As much as he claims to be a wizard, he's not actually an apprenticed or trained wizard/alchemist. He's missing a lot of the basics and fundamentals that would be necessary to do that.

Arcane Sight is actually helping him to learn more about spell forms and structures than the various spells or magical skills he's picked up. Given some time to watch actual magicians (Kaldur, Giovanni, and Aquaman come to mind) manipulate and tweak their magic and he could start to do more than just fill magic into a spell structure and let it go.
Hell, at the moment the only spell he can actually modulate is Create/Destroy Water because it's got power controls built into it, and the skills Transmutation and Conver
So it would be more accurate to say that Alchemist is a spellcaster trying to become a wizard. I'll have to reread the story soon, because for some reason I thought there was the implication that the skills came with more knowledge than you say.

got an idea for Nabu, no small part of which comes down to the fact that his depiction in Young Justice doesn't make sense!

You'll see more when I actually get to it, but to offer a teaser to the idea:
The scales are imbalanced for far too long a time if we go by the YJ timeline. Something else must be at play, but the question is what?
I've always veiwed Nabu (without a Host) as basically viewing things and acting like Primus D&D God of Mechanus or any of its Denizens.
This is why he needs a Host because a being of PURE ORDER would not care about Good or Evil it would only care about if it was Lawful. The Host is for giving him a mortal veiw point. Nabu without a Host would side with Darkseid like how Primus sided with Asmodius in his trials.

Side note: hope you don't mind these idea? If you don't they hope they inspire something @Mister Ficser
Though it brought the thought i wonder if Nabu knows Primus (probably looks up to him as a Great Elder if he does)

if the stuff with Nabu starts going down hill somehow before Alchemist can step in (Nabu no longer really trusting the heroes Word). I would think it would be cool since Alchemist uses D&D spells if he summons an Inevitable (Kolyarut) to over see his Oath/ Deal with Nabu for him to know that Alchemist is serious about any deals made (knowing that if anyside breaks the Oath the will not escape).

Though a another cool idea is if Alchemist says that he will swear the Oath/Deal under Primus (if Nabu knows about his Senpai he would know that breaking that Oath is something not even Gaia could get him out of)

I don't mind at all!

Might use them for flavor, if/when the time comes! Nabu is functionally an Archon cranked up to eleven (Which is saying something, if you've played Wrath of the Righteous) and dealing with them is always difficult.

Especially so for Alchemist, seeing as he's functionally on the side of Chaos. Not great or evil, like Klarion or Child, but it's still something that will impact things.

Yeah so and knowing how Alchemist likes prep and knows that he is going to need a backer that Nabu would respect to get him to the Table with him

i imagine he would get either Shazam (though getting him to leave the ROCK or getting Nabu to it would be the hard part) the easiest and least risky to contact but also the one most likely to say No

Alchemist is knowledgeable enough to know that Primus would be someone that Nabu would have the Greatest respect for (if he knows him which i see no reason he wouldn't with one of his fellows(Kismet) is Lovers with Eternity (Marvel) though they where forced to break up. The most dangerous to contact for even Alchemist but gets the most respect if he could even get his attention and survive it.

Etc..

But if Alchemist is going to be an OUTSIDER (a very tiny one) might as well use the knowledge of beings that are higher in the ORDER of things to his advantage.

So it would be more accurate to say that Alchemist is a spellcaster trying to become a wizard. I'll have to reread the story soon, because for some reason I thought there was the implication that the skills came with more knowledge than you say.

An extremely apt description.

He's reasonably aware of a large number of spells that already exist, as well as tools, weapons and armor.

So far though, he's barely aware of how to make anything of his own. The only unique thing he's made has been the Darksteel Heart. A sealed urn of darksteel that's been having raw magic pushed into it. Incredibly inefficient and slow, it's based loosely on principles he half-understands and otherwise guesses at. If it weren't made of materials that are indestructible by fiat, it would've already failed.

Everything else, he's picking up manuals, guides, books and scrolls. Great at learning things and combining disparate concepts, he's happily standing on the shoulders of giants to see as much as he does.

