Part LVII: Hunt Interrupted
Hunt Interrupted

Ninth Day of the Eleventh Month 289 AC

Things do not go as planed almost from the moment you enter the house in the early evening Lya proves annoyingly observant as always and notices your injury as soon as she sets eyes on you. She insists on supporting you all the way to your room even though you made it across half the city to get here on your own. When she asks you how you came to be in this state you try to paint a less reckless picture however either the pain is affecting your ability to lie convincingly or you are uniquely less competent in lying to this one girl, as she gets the gist of events very quickly.

Listening to all the ways you could have solved things without getting hurt does not make for a fun hearing. You suspect the most truthful defense that you just wanted to fight them will not go down well. Fortunately her frustrating but accurate tirade is interrupted when you reach your bedroom. Lya leaves probably to get whatever pain reliever Alyra has as you summon Velen.

At least the phoenix is not giving unwanted advice, you think with what you know is unfair irritation yet cannot stop yourself feeling it just the same. Soothing light pours from the fiery bird's body as it he touches you. The pain fades and you feel energized and ready to return to your task.

Just then you hear he door. It is not Lya, it's Dany. She looks worried and determined at the same time.

"It's late," she declares in a rush, "there's no use going back out right now."

You open your mouth to reply but she talks over you:

"And the day after tomorrow's my nameday. You should rest up to you can buy me the bestest present right?"

Lya, you realize, does not play fair. You do not know whether you want to yell at her or hug her. With a sigh you give in to Dany's pleading eyes and agree to stay in and get a good night's sleep so you can go present hunting tomorrow.

Tenth Day of the Eleventh Month 289 AC

Today you intend to spend the whole day planing Dany's nameday and gift because that is the least she deserves for being as clever and brave as she is and your last living kin besides. You might not be able to give her a nameday fit for a princess but you'll give her the best one you can

What foot will you buy for the celebration

[] Honeyed chicken
[] Pastries
[] Pomegranate
[] Iced milk sweetened with honey
[] Fruittarts
[] Fruits (write in which)
[] Duck with lemons
[] Blackberry cakes
[] Write in

What present do you buy Dany:

[] A silver and moonstone tiara in the Myrish fashion. The closest you can come to a crown. (15 Iron marks)
[] A copy of Lomas Longstrider's Wonders Made by Man (20 Iron marks)
[] A small harp like you distantly remember your mother used to play (18 Iron marks)
[] Write in

OOC: More examples of ASOIAF cuisine can be found here. Just give me a menu and I'll name a price. It'll help with writing the nameday itself. Write-ins are also encouraged for the present.

For some reason I imagine the plums going very well with the chicken. Sounds delicious.

I like the book best, as gift. Something she can treasure for a long while.

guys money, serously we did not take the investment option and it looking like we are going to have problems getting a reward for the quest. Since if it is a Druid none of you guys will kill said Druid and bring the animals back.

@DragonParadox how much will everything cost

For the food, I must say that I am stumped. What I like and what they like is different to the point of making feel sick just by reading about. Honeyed chicken without some kind of fruit to make it lighter ?! Milk outside of the morning ?! duck with lemons of all thing ?!

Chicken with honey is okay but it would be boring and really fast awful. Like after one mouthful of it. Maybe add some cooked fruit (apples or oranges ?) to make it better ? I would personnaly cook it with manguoes and cinnamon but I would cook everything with cinnamon and manguoes if I could.
Milk with honey. Yurk. Yogurt with honey and a side dish of fruit (strawberry, apple or other non juicy fruit) instead ?
Cook the duck with orange or another sugary fruit. Acid and fat never mix well.

Be as creative as you like within the bounds of medieval cuisine. I would applaud it. I literally picked stuff at random before giving up and linking the list.

I can't imagine it going past 10 Iron Marks. It is just one meal for a small household.

Okay. I have made a possible meal.

[X]Oatbread baked with bits of date, apple, and orange
Nice entry. Not too complex nor too heavy but with taste.
[X] Roasted honeyed duck on a bed of oranges and Berries.
Maybe remplace the duck by a suckling pig ? Maybe add some peaches (Not cooked, so at the end.) Roast and recolt the juice, add the juice to the wok where you make the fruit cook with a tad of water and sugar/honey.
[X] Side dish of bread.
I would add pasta or rice here (preference to rice) but it doesn't seem to exist in ASOIAF.
[X] Fruittarts and pastries. (Apples and pears. and for the pastry, just whatever we find )
So we have a change from the previous to keep the interest of peoples. less nurishing too ^_^
[X] Fruits and cheese.
Grapes, oranges and cheese of goat.
Must be eaten more slowly, so we can offer our gift here and go to the garden table/chairs.

I am not conviced by this. (Seriously, we need a side dish and I don't know what to give), but it's okay.

Edit : I know middle ages don't have side dish per se, but please, let us have our pastas :V (I know that rices could break a setting)

Those sound completely normal to me...

And how dare you insult milk? It's one of the reasons that Americans are huge (not fat, that's just an absurd dedication to the whole three square meals a day thing).

@archangis great work on the menu. That looks delicious.

Meh, I just reworked what I always give to people when I need to cook. An entry found on the internet and easy to make followed by filet of duck/steak cooked in a pan and reusing the same pan to cook fruits (I always cook manguoes. Because it's easy even if you forget about it). Add whatever pastry I can find that do not contain the same kind of fruit than the ones used before and some fruit and cheese. Ask people to bring wine (mainly because I am terrible at choosing wine) and you are set.

EDIT : I tought hard once upon a time at what would be the easiest and cheapest for me to make and *Chazam*.

Never reworked on it. I am using the same thing that I did when I was 12. :V

Let's chalk it up to cultural difference.

Aka I have a culture, me. /joke
