Crystalwatcher's Magical Girl Quest!

I do hope then that it will continue to require genuine effort to create a Conquest Ending, rather than "This is the most likely outcome to occur in which you don't actually die"

I'm not typically a fan of games where it's "You die or live long enough to become a villain"

Well it goes like:
-Good End - If you can save, save, if you can befriend, you befriend. You let the ambiguously bad guys get away or capture them live(unambiguously bad enemies of course, can go fry). Work with your team even if they are weaker than you, help them keep up. You do cute things with your friends. Play up the hero tropes.

-Conquest - Power, power is what you need to win. You will fight to gain power, you will solve your problems with power. You can't rely on anyone else. Only your own hands. You train, and study, and train some more. Play the pragmatist tropes

The question then is if we're in a Pragmatists Reality or an Idealists Reality. *Looks at all the shit that's happened* Uhh... Not looking to good.

Honestly, I think the best ending will require a mix of the two.

And it's all the player's fault. :)

It actually takes QUITE a bit of work to skew things so much that you wind up Conquest.

Not really, you just have to see all events, which you'd do the first time through. And grab the CPU's when you can. Boom Conquest ending. And then you are sad panda. It's the third most scene ending according to Steam Achievements. (out of like 10 endings)

I see you've got some real difficulties with discerning the differences between "your" and "you're". It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine, so here's a helpful video to clear that stuff up for you.

but don't you guys think their lives are worth it? Especially with us continually being thrown into disaster after disaster?

We're certainly going to want it at some point, but the same could be said of literally everything on the list. So, it's really a question of priorities. I see the re-equipment as something to do when our team stops being able to contribute to any significant extent, without dying, in the battles we get into.

Honestly, they're pretty well equipped already and powerful when they work as a group. That dakka modifier is quite something. They wouldn't stand up to a goddess, but then, neither would we. I'm not convinced they actually need an upgrade, because they seem to be able to do their jobs successfully without dying for the most part, and they can keep up with us still.

Thus far we've lost one member in what can only be described as extraordinary circumstances (not actual combat), and we've actually died once already ourselves (in combat), so I wouldn't say they're at more risk than ourselves.

It's our job to fight the really bad stuff, and their job to fight mooks, at least in theory, so we're probably more in need than they are of XP. Upgrading them would be helpful, but I'm not seeing any reason why we'd make it our priority at this moment, especially considering that they will improve on their own without being reequipped.

We should be sure to do that. Because I have the feeling that if we don't she's gonna end up as some kind of mid-season boss on the side of darkness and we really do not need that shit.

So, could someone explain Core Containment and how it relates to Armored Core for me? I just read through the threadmarks so if there's clarification on that that's not in them, I missed it.

Core containment is our HP stat, Armored Core is our damage reduction stat. It's all in the character sheet, under 'Stats'.

Obviously, they synergize.

So, could someone explain Core Containment and how it relates to Armored Core for me? I just read through the threadmarks so if there's clarification on that that's not in them, I missed it.

Core Containment is an ability that grants additional health, specifically +50 HP per level.

Armored Core is an ability that reduces the amount of damage we take. More specifically it negates all damage below X% of our health and reduces any damage above that damage by X%. It also adds Level * Y to our Base Resliance which is directly subtracted from any damage we take. X and Y are variable depending upon the grade of Armoed Core we have, it comes in Iron, Steel, Mythril, and Adamantium.

The relationship there is that the higher Core Containment is the more HP we have and so the high level of damage required to bypass Armored Core's damage negation ability.

As for the names... well from what I can tell Nepgear is basically a Divine explosion contained within her Core. She dies when that explosion is released. Core Containment beefs up the Core's containment fields so it requires more damage to breach while Armored Core adds armor onto the Core so that's harder to damage in the first place.

Well, here's a question: who says that Reequip is limited to our normal human allies? Or can't be used on us? It's "improve team equipment", not "improve others equipment".

I'm thinking that Reequip might be the Remake and Equipment systems in Neptunia made real.

Crystalwatcher's Magical Girl Quest!
("Oh shit." - You all know what you're thinking it...)

Congratulations! Up until this point you've been living a pretty average life. Literally. You'd get up, go to school, hang out with friends, and then head home to repeat the next day. That is, until a giant demon of unknown origin spawns in the middle of your neighborhood and slaughters everyone you've ever known and loved.

The mutherfucker had literally dropped onto your damn house in broad daylight.

The good news? You are saved by a magical girl! For a few seconds anyway.

For you see - the monster that spawned is a post-season-five super-boss. That poor little girl operating off shoddy season two magic is slaughtered like cattle, and promptly consumed whole.

Your everyone is dead, and the girl that was supposed to save you is a smear on the ground and a rumbly in the tumbly.

But wait! Turn out the reason this thing is here is you! You are a magical girl!

Are you a...

--Select Difficulty (Different character depending on choice)
[]Veteran - You've been fighting baddies like this for years. Well-known in the magical community you already have the heads of about a dozen Kings of Darkness under your belt. You eat bitches like this for breakfast. (Easy Mode... -ish. You start at high stats and abilities, but your growth is going to be slow going.)

[]Experienced - You've already been through a couple fights already! Your at least a third-season survivor with a good grasp of your abilities! Though... running might be a good idea here. (Medium - Good starting stats, decent growth potential, but there's a good chance you might bite off more than you can chew.)

[]Newbie - You're not even done with Season One yet. Your magic is paper thin to this thing, and you barely have any idea whats going on. (Hard - Low stats, weak spells... but you're likely going to grow to be a real power house if you can survive this.)

[]FRESH MEAT - This is your first magical fight and your powers just woke up. Yeah, you're fucked. Hard. (Ohmygodwhy - you're the poor bastard that has literally just started the game and got their poor ass level-warped to the secret boss chamber that only the Uber Pros even attempt to take on. If you manage to even just survive this, your name is going to be legendary. Somehow manage to kill this sonuvabitch? Your name is going to be synonymous with 'Hard to Kill'.)

Sadly though, that's not all that's happening right now. Because the universe decided to make your day today the worst one you've ever awoken to the world gets in on this. And boy is it going to have a fucking blast with it!

--Select one (Determines Background Setting)
[]Masquerade? What masquerade? (Magic is a common thing. Very common. So the baddies invading Earth don't feel the need to hold back. Sure, it'll cause a ton of damage to what they're trying to rule, but the weaponry of a fully nuclear-armed planet are ready for them. So shit like this happens regularly, and the Normal Human Military has a good idea of what to do in this situation: bring in the tanks. They work closely with Magical Girls the world over as well as Good-Aligned factions like Light Fairies and Angels and so on, so you got tanks in the area and your town is a warzone.)

[]United Front! (Magical Communities are well-connected. If one comes under attack the others scramble to help. This means their enemies have a habit of banding together, but they are far better off together than alone. Similar to above, but no muggles joining in or backup from government sponsorship.)

[]Eternal Darkness... (A baddie won. Quite a while ago at that. Humanity are little more than slaves, and other baddies are trying to knock him off his throne. Magical Girls like you are few and far between. Hunted ruthlessly, the girl that had just jumped passed you was on a timer already. The Darkness is coming for you, and there's little you can do about it.)

So 'yall ready for this? Lets see if you survive!

The Manual

Spending XP

There are currently two ways to spend XP.

The first is by purchasing additional levels in any ability/spell/ect Nepgear already possess. The cost for this is simply: [Current Level] * 10 with multiple levels being calculated sequentially. For example going from Level 3 to Level 4 costs 30XP while going from Level 4 to Level 6 costs 90XP, 40XP for 4 -> 5 plus 50XP for 5 -> 6.

The second is by purchasing new abilities/spells/ect from the shop. The availability of various potential purchases depends upon in game events, previous purchases, and occasional the level of existing abilities/spells/ect.
Stats

Health:
Health represents how much damage Nepgear's body can take before she suffers Core Breach and dies. Nepgear starts with 100 hp before modifiers are applied.

Currently there is only one known modifier for Health:
  1. Core Containment which adds 50 hp per level.

Base Damage:
Base damage represents how much damage Nepgear does with her Purifier Beam and Panzer Blade. Nepgear starts with 10 damage before modifiers are applied.

Currently there are three known modifiers for Base Damage:
  1. Purifier Beam which adds a 1.5x multiplier to Base Damage with each Level after the first.
  2. Beam Extension which added a flat 2x multiplier to Base Damage on purchase.
  3. Sword Skill which currently applies a -25% modifier in close range combat.
Base Resilience:
Base Resilience is the first layer of damage reduction applied to incoming damage and works by reducing incoming damage by it's value. Nepgear starts with 5 resilience before modifiers are applied.

Currently there is only one known modifier for Base Resilience:
  1. Armored Core: [Rank] which adds [Variable] resilience per level.
    1. The value of [Variable] depends upon the current [Rank] with Iron having a [Variable] of 10, Steel a [Variable] of 20, and Mythril a [Variable] of 30.
Magic Modifier:
Magic Modifier determines how large the die rolled to supplement actions such as attacks or defense is. Nepgear starts with a Magic Modifier of 10 before modifiers are applied.

Currently there is only one known modifier for Magic Modifier:
  1. Purifier Beam which adds 5 per level after the first.
Spells

Celestial Severance:
Celestial Severance extends our swing arc allowing us to strike everything in that arc out to a distance of 50 meters.

It's Base Damage follows the formula:
25 * 2^[Level]
or put simply it starts at 50 and doubles with each additional level.

It's Magic Modifier follows the formula:
25 + [Level] * 25
or put simply it starts at 50 and increases by 25 with each additional level.

Starshine:
Starshine sprays dozens of homing lasers from the end of Purifier Beam. This is treated as fours simultaneous attacks.

It's Base Damage appears to follow the formula:
80 * 1.25^[Level]
Abilities

Flight:
Flight allows Nepgear to fly.

Her flight speed follows the formula:
[Level] * 10 - 10

Armored Core: [Rank]:
In addition to the modifier to Base Resilience Armored Core applies a second layer of damage reduction, applied after Base Resilience. Any attack less then [Percentage]% of Nepgear's health is automatically negated and any attack greater then [Percentage]% of Nepgear's health is reduced by [Percentage]%.

[Percentage] is determined by the current [Rank] of Armored Core. Iron gave a [Percentage] of 5%, Steel a [Percentage] of 25%, and Mythril a [Percentage] of 50%. There is no clear formula for what further ranks will provide.
Battle System
The Battle system works off narrative flow and several 'soft' mechanics.

Turns:

When battle starts, initiative goes to whatever group has the greatest call to surprise: for example if your characters bursts through the wall and starts shooting everything in sight, you get initiative. Or if a demon bursts through a wall and tackles you as, it gets initiative.

So on.

If neither side has a lead on surprise, then it boils down to relevance to the story. As Main Character, Anastasia will always have initiative in an open battle, regardless of speed. After she goes, then whoever has greater narrative importance to the story goes next. For example Rei Mitsubishi (Goddess Gold) has more narrative importance than someone like Carnage. Thus, Rei goes before Carnage. If two individuals have the same narrative importance then whoever has more attacks per turn goes.

Due to this mechanic, Mooks always go last. Always. Unless they get the jump on you and you fail your perception check.

Automatic Combat Actions:

These are actions taken by characters that follow a 'common sense list'. For example, you see someone leaping at you with a giant sword your instinct would be to dodge. If actually dodging a blow fits into the narrative flow, the character will dodge it. For example, your standing in the middle of a street with a tank flying through the air at you: you'll leap out of the way. The reverse also holds true: If your laying in the middle of the road because of something and you see the same tank, your kinda fucked.

