Chapter 22
Project: Gamer Ver. 2 Alpha Build 0.2.2

As a rule, Batman did not drink.

Bruce would, on occasion, enjoy whatever expensive alcohol was being served at an event. Under the light of the camera, competetion and vultures circling and watching every action and inaction, specific images had to be cultivated. Others had to be clipped at the stem before they could take root.

Tonight, Batman wanted to drink.

"-at which point we found a third hidden laboratory with a mostly-complete however non-functional clone of Superman. According to documentation on the computers, the individual present in pod eight dash seven three was the actual Roy William Harper. Two successful clones of Roy Harper had been completed and programmed at an earlier date. These clones being Jim Harper, alias Guardian, and the currently missing Roy Harper clone who has been acting in the role of Speedy for, if the documentation is correct, two years." Guy Gardner recited to the entirety of the Justice League.

Under normal circumstances, an affiliate would not be invited to the Watchtower. Guy, however, was a Green Lantern and trying to hide the orbiting station would have been an act of stupidity.

It had been a gift from his own patrons, after all.

The apprentices had gone off on an unsactioned excursion to 'Help' put out fires at the Cadmus Labs in Washington and come back with three Kryptonian clones, one Human clone and a missing person that the Justice League hadn't even noticed was missing.

"Thank you for your report, Lantern Gardner. Was there anything else of note?" Wonder Woman was taking this best of the group. Perhaps it was the wisdom from her greater age, or else because she hadn't had an apprentice to worry about.

"Yes, actually. At the young man, Alchemist's urging, I performed a complete system download of the Cadmus computers relating to their cloning projects, as well as seeded said computers with tracking software. He seemed to believe there was an especially high likelihood that they would either be stolen or misplaced after being collected for evidence. If you can provide an isolated terminal with storage exceeding four terabytes, I can leave a copy of all relevant medical and experimental data here."

That was the source of Batman's current headache. He'd had to push especially hard to bring in more than just Robin. Suggesting that they needed to take an active hand in building the next generation of the Justice League.

Clark and Diana may not have been aging much, but everyone else was growing older. If they didn't prepare for the future, someone else would.

"Come on." John Stewart stood up, leading Guy from the room. "I think we've got a computer available over in medical."

Batman knew the real discussion was about to begin.

"Now that we're all caught up on current events, we need to discuss how, exactly, we're going to deal with this." Giovanni 'John' Zatarra wasted no time.

"A cloned race with roughly five hundred members declaring their independance, on the Fourth of July. That's a bit on the nose, isn't it?" Came from the Flash.

The news had gotten involved after the sidekicks had been teleported to the entrance of Cadmus. They had barely been able to keep the Kryptonian clones out of it.

Barely.

When the reporter had seen the Genomorph Dubbilex it had turned into a circus. The artificial life form clearly had no idea how to handle them.

He'd stumbled, struggled to explain the situation and what the Genomorphs were and their situation.

When he mentioned that he and his kind had been created for the purpose of working, the reporter had asked a simple question.

'What's your salary like?'

'I am given food and a bed. So long as I remain useful, I am not disposed of.'

And it just exploded from there.

"I will discuss this with the leadership of Mars." J'onn said from the end of their table. "We are perhaps the best suited to accept a race that is interconnected as the Genomorphs are."

"Assuming they accept the Genomorphs, Stewart and I should be able to help with transportation." Came from Hal Jordan.

"Then we should table this topic and revisit it after J'onn hears back from his home planet." Superman finally interjected. He'd been struggling since the clones made from him had come to light.

"Very well. We need to discuss the sidekicks." That Captain Atom brought it up was a surprise to noone. "I'm having a hard time deciding how we should proceed. Clearly discipline needs to be enforced, they were instructed to wait at the Hall and failed to follow orders. However, their actions revealed crimes we had not even begun to suspect and resulted in-"

The silver man waved at the piles of documents placed in front of Green Arrow's empty seat.

"-all of this coming to light."