A multitude of his ideas have fallen flat, however, and he has at times failed outright. His initial plans to make a more 'mundane' homonculus didn't work out due to material requirements. Attempting to find a skill to boost his MP failed outright due to his own lack of knowledge or expertise. The Dark Knight class guide in his inventory will continue to be a lovely little decoration rather than anything useful because, while he has the magical knowledge to cast spells, he doesn't have the background or knack to understand using a blade to channel and shape magic.

A recent example is the spell he picked up called 'Bow Spirit'. His plan for it failed, so he has to settle for using it exactly as described. Another was Awaken, where he tried to ask the animals if they'd like to be proper party members, though in this case the spell worked as intended and it was the cats who all said no.

Hey would the various skill books in Fallout 3, NV, and 4 do anything special of bought? For example if Alchemist bought a "Big Book of Science" and fully read it would he gain anything beyond whatever was written? So maybe a skill of something

"Alright. Alchemist. You need to explain this!"

"Well, you guys seem deadset against me using real guns, so I made a less lethal one!"

"Try again, but with some more explanation this time."

"Oh, uh, alright? So uh, this thingy here excites a neutral pion decay reaction and then it travels down the thingamabob here. That, uh, distributes it pretty unevenly, so it's got this focus dish on the back! And it points it all forward so I'm not irradiating myself! Then it-"

"Just... Please, just stop. Alchemist, you can't make a gun that shoots radiation at people!"

"Oh, come on! Nobody complained when Tesla made his peace ray!"

"Alchemist, it causes cancer."

"Okay. And? I can cure cancer. Nobody was complaining when Lex Luthor got super testicular cancer from that pocketful of kryptonite he kept around!"

"You gave Kid Flash cancer."

"He's a ginger, he only counts for half."

"He has super ass cancer, Alchemist.'

"Now he knows better than to do half-assed puns!"

"For the love of all things holy, just leave mad science alone!"

"Big Book of Science"

BUNKER:
If Alchemist is serious about making a safe house, constructing bunkers* are explicitly listed under [Craft (Structural)] in D20 Modern. The skill can be level-grinded by assembling IKEA furniture/bookshelves or doing handyman projects like plumbing, painting, drywall, laying cement, and building cabinets.

*Constructing a bunker is DC 15, building a house is DC 20.

Couldn't hurt to also purchase [Knowledge (Architecture and Engineering)] from classic DND.

Link: d20 Resources - Skills - Structural

Link: https://www.limey.net/~magnum/DL/D20 Modern/d20 Modern - Core Rulebook.pdf

TRAPMAKING:
Alchemist can level-grind [Craft (trapmaking)] by leaving booby-traps throughout the Mount Justice base, insisting his teammates need better situational awareness and should know how to disarm traps.

The best part is that Batman would agree with a few booby-traps so long as they don't inflict too much damage.

Alchemist: :D "Constant vigilance!!!"

EXCAVATION:
Maybe [Profession (Miner)] like a goblin or kobold so he can dig side-tunnels in mine shafts?

Level-grind [Profession (Miner)] by manually digging tunnels in Mount Justice.

Why do you seem to think those are different things?

Because a proper programmer can actually read the code they're lifting, know what it does, and splice it together so most of the time it'll (eventually) work. :p

Also, I was going to go with a redneck doing something stupid and an engineer getting creative, but spells are more software than hardware.

_________________________________________________________________________

Yesterday had been a good day.

A great day!

Penny was pleased as punch over what they accomplished!

They proved Captain Atom's innocence to the world, beat up a ninja and beat the bad guy!

Not... That she was actually too happy about that last part. He'd been shooting at them and... Some of the bullets had bounced, err, ricocheted and...

She'd never actually seen someone die before. It... It wasn't like in the movies. It wasn't clean or, or peaceful.

There were a few other things nagging in the back of her mind, though she wasn't quite sure what.

Regardless, she was walking into the base today with her head held high and pep in her step!

She said hi to Robin, hugged Megan and waved to the other heroes on her way through the base.

After being brushed off yesterday, she was going to tell Alchemist all of the cool things they did. So maybe next time, he'd join them too!

Right after she figured out what he was doing.

