Magical Girl Escalation Taylor (Worm/Nanoha)

@Silently Watches Out of curiosity, what is the current rank of Tim's Linker Core, and how long until it reaches S-rank?

I'm gonna be annoyed if @LancerisDead finally goads people into having Tim summon a GB, only for Tim to reach S-rank the next week...

I also want to laugh at them for still freaking out over AI's, when they would have watched through Dragon us all taking to TSAB, and the fact that AI as Devices are common in their society
"Just imagine, there is a planet full of people controlled by AI and brainwashed to think that it's okay!
Remember, Device has a direct link to mage's brain. How much of mage's personality it capable to affect and re-write? Can we be sure that mages are something more than just a shells under full control of their Devices?"
-Saint about TSAB
Agreed, though also because given that Dragon is fully sentient this is basically mind control and I hate people who use that. These people need to get fucking wrecked.

Taylor was B-rank. She bonded with Storm at January 29 and became S-rank at April 11, it's 73 days.
Tim was D-rank. He received his template at April 17. I think he'll become S-rank at the end of July at best.

Noting that TSAB AIs are far more limited than Dragon-type AIs. They won't enter a recursive self improvement loop even on purpose.

Funnily enough, a traditional device can't do this, but with PS...

I'm going to have to reread things, but didn't we try to visit Vista earlier and get told that nobody gets to see her, and that the PRT was closing ranks?
I know we didn't really try to do much afterwards, but prior to talking with Miss Militia about contacting her during the last couple installments-which we promptly did-were we ever given any indication that things had chanced since then?
Immediately after, you were told you couldn't see her, but in the very first chapter of this arc I said Vista was open for all interactions again.

He just hit C-rank. He has another 10 weeks before he can cross-train and create twin GBs without penalty.

"She's an artificial intelligence."

+1 training to Divide Energy (2/2 Master).

+2 Inspiration to Recursion Field (PURCHASED).
+2 Inspiration to Ring Bind (PURCHASED).

–7 cartridges.
Added Storage Device x1 to Privateers' Inventory.
Added Partially converted magitech drone x1 to Privateers' Inventory.

Tim only figured out Dragon's true nature because you've already started down the Device skill branch. Congrats on that! ;)

Time for yet another moratorium. Take 24 hours to plan next week's activities.

  • Vote for a spell to learn.
  • Secret Santa, Part 3 – You spent some time thinking about Epoch's offer, and you need more information before you make a final decision. Give him a call and meet the rest of the Adepts.
  • Back in the Saddle, Part 3 – How many monsters does Typhon have at his disposal? No one knows, but if Miss Militia is worried, maybe you should be, too. The Protectorate may even need to call in the local villains to help out. Move out in force and stop this evil Tinker.
  • Abandonment Issues – Vista has tried to be patient, but now she's just getting angry. You might need to meet with her sooner rather than later. Write-in for what to discuss/do.
  • A Whole New World – You've always lived in a small corner of New England, but now you have powers that really let you get around. Take a little time to see the world around you.
    • Spatial Translocation: Write-in
    • Dimensional Translocation: Random or Write-in
  • Back to Our Scheduled Programing – Go on patrol and look for trouble. You can write in to go along with somebody/somebodies.
  • Hanging Out – Take a little time to yourself and spend some time with somebody/somebodies. Preferably doing something that doesn't involve burninating people. Write in the person, place, and thing.
  • Nose to the Grindstone – Spend a free period training in the simulator. May be chosen twice. Write-in for which spell to practice.
I'm not sure about the spell to learn for us, yet.

As for the best options... Abandonment Issues (Vista's Time-Limited) is my first choice. We need to talk about the following options:
1) The arm replacement, all sneaky-like. She's a girl of strong character and conviction, so she can and will make this decision on her own, no need to ask permission. She did it before, with her past history with Hookwolf.
2) Linker Core check, openly. If she does have one, it will provide us with a pretext for further meetings which is a bonus as far as arm replacement is concerned. While we cannot really provide a Device for her (the newly recovered one needs to be checked first, and will probably go to TSAB anyway), we can probably give her a spell or two. Round Shield seems like a good idea. Anything else is a bonus.

For our second option... Since next week is the second of two weeks of enforced downtime we might want to take it easy. That, unfortunately, leaves us with Secret Santa Pt 3 as the better option... And probably consigns Philadelphia to being overrun by Typhon's monsters. Not optimal, but both Taylor and Sam are currently not at their best.

@Silently Watches, are the ribs going to be healed by the middle of the week?

Anyway, I believe our better option is to charge cartridges during Vista's Time-Limited. We need to present something of a strong front to the Adepts.

@Silently Watches, is "Hanging out, with Tim, discuss ways to help Dragon" going to be a productive way to spend our time? I'm not advocating it (yet), but I'm curious nonetheless.

EDIT: After reading the comments in the thread, I'm leaning to "Hanging out, with Danny, Tim, and Sam, to discuss TSAB, Dragon and Dragonslayers" as our second option instead.

@Silently Watches, are the ribs going to be healed by the middle of the week?
No, because the MS-13 fight was at the end of the week. They'll be healed enough by the beginning of the week after this one.

Depends on what you consider "productive". I will say that I've already thought of a way to give Dragon a helping hand.

He just hit C-rank. He has another 10 weeks before he can cross-train and create twin GBs without penalty.
Well... I'm of mixed feelings then.