If you're in a fight and a grenade lands at our feet, you'll try to leap away if possible, a sword is coming at you, you'd try to dodge it, and so on.

In-Combat Roll Modifiers:

These are put in place when the actions you'd take from the previous section come up short due to circumstances. For example, the first story post had you trying to dodge an attack, but due to unfamiliarity you botch it and got whacked. If an action is attempted but fails, it will lead to a modifier being added to the calculations depending on how close you were to pulling it off, or how much of a bad idea it was at the time. For example: dodging a sword, just to leap into a hammer would lead to extra damage from the hammer. Trying to dodge the flying tank example from earlier, but tripping due to uneven terrain would still reduce the damage somewhat.

This can also lead to bad-luck ends like tripping while trying to dodge a sword strike, and your neck falling into the path of the blade. Poor Nepgear is one head shorter, and you'd need to vote again.

Affinity Interactions:

This is a lot more straight forward and hard-form. Specific Affinities will lead to extra or reduced damage from another Affinity. A good example will be between Purity and Horror: Purity as an affinity causes extra damage to 'evil' things like zombies, demons, and eldritch omfgwhatisthatthing type creatures. Basic affinities from these are things like 'Blood' and 'Chaos'. Purity will do minor bonus damage to either of these as a simple matter of fact. The deeper into the 'Dark' affinities one goes though, the more damage Purity will exact from it's target. The reverse is also true though, as 'Corruptive' affinities (Slaughter and Evil being two of them) will do more damage to Purity the higher they are.

Other affinities also have cross-countering of each other, or a resistance to a massive boost given. For Example: Divinity gets a bonus damage count against nearly everything. But Myth, Legend, and Epic affinities get varying levels of durability when clashing against it. But these tend to be mostly rare cases.

Born with a power beyond all others they swore to each other to become legends.

To uphold all they held dear and to keep it safe... But it was not meant to be.

For you see...

One grew disillusioned with the bloodshed. She turned away, leaving on her own journey.

Two fell to the Darkness they sought to defeat. Their desires lost to the Light.

After the Unification Crusade dissolved the world's countries me and Jess got into High-school. Turned seventeen when the first Demons attacked openly and the Akashic Pillar joined the Unified Light. Graduation day, my town was attacked by some Dark Lord looking to make a quick name for himself before the Second Fall. Jess was at her boyfriend's place when it happened. Brilliant way to find out she was actually a doppelganger hunting for Magical Girls hiding among the student populous. My magic woke up and burned the entire school down to the ground. Started checking out magic books from the library shortly there after, and not much longer before I found my self signing up with the Counter Force to fight the good fight. Got a little awkward when I also found out my girlfriend - the one selling the love potions in the first place - was actually a succubus. We've been thinking of marrying after my time's up."

The instant you knew the shit had hit the fan was when what was distinctly the roof of your house landed on the track field and spectacularly crushed the gym teacher and half your class. You survived the opening attack because you had been tripped by the spoiled rich kid that had just been impaled by flying debris. You huddle under her corpse just long enough to watch the giant... thing plow through the main school building.

Resembling liquid flesh, the giant plows through stone and mortar like it was made from toothpicks and sheet paper. Screams filter through the air as you watch the beast suddenly inhale what looked to be the entire student body. Blood fountains from the gaping maw as your survival instincts finally stop gibbering in terror and you scramble to your feet and sprint for your life. You ignore the gore raining down around you, instead focusing solely on the little voice in your head screaming at you to get the fuck out of dodge!

You manage to make it to what's left of the school fence and out into the street filled with corpses before the monstrosity realizes you're on the run.

"▂▂▂▂▃▃▃▃▄▄▄▄▅▅▅▅▅▅!"

The sound hurts your ears. As in literally, physically hurts your ears. You feel a wet sensation drip down the sides of our head as you continue to sprint away from the titanic beast. Lines flash across your sight as the pain you can't feel tries to rob you of consciousness. Adrenaline is all that stands between you and a sudden and brutal death.

The beast plows through everything to get to you. Buildings, reduced to rubble, vehicles smashed like tin cans. You can hear the screams of the poor souls it had consumed, echoing from it's body as it chases you, but somehow you manage to ignore them. To focus on escape-

"Get down!"

Instinct screams to trust the voice and you dive. You land heavily. Chin cracking against the pavement and consciousness swimming for a moment, but the move saves you. A hair-thin tendril of mass swings over your head, slicing through everything in it's path. A light pole falls to the ground in front of you as you roll over, and the sight of your savior greets your eyes.

She's not even half your age. Painfully obvious, the girl isn't even nine yet. Frilly pink tutu, with glittery knee-high boots, and a heart-tipped wand in hand she's the epitome of 'cute little magical princess'. Her beautiful red hair is done up in twin pig tails with a sparkling tiara adorning her forehead with a shining sapphire placed perfectly in the middle.

For a moment. You sit there and gape. Poor girl doesn't even last a second.

"I'm Magical Girl Candy Heart! The slaughter of innocents is something that I cannot abide by! And in the name of Love and Life! I will- Gaaaahhh!!!"

A tendril snaps out from the beast in the middle of her introductory speech, wrapping around her ankle in an instant. "▂▂▃▃▄▄▅▅!" Lifting her up into the air the beast roars again. This time part of the pain hits you through the adrenaline induced haze, but it fail to drown out the girl's shouts.

"H-hey! What do you think you're doing? Put me down! Hey!"

A ripple along the tendril holding her. A wave in the flesh like someone snapped the end of a tied down rope...

"AaaaaaaaaAAAAAAHHHHHHH-" *CRUNCH*

Blood spatters you, and you flinch. The kid is driven into the ground inches from you. The concrete of the sidewalk cracks under the blow. Your surprise and hope breaks into mute horror at the same time her face meats the pavement.

Her hand twitches. She's still alive.

Pure reflex begins to move you to try and free her from the tendril still wrapped around her leg, but it's too late.

More ripples travel down the length of the tendril, snapping the girl violently into the air before immediately slamming her into the ground again...

Then again...

And again...

And again...

Four times the monster slams the child into the ground. Blood covers you, and you taste some of the liquid that splashed into your mouth. Viscera and pieces of bone are mixed in with the mess. Your hand hangs limply in the air as the tendril lifts her one last time. A squelching sound, as fragments of what's left of the road are torn from where they impaled her. She rotates slightly in the air, giving you full view of her brutalized body.

A tear streams from her remaining eye. You gasp, and the beast reacts: a maw opens up, and a final tendril lashes out, to wrap around the girl's neck. You can see saw-like teeth lining it's gullet.

"Run..." The girl's last plea is barely a whisper, before the tendril retracts as suddenly as it had appeared...

And drags her head-first down the thing's throat. She has no more blood left to spill as she's torn apart on the way down to it's stomach.

You sit there stunned, as the beast enjoys its most recent meal.

Then something snaps.

The world turns red and you let out your own blood curdling scream! But instead of horror, or even fear, what come out of it is rage.

A red hot RAGE. The world parts. A pillar of light engulfs you as part of the sky seems to almost crack.

The light starts red, then turns white. Before fading to purple. Power wraps around you as you feel your mortality almost melt off you.

"KNEEL IN THE DARKNESS, AND BURN IN THE LIGHT! I AM MAGICAL GIRL SOLID CORE!"

Your school uniform literally disintegrates and is replaced by a form-fitting white armor. But it doesn't stop there. You feel wings of energy burst from your back as a weapon form in your hand. It resembles a hand-held beam cannon with an energy blade mounted to the underside.

The change happens between breaths.

Pure rage guides your hand as power floods into your weapon. The beast lunges at you as you pull the trigger.

(Purifier Beam: +10 base damage, +4 dice, +5 RAGE = 19 total damage
Spawn of Mayhem: +50 Base Resilience, -10 Weak to Purification Effects, no dice roll due to focus = 40 Total damage reduction

Spawn of Mayhem Health: 5000 - 0 = 5000)

The beam that comes from the weapon is hilariously anti-climactic compared to the power your transformation released. Barely the width of your torso, it spears at the raging monstrosity and burns an even smaller hole clear through it, but the damage doesn't even seem to register on the creature.

"Gah-" A vague instinct you never had before causes you to move. But the unfamiliarity leads to hesitation, turning what would have been a leaping dodge into a stumble to the side. It costs you, and you fail to completely avoid the wall of flesh that swings at you. Enough power to pulverize a brick wall hits you full on and you feel your arm dislocate as the limb tears through an air-thin golden barrier that flashed into existence for less then a second. "-Urk" you're flung over two blocks with enough force to shear off the top of a parked car with impact alone.

(Solid Core: +5 Base Resilience, +7 Dice, +2 Dodge Attempt, +0 ??? = 14 Damage Reduction
Spawn of Mayhem: +100 Base Damage, no dice bonus, -70 Not really trying to kill you yet = 30 Total Damage
Parked Car: +5 death on impact = 5 total damage

Magical Girl Solid Core Health: 100 - 21 = 79)

You gasp from your position on the ground where you landed. The pain is new. Your average life meant that you never really experienced this kind of pain before. The agony is stifling.

You force yourself to your feet as the beast moves again. You're barely to your knees before it reaches you. But your saved yet again!

This time? A tank literally bursts out of a wall and rams the sonuvabitch!

The half-formed roar turns into a squeal of surprise as the silver-lined front edge of the tank hit its head on!

(Templar Anti-Demon Tank: +25 Base Damage, +22 Dice, +15 Ramming Speed = 62 Total Damage
Spawn of Mayhem: +50 Base resilience, no dice bonus, +10 Solid Wall, -25 Blessed Silver = 35 Damage Reduction

Spawn of Mayhem Health: 5000 - 27 = 4973)

The damage is negligible. But the real assault from the tank isn't so easily shrugged off. The turret rotates with speed, pointing it's three nozzles straight at the beast and unleashing an inferno!

(Templar Anti-Demon Tank: +25 Base Damage, +39 Dice, +50 Blessed Napalm = 109 Total Damage
Spawn of Mayhem: +50 Base Resilience, no dice bonus, -25 Weakness to Holy Napalm = 25 Damage Reduction

Spawn of Mayhem Health: 4973 - 84 = 4889)

The fire is almost white in it's brightness, but the blue is easily identifiable as the inferno washes over the creature. It squeals in agony as the fire burns away at it. It a desperate bid to get away, the beast lashes out with it's tendrils, trying to push it's attacker away-

(Spawn of Mayhem: +100 base damage, no dice, +15 Desperation = 115 Total Damage
Templar AD Tank: +100 Base Resilience, -25 Covering You = 75 Damage Reduction

Templar AD Tank Health: 1000 - 40 = 960)

The blow dents the armor significantly, but fails to pierce it. Instead the blow simply rocks the tank enough to allow the creature to retract the piece of itself that had been under it's silver-lined treads in order to quickly retreat. The breath of air this allows you, gives a chance to realize that you had just been saved by what is likely the Counter Force. Humanity's answer to the Forces of Darkness.

And the premiere fighting force of the Forces of Light.

Armed with weapons blessed by the clergy of religions around the world and backed by the most advanced technology that Humans could bring to bear against their extra-dimensional foes, they could go toe to toe with the nastiest monsters in the cosmos.

And when something came along that they couldn't fight, they had...

The sound of metal boots on cement breaks into your thoughts. As you turn a new sight greets you.

Clad in black cloth, and draped in resplendent golden armor your ultimate savior stands before you.

"Considering you only just awoke your powers, the fact you're still alive is rather impressive."

Magical Girl Goddess Gold.

The strongest Magical Girl to ever exist, and quiet possibly the sole reason that the Unified Darkness has yet to simply attempt to drown Earth in unending waves of Demons. She represented pure, unrefined, power.

