I feel a need to join The Paranoia Train to remind everyone about two very real possibilities:

– It's a trap. Cassiel's parent know about her attempts of contact us and escape and is using them to manipulate us, like in that scenario, for example:
3. A Zizard did it. Dinah triggered with some kind of dream-controlling/telepathic ability, she was kidnapped and 'upgraded' by Ziz, so Simurgh can influence us.

– There is a good reason why Cassiel is chained. By freeing her we will free a monster.

Now, when I indulgeg my paranoia, I may vote:

[X] Keep the line open – You're a hero, and this is a little girl begging for help. So long as she doesn't do anything threatening, let her call you when she can.
-[X] have Storm monitor us and keep an eye out for anything untoward, maybe it can join in to analyze more fully? Does it have any ideas? Could we trace it better if it tries to do so while we're connected?

Also, I want to point at this:
[] Back in the Saddle, Part 2
-[] With Miss Militia
Yeah, good work, people. Taylor paired with powerful, but squishy parahuman again.
Let us hope it'll work better than last time.

So, after re-reading through the past events, beginning of the quest and other related trivia and WOG I wasn't sure about, I'm about say, 75%? sure that what we saw is not actually real but a complete mental landscape, and it's in fact directly to Perfect Storm or/and at least the raiding of the Agarthi.
I mean, with us picking Pefect Storm from beside a dumpster, it wouldn't be impossible that another piece of good ol' Belkan Galean forbidden tech to have fallen on Bet. But Cassiel's dialogue:
"You… You came back?"
"I'm a bad girl. Bad girls are punished," she says in the dead voice of someone reciting an oft-heard condemnation.
"Cassiel. If that's okay." She looks down and whispers"My parent didn't think I deserved a name."
"You can't come over here," she says again. Cassiel hunches her shoulders, looking smaller and even younger than her nine-ish years warrant. "And you can't use your magic. How can you save me?"

Reminded me a lot of this, all the way from Set Up 1.3
Where am I?

Who am I?

What is my purpose?

How did I get here?

Where am I supposed to be?

Will someone come for me?

Help me!

Help me!

Help me!

Help me!

Help m—

Who are you?

What do you want?

Will you help me?

You will.

I will help you, too.

I will give you whatever you want.

I will love you forever.

Just don't send me away again.

Mistress.

Changing my subvote to the Space Battles version (hows SW handle that again? Obviously they went with plain Miss Militia over the SV-only winning 'ask Miss militia if she wants to come or someone else is better' if I'm not misreading tally) and think others should too.

It keeps the "try to trace" intent from the popular one here, but adds an explicit mention of having PS try to monitor and protect us (which is reasonable from PS detecting and stopping this one, even if we don't know just how very well it can do it ie parameter updates).

We need to find whoever did this to Cassiel, and where they're doing it from. Even if Cassie doesn't mean harm, who's to say her 'parents' don't

Tim's Tumultuous Tinkering with Tinker Tech: Part 6

Tim sighed in contentment as he finished mounting the primary focusing array of his BFG (Big F***ing Gun) into it's designated spot on the motorcycle's frame, and attached the various wires and connectors into place.

After running a few tests to make sure everything was working, he smiled widely. That was the most delicate bit he had to work on for the bike until he was much further along in its construction and he had to install the AI core.

Tim looked over at the parts he had ready, then glanced at the new clock Paul had given him after the incident the prior week. It was a nice clock with a very big and bright display. The display didn't just show the time, no it also showed the date as well. It also chimed every hour, on the hour... And Paul had gotten one of the guys that was a bit handier with electronics to rig it so the off switch for the hourly chime was disconnected, and the chime was considerably louder than factory specifications.

Tim had considered removing those modifications from the clock, but in the end only added a button to make it skip the next hourly chime, that he swore to only use when working on something delicate that could be ruined by the distraction. The modifications had been made to help him after all, not as a prank of any type... Though Paul had laughed pretty hard the first time the hourly chime went off, and Tim jumped 3 feet in the air before landing on his ass.

Seeing he still had time before he had to turn in for the night, Tim walked over to his workbench, grabbed a few of the parts lying there, and got to work installing some of the secondary focusing arrays. After finishing that, he glanced at the clock again, and started installing the focusing components for his bombardment weapon.