"Perhaps it would be best if we tailor our responses based on their individual actions? Each of them have clear areas in need of improvement." Batman attempted to mediate. He would be having words with Robin, likely after an extended training session so the young man would be too tired to do anything except sit down and listen.

The others would require a more... nuanced approach.

-----

Leslie was exhausted.

He'd been running for the better part of an hour, and he could swear he wasn't any further along than when he started.

Being on a treadmill, this is a rather accurate description.

He was in the gym in the Hall of Justice, the Tuesday two days after the whole Cadmus fiasco.

Had he known it was going to be such an issue? Yes. Was he going to admit to that? Not unless the Martian Manhunter was doing the asking.

He was incredibly surprised to see Batman coming in to use the facility. The Batcave almost certainly had better equipment.

The caped crusader got on the treadmill next to him, still in full regalia.

The man started at a jog.

Leslie, dressed in a pair of shorts and a sweaty, sticky tee-shirt would have felt underdressed... But fitness isn't a competition against anyone but yourself.

"I wasn't aware that you could teleport other people." Ah. So that's what this was.

"It's... Hah... Not great yet. Still drains huh vitality of the target." Did he have to do this while Leslie was running?

Probably.

"So why didn't you leave with the others?" Batman was matching his own pace, maybe a little faster to account for longer legs.

"Kr was a hah a hybrid. People like, like Desmond don't make a hybrid unless hah unless the purebreed is bad." Leslie lowered the treadmill speed. It was hard to talk when your lungs are burning.

"Experience with scientists like him?" Batman was still breathing calm and evenly.

"No, no. Dog breeders. Talked about puppies the same way, like product. Things." Leslie tried to drink some water, but he was still moving too fast, some spilling down his chin.

He tried to wipe it away, but just spread it around with more sweat.

"So why did you think to do things yourself, instead of relying on your teammates?" Ah, here it was. The meat of the issue.

"I'm not great with people. Need time to adapt to them. Figure out how to work with them. Part of why I requested to do support. Repairs. That kind of stuff." It was still hard for Leslie to breathe, but it was evening out.

"...If that's what you wanted to do, why approach me? Why the Justice League?"

"I like what you stand for. Your goals." Did Leslie feel like lying today? No, not really. "And I knew you could afford what I was offering, at the price I was offering. The money wasn't the important part. I could make ten times that in California curing AIDS or whatever the rich and wealthy have. The Justice League offers legitimacy, it tells people I'm doing the right thing for the right reason. They see me at a fire fixing smoke inhalation? Good press. I take a day and go cure a children's cancer ward? Even better."

"You didn't strike me as being too concerned with your reputation."

"I can multitask, Batman. And, hah, who says it's my reputation?" Leslie turned down the treadmill until it stopped. "How many metahuman kids are out there right now? How many are there going to be tomorrow? Next year?"

Leslie couldn't be sure who the intense stare focused on him belonged too.

Batman?

Or Bruce Wayne.

"And it won't matter how many times I tell them I'm a wizard, or that I don't have a metagene. They're going to think I'm a meta anyway. Almost all of the heroes here? Either use tools or got their superpower in some weird accident. Hell, the first Flash said he got superspeed from heavy water!" Leslie took a deep gulp of water. "And all those kids out there born with a power that they're afraid of, because almost every well known metahuman is a villain? They're gonna be afraid of you. A lot of 'em are already waiting for the hammer to drop, thinking they're gonna be the next round of Japanese getting sent to concentration camps here in the U.S."

"That's... That's not going to happen. We won't let it!" The most painful part of this for Leslie? He knew Batman meant it.

He reached into his inventory, pulling out a vial.

"Cadmus was already working on mass produced super powers." He held it out to Batman on an open palm. He took it, gingerly, as though even holding it too tightly would unleash its contents. "And that concentration camp? It already exists. Filled with the worst monsters you can imagine, right next to scared kids who just got handed a bad lot in life and no good advice."

"You can't mean-"

"Belle Reeve."

I really, really liked how you handled this chapter! I also love how Alchemist is making the Justice League actually plan for failure rather than assuming that things are over because the immediate conflict is done.

"Why didn't you rely on your teammates?"