He and Kid Flash were both doing something with a door upstairs. Alchemist was holding that weird door he'd been working on lately in place in a doorway, and Kid Flash was doing something with the hinges.

He done something with the door though, now it was covered in all kinds of pretty, but sharp symbols and it kind of looked like cursive, if it had been carved in straight angles.

And the colors... It was kind of pretty... And also really tacky.

"What are you two doing?" He'd been working on that door for a little while, so it must be something important.

"Punching a hole in reality." Alchemist fired back immediately.

Penny, unsure what to make of that, turned to Kid Flash.

"Yeah, that pretty much sums it up." The speedster responded after a moment of thought.

"O...kay? Can I watch?" Neither responded in the negative, so she took that as a good sign. Only a few moments later, the door was hanging from the hinges and Alchemist was looking at the writing inside the circle, comparing it to the papers he pulled out of his inventory.

"Alright. Both of you step back about... Four, maybe five meters. If I messed this up, the event-horizon shouldn't extend past that." At the word event-horizon, Kid Flash grabbed her by the wrist and physically dragged her down the hallway. "You guys good?"

Kid Flash sent him a thumbs up, but Penny was distracted.

There, in the middle of the door. There was writing there.

She couldn't quite see it, her eyes kept sliding off. Maybe if she just focused a little harder?

...A? A... @**&@%$#%?

~~ Warning! Attempting to view blocked information may result in SAN damage! ~~

SAN damage? She didn't even have a SAN stat!

Still... That didn't sound good.

"Alright. Feeding magic into it now. If the door collapses into itself, start running away!" Alchemist put his hand over the painful words and she could -feel- the magic bleeding into the air.

It felt... About like the number seven, and it tasted like Oranges. Sour and tangy, but still sweet. Refreshing?

And then he opened the door, and she saw sunlight on the other side.

"Alright! Come on and take a look!" Alchemist stepped on in, leaving the door open behind him.

She looked to Kid Flash, who was looking back at her before he shrugged and followed the other boy into the doorway. She was only a step behind.

It was... Weird. That's the only way she could describe it. Through the doorway, they were standing on an island floating in Space! The ground underfoot was dark, rich earth and she could see the edges around her.

Though when she tried to lean over the edge, she felt an invisible wall smack her right in the nose.

"Sorry about that, safety feature." Alchemist was just turning in a slow circle, a wide smile on his face.

Not a grin, or a smirk, or one of his little asshole I-know-something-you-don't-know ones. Just, a genuine smile.

It kind of made her feel bad about what she'd been planning earlier. She knew he didn't take to the heroing thing like they did.

"This is so cool!" Kid Flash finally managed to find his words. "And you can make one of these for me?!"

"Absolutely! One limitation though." Kid Flash didn't even seem upset that there was a caveat to his request. "You have to use the door from the ritual to go in and out, and if something happens to it you'll lose access to whatever you're storing until it's either fixed or I can make a duplicate."

"Still! This is so cool! You created a space! I can't even think of any metahumans who can do this off the top of my head! Do you know how many people out there have a private reality like this?!" He was just so excited, it was kind of infectious.

"At least three." Alchemist muttered, looking down at the fertile soil underfoot. He pulled a large bag of seeds out of his inventory and began tossing handfuls around. "Kent Nelson, me and you when I get it made."

Well, cool as this was, it was kind of small. Maybe about three meters squared? Penny couldn't really think of a whole lot that could be done with this.

"Is it safe to go back?" She finally asked when Alchemist started doing weird stuff, like sticking a finger into the dirt.

"Absolutely. Time should flow at a normal pace, so you should be good." Time? Why was he worried about time?!

She chose to just leave instead of asking more questions. It'd be faster to figure it out herself, anyway.

-----

Jinx followed along behind Black Canary into the base.

Again.

Not that she thought the hidden mountain base was lame or anything, the place was totally rad! But she could really, really do without being watched the entire time she was here.

And she still couldn't figure out what Dinah's problem was with Alchemist.

All she wanted to do yesterday was ask if he could teach her that repair spell he used in the laundromat in Gotham.

Her power had been acting up. Not her grey skin or pink cats eyes powers.
Her bad luck powers.

