to stretch the imps.

I doubt Romania are joining in exchange for Transylvania, I think they're joining because they know they're next.

By no means a criticism, but I should note that the Balkan offensive won't kick off until Spring 1899.

[] Case Adler
-[] Decline.
-[] Initiate an offensive toward Kiev (Red).
-[] Initiate an offensive toward Zagreb (Purple).
-[] Maintain the Baltic blockade.
-[] Ask the Allies to threaten the Dalmatian coast.

So, the war expands.
  • The Balkan countries aren't really going to change much beyond the League having more meat to throw into the grinder. It's actually kinda a good thing, in that our future victory will be much more complete.
  • Romania entering the war is bad. Austria's supply issues go out the window now, since they can just send riverboats up the Danube en masse.
  • Greece seems like a somewhat useful ally, and their territorial demands are likely fairly sensible. They presumably want that strip of coast from Bulgaria, and maybe (modern day) Macedonia. It'd open up another front on the League, although we don't exactly need that right now; it's not like we're stalling out.
  • Serbia is a fucking mess. For one, this is what Greater Serbia looks like:

They're also, per Etran, a conservative constitutional monarchy. I don't feel great about them growing larger on our border. Most improtantly, though, Serbia is completely surrounded by Albania, Montenegro, A-H, and Bulgaria. They have no coastline via which we can support them. They're likely assuming that Italy will put enough support into Greece that the Greeks will break through Macedonia via the Vardar river vally. However, that's very mountainous terrain; getting through/around the Rila-Rhodope Massif might be a repeat of the attempts to break through the Alps IMO.
  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but A-H's elite troops were used as a rear guard during FJ's evacuation, and thus should be manning the defensive lines there. Meanwhile, Russia's weak. Hitting Konigsberg seems fairly appealing to me in order to give us a slightly better front from which to attack Minsk in the summer.
  • Given our lack of shells, I think we should only take one offensive this year.
As such, I'm thinking:

[] Plan: A
-[] Decline.
-[] Reallocate troops toward the Polish front.
-[] Initiate an offensive toward Konigsberg (Gold).
-[] Deploy the Allied fleet to contest the eastern Baltic Sea.
-[] Ask the Allies to threaten the Dalmatian coast.

[] Plan: B
-[] Decline.
-[] Strengthen defensive positions in Poland.
-[] Initiate an offensive toward Zagreb (Purple).
-[] Deploy the Allied fleet to contest the eastern Baltic Sea.
-[] Ask the Allies to threaten the Dalmatian coast.

the Danube runs through serbia
Serbia is a fucking mess. For one, this is what Greater Serbia looks like:
Depends on the scope of the victory and where things lay at the conclusion of hostilities, but Greece wants Bulgaria's part of Thrace and Serbia wants Vojvodina as their minimum requirements.

So something like this for minimum Greco-Serbian Demands

@Etranger how large of a problem is us not having a large stockpile of shells anymore? For the war effort

-[] Ask the Allies to maintain the situation in the Mediterranean.

I'm categorically against advancing the nationalist land grabs of monarchies. If the Greeks and Serbs want to be their friends they can do political transformations.

It's kinda tempting to say accept then let them d i e but I think we'll need non abysmal relations with their people in the future even if their governments can perish.

I'm also thinking we should just aim everythign at Russia because they just failed an offensive against us, and my biggest gripes against peacing out now were based on not having all the parts of Russia I'd like to exit the war with.

Bringing Greece and Serbia into the war as an act of realpolitik seems pretty solid to me, at least at first glance. I doubt Bulgaria's gonna be a friend of ours in the next war, and it might be beneficial to let a couple friendlier minor powers rip pieces off while we're beating up the big empires. I certainly don't see us having the steam to do any damage to either of the League's Balkan members ourselves before the war concludes. And the alternative is likely a couple of army groups of actual troops defending Budapest, which would definitely sting.

Also, yeah, the Danube runs right through the heart of Belgrade in between Romania/Bulgaria and Budapest, I don't think they're gonna be running war supplies on the river even if Serbia stays out of the war.

Hmm, something like this...

[] Plan: Konigsberg Get
-[] Accept.
-[] Initiate an offensive toward Konigsberg (Gold).
-[] Deploy the Allied fleet to contest the eastern Baltic Sea.
-[] Ask the Allies to maintain the situation in the Mediterranean.

@Etranger , does doing only one offensive action provide any bonuses?

Yes, as mentioned in the planning post.

the Danube runs through serbia

It limits your artillery support to what can be supplied direct from the factories rather than from stockpiles, so it reduces the scope of the bombardments you can do.

@Etranger would the Kyivan advance bypass or go through Romania now that they're in the war.

The front with Romania is very narrow so it probably wouldn't focus much in that direction at first.

Exceedingly nice of the League to give us a free hand in the Balkans, an excellent event.

I don't think letting in Serbia and Greece is that helpful. Aside from the political considerations (which are significant), they're small countries, which do not have Alliance standard militaries, so they'll be much less useful than our forces. They'll also be taking 800,000 Italians from our main line to go fight in Macedonia, rough terrain that Greece will be limited in how well they can support them. And this mainly will distract the Bulgarian and maybe Romanian armies. Which I suspect won't be that useful to the League's main line due to coordination issues, especially the Romanians.

For our actions, I think now is the perfect time to take Konigsberg. I also think an offensive to Zagreb makes sense. The Austrians are desperate working on a defensive line to hold us, and Zagreb seems to be the weak link in it. If we let it go without taking it for longer, it will be further built up and possibly a harder target.

I'm also fine with this plan though, Russia is in a weak position and putting as much pressure on them as possible is good as well.