"They aren't MY team mates, they're dipshit kids who think they're hot shit. That they haven't fucked up royally doesn't change that."

Because, frankly, Robin's spoiled especially by the whole 'Batman Secrets top Everyone elses' schtick, Wally's a dickhead, and Kaldur's just putting the hours and actively won't step in to wrangle the other two most days. Player One's an unknown. But its patently obvious that a 'newbie' trying to get those three 'veterans' to heed anything they (the newbie) says is a nonstarter.

At first when you started this arc I didn't like how much you stuck to canon then you finish it off like this. You magnificent bastard.

I really like this chapter, not the least because it showcases the League's reactions to what's going on in a human manner, and gives us some relatively unfiltered insight into Leslie. I think Batman would be the best person to broach the 'issues' of Belle Reeve with, since he'd actually argue convincingly for keeping it while also listening to Leslie's concerns.

As an aside, I still hope Player One actually serves a point soon. He's been hugely static thus far, though then again, he's only been visible for a few chapters.

Well, he already does serve a point, kind of. He's the what-if reflection of Alchemist. The point of comparison. The whole call to action of the story was that Leslie thought the bog standard Gamer powers always ended up destroying the person somewhere along the way hence his nerfed set. Player One is a living and breathing example (in real time) of what could have been. Of what he was afraid of. There's a reason he's static and a bit devoid of personality, ya know? That's the point.

Was the female Kryptonian a clone or was it Kara? Don't remember them mentioning her in this chapter. You'd think it'd be something they would want to discuss. I could see Superman avoiding it if she's a clone but not the others really. Always found it kind of weird that a bigger fuss wasn't made about the Geneomorphs in the show. Good to see they will be getting some help.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! A lot of the stations of canon are hard to avoid because, if I'm doing my best to stay faithful to DC lore and the history of the YJ storyline, they have momentum that's been building up for years, if not decades or more. Avoiding them entirely might not be doable, but if enough things change early on then the future journey should change too! I just hope I'm good enough to make sure that the events going through it make sense.

She was mentioned, but not directly.

The League isn't aware of further details yet for the simple fact that they haven't had a chance to review the massive amount of data brought back from Cadmus.

i wonder how difficult a safe summoning spell would be to get?
Like, for scouting, as a beacon to teleport to, someone to complain to, take hits for you, and if its big enough, a mode of transport?

I enjoy how this is coming along.
Some comments:
1)Given they were running genetic experiments involving three different species and had produced at least five hundred individuals? I suspect that the amount of biomedical data that Guy has should be in the petabyte/exabyte range. Four terabytes just seems a tad too small for the genomes and proteomes involved.

2)Three part-human/Martian/Kryptonian hybrids?
That certainly put the cat among the pigeons. And the crime scene was much more thoroughly scrutinized here than in canon. Hopefully Match actually gets medical care in this AU. Poor Superman though; dude was essentially sexually violated, and I can see why he's squicked out, even before realizing the identity of the human donor in these experiments. Poor guys as much a victim as the poor kids.

3)Looks like Kara is not showing up in this story, because whoever the female clone ends up being(Mia Kent/Cir-El, probably, given the similar origins, but Claire Kent, Ariella Kent, Lara Lane Lent, Linda Danvers, Laurel Gand and Matrix are all options) is likely to take her place as Supergirl.

And the manner of the discovery of Roy Harper the First and Third has probably thoroughly derailed Artemis joining the team as Oliver Queen's nominee; poor Ollie has a lot more things to worry about. If she joins, it's probably someone else bringing her in.

Some parity between the boys and girls would be nice.

4) I hope the Genomorphs sue the backers of Cadmus into the ground. False imprisonment, slavery, theft of wages......by all rights, this being the infamously litigious US, there should be a procession of heavyweight lawyers offering their services on contingency basis. Which the JL should be supporting, since it will force legal discovery.

And that doesn't count the federal charges.
Homicide is probably on the list.

5) I wonder if the JL realize the size of the identity breach implied here? Bruce should. Ditto Diana. It was something that was never really explored in the YJ series, but it should be clear their secret IDs have been penetrated by unknowns.