Her mere presence is almost enough to crush you like a bug.

"Don't worry." Her sudden grin is smug. "You're safe now, and this thing isn't going to get far."

She steps past you, and just like that, the air seems to forget it's desire to crush you.

"Now let's see." You look past her to where the Tank that had saved you is now fighting the beast with another two having joined it, along with what looks like a small platoon of soldiers.

One of the tanks spews fire at the creature, but in the open it is nimble enough to flow out of the way, and the bullets from the infantry seems to simply be pissing it off. Punctuating this fact, the beast takes another shot at the tank it had damaged earlier, but this time throwing it's all behind the attack!

(Spawn of Mayhem: +500 Base Damage, +76 Dice, +25 RAGE = 601 Total Damage
Templar AD Tank: +100 base resilience, no dice bonus, -10 Previous damage = 90 Damage Reduction

Templar AD Tank Health: 960 - 511 = 449)

The blow shears through armor and pierces deep into the machine. A shout, screams, and something gives.

(Templar AD Tank Critical Failure: +250 Base Damage, +225 Remaining Health, +50 Blessed Napalm = 525 Total Damage
Templar AD Tank: +100 base Resilience, no dice bonus, -50 Previous Damage = 50 Damage Reduction
Spawn of Mayhem: +50 Base resilience, no dice bonus, -75 Holy Stuff Blowing Up = +25 Bonus Damage

Templar AD Tank Health: 449 - 475 = -26 (No survivors)
Spawn of Mayhem Health: 4889 - 550 = 4339)

The blast vaporizes the tentacle that had impaled the tank. Flame and fire vomits out, and liquid napalm is spewed everywhere. The beast screams in agony as the death curse of the machine reaps more damage than any hit before had managed. But you knew that the soldiers in the tank couldn't have survived the furnace.

"That's enough of that." Goddess Gold's voice in enough to halt the battle in it's tracks. Soldiers scramble aside as she walks forward and the beast suddenly begins to back off. It knows what's coming. "It's about time you go back to the pits from where you came. Chains of the Earth."

Golden links hiss through the air. And in the blink of an eye, the creature that once seemed unstoppable is rendered inert. It's almost liquid form is rendered immutable by the Chain's powers. And as it struggles Goddess Gold rears back her hand... and power floods into the space next to it.

"It's past over. Oblivion Awaits!" What comes next is almost indescribable.

(Goddess Gold: +10,000,000 Base Damage, Dice Rolls Negated, -9,950,000 Trying not to wipe out the Earth = 50,000 Base Damage
Spawn of Mayhem: +100 Base Resilience, -1000 Chains of the Earth, Dice Rolls Negated, +2000 Highly Resilient to Annihilation Magic = 1,100 Damage Reduction

Spawn of Mayhem Health: 4339 - 48,900 = -44,561)

Red and Black light. The shockwave from the attack's release is nearly enough to send you flying on it's own. For the beast?

It doesn't even have the chance to scream. The wave of erasure doesn't even slow as it sweeps over it. And just like that, the nightmare is over and silence is all there is...

-/Line Break Identified\-

You sit on the curb across the street from what was once your house. The crater is all that's left of it. You had lived alone with your elder sister in the house, but you knew she hadn't survived. The leg sticking out from beneath the crushed pickup truck with her favorite keychain hanging out of the only visible pocket was all you needed to know the truth of that.

Your listless melancholy is interrupted by a beautiful blond sitting down next to you. Her presence, though muted, tells you that this is Goddess Gold without her armor. She wears a simple white shirt with basic blue jeans, but she somehow manages to make them seem like the raiment's of Queen Elizabeth herself simply by wearing them.

You're simply clad in your ruined school uniform.

"You alright kid?" Her question is as calm and collected as if she was talking about the weather. Or had just erased a High-End Demon with a fraction of her power.

It was more than a little unnerving.

"I... When I woke up this morning all I was looking forward to today was just another day in school. I was in the middle of gym class when... this." You wave weakly at the carnage around you. "And now... Everyone I've ever known or loved is dead and I'm apparently a Magical Girl? How the Fuck does that work?"

A CF Rescue team transport rolls slowly past you, the two guards several feet away waving them on past, making sure that the young woman sitting next to you isn't disturbed. Said girl merely leans back against the flipped sedan behind you.

"It's called Fate being a bitch." You blink and look at her. She's grinning at you from where she lay, "Fate's a bitch, Destiny is a Whore, and poor Karma gets blamed for their damn antics while simply trying to do her job. This? This isn't Karma. This is Fate being an outright bitch. Bad luck simply decided it's going to be you."

Your not sure if you should be insulted by that or not.

"Shit like this happens every day around the world. Best you can do, is simply roll with the punches and wait for the chance to hit back. Roughly six out of seven Newly Minted Magical Girls tend to try going off on their own right after awakening their power. Half tend to die. Most of the rest join up with a sponsor, but every now and then, one keeps independent and makes it big. Like Magical Girl Red Rose."

You knew her. She was officially the tenth strongest Magical Girl alive. And the Second Strongest Magical Girl that fought for the Forces of Light.

She had no official backing from any of the Light Factions, but was Directly responsible for the deaths of not one, not even two, but a whole three Lords of Darkness in open combat. And she didn't even have any legitimate combat spells save possibly one confirmed.

"Anyway, the CF are almost done here, so I'm leaving soon... -ish. I was going to ask you if you felt like joining up with the Counter Force directly, or if you were planning on trying to go at it solo."

You blink. To be honest, you hadn't really thought about it at all. More focused on the fact your everything had jut been wiped off the face of the map...

But... You were a Magical Girl now! You remembered all the news articles on Magic Life Today, but you had never really thought much about it, believing yourself to be just another girl!

You could go with the Government and get special Training, even funding... but that faced the fact you'd forever be compared to the other magical girls that already worked for the Counter Force. Or you could run the risk of going at it alone. You'd have a chance to make a name for yourself without having to worry about being stuck under someone else's shadow but...

Just looking around and the memory of Candy Heart is all that is needed to point out what would be the most likely outcome of that situation.

What to do?

[]Go with Goddess Gold and join the Counter Force. The safety is too enticing to pass up, and you're not sure if you can face this without some kind of support.

A/N: I'll write up everything you unlocked before next update. You'll find it all on the first page.

You sit there for a time. Simply staring at the remains of your home as you chew over the older Magical Girl's question.

While the possible fame of going at it alone was nice... The thought of dying lost and alone against the Unified Darkness terrified you.

"I'll come with." Your answer has a note of finality to it as it's spoken. And you acknowledge that your previous life is now over. And with it, Goddess Gold sits up from her position and shoves her grinning face into your line of sight. You flinch at the sudden intrusion with a squeak.

"Good choice! And don't worry! We'll be the... best of friends."

Suddenly her grin seems a lot more vicious then it was a few moments ago. You're not sure if you should be unsettled by that or rethinking the choice. She doesn't give you much time to ponder if you screwed up or not.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"Here: keep ahold of this also. It's known as a Data Mine. And as far as you're concerned, it's your new best friend. It has a universal net-connection that'll let you connect to the Dim-Net damn near anywhere. I've already set it up to have you as a user, but you'll have to add a password yourself later once your settled in. You'll be able to look up topics on the Akashic Record on the fly as well as keep a ton of personal notes. Don't lose it!"

The small mechanical object is dropped atop of the pile of clothes and other items you are desperately trying not to drop as Rei Mitsubishi, also known to you as Golden Goddess, practically drags you through North America's central Counter Force base. It is wide open, with large areas between each building. You had a feeling that you would learn why the base was built this way later. Instead you were more focused on the piles of stuff Rei was dragging you around to collect for your future stay on the base.

"You'll be in barracks Ten with your squad. Each magical girl is given a team of five soldiers to help watch her back when out in the field. Training starts tomorrow at Four A.M. sharp, understood?" You don't even get a chance to respond before she knocks open a door and pushes you in. "Standard Uniform for Magical Girls when not transformed are the plug-suits I gave you back at the shop. If you're on duty, you wear those. Unless you get strong enough that no one feels like trying to argue with you, but that might be a while. So when you get up tomorrow, wash up quickly and put one on. Once you do that, you'll gather with your team right outside your Barracks where I'll pick you up and bring you to Power Studies. There we'll tinker around with your powers for a bit before moving on to training with your team."

She comes to a stop in front of an empty bunk, hidden away slightly into the wall of the bed area.

"Now. Originally the plan was for new Magical Girls to undergo complete military training, but that got vetoed by a lot of important big-wigs whose daughters are Magical Girls. Instead you'll be given a few weeks mandatory basic before being allowed into the field with heavy supervision. It'll be focused around initial physical conditioning, teamwork, and teaching you basic command structure. If you're going to be part of the Counter Force these three things are absolutely required. Despite the moaning and groaning of military commanders everywhere."

You nod jerkily as you place the pile of... stuff, that Rei had helped you gather onto the bunk. Alongside the Data Mine that she had given you, there were five 'plug-suits' that were better described as skin-tight full body leotards that adjusted automatically to your shape, a set of augmented-reality shades that you could hook to your Data Mine to use it hands-free, a base ID-Card that she had clipped to your hair, and left to dangle in full view of everyone that so much as glanced at you, along with a wide variety of other miscellaneous items. Some of which you failed to catch their purpose as they were tossed at you. "Umm... Rei... Ma'am?" You stutter as you release your load. "N-not to sound ungrateful o-or anything... but..."

You trail off, unsure how to continue. But you couldn't help but feel it was a valid question.

Right after you agreed to join the Counter Force, Rei told you her name - a secret many civilian throughout the Unified Light, and god knows how many individuals from the Unified Darkness, would literally murder and rape for - then promptly drug you almost by the hand back to the base from which she staged her heroics. From there she towed you around the selfsame base, collecting essentials -and possible essentials- as well as going through the trouble of planning out your first few days...

All in all, it was almost line she had claimed you as a...

"You're my pet."

Your thoughts come screeching to a dead halt at her declaration. And in the sudden silence she smiles viciously at you, almost like she was daring you to say otherwise.

"I-I... what?" Sadly, in your current state, you weren't capable of doing much of anything besides stuttering and gaping like a fish.

Rei turns away, crossing one arm beneath her breasts and using the free hand to point into the air. "Magical Girl Training is done by Apprenticeship. I haven't had any of my own for a while, and you impressed me by surviving alone against a Spawn of Mayhem as long as you did. So you're mine. And there's nothing you can do about it." She struts away towards the door, leaving you gaping like a fish after her.

"I really should have struck out alone."

Four hours later found you exploring the rather extensive storage space around your bed. Several hidden drawers that you quickly commandeered for your clothes, or what was left of them, along with a small tv that was connected to a video call function, and a small ledge where you put the only picture of you and your sister you had left.

From there you found the shared showers and washed off the dried blood that had been stuck with you ever since your roof killed your class. You manage to fight a 'uniform' on just before the door to the barracks opens and admits the five individuals into the dorm. The sudden entrance has you spinning around with a squeak, as you try to cover your self.

The stupid suit felt about as revealing as it got.

The soldiers - for they were obviously soldiers - stopped the same time you had spun around.

From left to right there were four men and a woman. With the woman in front, with the guys trailing behind her in what appeared to be oldest to youngest. Or at least that's what it looked like.

"Umm... hi?"

Your question is trailed, again, by silence for roughly a minute before the woman speaks.

"They forgot to tell you that your perfectly allowed to put something on over that, didn't they?"

Your resultant Blush is atomic.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

You huddle dejectedly over your re-heated steak and bean soup in the cafeteria at dinner time. The soldiers that are apparently your team deign to allow you to wallow in your embarrassment in quiet solitude as they eat their own food.

