Magical Girl Escalation Taylor (Worm/Nanoha)

Guys, we already have a vacation planed after dealing with the Fallen. Let's Taylor have some fun before we hit her again with the trauma train.

It seems we couldn't be bothered with the couple of seconds needed for a Bind
Show me once where Taylor has used Bind as an offensive measure rather than to hold opponents she's already neutralized in some other way.
somehow Sam's nose stopped working and she can't track him
Samantha is a raccoon, not a blood hound. I don't remember ever having her track anybody by scent.
It seems she's starting to forget other people don't have awesome overwhelming powers like she has.
I feel like another character said recently that Taylor's become very accustomed to running with the big dogs…

Or, more honestly, Taylor is still used to capes acting a certain way. It comes with all the mental trauma. Tim, despite his costume, is not a cape and doesn't act like it, and it just caught Taylor off-guard.
"Oh, it's a cape, a member of a violent Neo-Nazi gang... and he's running away from me like a scared little kid. Something doesn't feel right about all this."
FTFY.

He could not have given you a more perfect opportunity. Dropping from the rafter, you swing your staff and ignite the glowing scythe of Flare Blade.

"Shit!"

You raise your blade, but the cape is not attacking. He turns around and runs out the doorway, but as he has forgotten to shrink back down to normal size, what happens is that the top half of his body rips through the wall above the door.

(I can't be the only one who thought that.)
I was actually just about to look for that GIF.

I mean... that's kind of valid? Especially with the way the SV group has kind of disregarded anyone with less than an A rank core as 'useless in a fight' Taylor's kind of forgotten that not everyone can shrug off small arms fire.

"I didn't think I was that scary," you say after a second. Especially not to a cape whom you have never fought before.

Says the cape who melted 90% of the escaped E88 capes from BB. Recognizing an S class cape and running in terror is EXACTLY the right move.

Edit: wait. We didn't even capture him? Really? A nonlethal shooter would have been enough to put him down.

We do not know that, since we didn't actually hit him. With how canon powers similar to this one's worked, I think a non-lethal Solar Wrath might be necessary.

Well... was that actually a kid?

The vast majority of Triggers happen to teenagers. The sheer emotional instability makes triggering far easier. As such, new capes tend to be kids, and having powers does not change that they are kids.

You know, if this is Theo then why is he in the gang in the first place? IIRC in canon he wanted as far away as he could get from gangs and shit.

He wanted to avoid the E88. Like Laura, he most likely wouldn't have been given a choice if he triggered while still in BB. He also doesn't have the support structure that let canon Theo flee, which brings up the question:

@Silently Watches Did Purity rebrand when she joined the Protectorate? Did crusader join the Protectorate, too? I'm thinking bringing them in once we find out* that these are from BB might save a few people who would otherwise be going down with these Wolfheads.

*Presuming I'm right and that Theo doesn't know where Purity is or even that she survived the escape. I'm a big fan of redemption stories. This is part of why I like helping Laura. Helping people who are simply in bad situations and not the kind of *insert a string of profanity of your choice* evil people Wildow was so fond of appeals to me.

I have a minute, so I want to add on to my previous off the cuff comments. I'm well aware this was not the best chapter I've ever written. The last two weeks have quite frankly been shit, so I wanted to get SOMETHING out. That isn't the same thing as scrapping together the focus or mental energy for a protracted chase screen, so thus there isn't one.

I'll address the decision not to chase the cape next chapter.

Purity's power is too distinctive to rebrand effectively, so they're doubling down on the redemption story and making it public that she surrendered, begged for a chance to make things right, is essentially in house arrest when not working under direct Protectorate supervision. Basically "yes she was a villain and is now working as a hero, but we aren't giving her a free pass on anything".

Crusader was able to be rebranded

How?

I mean yeah he's not on the same scale of infamy as Purity, but his power is pretty distinctive. If anything it's more so than yet another flying blaster.

Perhaps he can change what his ghosts look like? Projections are a fairly common powerset, after all.

While I will admit to being disappointed by the slower than average updates, I'm also quite aware that few people have as much free time as I do. I fully understand being under too much pressure to concentrate on creative endeavors. I hope things get better for you, both for your sake and for those delicious updates =)

Please note that I really do wish you the best for your mental, social, and physical health, regardless of what we're getting from you. I'm mildly worried that the previous paragraph's attempt at humor got in the way of that message.

As for not giving chase, I figured Sam and Taylor looked at each other, said "Did he really just do that?", and by the time they tried to chase, he was a perfectly ordinary looking kid, mixed in with other pedestrians, or possibly hiding by melding with something. We don't know the limits of his power, after all. Taking a second to adapt from combat mode to chasing the terrified cape mode is entirely reasonable.