Unlike the BFG, which would require the bike to change forms, the bombardment weapon was going to have the capability of firing a weaker variant of its normal mode in bike form. When transformed into bombardment mode it would be much stronger, firing nearly 10 times as many shots, with each one being four times stronger. The bombardment weapon was more of a crowd control and distraction weapon, rather than something to focus on one enemy. though it might be useful against a speedster who could dodge his normal shots.

Just as he finished installing the last focusing array for the bombardment weapon, the clock chimed. Tim lanced over, saw it was now 2 AM, and sighed. Looking forlornly at the much reduced pile of parts ready to be installed, he walked over to the door, and turned the lights out as he started getting ready for bed.

-------

Finally done assembling all the near microscopic components of the final AI core, Tim sat up and stretched.

Looking at the pile AI cores in front of him, he smiled, picked them up, and walked over to his bike.

There were 16 AI cores in all, though in truth only one of them was really advanced as far as AI cores go. While not capable of sentience, it could 'think'. The rest were much less complex cores that were basically really good computers with an advanced variant of Deep Learning protocols. Essentially, he could plug them into any interface, and they'd teach themselves how to do the required functions within minutes, and optimize themselves within the first hour of actual use. They'd all be linked into the advanced AI core, which would control and coordinate the lesser cores.

The advanced AI core would in turn be controlled by the next thing he was going to install, an Intelligent Device. Once the device was installed and functioning, he'd set things up so he could actually cast magic on-the-fly through his bike, as long as it was one of the ones he had pre-programmed into the device.

Most of the spell casting in the bike would actually be handled by specific components he'd constructed to cast those spells. Thanks to the shield generator from his old bike, he'd been able to do incredible things with Strong Shield. Not the least of which... Instead of just projecting a field to be able to drive on surfaces like water... He'd be able to ride through the air itself, driving on a surface that only existed while he was on it. A lower-powered Strong Shield would also work as a windshield for the bike, and be the surface the HUD was projected onto. He'd even worked out some shield modes that would allow him to drive UNDER water encased in a bubble of air held in place by shields, as well as using shields to alter his aerodynamic profile, allowing his to reach ludicrous speeds by nearly eliminating drag and air-friction.

Tim finished his musings as he finished installing the last AI core, ate a quick sandwich out of the fridge Paul always made sure was always stocked with stuff Tim could just pick up and eat, and got to work building his bike's Intelligent Device...

---------------

And so ends my newest chapter of "tell, don't show."

I'm getting to the point of trying to cram as much into a chapter as possible, to try and get that much closer to my endpoint, because this is really starting to drag on....

Hmmm... Point could go to, Mass Weapons (mentioned things further down that tech tree), Advanced Device, Digital Blueprints or Strong Shield, based on what was included in the chapter... I think I'll go Strong Shield, and get one more of Tim's skills unlocked. :D

If you don't know what "deep learning" is, it's a form of computer algorithm that allows a computer to teach itself how to do something, rather than having a human program it in.

A REALLY good example of Deep Learning that is actually relevant to current world news (and something that will be talked about and remembered for centuries/millennia, in the Go world): AlphaGo.

AlphaGo is a computer that plays Go.

If you don't know why this is a big deal... Keep this in mind, in the first 32 moves of a Go game there are more possible moves than individual atoms in the entire universe. Most go games last 150-200 moves. It's 100% impossible for a computer to brute-force finding the best move.

Just 7-8 months ago, one of the 10 top pro Go players in the world stated computers were 10 years away from being able to play professional Go players. He had VERY good reason to say this...with what he knew. In hindsight, it was a very mistimed statement, because just 3 months later, in January of this year, Google and DeepMind unveiled AlphaGo. He played AlphaGo, and lost 4-1 in a 5 game series. AlphaGo has gone on to win 10 out of 10 5-game series vs some of the best Go players in the world.

The reason this is relevant? AlphaGo taught itself how to play Go. At first it studied 150,000 records of games played by humans, then it played millions upon millions of games vs itself, constantly improving it's game. It's actually able to mimic the intuition necessary to figure out the best move to make.