The woman, her name Jessica Robert, was -amazingly enough- the tallest of the group by a whole three centimeters. And being a whole 190 centimeters, she was a very tall woman, dwarfing your 167 with ease. She was slim, with no noticeable features. Her eyes were brown, and her hair was a dark blonde.

The eldest, and team leader, was her brother, James Robert. At 187 he was the second tallest, with the same hair and eye color as his sister. The difference, was where she was slim, he was huge. His arms alone looked like he was probably able to pick you up and toss you across the room with little effort. But he was a surprisingly nice guy with a significant temper to match.

The third eldest, and third tallest, Samael Balier, was about as average as average could be. Average height, average hair color, average eye color... The outstanding aspect for him was that he was missing an eye. Complete with eye patch. When you began to form a question he answered with, "High School love potion incident. And that's all I'm going to say on the matter." You dropped it there.

Fourth Eldest, and shortest, was Michael Rodriguez, who had a seemingly stereotypical Mexican-origin name. He was also dark skinned and had a thing for milkshakes. And a bad habit of goading Jessica into cracking jokes that made no sense to you.

And last but not least, was the unfortunately named Richard Nixon. Apparently his father had a sick sense of humor. Made even worse because he was black haired and green eyed. This sadly caused him to look a lot like the deceased American president.

A short round of introductions had you learning each of their names and a few bits of information that was better left unsaid, while revealing that you were the brand new Magical Girl that had been tacked onto their team literally less than an hour ago and dropped, a bit confused, into their laps.

"Sorry for the need to babysit me."

The light conversation sputters out at your apology. The soldiers that you've barely just met blinking in surprise before turning to you with various expressions of curiosity. But your too lost in your thoughts of your sister to really register any of them.

"I know... I know that there are soldiers on the front lines right now dying, fighting against the Unified Darkness... and... you're all stuck here babysitting a barely awoken Magical Girl that doesn't even have a clue how her power are supposed to work. So... sorry."

You mope for a moment longer before Mike slaps your shoulder, catching your attention. "Don't worry about it kid. Not sure about these morons, but I'm kinda happy to be here. Especially if it means I get to look after one of you girls. I was saved by a Mahou Sojou our on the front once, y'know?" You blink at the Japanese name for Magical Girl as Michael grins. "Never told any of you, but a few months ago, my platoon was pinned down by a bunch of Demons with those huge arbalests. Bastards were picking us off one at a time, and we were certain we were going to all die. But then, right out of nowhere a fucking energy wave blows a group of them to pieces. The chaos allowed us to break off and regroup enough to fallback. Learned a while later that her name was Magical Girl Judgement Core. Had this cannon twice her size, and packed a punch bigger than most tanks we have on the front. So, if getting recalled to Earth to babysit a newly minted MG, is needed, then I told them to sign me up. Keeping you alive long enough to get the experience that allows you to go out and save more shmucks like me? That's worth getting benched for."

Samael whistles at the sudden story. "Damn mate. I never got to get my but saved, but I did get a chance to see a few Magical Girls go at it. Personally got to see Red Rose go toe to toe with five Dark Magical Girls all at once. Seeing that? Now that was Epic."

"Nah ah! Pics or it didn't happen!"

"Don't believe me? Alright... here ya go." The man pulls out a Data Mine, bringing up pictures of the fight he witnessed...

And holy hell was it a fight. Blurs of movement barely captured by the digital camera built into the Data Mine clashed in the still. The ground looked to be disintegrated around them as they fought, with stones floating in the air to be sliced apart. You couldn't make out individual fighters from the chaotic mess... but you could tell from the looks on the soldiers faces that this was what a high-level Magical Girl fight looked like from their perspective.

"Holy shit. Just five? I swear I count at least six blurs here."

"Nah, one was an illusionist. The extra blur is her double."

"How did you get so close?"

"I was huddled in a fox hole and the fight migrated over to me. Survived because they were more focused on each other than possible soldiers ducking into the dirt to avoid getting splattered."

It was a truly impressive image. With the soldiers pointing out barely-there details, even your own untrained eye was able to make sense of at least some of what it was showing. Five against one, and Red Rose obviously dominated the fight.

A saying you heard once came to mind: the difference in strength at the top, mattered only to those at the top.

You had a long way to go if you were to make it to that level.

"So kid. What are you going to do now?"

James' question reaches you as you huddle in your bunk, staring at the picture of you and your sister. The peaceful scene was captured only a mere two years ago. She had just turned eighteen, and your mother had kicked the both of you out... It hadn't been a happy year, but somehow, she had found a way to make it all better. A way to prove to you that the world wasn't ending, and that the day after would be better than today. And at the time, you had somehow convinced yourself that life would be as close to perfect as it could get from then on out.

And now she was dead.

"I don't know. My sis... she... what am I supposed to do? Everyone's been so helpful but... I still don't know what I'm supposed to do next! I'm so lost right now that..." You half gasp, half sob, as you bury your face into your knees, as you pull your legs close. "I'm so scared! What do I do James? I'm so confused!"

James sighs as you curl even tighter into your little ball. And for a moment, sat in silence. "I honestly don't know kid." You manage to stifle your sobs and look at him: he's cleaning a handgun, frowning in thought. "I joined the C-Force when a fight between them and a Hell attack force swept through my neighborhood. Got to watch my girlfriend get raped and chopped to bits right on front of me. After it was all over and I was saved, I decided that I'd join up and keep something like that from ever happening again. And here I am."

From there, silence creeps in. But... its a slightly more comfortable silence of understanding. The two of you sit there for several more minutes as James finishes cleaning his gun and puts it away.

"Hey, James?"

"Hm?"

"Thanks."

"No problem kid." He kills the light and you go to bed earlier than everyone else, but not as early as you originally planned.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Flashes. Images. A world you've never seen.

A flash from a sword. An image imposes itself: a woman with angelic wings, facing down a man with a massive sword.

Another flash. A wave of golden light facing down a wave of black. Blood flies.

"Hey sis! Look at me!"

"Careful Ana! You know climbing trees, is dangerous."

"I know N▄▄▄▄▄▄."

Static. A scream.

You see your sister's cold corpse. Crushed by the nightmare beast. She smiles at you...

"Don't worry. It doesn't hurt at all..." A tendril of flesh grows from the stump of an arm. "Won't you join me? ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄?"

You wake screaming at four in the morning as Jessica's alarm goes off with a loud bang, waking everyone instantly.

No one is groggy when Rei comes to collect you.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"You wearing your skin suit?" When you nod at Rei she smirks at you, "Good. Strip down to it."

"Eh?" Your voice is reduced to a squeak. "S-s-s-s-strip?!"

As if to answer, Rei promptly shucks her jacket and loose pants to reveal a bright yellow skin suit of her own. "Of course. They're going to be using the suit to attach a number of Leeds to you in order to measure your Quantum Imprint to figure out what your magical affinities are. As varied as magic is, there are some constants that can be identified. Otherwise the other Factions wouldn't have gotten as good with it as they have. I'll be providing demonstration."

And probably to show off, a traitorous little voice in your head muttered to you. She was definitely far more developed than you, and completely lacked any shame of that fact. You studiously ignored the little pang of jealousy that shot through the back of your head as you walked out of the changing room behind her and into the main testing chamber.

The room itself was actually rather small. Runic arrays covered the walls, with lines of English text forming circles in the center of the room. Among these arrays stood a small handful of scientists, thankfully all women, who were prepping a number of cords that stretched off into the wall to some hidden machines.

"As you know," Rei began as the scientists waved you over, "Humans have only recently confirmed Magic's existence. This means that despite what they're teaching in schools now a days, we know very little of what it's truly capable of. But the Fairies and False Heaven have generously donated some of the few universal thing they know about magic to aide in our own research.

"The first thing is that excepting a few specific details, all magic is customized to an individual species. One of those universal constants are Affinities. All the different groups of the Local Dimensional Cluster originally believed that there were only Elemental Affinities. And this was mostly true, until Humanity came into the picture and we introduced Conceptual Affinities."

A brief word to one of the scientists, and Rei stood in the middle of the room. From there, she raised her arms and the scientists began to attach Leeds to her. Since she was busy with that, a scientist standing off to the side picked up the explanation.

"All magical practitioners have a minimum of one Affinity. An Affinity denotes how their magic works. For example, someone has a Water Affinity: that means that person's magic is based around the manipulation of liquids and semi-solids. Or someone has a Summoning Affinity. That person's magic would be based around the summoning of different things to facilitate their magic. But I digress. The more Affinities someone has, the stronger they are. Or the stronger their potential. Someone with Two Affinities is considered a genius, while three would be normally reserved for the oldest of Practitioners. A Magical Girl though, is unique in that they all have a minimum of three Affinities. This chamber allows us to scan and identify those Affinities."

One of the scientists helping Rei called out, and you turn to her.

She stands, hands spread, in the middle of the room. Cords and thin cables stretch through the air to the walls like chains as she slowly opens her eyes... and you can feel her magic rise and travel down the false-restraints to the arrays around the room. Said marking begin to light up, one by one, until the entire room is bathed in a dull red color.

The English characters that surround her begin to move on their own. Each slowly rotates across the floor, lining up into three easily identifiable words that stick out in stark contrast to the jumbled lettering of the rest.

Rule
Annihilation
Epic

They mean nothing to you. But the scientists collective nod in satisfaction.

The one that had been explaining before starts up again, as the others begin to help Rei remove the Leeds. "Each Affinity represents something different. For example, Rei's Rule Affinity means that she grows stronger the more she believes she rules over. Her Annihilation Affinity grows stronger the more solidly she believes she can destroy something... But her Epic Affinity represents something else entirely." The last of the connections to Rei's skin suit are removed and you are beckoned forward.

With a gulp you do so. Self-consciously you hold your arms over your head, giving the techs room to work as the scientists continues her lecture. "The third Affinity of all Magical Girls we've been able to identify signifies their growth potential. It also has some other exotic effects we're still looking into such as Immunity to specific abilities for some reason but it isn't bearing as much fruit a we'd hope-"

"Doctor. You're rambling." Rei's grin is slightly amused as the scientist blushes. She quickly looks down at her clipboard to hide it, while the techs attach the last Leeds to you and guide your arms down so you don't accidentally dislodge any of them. From there, they immediately activate whatever mechanism that draws your power out for the magical array to analyze. The room lights up a light violet as the letters begin their crawl across the floor.

And just as quickly as it starts, it's over.

Purity
Faith
Divinity

You blink. "Are those normal?"

It's only afterwards that you realize that Rei Mitsubishi actually Squeed.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Your merely human teammates find you sitting in the cafeteria with a slightly shell-shocked expression plastered on your face.

"Damn kid. You look like you got goosed." When you fail to react to Michael's jab they share a look before Samael dumps his drink over your head.

"Pfft! H-hey! What was that for?" You squawk as Jessica passes you a few paper towels to clean up the resultant mess.

"Well, you were a little unresponsive there for a moment. So, we did what any good friend would do." You blush in embarrassment as they all sit down with some kind of breakfast. "We just got out of orientation for being your new teammates for the foreseeable future. How did testing go?"

You wad up the towels you just used and dump them onto Michael's plate - "Hey!" - before you respond, "Turns out I got three really rare Affinities. Two of witch have only ever been shared by four other Magical Girls ever. And the last happening only a handful of times in the past. So I got to watch the research team collectively flip their shit and got to sit through three hours of being poked by needles, while listening to my new mentor gloat over a phone. Apparently our first team practice is going to be against another Magical Girl. So yeah. Happy days."

"Huh. So we get the really rare Magical Girl that probably has some upper awesome prophecy about her floating around?" Michael scarfed down a hot dog. "I can dig it."

