Not worth the risk really if it makes things harder with spiders, still hope we can farm it if we are able to get our hands on some giant spiders that are trainable. Silk is an awesome trade good, super tough while still being light, has lots of crafting uses, and coming from giant spiders hopefully means it takes magic well.
"Now, Lolth, do you want to talk?"
"I <sniff> no I <sniff> I'm NOT weak! <sob>"
"Now now my dear, we've all been there. It can't be that bad, now?"
"WHAT? I had that old snake crunched, and my beatiful children were happy around his old strongpoint, laying the trap for when he rebirthes ..."
"Yes, that was a well-thought plan."
"AND THEN HIS PET DRAGON OBLITERATED EVERYTHING! Killed my children, took them as sacrifices, and also took the whole strongpoint!"
"Ah, you must be talking about Vis-a-vis. He made quite some waves. We are looking."

[X] Plan "When in doubt...BIRDS!"
-[X] Viserys uses the Staff of the Old Gods to send an unkindness of ravens into the midst of the spider horde to gauge their reactions and any unexpected abilities they might possess.
--[X] If nothing unusual occurs, Viserys descends close enough to ground level so that he can target the monstrous spiders with Firebrand (normally 270 feet maximum range, now varies between 250 and 300 feet due to Wild Magic) while the others wait.
---[X] He first targets the larger spiders with a Searing, Agonizing, Firebrand as a Swift Action, then follows with a Searing, Merciful Firebrand, targeting those same spiders, if necessary, or smaller stragglers if not.
As you grasp the staff in your hand to let loose an unkindness of ravens under the blazing southern sun you wonder if their kind have ever flown these strange skies before. For certain no whisper of the Old Gods' power has ever dwelt this far from their pale groves... The spell takes hold, but by malice the hissing winds of magic suddenly howl into a gale stripping wards and blessings from you from you in a waves after waves of twisting unnameable color.

"What happened?" Ser Richard asks urgently, followed soon after by the others in a tangle of worry.
"The spell twisted strangely, tore apart some of my protections..." you hesitate. "It didn't feel like there was any malice behind it, more like ill luck in navigating the way magic is fractured here."
"So you are just going to go ahead and use yet more magic lower where it's even worse?" Dany asks doubt heavy in her words.
"Well we can hardly wrestle those things to the ground," you note resonably. "It's either use magic or give up on the whole notion of capturing those spiders."
"Capture?" you hear Bronn asking faintly in your wake as you begin your dive.
You descend upon the creatures in a storm of fire, reducing the titans to twitching smoking mounds of flesh and chitin baleful crimson eyes weeping over the ruin of their kindred, four spells one after another worked as the warp and weft of magic surged and heaved around you like a storm-tossed sea, though thankfully flashing only at your flesh and not the magic that still surrounded you.
Trees crash and ancient stone crumbles as the webbing that had supported them burns or else is torn asunder by fleeting spiders trampling over each other in the rush to flee beneath the earth. As the throng recedes you begin to see the shape of the ruins among the breaks in the jungle canopy: broken roads emerging like the skeletons of some titanic serpent from he moss and underbrush, broken domes and twisted spires...
"This isn't just a tomb, nor a temple either, it's a city!" Xor exclaims, eye stalks twitching in excitement.
"Better to say that it was once long ago," Malarys interjects, flying a little closer, though still out of the way of most posibile attacks from the ground. "The very shape of the land must have changed."
"How do you figure?" Dany asks, far bolder in coming down to peer at the twitching burned bodies of your prisoners as well as whatever they must have been guarding.
"The body glimpsed in the enchanted glass was man-like and the cities of men share one commonality no matter by whom they are built or in what corner of the world," the mage priest replies. "All lie close to water, yet I seen no other break in the canopy that would indicate a major lake or river nearby."
"They could have used wells," Maelor points out. "Maybe that's what the bloody great holes the smaller spiders ran down are..."
"No," you muse as you finally hand next to one, the moist jungle soil giving way almost two feet under your weight. "It does not have the look of something crafted, more like the earth itself cracked here."
"See anything down there?" Dany asks obviously eager to make the most of her day of exploration.
"Just a long dark shaft littered with a few trampled spider corpses..."
"Maybe we should question the bones then," she offers, glancing hesitantly at the skeleton arrayed upon the stone slab you had first glimpsed though the enchanted mirror.
"It's not cursed is it?" ser Richard asks, setting down himself on top of a charred spider corpse that breaks with a sickening crunch under his boots.
"No," your sister replies. "It just feels disrespectful to the dead to do that to the remains of someone who was never our foe."
"The tainted spiders as well as Yss' memories that this was the gathering place of a foe do not paint to kindly a picture," you argue.
Thus you discover that the city was was once named Venthar, an above of the 'Children of the Spider Queen', merely an outpost and observatory on the upper world for their proper dwelling places lay beep beneath the earth, how deep the bones cannot answer in any way you can make sense of, nor did the long dead mage know what brought about its fall for she perished when it was yet prosperous and living, a pace of trade and raids upon the surrounding people especially the Brindled Men. From all that she hears of those who once dwelt here Dany's guilt over disturbing the dead fades entirely.