The first in a 3-part video series explaining AlphaGo in more detail, oriented to be understandable by someone who knows nothing about Go, it also does a decent job explaining Deep Learning: Really interesting stuff, whether you're interested in Go, AI programming, or neither, but it definitely explains why this will be an event that will be remembered for years to come.

... making the BFG already? I thought Tim was going for non-lethals still.

So a machine-gun mortar.
Not bad.

Not exactly mortar, keep in mind this is Nanoha-tech, and watch the first 12 seconds or so of this clip to get a better idea of what I'm going for:

I didn't use the term "bombardment" when in relation to Nanoha-tech lightly.:D Plus, no actual ammunition to lug around.

Think about 12 weaker shots per volley in bike form, and 120 stronger shots in bombardment form. Tim's mostly thinking it'd be good for crowd control, and quickly disabling everyone in a riot situation (thanks to stun mode), though we all know it'll be useful in other situations as well.

We'll also say that in bike form you can fire 4 volleys a minute, and in bombardment form 3 volleys a minute, though past the scope of this omake Tim will modify it to have a rapid fire mode where it fires a bombardment of 24 or so shots at a time, and cycles through that with a volley every 2 seconds, for a near constant stream of fire.

And given I haven't watched Nanoha... That clip took FOREVER to find, was starting to think that the type of attack I was envisioning wasn't in Nanoha...
... making the BFG already? I thought Tim was going for non-lethals still.
A: All Nanoha spells appear to have a stun setting.
B: Anti-Endbringer weapon, at least an attempt at one (it'll do some damage, but won't be capable of killing one).

Also, at this point in the omake we're like 4-5 months past where we are in the quest, and Tim's got a lot of skills he hasn't unlocked yet.

I'm also a little surprised you didn't say anything about my "tell, don't show" comment, lol.

That's what I get for editing past midnight.
Like feeding a Mogwai past it, but less cool.

Nah, you got the right idea.

1. Setting the BFG to stun... feels sacrilegious.
2. So long as at some point it gets shoved down one's throat.;)

1. Fair point.
2. You've recognized your problem there. I'd be throwing salt on the wound if I lectured you about it without giving you a chance to improve.
That said, there is nothing that pisses off a teacher more than not implementing their corrections, so...:p

VOTE CALLED

I'm not even going to tally this up because there were only a couple of people who didn't vote to let Cassiel call you. More than half of you agreed to have Storm monitor the connection as best it can, too.

So, it looks like edale's latest omake was accepted! It looks like it's unlocked Tim's own Ring Bind version, which starts off able to affect three people at once. I find myself wondering: is this because the Gadgeteer Template is better at Ring Bind than the Calamity Witch Template, or do non-player's have their skills automatically set to Adept, instead of Novice like ours are?

@Silently Watches, when we will next be able to determine Shipwright's building projects for the week? Or did we do that when we had him construct those new building stuff and the mana generator?
I'm going to have that vote at the same time as the next week's activities. I only had it separate the first time because I wanted to get the new mechanic squared away without anything else interfering and I had a chapter that didn't need another vote.

Non-players' skills are automatically Adept and do not progress past that level. Some might start with being able to be cast simultaneously like Aerial Combat, but those will be the most basic skills.

Just remember:
Mana has to come from either him or the batteries/cartridges.
Tim can't make use of cartridges unless he get cross-skilled with the knight skill tree. And yes, I know I'm botching the terminology, it's late and I'm tired.

And I actually am keeping power distribution in mind while doing this, even if most of that isn't making into the omake (damn thing's too long as it is, lol). The reason the bombardment is so much less in bike mode is because most of the power is being used for the shield emitters and actually moving the bike; it recharges faster because it has to dissipate less heat and is using more capacitor banks. Whereas in bombardment/BFG/??? () mode pretty much everything's being used for one purpose.

Right now everything's being powered on the test bench by his Off-Site Power generator. By the time Tim builds and installs the power generator, assume he'll have maxed out the power generation skill tree, and will be installing multiple copies of his most powerful portable generators in the bike, as well as his best mana batteries and such. On top of being able to link to his personal power generator (you KNOW he's gonna install one in himself eventually) for a boost in an emergency.