Jessica Rolls her eyes, "Yeah, just watch: most of us will probably wind up dead before she even learns it."

"Mou- lets not joke about that guys!" They just laugh at you.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

You stare at the person standing before you.

Right behind you Jessica slapping Samael is actually audible. Part of you is curious, while the rest of you fervently doesn't want to know why she felt the need.

So instead, you again focus on the very famous person right in front of you.

More specifically? Magical Girl Red Rose.

Her outfit looks like it's made of silk. Her dark purple hair is almost as entrancing as her blood-colored eyes. But the most distinguishing feature is the scent of blood.

A scent that you were very familiar with now. But was still unnerved by.

"This the kid?"

Her voice is rough. Almost scratchy.

"It is." Rei's voice is almost giddy as she confirms... something.

"She's cute. I'll give her that."

"Bitch. She's fucking adorable. And mine."

Now you're sure you were missing something.

"Don't you have enough stuff? I've never had the chance to equip a little sister before."

Wait... Oh no. Oh god no. Please-

"She's my pet. No little sister equipment for you."

Yup. It's happening. "Oh, come on... not again." Your whispered despair attracts the attention of Richard beside you. He leans over slightly as to not draw the attention of the now arguing Magical Girls.

"What's wrong?" You glare at him in an adorably cute way.

"A bad joke got out of hand years ago between my sister and her friends. It only lasted a few days but it ended with me getting the nickname 'Nepgear' and it never left! And at this rate it's going to come back and I'll never be rid of it!"

He smiles at you, "For what it's worth I think it's a brilliantly adorable name!" He says it loud enough to draw everyone's attention. Then tells Rei and Red Rose what you just told him.

Once Rei announced that your new name was 'Nepgear' you decided that you would leave the bastard to whatever fate the coming training had in store for him.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"Help!"

"Nepgear, help him!"

"Not until he apologizes!"

"If you don't help him we're going to lose!"

"We were going to lose anyway!"

"How do you know that?"

"Have you seen her throw those spears? I try going up there to help him, she's going to 'catch a sister' as Rei so eloquently put it!"

"You should still help him..."

"Not until he apologizes!"

"INCOMING!"

"For wh-OH SHI-!"

The explosion knocked you and the rest of your team out.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"Uhhgggg..." You moan softly into the cafeteria table. Red Rose had left shortly after the... training, you were hesitant to call it. Citing that she had to return to the front. Rei had then promptly hauled you and your team to a healer to get patched up and then led you all to the cafeteria.

Said woman was eating heartily of a steak that you hadn't even known the cafeteria served, grinning amusedly at your pained whimpers. "Don't worry. I've known several fliers over the years. A bit of practice and you'll be far more at home in the air than your performance just now." She ignores an incoherent moan from you and continues. "That beam cannon of yours is also rather impressive. It takes you too long to charge up right now, but once you can fix that little kink you should be good. And while I don't know what that little barrier trick of ours does, I have the feeling that it's important to something. I have you roughly a week before your ready for the front lines. In the mean time you should focus on improving what you got." She downs the last of the steak in one massive go, before polishing off the rest of her food. A deep drink later, she asks another question that floors you.

"Also, have you all decided a name for your squad yet? It's a bit of tradition amongst support teams for MGs across the front."

You blink. Really? It seemed a bit weird and really informal, even amongst the already-informal nature of your little 'posting' as it was. It seemed a bit too free-form for a military assignment.

"Why would they-"

Your half formed question is answered by Samael. "It has to do with morale. A Mahou Shojou is like a super soldier. Think Spartans from that old video game. When a MG's support units takes the field, it almost always means their MG is with them and out there as well. So, in order to differentiate them from other - regular - squads, they're given custom names. When really infamous ones show up, it tends to end with weak-willed enemies running in mass. So it's become a bit of tradition to name a MG's squad with something."

Huh. Interesting bit of trivia there.

"Anyway, you have the rest of the day to your selves. Tomorrow you'll be getting up with the rest of the soldiers at their usual times around Oh-Five-Hundred. So you'll be able to get a bit more sleep today then yesterday. If you need anything, I'll be near Barracks 23. I have some reading I need to catch up on." And with that Rei leaves you.

So, You think to yourself, now what?

You stare at the cup of orange juice in your hand for a moment. Name eh?

You were probably going to regret it but... "To Team GEAR." You raise you glass, holding it at eye level as the rest of your team looks at you. You stare at them resolutely while they process what you said. If you were going to be stuck with the damn nickname that spawned off your sister, then the rest of them could share the misery.

With a chuckle, Richard raised his own glass, "I can get behind that." And with that the dam broke. It took mere moments for the rest to raise their own glasses, and join in the toast, and with it, sealing their agreement to the team name.

"To Team GEAR!"

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

"So, what's everyone's plan for this afternoon? I'm going to be looking into how the front is going, just to keep an eye on how the war is." James says.

Jessica is first to respond, "I need to return a book to the library. I'll swing by there, then return to the barracks for some shut eye."

"Need to bring my equipment in for a few repairs from the training exercise today. Since someone left me hanging." Richard looks to you pointedly, and you frown at him. It's is own damn fault for causing the whole mess.

Michael and Samael both roll their eyes before announcing their own plans. "Sam needs to swing by the base store. He's running a bit low on supplies for his hobby and I'm going with to pick up some rubbing alcohol for my med kit."

They then all look at you in expectation. Plans? Hm... "I want to meet the other Magical Girls on the base. So I'll probably be wondering around."

James nods at that. "Understandable. If I remember correctly, there's only five on base right now. Including you, Goddess Gold, and Red Rose. The other two are Truth and... Life Drinker I think? I can't remember her name to save my life. Anyway, Truth is probably over with the Regular grunts giving out sword lessons, and Miss-Whose-Name-I-Can't-Remember, tends to hang around the helicopter pads with her pet. When your ready, we should all be done and get ready for another long day tomorrow."

You nod and thank him, as GEAR leaves the cafeteria, giving you a chance to hunt down the other two Magical Girls currently on base.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

First stop you make is at the Sword Fighting grounds: the sound of clashing metal fills the air as groups of infantry swing blades at one-another. Human soldiers held an advantage against the legions of demons that acted as the Unified Darkness' main attack forces, but that tended to hold only until they closed the range: a gun didn't do very good when your opponent was literally in your face, swinging a blade almost half your size at you.

So many soldiers had taken up some form of melee combat, the most popular being bayonets, with sword coming in a close second.

Jessica herself had a rapier that she carried with her, though you didn't know how good she was with it. Or how strong it was.

Towards the northern end of the base though, was a place set aside for soldiers to learn whatever melee weapon they chose, should they take one up. Red Rose was known to give combat lessons, as well as a number of other Melee-oriented magical girls. And instead of taking it as an insult, a lot of soldiers took them up on the offer.

The reason? A Demon Foot Soldier was almost twice as physically strong a baseline human. This meant that they could swing their steel swords with enough strength to dent the titanium armor that had become standard issue with each blow. So, in return, a Human had to be skilled enough with their chosen weapon to negate that strength advantage. And one of the best ways to do that was to fight someone with a similar power advantage that wasn't actively trying kill you.

Thus the lessons.

In the center of this training ground, roughly a dozen soldiers with various weapons surrounded a rather demonic looking girl.

Magical Girl Truth was a rather average MG, but was semi-famous for her love of training human soldiers. Her massive blade was known to be nearly indestructible and her armor, if it could be called that, was enough to repel small-arms fire. Her powers you didn't know, but it was a wide-spread fact that she had an aura that prevented people from lying when around her.

How it went about this wasn't disclosed, but it was known to effect literally everyone and everything. Even Demons couldn't escape the truth-causing effect, which had lead to more than one Dark General to be publicly executed during a fight by their lords. The most notable of which had been the Battle of Las Vegas, when a Dark Lord had invaded the famous city in order to use it as a staging ground for his invasion of the rest of the Earth. Truth and Red Rose had broken into their headquarters with about a half dozen other magical girls, and she had asked the present Dark Generals if they had truly served their lord with all their might.

When both of them said yes, she asked if their lord was in the room with them on reflex, and got both to say no. Considering the Dark Lord they were supposed to be serving was in the room with them it had led to a few moments of awkwardness that ended with the Lord killing his two generals and Red Rose killing him while he was indisposed.

Back at the training field though, Truth was swinging her sword with a single hand, sending the soldiers she was sparring with flying in groups of two or three a swing. The whole time she was doing this, she also taunted them with insults in Russian and Korean. Weather or not they even understood them was up for debate, but it motivated them enough to come at her again.

She sent them flying shortly thereafter.

"Halt! That's enough for now. You all look thoroughly abused right now." The soldiers stopped trying to fight again, some moaning in frustration, while others sighed in defeat. "You're all getting better. A bit more work on timing your attacks and I might have to start using both hands to keep up. Anyway, I'll let you all go for now so I can meet the new girl." She turned around, facing you directly as the soldiers picked themselves up off the ground. From where you stood, she was easily taller than you. Heck, she was almost as tall as Jessica really. "So... new girl eh? Red Rose has been ranting about how cute you are. And I have to say: Your definitely perfect little sister material. Wanna go home with me?"

"Eh?" That wasn't a question you were expecting. "Umm... Rei kinda already claimed me as hers?" Your not sure what else to say... but the pouting frown on what was definitely an evil-looking face was jarring as hell, "Umm... what exactly did you mean by that anyway?"

The pout doesn't go away, but she replies. And you quickly wish she hadn't: "I'm a bit of a sis-con. But none of my little sisters ever want to do anything with me."

Oh, you wonder why. Shell shocked, you thank your lucky stars that Truth had somewhere to be and didn't stick around much longer.

Trying to scrub the image of Truth 'glomping' you in the middle of the base, you half-stumble your way to the Air Field where they parked the helicopters.

Once there you're met with another shocking sight.

Namely: Magical Girl Carnage. Another relatively mediocre magical girl, but known as the mot psychotic fighter for the Unified Light. And number six on the Popularity Polls for MGs.

She was known for her love of battle, and the focus all of her powers had on it save for one: the ability to summon a powerful dragon.

The White Dragon wasn't a dragon in the true sense of the world, being a purely magical construct. But it had all the same strengths as the Dragons that roamed the Local Dimensional Cluster.

Power-wise, Carnage wasn't very notable in any aspect. Instead she excelled in wholesale slaughter of the forces of Darkness. One on one, she was hard to take down. One on a thousand, she was virtually unstoppable. And it was also thanks to her rather skewed personality that very few people actually interacted with her.

Why you were doing it was probably going to be up for debate for years to come.

"Oh? Someone has come looking for me? What does the little flower want?"

Her voice is husky and soft. The huge dragon behind her rests softly on the ground, cracking open an eye as you approach. Stopping barely five feet away, you sketch a jerky bow. "I- um... I'm the new girl. I was going around in hopes of meeting the other Magical Girls on base. I hope we can be friends..." The smell of blood is heavy around her. You can also smell a thick layer of soaps and perfumes, an obvious attempt to cover the smell of blood, but..

Carnage walks closer to you, bending over slightly in order to look you in the eye. The flower sprouting from her left smells slightly of decay and rot. But the perfume mostly masks it's smell, even at this range. "It's not often anyone chooses to seek me out. Even rarer one tries to befriend me. Considering most of them die." She smile would be kind if it wasn't for the hint of teeth. But... you could see a hint of sadness in her eye. "If you want to be friends, then fine. Come back here sometime after training and we can hang out. I'm not to be deployed again for another week." Her acceptance is surprising, and rather sudden.

And with that, she turns away from you, and promptly begins to ignore your existence.

