I'm looking forward to seeing her in action. An interlude from the PoV of a detachment of Tyroshi soldiers who keep dying to arrows striking from an unseen source would be fun, too.

Maybe add one of the Necklaces of Fireballs we have in storage for her to use if the situation calls for artillery?

I'm actually thinking about giving her the Staff of Fire for Tyrosh. Not much use to keep that thing in reserve forever and that's upgrading Aradia from sniper turret to aerial artillery.

@Azel that picture's cool, but it just doesn't strike me as "Lya", you know?
Doesn't she wear robes? Meanwhile, that picture has spiky shoulder thingies and a pretty un-robe-like front.

Part MDCLXVII: A Trial of Fire
A Trial of Fire

Twenty-Fifth Day of the Twelfth Month 292 AC

You take more time descending from the sky than your steed strictly requires to give the men below plenty of time to both see you and consider the implications of your ability to fly. Fortunately this draws not only the three men second-in-command of the main companies you hired, but also Uthero's representatives. To your carefully hidden amusement, the chief of these particular coin counters demands that you prove your credentials before proceeding further as the men around him, all warriors who had known battle look at him as though he had gone entirely mad. The more cautious of them even go so far as to shuffle slightly back.

Rather than the object lesson most of the men were likely expecting, you simply hand the clerk his letter and congratulate him heartily on his zealous protection of his patron's interests. Rather than release the tension this makes the men around you even more uneasy... after all, rage would have been an understandable sentiment to those position where your reaction hints perhaps at stranger motivations. Behind a carefully calculated smile you feel a slight upwelling of satisfaction. If you must have a reputation as some sort of inhuman monster, then you will at least draw what little use you can from it.

"Men, free blades of Essos!" you call, loudly enough to be heard beyond the circle of gathered officers. "I find myself lacking a particular city that has caught my eye! For that end you have been hired, not to bleed in an assault, nor suffer a withering siege, but hold it until the chaos has subsided from the streets. For this purpose you will be granted half again the worth of the contracts I negotiated with your captains... if my city is intact." So saying you sweep a hand forward and with a whisper of sorcery set the skies aflame, the fire close enough to blow a hot wind into the faces of the men bellow.

You allow the silence to grow to an uncomfortable degree until at last the lieutenant of the Long Axes speaks: "We will keep the faith. Of that I have no doubt, lord," he declares in a thick but understandable accent. "But if you make us all responsible for every fool, runaway, and green boy that might have been swept up in this business, then none shall claim your promised reward, and all the men will know it."

"I do not expect miracles," you reply. "I ask that you refrain from looting, rapine and burning. Further that you stop it when and if you see it. Such acts will be tracked by sorcery and if they are merely the work of as you said fools, then only they need suffer for it." You leave the matter of precisely what suffering might entail intentionally vague. Then more loudly again, "Any man who knows himself unable or unwilling to conform would be well served leaving now in peace rather than taking my coin and betraying these terms."

The officers trade worried looks, but in the end all those in the circle around you nod before moving on to matters of logistics. Here you use the truth to weave deception, that any spies or would-be spies would think you unready to act for months upon months while the barracks in Westheaven are erected. For all that you end on the same note of grim warning. "Take heed that I value the lives and livelihoods of my current subjects no less than my future ones. While you are guests upon my shores you will keep to the law."

With that you retreat into one of the larger tents to arrange the time and place of their embarkation for the Deep, before emerging near sunset to walk among the smaller warbands and lone blades along with Ser Richard to see if any of them men are worth their keep. There you discover something unexpected about yourself as well, you are actually decent with a sword, nothing to Ser Richard's superlative skill who could likely best common sellswords by the score, but still you find yourself holding your own even against veterans. Your strikes are quick and sure, your ability to anticipate and deflect blows the fruit of dozens, scores of battles against more than mortal foes.

For all that you have worn a dragon's skin and worked marvels by will and word alone, the part of you that most recalls the boy clumsily swinging a blunted blade under Ser Darry's supervision is rather pleased at the realization that at six-and-ten you can hold your own in such trials without the use of sorcery.