It kept popping up now and she didn't know why, but it kept causing things to jam and break. Like her hair dryer. Or the cell phone Dinah literally bought for her three days ago.

She'd thought maybe it was evening out while she'd been living on the streets, or maybe she was somehow getting it under control.

But nope! Just her luck, things start looking up just to fall back down!

Her hair dryer, her phone, Dinah was asking her if she'd like to get a chihuahua now too! If she'd wanted a rat, she would have gotten one in Gotham.

Probably be better behaved, too.

Watching Dinah pull Superboy and Power Girl to the side towards a training room, she finally saw her chance!

Well, more like she just didn't go upstairs with the rest of the group. She actually wanted to explore, see if she couldn't find that Waterfall room that Alchemist claimed was hidden somewhere around here.

She was about to walk into the rec room when she heard a certain gravelly voice.

"-and Superman wanted to make sure this got back to you. Giovanni was hoping you could provide a sample for him to experiment with." She poked her head through the doorway, and there was Batman handing a-

He was handing Alchemist an arm!

"...Sorry, but I'm going to have to call this one a trade secret. Not that I don't trust him, which I don't seeing as he's never introduced himself, but I'd prefer this not end up in some cultitst's hands." Alchemist rolled the arm over in his hands a few times. "Really wasn't expecting to get it back, to be honest. I went ahead and made a replacement, y'know."

"So what are your plans for... that?" Batman pointed at the hand. Skeletal and bare.

Jinx was still hung up on the whole part where he made it.

Alchemist tilted his head to the left, then the right for a moment before poking his hand at something invisible in the air in front of him. After a moment he was holding a large, mesmerizingly green marble roughly the size of a jawbreaker.

The good kind.

He wrapped the fingers of the skeletal claw around it and then moved his hand down, encasing the ulna and radius in a tall black staff made of some kind of metal.

"I think I'll call it the 'Second Hand of Time'. 'Cuz that's an orb of solid time magic, get it?" Alchemist waved his new staff around a time or two before settling it against the counter.

It was subtle, but Jinx could see Batman sigh even from the doorway. He stood up and began walking towards the door.

"Everyone's a critic..." Alchemist audibly, intentionally muttered from where he sat.

Batman nodded to Jinx as he passed her, a small grin tugging at his lips.

Looking back into the room, Alchemist was still seated, though he'd pulled his new staff across his lap and was facing away from the door. He was doing that thing again where he was poking at nothing, muttering to himself. Though this time it was too quiet to be intentional.

A cheshire wide grin spread across her lips as she got an idea. A terribly wonderful, awful idea.

She slowly crept across the room, finally noticing the green girl with red hair was sitting on the couch further into the room. Watching her.

Jinx held a finger up to her lips, the universal 'Shh' signal, before pulling her hands back.

"What'cha doing?!" She giggle-shrieked, playfully grabbing Alchemist's shoulders from behind.

He jumped, his hands jerking down-

And she found herself standing on a rotting pier, the sound of waves crashing against rock and birds shrieking in the distance.

And Alchemist dropping to the pier on his butt.

"What the? What just-" Her question was cut off by two things.

Alchemist literally chanting the word 'Shit' over and over again.

And a blond woman, standing just past the edge of the pier, where wood met stone. A terribly confused look on her face, but she pushed forward none the less to say-

"I ask of you- is that the fate you've chosen, of your own will?"

-----

Tracy, Leslie, Alchemist... He wasn't really sure what name to go by at this point.

Not that it really mattered much. He also had a fourth name to add to the list, courtesy of Johnny 'Rocketfingers' McGee, the middleman he worked with in Gotham.

...He was going to stick with Alchemist, at this point. None of the others really meant much to him beyond Leslie, and even that one wasn't really his.

He'd had a busy morning so far. Buying enough groceries to last a month, finalizing the demi-plane seed...

Once it was completed, he'd inventoried the door. He didn't necessarily need it now, but if he were somehow silenced or some other status debuff prevented him from casting magic he would have to use it.

Kid Flash had some fun with it, before he put it away. Taking pictures of the endless stars in the demiplane sky, close enough to provide about as much light as the sun but still visibly far, far away. He'd probably had the most fun taking pictures of the doorframe, one half was the base and the other half showing off the demiplane.

