You know, I'm starting to get the feeling that Terra might not have a single god damn clue what she's doing as an administrator for Gamers. From a balance perspective, making it so higher leveled stuff has more significant requirements than getting enough shinies to pay for them makes sense, but not for the reason she gave. I haven't really felt like he actually had much trouble going wide with his abilities which seems to be what Terra intended for this update But, like, he's got good utility and just because he likes turning people into frogs doesn't mean he doesn't have a bunch of spells that are, together, effective against a pretty damn wide variety of foes. His problem is that he doesn't have any hard hitting abilities, which is what this update of Terra's makes A LOT harder.

I'm kinda feeling like I've gotta be missing something obvious, or is Terra just bad at this?

-Loling at the Men in Black reference. Poor M'gann.

-Someone should tell Terra that Insta Dungeons that lock you in until you succeed or die actively disincentivize taking risks or expanding one's skills.I would certainly think long and hard before risking any such thing.
It's high end items and skills that do that. Low and mid range stuff was unaffected.

The idea is instead of skipping those skills and jumping right to max power they have to get the weaker stuff and use those instead.

Speaking as someone with some firsthand knowledge of antidepressant, you dont really know what you are talking about.
At all. Doctors generally do not prescribe antidepressants on a whim, and certainly not to teenagers.

Alchemist is literally in the body of a teenager who committed suicide.
Im not going to indulge in armchair diagnoses, but I would not be surprised to find that brain chemistry problems played a part in Leslie's state of mind at the time.

So until Alchemist unlocks DnD Wish or Greater Restoration, or something similar from another school of magic, doing what the good psychiatrist recommended is the smart play.

A good observation. One thing to remember in DC, there's always someone around waiting to co-opt your magic and twist it.
Not to say that you can't do that with medication, but that tends to be more mundane.
Another benefit the medication has over magic. If something happens to Alchemist, Leslie would still be able to get a refill on his prescriptions.

BUT MAGIC!

Joking aside, I'm drawing many parallels to pre-suicide Leslie. There are differences but it feels similar.

You're not exactly wrong.
Unfortunately, Alchemist here is still operating on Leslie's brain. Treating that should make things better, but it's still a struggle where you're feeling things in a way that's alien to you.
Honestly, the bigger concern should really be that he's medicating the kid without the kids consent, but it runs into the issue of him, for right now, being the kid. Something of a moral quandary I'm not sure how to look at.

Exactly so. Her first message may have been joking a bit, but she's not far off the mark about gamers going directly for super-powered insta-win stuff.

Considering she's not allowed to use certain abilities or has them nerfed due to 'other' deities making it clear they won't tolerate her having them after 'incidents' such as the dragon shape shifting. I think she REALLY doesn't think things through.

The Gamer is basically reality TV for the outer gods.
Reality TV is never well thought out.

Someone else remembers Legend of Legaia? I thought I was the only one. Gonna need some environmental protection for that. Also some genesis trees.

Maybe it's the lack of sleep talking, but the way I read the new rules was that if they die in the instance they just get kicked out of the quest and sent back without their purchase and they have to buy another quest instance if they want to re-try.

Another benefit the medication has over magic. If something happens to Alchemist, Leslie would still be able to get a refill on his prescriptions.

Actually, with Wish and Greater Restoration the problem would be permanently fixed. Especially Greater Restoration, which doesn't have Wish's "DM Screwjob" issues.

Oh, also! Minors don't have the ability to consent or decline consent when it comes to medical treatment. That's entirely in the hands of an adult, typically the primary caregiver. Given Alchemist is Leslie right now, I'd say that's about as primary in terms of giving care as you can get.

That won't do anything. She's an idiot of the highest degree.

Please pick carefully. An Instant Quest will, as the name implies, occur instantly and can only be completed once. The Player will be teleported to an arena or dungeon and cannot escape through the use of I.D. escape until such time as the goal has been completed. Or the Gamer dies. Upon completion of the goals of an Instant Quest the Gamer will be returned to the same point in timespace to resume their experience.
We hope you have lots of fun!~~
So, if he dies inside, he doesn't die in real life?

That'd be something at least.
He did make two, non-video game related purchases though. A scroll of Shades and a scroll of Shadow Evocation. Oddly enough, Greater Shadow Evocation was missing. Both illusion spells, but they drew on, well, shadows and darkness to give the illusions substance. Shades would allow him to conjure nearly real monsters and elementals of all shapes and sizes, though the pinnacle of conjured beasts were beyond it. The evocation spell worked in a similar fashion, it could be used to imitate any and all evocation spells from the tier below it. Both relied upon belief to function at full power, but even against a foe that knew they were illusions they would still hold a significant fraction of their power.
Shades does way more than that tho. Conjuration is silly good, and beyond some very powerful monsters (with casting of their own!), you've got all sorts of things. Walls, blasts that bypass SR, demiplanes and much more!

