Of the Wardens of Stone
Second Day of the First Month 293 AC
The chance to enter the Opaline Vault a hero to at least House Ajhar, though you suspect more, and ensure that the deed which saw you gain that reputation is not for nothing, is far too tempting to ignore. From the subtly satisfied look that passes over Alyneah's features when you agree, you suspect that she knows it as well as you do, not that you mind entering such a beneficial deal.
Moving quickly, you sweep up a few of the less damaged pieces of your foes and place them in your enchanted bag before handing it off to Ser Richard to benefit from the protections of his own subtle arcane talents. Probably closing the barn door after the horse is well and truly over the horizon when it comes to divining what went on here from the agents of the Brazen Throne, but it might serve against an off hand or poorly worded question.
Though the presence of the Shaitans and their arc does slow you down it does not do so nearly as much as you had feared. Rather then simply walking beside the ark the common warriors meld into the stone to either side of your path to guard against foes similarly gifted. As for Alyneah herself, she sinks a little more than ankle deep into the stone, moving in a constant ripple born of her kinship with the earth and mastery over it. The Ark itself easily keeps up, gliding silently a few inches above the floor... a strange thing for earth genies to make.

Thankfully the journey itself is quiet, the most unusual happenings being the stares of other travelers at seeing such mismatched company on the road. You do however gain a greater understanding of the arcane laws and perhaps even more complex unwritten codes of conduct of the shaitans... not that the latter stays unwritten for long. About half an hour into our conversation Malarys begins diligently taking notes, having extended his mastery of language.
At Dany's prompting Alyneah also speaks at length about her people's treatment of slaves, a matter flowing naturally from the fact that enslavement seems to be a exceptionally common punishment in the law of the Peerless Empire. This enslavement is always for a set period, though there is nothing preventing it from being far longer than any mortal lifetime, and it is always she insists voluntary, though her notion of the term certainly does not match yours. Even the most lowly of war captives or debased criminals may at any moment choose a painless death called
Queáth, the Release. Having one's slaves take this path is seen as a sign of shame and even unfitness to hold authority within Shaitan society. This serves as a part though by no means all the incentive for slaves to be treated well, even very well by the measure of most lands you have visited.
"I see you have had more dealings with the debased and foolish efreeti," the genie commander says at last reading your bemusement by either your expressions or the nature of the questions both you and Dany ask. "Fire consumes where earth builds up. Better to preserve the servants one has and ensure that they are skilled and content in their tasks than drive an endless wave of suffering, screaming malcontents through the streets."
"A wise notion," Malarys says lifting his eyes from his notes. "Yet I cannot help but wonder, and I crave forgiveness in advance if this shows a mortal's misunderstanding of your folk, is this ideal always followed?"
"No," she admits with a sigh. "In that, we are not so different, I am afraid. You see it most frequently with war captives... oh not most of them, we are doing the poor wretches the efreeti drive into their slave armies a favor to take them into our service when they have a chance to surrender. However, there are some slaves who were favored in their service, particularly ones who share their blood, those are on occasion mistreated by particularly foolish masters."
"And I imagine it can happen with criminals too," you probe.
"Yes, though there are laws and strictures in place to prevent a slave from being taken with the purpose of venting one's rage as opposed to gaining recompense, they can be circumvented by both malice and even sheer happenstance. A law which can codify All That Is can rightly be named a philosopher's ideal... no less than that, a poet's fancy."
"That does not mean that thinking, reasoning beings should ever stop striving for it," Malarys interjects earning an approving nod.

The Xorn greet you as heroes and Rock Shaker is of course excited to hear the tale of your journey and your battles. Alas you cannot spend more time with her and must instead hurry to deliver the iron and change your plans for the next few days to account for the journey to the Opaline Vault.
Once your delivery is done and your business with Alinor likewise, you come upon an unexpected trio, all wishing to return with you: Waymar, Maelor and Glyra.
"I'm sick and tired of sitting around, did too much of that as a fish," Waymar says cheerfully. "Besides I have to try out the new arm to make sure it works as well as the old."
As to the other two they are caught up in the thrill of discovery, of seeing strange new vistas beyond the circles of the world. "Always did want to see a city made of gold and gems like in the stories. Oh not do anything to it," he assures you. "I figure folk that can build a place like that are more then able to keep the likes of me from scratching the walls?"
