Going from the list of squadrons Anna is part of it's less that Last Word is always made up of 20 members so much as that when there's a call for a Subjugation Squadron they run down the shortlist and call on everyone that can assist. Not everyone is always able to respond, so it's not unknown for even the elite squadrons to miss a member during a given engagement.
Actually:

A pair of Type Zeros, Class B and Class C, facing Pinnacle Squadron head on. Moments later, the marker of the Three Hundred Squadron disappears.
Another replaces it.

[ID Confirm: Type Zero Subjugation Squadron: Last Word]

The former, they're just that durable... and mobile.

Yeah, it's unfortunate they're not kaiju sized. :(
For the record, and for anybody who HASNT considered this before, note that the description of "appropriate target for a coherent wave" implies that a class-C type Zero is either:

A) Hugely resistant to wave force

Or

B) Multiple cubic kilometers in size. Or in length, but probably size.

We killed that. Solo.

#AnnaFuckYeah.
Yes, tzs are very resistant to damage, obviously. But I personally think that static wave at our level is also absurdly inefficient at killing a very small target. A more precise version should be possible.

Well, it is efficient to have a shortlist of your elites (that is, the Three Hundred candidates) already arranged by squadron, and to have them swap designation according to their mission status. When they are operating under the header of Pinnacle they are the 'we've got/are ready for an emergency that needs elite soldiers to resolve' squadron, and when they are Last Word they're 'engaged with enemy Omega tier assets, we're not going to be available for assistance.'

That still doesn't reject the possibility of the squadron being fairly free form and seeing a lot of rotation of troops every week, rather unlike normal military formations which often sees soldiers spending multiple years in a single formation, possibly rising up the ranks within it.

Of course, the fact that Anna is basically on a long term mission she won't be called very often and only in extremis, which might be something that's noticed.
Remember anime, which means storytelling rules apply, Anna being called off for Last Word in the middle of class or Flight practice, would actually serve as a good introduction to her character arc, as it would serve to make other characters question her "on-screen" about her past.

We might be given the choice to go or not, but generally good versions of this story are about balancing life and the job, and not going when "the job" is introduced doesn't show how the character is out of balance.

I meant it being remarked upon in universe. Could be interesting to have it be a plotpoint started up somewhere in Season 1, about how the mysterious Ace with the callsign of Trump has never answered a call for Pinnacle and Last Word, Season 2 (we can afford to be patient) putting some character time and emphasis on Anna being an extremely broken bird and then the mid Season big battle forcing the flight into close contact with a Type Zero and Anna calling for support and/or telling the rest of the flight to run with the authority of being, well, the top member of the Three Hundred.

Then of course, this being an anime, them refusing and helping them kill/drive off the Type Zero while Last Word rushes in only to see the end of the fireworks and being left with clean up while the flight recovers from the battle.

Huh, looks like Elective Studies on Anna's character sheet has gotten an update. We now have Anna's confirmed opinion on everything she has seen so far! She actually gets pretty emotive for some of them.

Aerospace modelling - 2/10
The models are cute, I like them.

Athletics - 2/10
Uh.

Amateur novel writing and literary critique - 2/10
What?

Architecture - 2/10
Wow, really nice. Amazing to see what can be built when there are no Antagonists around.

Astronomy - 2/10
The sky is clear of enemies. The stars are pretty.

Baking: 2/10
...

Ballistics Study/Angry Birds: 2/10
What. The. Hell.

Board Games: 2/10
Was alright. Didn't see that much of this class.

Calligraphy: 2/10
Not my area of interest really...

Cars and Small Scale Models: 2/10
More cheerful than Aerospace modelling, the model cars are cute.
So Anna likes to build and make things, but can't bake things. She doesn't like any of the fighting related classes much, but relaxing at the stars is nice.

Anna finds model Cars and Planes cute.

Clearly, we need to start one-upping those scrubs in Aerospace Modelling Club and Car and Small Scale Models Club. Our spin-off Anime will be Crush Gear, except better.