OOC: The reason you did not get any of the smaller spiders is because anything smaller than huge was over-cooked even by merciful firebrands. Monstruous spiders don't really have that many hit points.
First and foremost, we should figure out where the hells we are. Whip out the Wayfinder and ping for Lya, the Sealord, Relath, Yrael, Manderly and Doran to get a rough location.
[X] Plan Lay Of The Land
-[X] Use the Wayfinders Lay of the Land feature to get your bearings, then the Circle Dance feature to track various people you know in Westeros and Essos to triangulate your position.
-[X] Drop a few bottles of vermin repellent into the holes to discourage the spiders from returning.
-[X] Take the mages skull for later questioning at home.
-[X] Vee, Maelor and Xor fly up and scout for other dangers.
-[X] Richard, Bronn and Viserys investigate the magic warping complex, with the latter using Dark Sister instead of spells.
[X] Plan Stock the Larder
-[X] Use the Wayfinder's Lay of the Land feature to get your bearings, then the Circle Dance feature to track various people you know in Westeros and Essos to triangulate your position.
-[X] If any spiders remain, attempt to capture them for sacrifice, using Irony to peteify them if possible.
--[X] Vee uses her Lay of the Land spell-like ability to gain a better understanding of the surrounding city, but first she makes certain none of the disabled spiders will recover enough to escape or fight back, while providing a minimum amount of healing necessary to prevent their premature death.
-[X] Dany, with Bronn watching her back, uses a set of the Mega-Project Tools in order to temporarily close off all of the visible spider holes in the city. A Greater Raven keeps watch on them from above, warning them of any approaching danger.
-[X] Vee, Irony, Maelor, and Xor fly up and scout for other dangers. A pair of Greater Ravens assist them in scouting the area.
-[X] Richard, Malarys, and Viserys investigate the magic warping complex, with the latter using Dark Sister instead of spells when possible. A Greater Raven maintains a scout position over the complex in order to warn Viserys of approaching danger.
-[X] Before departing, Turtle as many of the largest spiders as possible, then use the magic bedroll to recover spells in order to finish turtling the remaining spiders.
--[X] Blood Wish Irony back into his bottle for Vee's group to use in an emergency.
--[X] Take the magic items and go home while the expedition sets off to try and find Yss' children.
--[X] Take the mages skull for later questioning at home.
Indeed. The basic idea is to cleanse the area with fire, then coming back to build an outpost.
Though we should first figure out if there is something in the area that makes it worthwhile to build an outpost at all. I know that people think about making a bolt-hole here, but that idea is pretty pointless. SD is our bolt-hole.

It would have been difficult to capture many of the smaller spiders anyway. A Large-sized Monstrous Spider only has 4 HD anyway. It would have been nice to get some of them, but they would have almost been more trouble than they were worth, as we would have had some serious logistical difficulty transporting them all to SD. Even what we have now is going to require a ton of turtling and multiple Teleports. We should just barely be able to get it all done in time to get a full night's sleep so we can leave for Volantis tomorrow with a full magic tank.
We just bought two sets of the tools, then immediately left for Sothoryos after returning to SD from the Opaline Vault. We haven't had a chance to distribute them yet.