There's certainly a stronger argument for going full Justice League Unlimited here. Especially with expanding the civilian support staff. Someone has to handle the investigative work, and Question is too crazy to be anything more than a consultant.

6) Vial?
Oh, the Blockbuster formula. The drug that Dr Desmond drank to turn himself into Blockbuster in the TV series. And which Kobra used to create Mammoth.

I was wondering if this was Worm intruding.

You are making a lot of assumptions here.

Literally the only thing we know about them is that they are either deep enough into gamer culture, or so shy, that Player One was the only moniker they could come up with. We dont even known if they are male or female, or how Gaia implemented their own game system.

I certainly get the impression that Terra-tan did not put a second Gamer-type into the same country, and possibly the same city, as Alchemist without some overarching aim. I mean, if Player One had found themselves in Eurasia or Africa, they and Alchemist would not have crossed paths for years, if ever.

The human genome only takes up about 200 GB, so a few TB isn't far off.
My data says 700MB to 3GB, depending on the source for the raw genomic data. Then you add the proteomic data and whatever mitochondrial DNA you pull out.On top of that you are sequencing two other non-terrestrial species in full with their genomic data and proteomes and quirks; carbon based, but we have no idea what their chromosome analogued are like.

And then things get tricky, as you are now trying to combine them in a manner that is both viable and in which the end product turns out phenotypically human/kryptonian and with superpowers. And thats not just for the five hundred genomorphs and 3 successful Kryptonian hybrids, but also for the hundreds, possibly thousands or tens of thousands of failures. All of which you keep records of as you figure out your mistakes and what went wrong.

I'm honestly not sure exabytes is enough frankly.
I'm not sure human equipment would have been sufficient, given the head of the project was just a normal unethical doctor instead of a supersmart mad scientist; I would not be surprised to find that Apokolips was involved in this somewhere.

In regards to the amount of data; Gardner did specify that he was leaving behind 'Relevant' medical and experimental data. I'd imagine that asking the green lantern ring AI to curate anything, even in the exabyte range would significantly pare down the size.

To summons. Those tend to need micromanagement. Conjuring an elemental force to act on your behalf could be problematic, especially if they have their own alien logic. A fire elemental might seem like a good idea until you ask for it to help with something not fire related.
Or at least, not fire related at first.
Or try to ask it to help with a fire that's already ongoing. You think you're asking it to put the fire out. It thinks you're asking to make the fire bigger.

It does offer a lot of room for shenanigans, I'll have to admit that.

I went with genome's secret spice being Martian DNA specifically for the shapeshifter aspect. I have a difficult time believing that Cadmus just magically came up with some cure-all binding agent that would allow them to make human/elephant and human/electric eel hybrids. And then the psychic powers need to be factored in! Human metagenes are fairly unpredictable, but there's this one species that's all conveniently psychic who's been bleeding all over the place...

Hmm, i wonder if Spot is around and willing to help out?
could probably buy some neat things for Stanley, along with health insurance, as payment?

Edit: Also a heads up about the Other Stanley might win you some points...

And the porn star from the same species, conveniently leaving gene samples all over the set.

Especially in his newest porno, where the Martian womanhunter has been captured in a lab where the female scientists tries to figure out the secret of his massive [expunged] and tasty [expunged] until he can seduce his way out of the lab, conveniently leaving multiple test tubes of the stuff. _________________________________________________________________________

The same night after his talk with Batman, Leslie was relaxing. He'd bought a pair of spellbooks from the game shop, one that would drain MP from enemies and was... Honestly, kind of expensive, considering he'd yet to have to deal with even a single spellcaster.

The closest he'd come had been seeing Giovanni Zatara through a computer screen.

Aqualad might count. Maybe. But Leslie had a good idea that draining a nominal ally for a pittance of magic might be a bad thing.

Still, it might come in handy some day.

The other one was less of a book and more of a scroll. Golden, written in archaic english and half of it was functionally complaining about how the spells on it were restricted, or forbidden, or 'limited' because a more complete version was considered 'impossible' when it was written.