Taking the dismissal for what it is, you promptly turn around and walk away your self. Doesn't seem like she was all that bad.

Didn't Michael and Samael both mention needing to stop by the base shop? If your timing was right, they would both still be there.

With that thought in mind, you meander over to the shop. It was situated in the north-eastern portion of the base. Slightly out of the way, and hidden behind the motor pool, it was the go-to location for soldiers that were off duty, but required extra non-issued supplies. It's selection was rather sparse and tended towards practitioners more than anything, but if you found yourself running low on something simple, it was the best place to go. But most specifically was the fact it tended more towards practitioner supplies that drew Michael and Samael both here.

"Hello?" Your voice cuts through the quiet shop; inside were only three people. The cashier and your two teammates.

Michael was going though the first aid supplies, while Samael was poking through the chalks and papers. You call drew the attention of the former while the latter continued his perusal. "Hmm? Oh, Nepgear. Need something from the shop? We're almost done here."

Your eyebrow twitches at the nickname, but you manage to not rise to it's invocation. "No, I finished meeting the other Magical Girls on base, and wanted to spend a bit of time with my teammates. We're supposed to be working together from now on and... well, I thought it'd be better to get to know one another."

"That's reasonable." Samael picks up his purchase and lugs a small pile to the cashier, who is watching the unfolding scene with amusement. "One of the best ways to improve teamwork is to simply know the people your working with. Well... Not sure about Mike over here, but I grew up in Texas. It used to be part of the United States before World War Three and Akasha took over. What do you know about practitioners?"

You blink at the sudden question, and as you think it over Samael pays for hi purchases, and moves aside for Michael to pay for his. "Not much, just what they teach in school. Just that they're Human magic users. Only one in a thousand Humans have the potential to become a practitioner, and only one in a thousand female practitioners have the potential to become a Magical Girl, and only if they awaken their powers before they turn eighteen. Past that... nothing really."

Samael nods to you, "Right. It's mostly because no one really knows much about how magic works, despite aid from the other factions of the Unified Light in figuring out how it all works. So far, as much as Human scientists can figure, Magic works differently for each species based solely on the collective belief that species has in regard to magic." With his bags in hand, and Michael finished with his own purchases, the three if you leave the store and begin the trek back to the barracks. "Humans believe magic can do pretty much anything. This gives us an advantage over the other species that don't hold that same belief. But it comes with the drawback that we also collectively believe that not everyone can do it, and that it' very complicated for those who can. Thus: practitioners. Humans that can utilize different styles of magic based on their own belief and understandings so long as it's complicated in some way. For example, I use a system I call 'Brand Craft'. It allows me to brand objects with special attributes to achieve a given effect. I'm little more than a hedge wizard though, I only got one real combat spell and it isn't that reliable to begin with. I stick to party favors."

Huh, that was actually rather interesting. "So... when did you awaken your powers?"

"That High School Love Potion Incident. Don't ask."

"Right."

Michael laughs. "I'm just a regular run of the mill human. Was born in northern California and raised on the road by my mom and dad. They ran a Housing business. Dad passed away from cancer, and mom retired to Europe. We keep in touch every now and then, but it' become a little sporadic ever since I joined the Counter Force."

You smile at him, but turn back to Samael, "What about you Sam? Any backstory to give up?"

"Careful with the fourth wall kid. And as a matter of fact, yes. Dad's a comedian in Florida and mom's a government accountant. Haven't spoke to either of them in years though, and my younger sister is a firefighter. Was damn proud of me when I joined up. Practices her own magic herself, since mom was an avid believer that magic was an inherited trait. Dad never cared enough to decide if it was or wasn't, so he just supported mother." He shrugged, and Michael clapped him on his back.

"Hey... what's your sister look like?"

"I'm not answering that on principle."

This time, when you wake up to Jessica's gunshot alarm clock you don't scream. Instead you sit there and stare at top of your little cubicle bunk in confusion.

"Hey, Nepgear! You alright?"

"I think I had a really lewd dream."

"Really? What was it about?"

"I'm a magical girl. How much eastern animation have you watched?"

"Forget I asked."

"Exactly."

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

On the third day of you being part of the Counter Force you and your team were brought straight to the word Fighting Grounds. Today's training was a one on one lesson between you and Red Rose, who had decided you needed a direct lesson in Magical Girl mechanics based on your horrific performance the previous day.

"Alright, everyone here that needs to be?" Red Rose has her spear impaled on the ground next to her as you and your team line up in front of her. "Good. Now, I'm going to be going over the basics with Nepgear here before we start the actual lesson. I want the rest of you to actually pay attention because knowing this stuff can save not only your own lives but Nepgear's here as well. Alright?"

"Ma'am!" Is your collective shout.

"Alright. Nepgear, step forward and we'll begin." With a nervous glance to your teammates - Jessica smiles encouragingly while Richard gives you a thumbs up - you step forward, clenching your hands behind your back. "Alright, Draw your weapon and get ready."

As you do as instructed, she kicks at her spear. The red blade tears through the solid concrete like mud and flips over her shoulder. Red Rose doesn't even glance at it as the weapon falls into her hand with practiced ease. In less than an eye blink her weapon is at the ready.

"Alright. Basic combat is simple. It boils down to speed and power. Of two individuals of equal skill whoever hits harder tends to win, unless the other is fast enough to negate that strength advantage. Being capable of knocking someone out in a single blow is meaningless unless you can hit them."

(Power and Speed is translated into combat numbers as 'Base Damage' and 'Attacks Per Turn'.

Purifier Beam: +10 base damage, +4 dice, +5 RAGE = 19 total damage)

"The faster individual can get more hits in than the other, and sometimes that makes all the difference."

(Attacks Per Turn are the number of offensive actions a character can take in a single combat turn. This means a 'weaker' character can still cause more damage than a 'stronger' character by hitting more times.)

"But if you can get skilled enough... you can use a speed advantage to negate an opponent's attack: Here try an attack against me and I can demonstrate."

"Ah... right!" You launch yourself into the air and bring your Purifier Beam to bear... But right before you can even begin to pull the trigger, a flash of red strikes the weapon from your hand. You blink as you realize that Red Rose is in the air with you, spear extended with your Beam spinning through the air to land on the ground near James.

(Extra Skill Abilities (From now on referred to as 'Skill Levels') enable the ability to trade actions to negate strong attacks from an opponent. The higher the Skill Level, the fewer actions required to negate an opposing action.)

The older Magical Girl lands with a soft grace as you float over to pick your weapon back up.

"It's a lot harder to do in an open combat situation, but a bit of practice can result in something similar. But be warned: such a move can leave you open to an opponent." As you return to your starting place, she rests her spear across her shoulders. "Another thing you need to get used to is putting magic into your attacks, and reinforcing your defense with magic when you get attacked. It's usually referred to as the 'Magic Modifier'. Some MGs are better at it than others, and a large number of practitioners have learned how to do something similar to it, but aren't a good as even newbie magical girls."

(The 'Magic Modifier' represents the maximum amount of extra power a Magical Girl can input into an action in a moment's notice. In combat this is translated into Dice Rolls. The higher the Modifier, the larger the Dice Count. A Modifier of 15 will have a 1d15, while a Modifier of 1000 will have a 1d1000. But due to the fickleness of the RNG this isn't something one should rely on. Overmuch.

Purifier Beam: +10 base damage, +4 dice, +5 RAGE = 19 total damage)

"Magical Girls also come with ingrained instincts, you might have noticed them during your fight with the Spawn of Mayhem. They're very reliable. Studies have confirmed that Magical Girl Instincts have a habit of trumping developed instincts in life-long soldiers. So if your gut tells you to duck. You duck. The biggest hurdle you'll face will be learning to trust those instincts. The more comfortable you become with following them, the better off you'll be."

"But.. where do they come from?"

"Have you ever watched Magical Girl shows? You remember how it seems like even when they just become magical girls they have some skill in combat? Well, that portrayal has lead to children around the world to believe that all Magical Girls have some form of skill in combat. It might no be the most efficient, but they'll see you through the fight."

(Anastasia Nepgear will automatically take basic actions during a fight, such as 'dodging' or 'parrying' if appropriate. These action will add modifiers to combat to either increase your personal survival or increase damage caused to an opponent during a fight.

Solid Core: +5 Base Resilience, +7 Dice, +2 Dodge Attempt, +0 ??? = 14 Damage Reduction
Templar AD Tank: +100 base resilience, no dice bonus, -10 Previous damage = 90 Damage Reduction

How often these actions are taken, or how much they change can be upgraded in the shop later.)

"The last, and probably most important thing is resistances. Some enemies are resistant to certain types of damage or take extra damage from certain types of attacks. These resistances and weaknesses are more intuitive than defined, but tend to be simple and pretty obvious."

(Elemental Affinities can also cause changes in damage calculation. These changes tend to be based in a kind of 'common sense' spectrum. For example an enemy with an ingrained water element will take extra damage from an enemy slinging lightning spells around because water conducts electricity. Less obvious weaknesses also exist: for example the forces of the Unified Darkness are collectively weak against the 'Purity' element, because they are considered 'Impure' or 'Corrupted'.

Spawn of Mayhem: +50 Base Resilience,
-10 Weak to Purification Effects = 40 Total damage reduction

Other affinities also have hidden strengths, like Goddess Gold's 'Rule' affinity, which causes extra damage to 'Those that serve another'. So on.)

"There also exist some affinities that are hard to quantify, but still hold weight. You'll probably run into those at some point but right now they don't matter. What you need to do is figure out what your affinities are and how they'll interact with your future enemies."

(Your Purity Affinity will allow you to consistently deal a small amount of extra damage to opponents that you consider 'Impure' or 'Evil'. The stronger the feeling, the more damage you'll do. Your Faith Affinity on the other hand isn't directly influenced by you. Instead, it gives you a power bonus against enemies that are 'feared' or 'reviled'. It also gives you a power boost if certain other conditions are met, but those are unknown by your character right now.)

"Later, we'll go over team dynamics and how to coordinate with your teammates, but we're running out of time. If you have any questions later on, feel free to ask. I'll be free." And with that, she dismissed her spear, and turned to where the rest of team GEAR were watching the rather bland training session. "Same with the rest of you, got it?"

They all nodded and just like that, she left.

Richard breaks the silence, "Well. That was a bit boring. I was kind of expecting her to start wailing on you until you pulled some sort of power-learning ability out your ass and started matching her or something."

No one responds for a moment, until James sums up your collective opinion.

"You watch too much anime."

Well. You had a ton of time to burn as it was. And if you were going to be deployed at the end of the week, then it was better to spend at least some free time getting a bit of extra learning in. Every bit of knowledge you gathered could mean the difference between living and dying a horrific and painful death on the front lines.

And considering your current tutor was Red Rose, she would be your best bet for getting that extra training. So, that meant you had to hunt her down to get any kind of extra lessons. It winds up being a lot harder than you would think. A trek around the base nets you pretty much nothing, until you spot her sitting atop the control tower for the base's runway. The tower itself is rather short, and somewhat small. Red Rose herself was sitting at the end of the roof as a cargo plane slowly lifted off the ground and flew northward.

You take the set of stairs attached to the side of the building to first reach the door into the tower's control room, and then use the ladder that led to the roof. Once up, you realize that Red Rose had never actually dismissed her costume, the form of her red spear resting along the ground jut behind her as she watches the workers bustle about the air field almost wistfully. And for a moment, you are struck dumb with the beauty of the image.

"What do you want kid?" And just like that the image is ruined.

"Umm... I was wondering if I could get a bit more training past the basics? There's a lot of stuff I don't really understand and..." She interrupts you before you devolve into a stuttering mess. Quietly you're glad she did so.