I'm not sure what defines 'cute' to Anna, yet, but this is definitely worth investigating. Can't wait to see how she likes the rest of the electives- maybe we can work up to a full fledged 'adorable' find?

Yeah. We've got a Hiroshima nuke right now. Dirty, takes forever to build, and we know jack all about it tbh. There's hella room for improvement; whether in a "tactical nuke" or "strategic nuke" direction we will see.

Doubt it.
It's not an Anna focused arc yet. Whatever they'll see would be vague enough to start a discussion but not confirm anything.

@Pinklestia if you like your OC so much, write an omake. Maybe you don't do a lot of writing, but if you like the idea enough, you'll be able to write it. That's what got me to write Vae. But, the OC does not fit into this quest. Members of the 300 exist whom with their frame are on par with Anna. But explicit in quest is that no one without a 300 frame exists who is even close to her. Additionally, the UN has child soldier laws, so the OC would be an adult or a Shuri clone.

... But that's what you're talking about. You want a Shuri clone who isn't an asshole. Or, if you prefer, you want Yukari, who is EXACTLY what you are talking about for an OC except slightly scaled back: not as much trauma, not as much skill.

And that is why your OC cannot fit into this quest: the characters whose roles it would take on already exist.

So, again: write an omake.

Hence why the OC was aged up, and Pakistan violated said child soldier laws, and at least others others did too, or Anna would not have got her frame when she was eight. Pakistan is the country that got caught.

Another option would be a broken veteran, just how long have Valquiries existed?

And the fact people seems to be moving in what are basically Valquirie fortress if they can means humanity is slowly losing territory to the Antagonist.

Do we have a map or something?

That defeats the entirety of

Show the character screaming with no sound on for like ten seconds, then switch to what the others are doing.

Viewers wonder what the heck is going on, speculate and write fics. Success!

Anna found her Core. Literally, found it in the middle of nowhere.

Do we have a map or something?
Front page, right on the very top of the first post.

Again, not Anna focused arc yet and that defeats the entirety of it.

The way I see it, from viewers' perspective it would be a perfectly generic harem plot. While the setting is at -1 Alignment, it would seem at all times that its +3/+4 with no actual enemies ever seen on screen. There is a Tournament Arc, a Beach Episode, a Festival and Character Arcs.

All while there are reports of distant battles with antagonists, random explosions in the background and rumors of an uncovered Government Conspiracy. Annas Arc is the last and only then its uncovered that it was all her doing to protect her friends, essentially destroying all plot-scheduled threats before they hit the Screen.

Instant Best Girl. Mission Accomplished.

Except Humanity is expected to win in about ten years or so, per word of @Avalanche , and the only difference between a -1 setting and a +1 setting is the level of plot armor everybody gets. Humanity isn't dying by pretty much any metric, because, unlike the Imperium of Man, they aren't all trying to kill each other (just the bad guys, who will inevitably get their hands on some 300 cores).

... Again, that defeats the purpose of

No, it doesn't. We're talking about the ANIME, not the in-world scene.

What did the VIEWERS see is the question. But yea, good point on Anna's arc. Still there are always in show hints long before said arc in the good shows. :p

I guess all they saw was the mecha start to eat something then spit it out. Still enough to get interest in WTF, I just feel like Anna lost the chance to milk that scream for all it's worth. :p

Makes me think of a quote:

'And therefore the victories won by a master of war gain him neither reputation for wisdom nor merit for valor. For he wins his victories without erring. 'Without erring' means that whatever he does insures his victory; he conquers an enemy already defeated.' -Sun Tzu, The Art of War

I find this oddly appropriate for Anna. Not to mention that by herself she actually follows many of the tenets laid out in The Art of War. She hammers weak points and can perform speedy withdrawal it the enemy calls in the big guns. She knows exactly what she is capable of and has unparalleled situational aware and can quickly judge the best position to attack or defend from with her sensors. Finally, she handily breaks apart enemy formations into more manageable pieces and uses the enemy's own resources to fuel her attacks reducing her need for a supply line.