Gotta love user feedback 'updates' that actively make the game worse. "look your game is bugged and literally damaging you because we didn't prepare this for deployment. Here is a discount in the cash shop a thing you had no issues with directly. Oh and to 'balance' the 'benefit' we are giving you, y'know the one we are supposedly giving you for handing you a system that physically attacks you every time you try to use any of the features we ripped out at random we are making all high tier items require a quest to even get. Keep in mind none of these are guaranteed to work or not attack you like before so really all we did was tweak the cash shop and quest lock a bunch of high tier items and btw if you fail the quest you lose the item and the cash you spent on it plus any other damage you took in the process.'

That isn't cute or funny that is the ROB Terra ignoring all of the problems that have occurred and just upping the difficulty at random. Honestly, the MC would be better tricking Terra into blocking him again. She isn't just unhelpful she is effectively an antagonist at this point. If this weren't a 'game' where the player has no choice but to play I imagine he would have quit at that point. Especially as Terra gave him nothing for the time she blocked herself and sent someone else to help unscrew that mistake. The text messages from that and the lack of any kind of apology or follow through on her promises is really grating. Terra is worse than Aqua at this point.

Don't get me wrong I enjoy this story greatly and like the MC I just needed to rant about how much I despise the ROB. It is engaging and the writing that made me hate her is the same writing that makes me look forward to the MC eventually delivering her a comeuppance. I didn't much care for the time reset but also understand it may have been necessary from a writing perspective. I do feel the MC is doing a good job of working around their limitations though I think they aren't doing much to ween themselves off of depending on Terra in the long run.

A psychic piece of living armor, it could probably help defend his brain from mind-readers. He had Mind Blank, but the only time he'd tried to use it had been kind of horrifying.

Because the psychic monster locking onto your brain, intertwined with your being, would be so much more reassuring.

Even if it completed the goal and succeeded in killing Ra's Al Ghul, which Leslie wouldn't be willing to bet someone else's money on,

Soul magic.
That's the way to go with Ra's.
Also good for Vandal Savage!

And he might have, also, definitely visited a few websites with very suspicious names that had a lot of pictures of a particular breed of cat.

This time around if she thinks about embarrassing him with his history, she'll get a face full of saggy, wrinkly, ugly Sphynx cat.
...okay, so. Let it be known, this drove me to try to see if it was possible to find a fitting webpage that fit the bill for this inbetween the massive minefield of porn such questionable query would cause.
I have to admit, gentlemen, that I completely and utterly failed to find my target.

Go to cat/dog lover forums (older is beter) you are bound to find adreses with intresting names in their arvhives

Also, don't metaphorically put words in someone's mouth because you have a personal problem with something. It's a strawman, at best, and definitely disrespectful.
I will concede that I am unqualified to make diagnoses(which I don't think I did since that is identifying an illness I only expressed my dislike for antidepressants, but I can get your meaning), but I did not put any words in his mouth. Look back at the comment that said that what I said was 'dangerous'. Also, a strawman argument is when someone doesn't address the real subject of the argument. That last sentence you are referring to was after my main argument, which means that it is not a strawman argument. In fact, all you did was try to discredit me by saying that I put words in his mouth and had a strawman argument and not actually address the argument...

I cannot stress this enough: you are grossly unqualified to make medical recommendations so don't.

And you are? Since you did not site any credentials I will assume you don't have any. If one person without credentials argues against them, while another without any credentials argues for them, I don't see how any side can actually be proven correct without actual proof. I actually bothered to google a few sources to confirm that my argument was not completely wrong. Just realized that the last sentence was a bit too confrontational for me but I don't know how to reword it without destroying the meaning. What I'm basically saying is that the reasons you are saying I'm wrong can also be said against you.