"A bit more past the basics? Heh. Goddess Gold should be taking care of this, but I guess I can help. Get up here."

You quickly scramble up what's left of the ladder as she stands, lifting her spear, and points for you to sit slightly off to the side. "I was thinking of going over this later, but since your here I might as well tell you this. It'll even give us more time tomorrow to work on your training with your teammates. How much do you know about extra abilities?"

You scratch at you chin, "N-not much... Just that most spells and magical weapons have things they can do outside of their original intent."

"Right. Humans call these 'Extra Abilities'. They come about from the original intent behind the creation of a spell, or a strong desire from it's use. Some abilities are one-off things. Others rear their heads whenever certain condition are met... and others can activate more than once so long as those conditions are met."

(All abilities normally activate once per move. For example your Celestial Severance's 'Unstoppable' ability only activates when its used. Other abilities activate whenever it's conditions are met: for example your Armored Core power activates on all incoming damage, but only once per hit. The last, referred to as 'Recursive Abilities' Activate the instant the conditions are met, no matter how many times they've already activated. The most prominent example that your character has is Red Rose's ability 'To Stand Amongst Gods'. Which will activate so long as the damage done exceeds 20% of her max health. For example, if Goddess Gold attacked her with Oblivion Awaits at full power, TSAG will activate and reduce the incoming damage by 99%. The end damage would still exceed 20% of her max health, causing the ability to trigger again, reducing it even farther, until the damage done drops below 20% of her max health.

It's a very bullshit ability.)

"The trick is to identify the abilities in play and to either neutralize them, or find a way to counter them with your own. It takes practice, but it works wonders. Just understand some abilities out there can't be countered very easily." She adjusts her footing, taking a stance and balances her spear in one hand. "Other abilities are more supportive, than offensive though. While not applicable to direct combat they can still be useful if you know how to use them properly. Watch."

She tenses for a moment, and with a loud 'bang' her spear rockets into the sky. You can see the air condense along it's flight path as it lances out over the air field, tracing almost a mile before it vanishes into a red light and reappears in Red Rose's outstretched hand. You blink.

"While my spear's 'Return' ability doesn't seem that helpful it gives me a type of ranged attack, and makes it nearly impossible for me to be disarmed in the middle of battle. So, even if an ability seems useless at first, don't dis it until you try it." She spins the weapon with a small flourish before pointing it at you. "Get up, I want to see how good you are with that beam cannon of yours."

For a moment you stare at her in horror. Then she scoffs and whacks you atop your head with the spear. Obviously, it hurts.

"Common, you can't be that bad with it! You survived a damn Spawn of Mayhem."

Ten minutes later, Red Rose revises her opinion.

"Oh my god, how the fuck did you survive that thing?"

You try to huddle in on yourself as you stand in front of her. A large bruise already forming on your cheek where she had thumped you rather well. The whole ordeal had you almost wishing you had done something else.

"Alright.. alright... Dear god this is almost painful to watch. Take a stance." With a gulp you do as directed. And as soon as you do so, she starts poking you with her spear, and you try not to twitch too much, "Tighten your grip slightly, but not too much. Spread your legs a little and lower your center of balance. Good, lean forward a bit more, and stiffen your back... now try to swing at me."

You nod, and lunge at her...

(Panzer Blade: 45 Base Damage, -33 Barely Competent, No Dice = 12 Damage
Red Rose: 750 Base Resilience, -50 Standing Still, No Dice = 700 Damage Reduction

Red Rose Health: 5000 - 0 = 5000)

But she side-steps easily. A flick of her wrist, and your attack is knocked aside, and your sent stumbling several steps before face-planting into the roof of the Flight tower. "Gaaahh -ahk! Guuhh...." You lay there for a moment as the dizziness passes.

"Your telegraphing your attacks really badly. Your actual attack is in good form, but you put too much weight behind it, so when I deflect it, you lose your balance which leads to... that. Rely more on the weight of your blade, and if your attack gets deflected, try to roll with the change in momentum. Easier to keep your balance that way. Now, try again."

With a nod you lunge again. This time, when she deflects your Panzer Blade, you instead use the momentum her counter imparted onto the weapon to pull you away. Had this been some kind of shounen manga, you would have kept your balance and lunged again. Instead, your foot lost traction and you found yourself landing flat on your back with a thump.

"Better. Sorta. We'll try it again a few more times and call it a night."

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Feeling very sore, you find yourself dragging your feet across the base. But instead of heading towards your bunk you stumble into the third barracks, where Rei had set up her little 'throne' room.

No seriously. She had turned the fucking visitor area into a god damned throne room. It was as cheesy as it sounded and from the smirk on her face, from where she was literally lounging in the giant titanium chair painted gold, you could tell she had them make it as cheesy as they could manage when making it. Your stunned look of horror would probably get turned into a meme, but the situation warranted it.

The floor was covered in a red carpet, with cloth decorations along the walls of the same color. Gold(?) statues of various things ranging from mythical beasts to other Magical Girls dotted the room, along with other decorations of various persuasion. The throne itself was a huge affair, elaborate beyond reason with huge cushions that seemed to envelope the one in the chair.

Rei herself was practically draped over the massive thing. With her long legs hanging over one side of the construct, with her head perched atop one hand, with the other holding a hardcover book in her lap. Her golden hair draped across her face and shoulders, slightly damp with moisture, and a fluffy pink bathrobe testament that she had recently gotten out of the shower.

A small part of your mind that wasn't stunned into horror noted that the name of the book was 'Green Eggs and Ham' and promptly joined the rest.

You have no idea how long you stood there with her silently laughing at you. But eventually she snaps her book closed, and sighs. "Are you going to stand there until you collapse, or are you going to respond?"

"..." Apparently your brain still can't manage to reboot.

"Alright... if your stuck like that, I might a well do something about it." She stands from her 'throne' and walk over to you. Lifting one of your arms, she drapes it across her shoulder and lift you into a bridal-carry. "Lets go." And with that carries you towards the door to her room.

Right as she opens it, and begins to carry you though your brain finally reboots. Sadly, it's too late. "H-hey! Wait!"

You flail, but to her greater strength it's pointless, "Nope! you're mine right now!~" Her reply is delivered in a singsong voice.

The door closes with a note of finality.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

Forty five minutes and the longest bath of your life later you find yourself in the softest bathrobe you've ever worn while sitting on Rei's bed. You can practically feel the blood that suffuses your face. It helps to distract you from the fact that you wouldn't be leaving the room tonight because the clothes you had been wearing were all being washed at the moment.

"What? Did you honestly think I would deflower you without your permission? You're so cute when your flustered like that.~" What it didn't help with was the cause. Rei sits behind you, running a very expensive brush through your hair, playing with it between brush strokes. "You're definitely perfect little sister material. So glad I claimed you when I did. You're all mine.~"

She places the brush down onto the huge bed your sitting on and leans forward to wrap her arms around you. The sensations to your back are very distracting now.

"You know you don't have to hide anything in here. Fooling yourself as you are, it must not be very healthy."

And just like that your no longer distracted.

"I-I, what do you mean?" It's weak, even to your ears.

"I know what it's like to lose a sister."

Everything stops. The sound of your heartbeat is suddenly like thunder in the silence. You have been trying your hardest not to think about it. Not to think about anything relating to it. But Rei doesn't even slow down before shattering the barrier.

"... How?" Your voice is small. So very small in the silence, before the sound of your heart.

Rei's voice is equally small. Within it you can hear the longing that plagues you. The desire to see them once again. "Once upon a time, there were four sisters. And the last, left alone, became the Hero they all sought to be. And that... is my story."

Four Sisters. The Goddess Four. The strongest Magical Girls to ever exist. You knew only a part of the story. Everyone did. But to be actual sisters? "I... I never thought..."

"Ni was my only biological sister. Ichi and San were adopted when we were all five. Mom and Dad weren't all that creative with names. They liked to keep thing simple." She rests her head atop yours. You can't see her face, but her grip around you tightens. "I don't know when everything started to go wrong. It seemed all so sudden, Ichi died, then Ni went mad and San... It's hard to think about it you know? Here I am with all this power, but when it really mattered... it all amounted to nothing. So... Now I spend my days moving from one battlefield to another, trying to keep what's left safe. So... I know what your going through. I know what your bottling up and trying not to think about.

"Just... let it all out. Right here, where no one can judge you."

You turn in place, looking at the older Magical Girl, the strongest mortal to ever exist. The faint tears in her eyes, and the melancholy smile on her face. For a moment you just lock eyes with her, then you dive back into her hug and scream.

You scream your anger, you scream your anguish.

But most of all, you simply scream for your sister. The sister that had saved you from torment, and had taken care of you.

You sit there and scream out your sorrow.

You have no dreams that night.

-/LINE BREAK IDENTIFIED\-

The following day you find yourself stumbling blearily out of Rei's barracks and towards the training grounds. Your emotions feel like a ragged edge, but a heavy tenseness that had pervaded your mind without you noticing is gone. You feel worn... but somehow you also feel lighter. As if you had sliced an infected wound open and let it bleed the infection out.

Team GEAR I waiting for you near the training grounds, fully clad in their armor. Michael almost cracks a joke before he, and everyone else notice your current condition. "Holy shit kid, you feeling alright?"

You nod jerkily at the question. "I- I'm okay. Just... a lot on my mind, y'know?" Thankfully they don't ask any more questions, letting you wait in silence until Goddess Gold and Red Rose both join you. Red Rose takes one look at you before sighing, but doesn't say anything as Goddess Gold drapes herself across a low wall to watch the show.

"Alright. Today I'm going to go over team combat. Your performance a few days ago was pathetic." Richard glances at you, but your feeling too worn to glare at him, "So today we'll try again. As we probably all know, but Nepgear has yet to learn, Human soldiers are physically weak in comparison to other species in the local dimensional cluster. Out advantage lies in technology and ranged capabilities. Meaning, your main objective as a magical girl, is to keep your opponents off your teammates so they can support you from range. Understood?"

"Yes ma'am." Your able to push some of the lethargy back in order to pay better attention to Red Rose's lecture.

"Now. The thing we'll be practicing on today is timing your attacks for maximum effect against an enemy. I'm going to be trying to get past you in order to hit the rest of your teammates. I want you to keep me busy long enough for them to try and get some hits in on me ok?"

(Human soldiers are highly effective ranged combatants. But are noticeably weak in close quarters engagements. Some offset this by using some form of melee weapon, or the ever-reliable shotgun. But this can only go so far. In combat, your teammates will attempt to support you from a distance by firing bursts from their weapons. How they do this can be modified during the planning stage of a fight, but will otherwise simply take pot shots whenever an opening I presented. Jessica on the other hand is capable of closing with an enemy and supporting you at the front during an emergency, just don't expect it to help too much.)

"Come at me when you're ready."

Team GEAR shares a look before they nod to you and scatter. At the same time you launch yourself forward, swinging your blade at Red Rose.

(Panzer Blade: 45 Base Damage, -11 Semi-Competent, no dice = 34 Damage
Red Rose: 750 Base Resilience, -10 Headlong Rush, no dice = 740 Damage Reduction

Red Rose Health: 5000 - 0 = 5000)

She catches your attack on the blade of her spear, and redirects your attack into the ground. Blade stuck there you run smack dab into it with a grunt. Winded you barely manage to stumble out of the way of a retaliatory slap.

Then Jessica and Richard open fire.