Now? Now he was sitting in the rec room, looking at his perks.

M'gann was on the couch behind him, reading a book.

He was making plans to go to a dangerous Instant Quest, and he wanted to be as prepared as he could reasonably be.

Cramped hallways, densely packed monsters, ghosts and spellcasters and dragons... He needed to buff up his resistances before he even thought of going there.

So he was buying up the elemental perks.

They were all quotes from songs, which was kind of awesome.

~~Man of Fire: This is the meltdown of your desire!~~
~~Fire based damage and effects +50%, Fire Damage Resistance +25%~~

~~Warrior of Darkness: I will fight and I will stand!~~
~~Dark and Negative damage and effects +50%, Dark and Negative Damage Resistance +25%~~

~~Seeker of Light: Rise with me, Rise with me, Rise with me- RISE UP!~~
~~Light and Positive based damage and effects +50%, Light and Positive Damage Resistance +25%~~

~~Thunderstruck: Now turn thy gaze ahead and look to the morrow, Lightning shall strike, Thunder shall roll on!~~
~~Electric and Sonic based damage and effects +50%, Electric and Sonic Damage Resistance +25%~~

That should be everything he-

"Alchemist." Batman's voice broke him out of his thoughts. "I believe I have something that belongs to you."

The man was standing just out of Alchemist's reach, but he hadn't spoken until he was in the reincarnates field of view. Something Batman probably preferred other people do for him, too. With how often the Dark Knight had been ambushed, his reflexes were probably on a hair trigger all the time.

"I... Don't think I've left anything lying around recently?" A quick check with his hand and he felt the darksteel container still attached to his belt. He knew the holmcross body was still in his inventory.

He made it a point to keep his guns sealed up when he wasn't using them, so that shouldn't be it either.

"I was told you dropped this, and Superman wanted to make sure this got back to you. Giovanni was hoping you could provide a sample for him to experiment with." Bruce held out a steel hand bereft of flesh or tissue.

Alchemist didn't flinch or hesitate when he reached out to grab it, recognizing it immediately.

He'd forgotten about it, half expecting Superman to set it down somewhere and forget about it himself. He'd given the man a lot to think about that night, after all.

Well... What was he going to do with it though? It's not like he really needed a second hand, at least, not a second right hand.

"...Sorry, but I'm going to have to call this one a trade secret. Not that I don't trust him, which I don't seeing as he's never introduced himself, but I'd prefer this not end up in some cultitst's hands." He rolled it over between his palms a few times, thinking.

Second hand...

He was sure Giovanni would say Shadowcrest was completely secure, and he also knew that was a bald faced lie. "Really wasn't expecting to get it back, to be honest. I went ahead and made a replacement, y'know."

"So what are your plans for... that?" Batman pointed at the hand. This time he wasn't growling, honestly curious for a change.

With half a thought he opened the shop menu, an idea forming. He had the spell for Haste already, but he didn't know if he had room for any other spells from Final Fantasy Two. He would've liked to have access to Slow and, more importantly, Stop.

The Time Materia set him back six-thousand GP, and would be relatively useless to him for the immediate future. If he leveled it up, though, he'd get both spells!

Significantly more limited than if he'd gotten the spelltomes for them, but such is life. Maybe later on he'd even see about getting the Added Effect materia too, but that one sent him to an Instant Quest to the 'Cave of the Gi'. A relatively low-level quest area, just irritating and full of angry ghosts and hungry spiders.

He closed the Living Steel hand around the materia and used Transmutation to fuse the various joints before pulling a failed Darksteel rod out of his inventory.

Getting the diameter right for the rod mill had taken a few tries...

That resisted transmutation, hard, but that just increased the cost. A few seconds later and he had the hand, grasping the Time materia and sticking straight up and out of a Darksteel rod that came up to about his hip.

"I think I'll call it the 'Second Hand of Time'. 'Cuz that's an orb of solid time magic, get it?" Or maybe just cut that down to 'Second Hand'? It did sound somewhat cool, but it was also redundant and something he'd expect out of a bad anime.