Still, it was five spells for a little over thirteen thousand GP. Three of which would actually be useful, however limited they were at level one. A repair spell, a near-invisibility spell and the real kicker, a spell-deflection spell. There was also a basic light spell and another to turn the casters weapon invisible, but he didn't have much current use for those.

At level one, the deflection spell would last for three seconds and could even turn away attacks from an unliving nightmare that had literally devoured a god.

He wasn't eager to test it, but in this nightmarish death world where the good guys were perpetually a day late and a dollar short? He'd take whatever he could get.

As much as he'd prefer to hide away and just play with all the delightful new magics, Leslie couldn't justify it to himself. The world was going to get worse and worse and he couldn't remember if it ever got better.

Really today had been a pretty good day! He'd finished the quest chain for Saitama Someday, learned a bunch of nifty new spells, really he didn't have much left to do!

Except...

Leslie hesitantly pulled one last book from his inventory.

He'd been putting of reading the book De Le Metalica, within which lay the secrets of imbuing metal with life. As well as creating a body, a human body, using it.

He opened the cover...

And it was blank.

He flipped to the next page, and the page after that!

All empty!

This book had cost him a literal fortune!

"What the hell is this?!" That couldn't be right!

"-Ye Seeker of Forbidden Knowledge.-" The words, coming from the book itself, echoed throughout the small room.

That... Was not good!

"-Prove yourself worthy!-" Glyphs and circles started filling the pages as they rapidly flipped on their own, the book holding itself in the air.

Leslie had forgotten this part.

He swallowed thickly and tried to quell the hammering of his heart.

Shaking, he reached out, pushing his hand into the light shining from within the endless pages.

And the book dropped to the ground in the empty room, slamming itself shut.

-----

Coming to in an oddly lit room is always pretty sketchy.

Leslie looked around himself as distant memories slowly came back into focus. He was leaning against a lone door on a floating platform, stairs leading down.

Looking around, he could see various platforms all arranged in a circle around the door, with stairs leading to each sequentially until they wrapped back around at the bottom.

He'd forgotten this book was protected, the words inside of it sealed away...

"Game Shop?" He tried.

--ERROR!--
--Service: Game Shop unavailable--
--Interference detected!--

Well, that was great.

He tried to teleport out, but that didn't seem to work. He could teleport to one of the other platforms though!

Alright. He had one more option to try.

"ID Escape!"

--ERROR!--
--Skill: ID Escape can only be used inside Illusion Dungeons!--

Alright. Awesome.

Leslie returned to the central platform, with the freefloating door, and read the plaque situated on it.

"-The Door Was Open But An Hour Past-"

-----

It was difficult to get any rest here. Sometimes after clearing a puzzle, he'd be dropped into an otherwise empty room. Actual walls, with a door at the end. His buffs didn't wear off just because he went to sleep, so he had Protect and Blink on at all times.

He'd still be woken up well before he could get any proper sleep, often by a lightning bolt or explosion striking too close to his head.

He'd never been part of the military, and this was one of the major reasons!

At least the things had the decency to make him 'wake up' before going on the offensive.

The typical fight against these things usually involved him teleporting after an attack, using Osmose, then using Esuna because everything caused a debilitation of some kind.

Burns from fire spells, frostbite from ice spell, electrocution was the biggest issue. He'd do his best with his deflection spell, but the window it was active was short for now, and he was often attacked by packs of enemies instead of just one or two.

The lightning after effect would cause his limbs to spasm, his thoughts to stutter and was, without a doubt, the most painful of the bunch.

After clearing that mess out of his system, he'd hit whatever was attacking him with Osmose, followed by healing spells. Then Osmose again and Flare until dead.

If he had to redo his buffs, he'd hit the blasting books, floating pumpkins and potion vials with Osmose one more time for good measure.

-----

"-The Elements Exist In Harmony, But One Has Broken The Chain-"

-----

"-Often Is The Path Of Enlightenment Found In The Dark-"

-----

Leslie stood before a being, massive and powerful, wearing blue armor shaped like the carapace of a beetle.