You know I just had a thought. Now that we are working on a serum to produce Linker votes. It might be worth it to give a batch to Eidolon. It would buy us some goodwill, give him something he desperately wants (the ability to be relevant again) and be proof of concept for mass distribution for the PRT.

@Silently Watches. Out of curiosity if Eidolon were to lose his powers what happens to the current EB's?

I believe Eidolon's response to that has been "I wouldn't even if I could" since he was sour that he didn't get even a D rank core like Alexandria.

A problem with that is Taylor really doesn't like Eidolon. He was extremely condescending in their one meeting and any relations with him have been soured. And if you're trying to advertise that your product gives superpowers, don't pick the guy who can generate superpowers by himself. He'd probably just deny ever getting weak and needing a new form of power and just claim that his powers had second triggered into a new form.

He could be lying about the amount of clones he can make and their limitations. He could be saying he can only summon one copy of himself that can't pass through walls or "disappears" when it goes too far from him. He could go for the mover route and keep his clones within his skin, that's something he could do. Without ever letting any clone of himself outside of the limits of his own body, he could appear as a mover with limited flight and the ability to strike at people through any defense.

I may be mistaken but didn't he refuse to even be scanned? So unless WoG said something I didn't see I don't think we know his core size. And even if we do he doesn't. Unless I'm completely misremembering.

You're far from the first person to suggest this. In forum posts immediately after learning that we could make a linker core mutagen, SW confirmed that he wouldn't take one even if we offered it, just out of spite. This is the guy whose ego gave Earth Bet the Endbringers, after all.

You are misremembering. He was scanned, and found not to have a core. At the time, we also scanned Legend, with a negative result, but Alexandria walked out before we could scan her. When that came up later, we scanned her and found a d rank core.

We don't have a cape we let him run off like an idiot because... reasons? It seems we couldn't be bothered with the couple of seconds needed for a Bind, or that somehow Sam's nose stopped working and she can't track him.
Well, we didn't vote to use bind, so it won't be used. Not that we had any clue it would be useful given how this seemed to come out of nowhere and we were not asked for a plan.

I think his ghosts essentially copy what he is wearing when he creates them? Not sure if it ever comes up in the story. So changing his costume would also change his ghosts.
Mostly this, the ghosts are copies of him. There are several duplicator powers in canon, so by changing his costume he can pass it off as a similar but unrelated power.

The issue with Purity is that she isn't a normal flying blaster like New Wave or Taylor. She turns herself into a flying spotlight to the point no one can see her costume until she turns her power down. It's closer to Legend in visual effect.
@Silently Watches. Out of curiosity if Eidolon were to lose his powers what happens to the current EB's?
Not a thing.
That's kind of an unfair question, since we explicitly need to vote to use Bind and have not gotten a combat vote where it would be an effective way to start.
My point is that going for binds up front is not Taylor's MO, not as it's developed over the course of this quest.

Then have more fights right now 3 to 4 fights AT most Taylor has had since she got that Ring Bind doesn't make for much of a MO. Simple fact is too damn few things happen per week/chapter/whatever.

And one of those fights was an Endbringer, while the another was a kill order on the E88. Just how many times have we been in a situation where using a single Ring Bind made sense?

I'm curious if Theo (if it is him, could be a false flag) has buds from any other of the E88 that escaped with him. If we assume he was the trigger with Kaiser's group, then there is Victor, Othala, Rune, Stormtiger, Cricket, and Hookwolf as possibilities for power variants.

All you've done here is prove my point. If all the fights Taylor has been in have been ones where Ring Bind would be useless as an opening move, she has zero reason to turn to it as a first choice in a fight.

Honestly, ring bind as a regular tool isn't really a priority for Taylor because she hasn't had to fight mages regularly. If she'd had to fight mages as regular opponents she'd learn to love using binds. Pretty much all high level mages mix in binds because at the level they fight at even a few seconds it takes for the opponent to break the bind (with those that know how to anyways) could decide the fate of the fight.

Taylor's mentality is too much into the overwhelming firepower side of magic instead of the tricky sort (unlike Nanoha who loves to mix in bind traps and the like to her fighting style of overwhelming firepower, especially in melee to the extent that she develops and uses bind shields that she can quick cast in melee to capture opponents to hold them in place for a attack).

You have a completely different mind set when your fighting an Endbringer compared to fighting a single teenage cape. So has ZERO reason to go to any attack on reflex in this situation. When he tried to scare us out we should have been given a vote.