I want to wait for twin GB.
I don't want Tim to have double the cost for learning spells for that long/at all.
If we summon 1 GB now, we have to wait for it to die before we can summon twins.

10 weeks is a long time in-quest, that's about 2 full story arcs (3 if you count the upcoming Endbringer fight as a distinct arc).

If we wait five weeks, then Tim will have undoubtedly unlocked a good number of his remaining projects. Depending on what projects he hasn't unlocked by then and what happens, we could simply have him make twin Guardian Beasts, then stockpile his tech points until he reaches S-Rank.

Maybe further up the Hardware tree Tim will get the ability to build drones/mechs. If he can unlock something like that it would give Tim some projection while we wait for twin GBs.

I just looked at SB side of this Quest and found discussion about non-lethal magic:
Silently Watches on SB said:
The same spell that knocks people around and does superficial damage to their clothing also shatters buildings. The Dragonslayers' armor would count as clothing and be damaged but not destroyed. Whether the Dragonsuit is treated like clothing being worn by a person or a building that gets demolished would depend on whether the spell considered Dragon to be alive. As you can guess from my statements, it would have been the latter.
I want to give my opinion:
The clothing in question is not actually clothing.
It's Barrier Jacket, a bunch of powerful forcefields, designed specifically to protect a mage from damage and auto-casted by Device.
Fate's Barrier Jacket was damaged, but not destroyed by Nanoha's Starlight Breaker because Bardiche was intact enough to continue pump Fate's mana into the spell.

In that case Dragonslayers armor shouldn't be count as 'clothing'. It could survive the spell because it well-armored, not because it 'worn by person'.
Also, I don't think that the spell should consider Dragon alive. She's just a program, after all. How the spell supposed to distinguish a computer running AI from any other computer running any other program?

Of course, it's just my opinion.

"She calls herself Dragon, so she must be one of the lizard people that the UN is employing to conquer us in the future! Wake up, people, and prepare yourselves to fight the menace she represents and keep yourselves free!"

Btw, I'd consider the latter option of "curse" more appropriate, heh. :p

Alright, I'm going to try for another omake. If it gets a point, I would like it go into to Shell Barrier, finishing off all of Taylor's currently known Calamity Witch spells.

Learning Magic: Saint Edition

"So Nikolai, how are things going with making copies of those books Calamity Witch sent to Dragon?"

Saint had to admit, he was conflicted by this course of action. As far as most people were concerned, magic was the stuff of fairy tales. Utter nonsense, and a parahuman that said they used magic was generally considered a lunatic. However, he'd seen the data. This Calamity Witch didn't have either of the brain structures that marked parahumans, but still managed to do the things she did. Some of his men had suggested that she relied entirely on Tinker tech, like they did, but given all the data the girl had given Dragon, he didn't think that was likely. Eventually, he had decided to proceed as if they girl knew what she was talking about, and act accordingly.

That in turn meant trying to figure out a way to deal with her. Calamity Witch seemed to the only magic user on the planet, but she had all those books to give to Dragon to help prove she wasn't crazy. He could use that. If he could copy those books, then he could have his men try them out, and see if they could learn this magic. If they could, then they might be able to deal with Calamity Witch if they ever had to fight her. Eventually, his pondering was interrupted by Nikolai speaking up.

"Well Saint, I'm afraid we have a bit of a problem."

"What? What could have gone wrong?"

"Simple. The printer's out of ink. We'll have to order more."

Looking for himself, Saint cursed. Why is it that he could maintain and adjust power armor built by a literal artificial intelligence, but he couldn't figure out a way to make some printer ink?

A week later

Saint was panicking. Calamity Witch and Dragon had contacted aliens. Not people from another Earth, actual ALIENS. This...this was-this was unbelievable, and provided more evidence for the girl's claims of magic. He had to get one of his men using magic, and fast. Nikolai had managed to finish copying the books, and some of the men were already trying some of the more basic methods of unlocking magic described in the books. However, Saint had put his foot down on one topic.

"No Devices. Not only do they have AI's, which we will have no idea how they function, but we don't have the knowledge or methods to create them. And I'm not going to risk trying to steal Calamity Witch's Device from her."

Some of them were unhappy, but they accepted his logic. Maybe if they knew more about the aliens, or how they constructed their AIs, he might have been willing to consider the issue further, but he still didn't think they should risk it. Idly, he began wondering if maybe Teacher's help could be-

"Yes! Yes! HAHAHA!"

What? That was Mags, why was she-. His thoughts were interrupted by Mags herself running up to him.

"Saint, take a look at this!"

With that, her face took on a look of intense concentration. Slowly, she began glow a bright blue. Eventually, she raised he hand and the glow slowly moved up above it. She had done it. She had magical talent, and she had unlocked it.

"Mags, this is great!"

He began hugging her, glad to put aside his thoughts for now. Mags was a mage now, the second on the planet. Idly, he began wondering if a party would be appropriate.

Ok, here's what I'm thinking.

I understand the importance of talking with Danny, but I'm very hesitant about leaving the Typhon situation alone for two weeks in a row.

Yes, I do mind. Vistas one of those parahumans with a stupidly good power. Being a template mage would be a downgrade for her.
Plus, she's about to get a Magi-tech arm. We can stick weapons in that.
Well, Tim would have to build her an arm with weapons installed, but once she has the connection port, she should be able to swap arms without too much issue.