Duras Drum, a great spirit, possibly a god in a lot of definitions. The Guardian of Illusion.

Leslie didn't know how long he'd been here. It certainly took longer than when he'd played through the dungeon in a video game.

So much longer.

He'd had to try and get some sleep, but he could only steal a few hours at a time before more things, floating books, floating pumpkins and intelligent alchemy vials would attack him.

Homonculus. Dwarf in the flask. The meaning was not lost on him.

He'd run out of food... Maybe two days ago? Three? He really didn't know. He also only had three bottles of water left in his inventory.

The alchemy vials would occasionally drop items, along with the experience and GP he'd been getting... But he'd tried eating the nectarines they left behind.

They restored HP and MP, but did nothing for his hunger.

He'd gotten some interesting drops from the books, too. What he was going to do with three copies of the Necronomicon he didn't know, but he had them.

Positive notes though! Osmose, Life and Cure had all hit sixteen, their max level! He wasn't sure how long ago that had actually happened, but it was a huge milestone for him!

"-You Have Done Well, Seeker.-" Duras Drum looked down upon him.

Filthy, disheveled, exhausted and hungry.
He didn't feel he'd done well at all.

"-For What Have You Come To Learn?-" The Guardian didn't speak, so much as impressed its intent upon the world.

"I need." Leslie swallowed. His mouth was dry, his legs felt weak, his stomach was cramping and his eyes burned. "I need the secrets of steel, and the knowledge of the Holmcross."

The Guardian leaned down, wise eyes buried deep in the darkness under his golden crown.

"-Such Knowledge Is Sealed, And For Good Reason. What Reason Could You Offer To Merit This Ruinous Wisdom?-"

"This body-" Leslie put his hand over his chest, above his heart before dropping it back down. "-doesn't belong to me. I need to return it. I've spoken to the power behind Ge Ramtos, she's offered to find the proper soul. I just need to find a vessel for my own."

Leslie held his eyes shut, failing to push the exhaustion burning at them away.

"And I won't displace someone else, or steal another body. I have to make my own."

"-Your Desire Is Selfish-" Duras Drum had his arms crossed. Leslie didn't know if it was disapproval in his voice, but it felt like it.

"I know." And Leslie did. His eyes burned, now with tears instead of just exhaustion.

He could normally control himself better than this, but he was just...

Just so tired.

"-You Would Give A Mother Her Son. Give A Child Another Chance At Life. Bear Upon Your Shoulders The Burden Of Righting These Wrongs. Are You Certain You Wish For This Knowledge?-"

"...No." Leslie wasn't prepared to hear the Guardian Spirit -laugh- at his answer.

"-Good! I Am The Guardian Of Illusion! Shadows And Doubt Are My Domain! I Am Both Mans Greatest Foe And Staunchest Ally, For With Every Defeat We Both Grow Greater! Uncertainty Allows For Us To Question Our Truths! Through Uncertainty, Illusions Are Dispelled And Falsehoods Discarded! You Came Seeking Knowledge, And With It You Shall Be Freed From My Realm.-"

"...Thank you." Leslie wiped at his eyes, trying to clear them.

"-Do Not Thank Me. Not For This. This Knowledge Is A Burden. A Weapon. More Dangerous To You Than To Any Other. Tread Carefully @**&@%$#%, Lest You Invite Destruction Into Your Very Soul.-" Duras Drum placed one great claw upon Leslie's head, pushing -something- into him.

No, not something. Words, numbers, formulae and notes were being carved into the core of his very being, knowledge etched into spirit rather than mind.

Long, long before Duras Drum was done, Leslie was screaming as though fire was being poured into him.

And he didn't stop until he woke back up, once more in the real world.

A blank, nameless book on the floor next to him.

Thanks for the chapter!

3 copies of the Necronomicon? Oh boy. Is the MC about to class up into a Necromancer/Golemancer/Summoner ?

I can see the Future Klarion fight going....interesting.

Klarion: I am a Lord of Chaos! Fear me!
MC: Summon Bigger Fish.