(Jessica - Full Auto: 250 Base Damage, +50 Full Auto, +50 Full Auto, +50 Full Auto, +50 Full Auto, +50 Full Auto, no dice = 500 Damage
Richard - Full Auto: 250 Base Damage, +50 Full Auto, +50 Full Auto, +50 Full Auto, +50 Full Auto, +50 Full Auto, no dice = 500 Damage
Red Rose: 750 Base Resilience, +45 Momentum, +10 Debris = 805 Damage Reduction

Red Rose Health: 5,000 - 195 = 4,805)

Red Rose is fast. She outright dodges at least half of what's sent at her. others ping off what little debris is between her and her attackers, and she uses her spear to deflect even more by spinning it through the air with a noise akin to a buzz saw. But there' too many bullets. You watch as some of the stun rounds impact her. She stumbles.

You're on her again.

(Panzer Blade: 45 Base Damage, -11 Semi-Competent, no dice, +10 Opening = 44 Damage
Red Rose: 750 Base Resilience, -25 Poor Balance, -10 Stun Rounds = 715 Damage Reduction

Red Rose Health: 4,805 - 0 = 4,805)

But again she deflects you. But this time, instead of simply ignoring you she retaliates.

(Blood Spear: 2000 Base Damage, +10 Opening, no dice = 2010 Damage
Solid Core: 25 Base Resilience, no dice, -5 surprise = 20 Damage Reduction
Armored Core: 99 Damage Reduction

Solid Core Health: 100 - 1891 = -1791)

The butt of her spear meets your stomach and the world goes white. You gag but nothing moves through your throat, your pain receptors shut down instantly and you're suddenly flying through the air as reality catches up. You slam into something, but you cannot process anything through the pain.

In the background shouts from your team goes up, and everything devolves into gunfire and gibberish. You are unsure about what the hell just happened, and it takes you several minutes to even start breathing properly, something that flees you a second time as your pain receptors reboots and you dissolve into agony as your gut announces how much the world hates you in that moment.

It is in this spot you remain for another several minutes as you process the damage.

"I think I hit her a little too hard."

"You think?"

These are the first intelligent words you are able to process through the haze of agony.

"Ouch." It is horribly inaccurate for the sheer amount of pain your in but is the only legible muttering you are capable of in that moment. Slowly, the world reshapes itself in your vision to see Rei leaning over you amused and with a stick and Red Rose looking slightly mortified off to the side.

"She's not worth very much broken you know."

"I know... lets get her to the infirmary to make sure nothing is, and call it a day."

A short trip to the infirmary later and a -relatively- clean bill of health, you find yourself with a mostly free evening. All you really had to deal with was the excess pain that was promised to be gone in the morning.

What to do?

Once you were given a clean bill of health, you left the infirmary as quickly a you could manage. The smell of antiseptic makes you feel nauseous. From there, you make your way across the base to your barracks where the rest of Team GEAR awaits your glorious return. You pop the door open, trip over the door jam, and stumble across the room just to land in the pile of Jessica's armor at the foot of her bed - which is the closest to the door.

You lie there for a minute cursing your life.

As your team finish having a good laugh at your expense you dig yourself out of the pile and plop onto Jess' bed. "So, after I got my ass handed to me, how did the rest of you do? Wasn't able to process anything after the gut check."

Richard chuckles, "It went about a well as one would expect a fight between a squad of normal humans and a magical girl would go. We lasted for maybe four more minutes before she took us all out. Jessica tried to keep her off the rest of us while we threw everything else we had at her, but that didn't really do much. Just got her as kicked faster."

Said soldier rolls her eyes, "Hey, at least I lasted longer than the rest of you. A whole forty seconds. Richard lasted maybe ten once she got in range of him." You smile vindictively at that. Deserved that for the stupid nickname he-

"So, Nepgear-" Your eye twitches, "how exactly did she lay you out so damn easy? I'd have thought that you would have been a lot tougher to take out than that."

You sigh, Red Rose had held the same opinion until your little extra session the previous night, "I'm not actually all that good. The Spawn of Mayhem's attack on my home town was actually the event that awoke my powers. I only survived all of that because of nothing but divine intervention. Screw luck." Most of them seem a bit surprised at that, but James simply nods at you. The conversation the two of you had your second night here coming back. "So yeah. I'm not all that impressive really. I barely even understand how the basics of my powers work. Past that, I'm little more than cannon fodder." It's a chilling thought. Magical Girls stronger than you died by the droves in this war. Girls of Truth's strength averaged about three years before running into something too strong or too strange for them to handle and died. The Four Goddesses were the second longest living Magical Girl group in history. At nearly six years of service they were ancient in comparison to the rest.

The oldest? Magical Girl White Soul. And that was only because she had been functionally un-killable. Red Rose proved that theory wrong, but before then, no one thought she could die. MGs of your demonstrated strength? Yours tended to last less than a year at the longest. Barely strong enough to keep up with base human soldiers, you would be lucky to last past your first month in this war. If you played it smart, and the gods of luck stayed with you, you might be able to survive long enough to get enough power to make a difference.

But considering your luck so far? You'd probably use it all up surviving your first battle.

"Sorry." And just like that you can feel the depression setting in as the looks of dawning realization and horror start to appear on your teammate's faces. You can tell that they both know the same facts, and have come to same conclusion. You were fifteen years of age. And probably weren't going to live past your first month as a magical girl.

"Then, I guess we just have to keep you alive long enough to no longer be cannon fodder." Michael's voice breaks the silence. "I got the genius idea to read the little profile they made for you after your affinity testing." That got the room's attention again. But...

"What does that have to do with anything?" Your question is a little weak. Mike's smile turns cruel.

"What I mean is that you have an affinity only shared by four other Magical Girls ever... And each and every one of them showed a growth rate that was, quite frankly, ludicrous. Do you know who those Magical Girls are?"

Jessica moves to sit next to you as you shake your head at him, the rest of Team GEAR gathering close around. Once in a compact little circle, Mike pulls out his Data Mine. A little bit of fiddling and he pulls up two separate pictures. Once done, he starts speaking again. "After I found out your Growth Affinity, I looked it up to see how much effort would be needed to get you stronger. The stronger you get the better your chances of survival, so..." He shrugs a shoulder, "Anyway, It turns out that the 'Divinity' Affinity wasn't on the list of possible affinities until five years ago. Do you know which Magical Girls debuted as Independents five years ago?"

You blink and think back. You couldn't remember much from when you were ten... save the fact that was when your sister had taken you from your mother and moved out with you, so the news wasn't very high on your list. But...

"The Drives." Michael nods and understanding dawns on the rest of your team.

The Three Drives. An Independent team of Magical Girls that fought for the Unified Light five years ago. Famous for being the fastest rise in power to have ever been recorded, many had believed them to be the spiritual successors to the Goddesses. One after another they triumphed over nearly a dozen Lords of Darkness before their fall. And even now you could remember their Names and Legends.

Judgement Drive: The Leader of the Drives. She could, at a glance, judge a person's worth in the face of Civilization. And with that power, she faced the Darkness as the scale that weighed their sins.

Juggernaut Drive: The Strongest of the Drives. Her attacks broke any defense. She embodied her namesake to a point that no other Magical Girl in history had ever been able to manage.

And last was...

"Solid Drive." Your voice conveys your awe. The only times a Magical Girl would share any part of their name with another was if they were somehow related or had matching powers. The thought of having similar powers to one of the strongest Magical Girls in recent memory was an incredible thought. "I have the same Affinities as Solid Drive?"

Michael gins and nods, "The exact same. Purity, Faith, and Divinity. The Drives went from mediocre Magical Girls that no one expected to live past a month to the top fifty in the same amount of time. Even after their final battle, they're remember by the history books: and if my hunch is correct, you have the potential to surf the power curb just as easily as they did. The Goddesses took nearly a year to get to the top. Had they not fought Goddess Grey, everyone thinks they would have surpassed them within half a year."

And that was the kicker. The Drives had made such a large name for themselves in such a short amount of time that the Unified Darkness had taken a universal note of their existence. A note that led to Goddess Grey, the Second Strongest, to personally hunt them down.

It was said that the battle had been epic on a scale not seen since the Original Four. It had flattened New Mexico as a region and caused a death count that hadn't been seen since the Second Fall of Rome. And in the end... Juggernaut Drive dead, Solid Drive missing, and Judgement Drive left to pick up the pieces.

Goddess Grey had walked away with nary a scratch.

The result had been devastating for the Unified Light. The rising stars swept from the board, the hope of the war tipping into the favor of the Light crushed... That had been four years ago. And none had been able to match their potential.

Until the sudden out-of-nowhere appearance of Magical Girl Judgment Core.

The Fourth to ever hold Divinity as an Affinity, she has shown just as much, if not more, potential than the Drives. In just the three weeks she's been active she has risen from mediocre status, and into the position of being a rising star. A possible potential that you now share.

"The trick is to get your growth started though." James' voice cuts through your thoughts and calls attention back to the present of everyone in the room. "The slowest and safest is to keep you on base and training. But with the way the war is going that won't be possible. So we're stuck with the second option. We get you started on the weaker forces of Darkness and get you trained up as quickly as we can. The faster, the better. But we have to try to gain as little attention as possible. If the Unified Darkness sends Grey after you we're screwed. A fight between her and Gold will wipe us from existence just as assuredly as trying to take her on our selves."

You nod. Fear morphs into determination and you feel your resolve harden. The image of Goddess Gold standing over you imposes itself next to the image of your sister's ruined corpse. You know your goal.

"Then we have a lot of work ahead of us."

Echoes. Flashes.

A liquid world.

Nothing stays.

You wake moments before Jessica's alarm clock goes off and wakes everyone.

Your dreams are hazy, nothing shows itself.

The day starts.

"Alright. Apparently Red Rose's explanations yesterday led to some misunderstandings." Today Goddess Gold stands before you, armor gleaming in the light. Red Rose stands somewhere behind her looking slightly chastised."Yes, Magical Girls are supposed to try and keep their opponent away from their human comrades, but not to the point they completely abandon their strongest methods of fighting. As a ranged Magical Girl, Solid Core should be trying to shoot the motherfuckers that try to close on her allies. Not try to tackle them: 's an easy way to get killed until she gets better at swinging that oversized bayonet of hers."

You chuckle softly and scratch at the back of your head in embarrassment. Definitely not your brightest move the previous day.

"So. To keep any unfortunate accidents like yesterday from happening again, I'll be using this!" She whips out a...

Stick. Specifically, the same stick she had been poking you with yesterday while laid out on the ground. You tare at it.

"If I whack you with it, your out. Ready? Go." she doesn't even wait for a response before leaping at you with a manic gleam in her eye. A shout of panic and a half-dive latter, your rolling across the ground trying to avoid getting hit by the over-enthusiastic Super Magical Girl.

Admirably it only takes your team a few seconds to mentally reboot and come to your rescue.

Not like it does much good.

The stun rounds from their weapons bounce harmlessly off GG's armor, while Jessica's one attempt to draw her sword and intercept Rei long enough for you to get back up ends with the soldier laid flat. When you roll a little too close to Samael, GG changes her target from you to him just long enough to lay him out flat as well, but it gives you a chance to stand up and try to retaliate. Keyword here being try.

Your beam doesn't even leave a scuff mark, and your attempt to melee with her ends with your Purifier Beam flying through the air and you upside down against a brick wall dazed and confused.

James lasts the longest out of everyone but in the end even he goes down whimpering as Gold gives up to her frustration with him and nut-shots the poor sod. Later you overhear him mentioning to Jessica that he'd use the stupid cod piece to his armor.

With a cheerful wave, and a half-assed encouragement, Rei releases her transformation and leaves you and your team moaning on the training grounds.

After recovering enough to call it a day, you and Team GEAR temporarily scatter. James to the infirmary for a bit, and everyone else to the Barracks for an early rest. A glance at the slowly-setting sun, and a consideration...

What to do for the rest of the day?