At all. Doctors generally do not prescribe antidepressants on a whim, and certainly not to teenagers.
This is DC. A superhero world that runs on narrative. Ignoring real life for a second, usually medications like this are portrayed in a very bad light in stories and cause problems for the characters. I admit that earlier I was arguing about real-life effects but I actually agree with your statement that doctors don't prescribe antidepressants on a whim. That is because they can be dangerous, which is what I was arguing about. Reading this I feel convinced that in real life Leslie's choice would be the correct one (if he had a good doctor), but in the story, considering how plotlines like this go and the fact that the original Leslie's doctor seemed a bit shady (can't really remember why I think that), I don't think that they are the right choice (or at least any better than a restoration-type spell). Basically, I concede to your argument because it makes sense if Leslie has a good doctor, which he probably does because he is associated with the Justice League and they all need good doctors.

I'm kind of tired of arguing this now that I realize a new chapter came out so that's all I really have to say.

kinda just want the MC to finish his new body already. Like, the entire thing with him getting Leslie his body back has kinda made the story and the MC's development feel like it is on-hold until he does.
Also because I am really wanting to see the MC start improving themselves more, but a lot of it is on-hold until he actually has his own body. Like, I want him to have more abilities. Chakra, Aura, more Magic, idk... but a lot of it he would have to wait for his new body, unless he wants to lose the abilities after he transfers.

God.

Legends of Legaia.

I aged 10 years in the span of 10 words.

But I'm guessing this is Legends of Legaia 1 given we're doing Seru's, and not the Stands from 2.

And oh hey. Shitty gods doing shitty work. I didn't know this Gamer run had the JRPG settings kit installed too.

Everyone is all like "Chakra! Kusanagi! Needs more rasengan!"
I imagine the Rasengan is instanced now I hope.
(3am rants let's go)
This 'update' really nerfs both the reason to do quests, because everything is cheaper people have less incentives to do quests, and the more passive builds that don't rely on combat, such as not being able to get Unlimited Farmworks or something because they didn't build to fight the crop scorching aliens or something.

It just transitions the power difference from the rich and the poor to the strong and the weak.

I'd say she'd find a lot in common with the character featured in this song.

Oh man, Wheatley? You're comparing her to Wheatley? That's just harsh. I saw the spoiler and thought it'd be Useless Aqua, but Wheatley feels extra insulting. Aqua's an immortal, overpowered, woman-child, sure, but watching Wheatley once he gets into GlaDOS's cradle was like watching a literal monkey get minor omnipotence.

Of course it had the JRPG kit installed. Super ultra-powerful best goddess Terra-tan showed up in chapter one looking like a magical girl.
It's all downhill when that happens.

So, if he dies inside, he doesn't die in real life?

Starting to think I should've saved Shades for the example chapter. Rather than a fight, it would've basically been a game of Guess Who against a nine-tailed fox.
Your goal? Find the real one amidst the countless fakes, copies and distractions.
The hint? What does the fox say.

While the story on the whole is a deconstruction of Gamer fics in general (at least that's what I'm getting from it), the whole store that just lets him buy any power or magic from any universe regardless of tacked on restrictions is kind of lame. Along with IDs, it's one of the worst aspects tagged on to the Gamer in fanfiction to me given the source material.

I know a lot of Gamer fics include it, but it just is a lousy addition to the power set in my opinion. It wasn't in the manwha, and while I understand it's trying to substitute the Abyss market, at least there, anyone in the Gamer's magical world could buy from it. Jihan didn't go through his own system menu to buy powers, he ordered them online via Magic Amazon and had them delivered as tomes and scrolls. It wasn't solely a "market" that only the Gamer could partake in. These were powers that existed in the setting, and others could possibly know as well, rather than it being unique abilities only he has.

You could honestly make a store that gives you powers from across fiction via money its own super-power fic rather than add it on to the Gamer itself. One that gives you powers you can level-up with the Gamer is just way too easy for things to get out of control, especially if you can just steal gold from an ID's Fort Knox.

I think I have seen that a few times. A gamer-lite story where the player's only options for advancement are purchasing things...
Yeah, I'd link it but it's NSFW, one of the recent ones by FlameclawsX over on fanfiction.net. It's not exactly what you were talking about, but it's in the same ballpark. Highschool DxD though.
His works not bad, but I do tend to read it for ideas on what not to do.

Without some means of acquiring esoteric or odd skills, I'd need to try and write the story as Alchemist and Player One developing them from scratch. Which admittedly could make for a fantastic story, building off of cantrips to understand how the weave of magic twists and teases reality to bring about your desires, and how to feed more magic into this particular bend, or barter with the spirits for contracts or learning.

That... Might be an especially tall order though, especially for fanfiction because it would require creating enough entirely new content that I may as well start writing my own books.

Because the psychic monster locking onto your brain, intertwined with your being, would be so much more reassuring.

Still better than Nabu.