Even beyond that moment's satisfaction the trials prove useful in finding a little over a score of sellswords with skill and temperament that recommends them more for the legion, just as the investigations that follow reveal enough discontent at certain bands that you feel quite content to see them off.

22 legion officer candidates found

Free Blades reduced to 420

By the time you return to the Deep, well past midnight, you count this a day well-spent.

What do you do next?

OOC: You rolled really well for uncovering the more distasteful bands, so I had the thing wrap up in one day. Remember according to the schedule this next one is Viserys' last 'working day' this month except a virtual day teaching Lya a spell, which is mostly just time spent at night studying so that too is mostly done.

Debriefing Moonsong is important, as is making sure our CotF are settling in. They're probably even more unsure of their place than Rhaella.

Moonsong->CotF->End the day talking to Rhaella?

There goes that dream. :( And I don't see us making room for this any time in the near future.

I guess we're going to have to get lucky with Illyrio. I'm even inclined to push back Waymar for that.

Either Illyrio or Runestone are going to need to be pushed back to the first of the following month, it's looking like, unless the days required are shortened now with less travel time. I don't think we can stuff everything into next month that we'd like.

@Diomedon, make sure to include this somewhere in the plan. It was left over from the original turn plan. This is our shot to make sure Asha knows we're not planning on making the Iron Islands a sacrificial lamb to the Deep Ones.

--[] Sit down and have a very long chat with Asha Greyjoy concerning the Deep Ones, her future as ruler of the Iron Islands, and anything she might wish to speak of

I'm actually thinking about giving her the Staff of Fire for Tyrosh. Not much use to keep that thing in reserve forever and that's upgrading Aradia from sniper turret to aerial artillery.

Just remember it is not a Runestaff, but rather a traditional staff with a limited number of charges. It's currently Lya's main source of combat spells if we need to kill an army.

Let's not push back Illyrio. Leaving him this long is bad enough, but we really, really should take steps to curtail the influence of Tiamat as much as possible.

She isn't entirely Lya. Aradia is basically how Lya would be as fey huntress.
Probably will also be a lot colder and quieter then the original, let alone Mercy, since she is Water / Air.

Turn vote soon? The third day of the next year is the actual Festival itself. How about we drop by Runestone to knight Waymar and invite the Royces over for the Festival through teleport?

We can "ferry" them back daily long enough for discussions to be made.

I'm aware, but Lya has plenty spell slots to spare when we spec her for blasting, though I think that won't be necessary. She will be deployed together with Viserys after all and he can stomp an army all on his own just fine.

Runestone, unfortunately, is going to take longer than that. I would certainly prefer for it to only take a day or two, but DP won't let us skip around the meaningless smalltalk.

I don't think I'll be free to write up the Moonsong Debrief, as I'm traveling this evening (as in, I'm out the door in about ten minutes) and then spending time with some friends. I think @Azel had an idea of where she could go for next month for a shorter journey?

Mostly it's to see what she promised the natives, express both approval (she did come back successfully, and technically completed her mission) and disappointment, though admitting our own fault in selecting our most dazzling subject for a bit of subterfuge.

I wonder if our festival will receive a surprise visit of one "Bobert Raratheon, KING OF THE IRON THRONE!", a nice, if a bit loud large man, who gave our whores a small fortune, bet on every single match a bought a boatful of souvenirs.

@DragonParadox @Azel Noticed a typo in the Aradia character sheet on the front page.

You have her name spelled as Arcadia in the drop down spolier. Also, I think Azel changed her melee armament to an Adamantine dagger, but forgot to change it from the sword listed in her equipment.

[X] Speak to Moonsong, Theon, and Asha about their expedition
-[X] Keep it to a report, try to leave time for the CotF

[X] Speak to the Children of the Forest about their plans
-[X] Try to find out what they might want besides being here and seeing human lands. Ask for the reasons for their dwindling population, if it's something related to fertility or something else you can help with assure you''ll work on a way.
-[X] Meanwhile try to find out if they can use any magic, either inherently or from the Old Gods and if either of that could be taught to humans.

@DragonParadox, can you clarify how much time each of these would take? We have 5 days and these--Rhaella aside--are supposed to be conversations. They really shouldn't take more than a few hours.