Rather than respond, Batman just groaned and started walking away.

"Everyone's a critic..." He grinned, but Batman didn't turn back around. Alchemist offered an abbreviated wave to his back before going to his own projects.

Bitterblack Island.

That was the name he'd been researching off and on since yesterday. It was... Well, it's basically what you'd get if the gates of Hell were left open. Monsters from myth, legends and nightmares roamed the narrow halls but it also offered no shortage of armor and weapons to whatever foolish soul chose to dive into its twisted depths.

And Alchemist was very interested in the armor.

Duffie had managed to bury a significant number of nails into him, even through protect being up. So he needed to look at a defense that was at least a bit more physical.

He'd looked through various options. Artifact armor from Final Fantasy XI involved individual quests per piece, and a good amount of that he wasn't sure he could actually do.

Yes, he cheated, but that game had such a stringent requirement for multiple players to accomplish things well that the developer eventually caved and created NPC's for players to use!

It was basically the same story with most of the other high-end gear from other games he could think of, single player or not.

Bitterblack Island wasn't significantly different, but it was different enough. A player could go in solo, provided they were smart about it, and accomplish everything by themselves without the use of assistant NPC's.

He was hovering over an item that could only be acquired by completing a quest on that island in-game, the Savior's Ring.

Garbage by most standards, it offered a bonus of five-hundred HP and stamina in Dragon's Dogma. The iteration created by his system was basically the same, except that it included five-hundred MP in place of the stamina. That might be a pretty big deal for him.

All he'd have to do is go to the island and find thirteen pieces of 'Rare' equipment in an order determined by the random number generator.

Said like that, it didn't sound too bad. Hopefully.

He hovered over the purchase selection, three point two million GP. More than he actually had. A lot more than he actually had.

But he still had both coupons Terra had sent him. He could do that. He could go in, use the massive amount of time he'd need to try and finish filling up the magic concentrator, finish making his Soul Stone.

He looked up at M'gann, but she was staring vacantly past him before looking down. Maybe he should initiate the quest outside? Maybe somewhere far enough away that M'gann wouldn't notice he'd suddenly changed when he got back?

"What'cha doing?!" Someone laughed in a high-pitched shriek right into his ear before he felt two hands grip onto his shoulders.

He flinched. Hard. Caught completely off guard. His body jerked and his hands twisted-

Right down onto the 'Complete Purchase' button he'd been debating over!

The transition happened in an instant, fitting considering the name, and he dropped down on his ass, his new staff banging against his elbows painfully.

He could smell the salt in the air first, before his brain finished catching up to what was going on. He only just barely caught the tail-end of the introduction line given by the NPC in charge of the zone.

"I ask of you- is that the fate you've chosen, of your own will?"

He stumbled to his feet, muttering the word "Shit!" over and over as he turned around. It was probably rude for him to ignore Olra, the little blonde woman who'd asked him that question but this was more important.

Jinx was standing there, hands outstretched still as though she was trying to grab something and her eyes opened wide in fright and confusion.

He wasn't sure what to say.

He wasn't even sure where to start!

Finally his brain settled on one thing. He opened his mouth and said, perhaps possibly the most succinct summary he could think of.

"Shit."

Uh-oh, Jinx needs a training montage ASAP if she wants to survive.

She couldn't quite see it, her eyes kept sliding off. Maybe if she just focused a little harder?

Never stare directly into a dimensional singularity!

fertile soil underfoot. He pulled a large bag of seeds out of his inventory and began tossing handfuls around.

Yay! Confirmation plants can be grown in the pocket dimension!

Get ready for eldritch vegetables like Elvis Parsley and literal ears-of-corn.

If people get upset about Jinx, ngl frick off. She's a traumatized young person who saw a chance for what she saw as a tiny joke with no repercussions. It isn't her fault that Alchemists' trigger discipline with his UI isn't as good as with his guns.

Well at least we're finally getting some POV from people who don't think bad shit about Alchemist for no reason at every opportunity.

Though we're still getting that. 'Figure it out on your own faster' good God why is every 'good' person such an ass? They literally have to just ask a question and they're all seemingly allergic.
