Did we remember to ask our lawyer if he knows the secrets of making Valyrian Steel?

I'm pretty sure his reply is (paraphrased) "Dammit, Viserys, I'm a lawyer, not a magical blacksmith!"

:V

On the subject of our existing Valyrian Steel swords, I'd prefer to keep our allocations as is. Valaena's sword was never about it being her primary weapon, it was always a political statement to our first dragonrider, and if she's successful in life (and has heirs) the Velaryons at Driftmark will be considered the cadet branch in time.

A replacement for Lamentation would be good, and something to keep in mind if we either get a smith capable of reforging Valryian steel without human sacrifice (here's hoping that it can be pulled off with mere animal sacrifice, even if it has to be a magical animal, that'd be a lot easier...) or find another Valryian Steel sword in the cities we plan on taking, but it's not going to be the dealmaker for Yohn. It'd be nice as a capstone, like on the eve of the invasion gifting it to House Royce.

By the time we hatch a dragon for Valaena, and honestly I want one for Viserys first, we will have another vs sword.

Royce alliance, otoh, needs to happen now-ish.

You guys do remind me that we are all totally
reactionary in the best ways, though. I can't believe we're bandying around things like "we should hunt down every wildling for potentially being a murdering asshole" which while probably true, directly contradicts the oath we're making to evacuate them all from the north and save their lives if we can help it.
You miss the point.

Y'all are gunning for the bear for being a murdering asshole, but not only is 99% of the adult Wildling population murdering assholes, the bear was more or less trying to help.

Not to mention our own subjects did way, way worse than the bear.

So this hate is completely unfounded and might cost us a tremendously valuable piece against the Others.
Where did you get that? She was pissed because she thought vengeance was at hand, but it was apparently never in the cards. Then when chided, and given an opportunity to grasp it, and the means to achieve it, was immediately satisfied by the arrangement and for all intents and purposes seemed ready to prepare herself for the day she fought the bear spirit through her own hard work.
She gets kudos for not blaming us.

She loses them because, after being told the fucking apocalypse is at hand, she still clings to vengeance. That the bear killed those people so there wouldn't be wights wearing the faces of their beloved trying to rip out their throats in the middle of the night.

As long as our supply of VS weapons is limited I want each one to be useful.

If we ever learn to reforge VS at little cost and effort we can hand them out to people who'll just hang them on a wall, until then we need them used to kill our foes.

@TotallyNotEvil
I think the problem some people people have with the bear is not that he's a murderer, most of our friends are.

It's what he represents, that "Fuck Civilisation and its protections"-Socialdarwinism.
That's one of the aspects of Wildling society we have to fight if we want them in the south without making constant trouble.

:???::???::???:

Viserys is a dragon. Why on earth would he need a Valyrian Dragon?

This has been pounded on time and time again. Giving Viserys a dragon is painfully redundant and a huge waste of resources. If you want a Targ to have the first dragon, give it to Dany or Rhaella.

Maybe. I don't think a Lamentation replacement as an opening offer is actually the right diplomatic move with the Royces. It's too close to appearing to outright buy loyalty, which will get their honor up. It's a fine gift after House Royce pledges itself...and with dragon hatching, we now have original flavor Valryian lawyer-priest and former dragon rider helping on the hatching problem.

I think treating them as useful weapons is simply a mistake. We can turn money into useful magical weapons. We cannot turn money into antique Valryian steel (And there is value in keeping Valryian steel as an antique and rare as it gives nobles something to obsess about as a status symbol). Their utility as a political tool and symbol of authority vastly outweighs their utility as a magical weapon.

Part MDCXXIII: From Children's Tales Sprung
From Children's Tales Sprung

Sixteenth Day of the Twelfth Month 292 AC

"Let the journey be swift, sure and as free from peril as can be," you call out, dagger in hand as you look to the carved face.

As the blade falls blood wells up thick and dark, already rotting as the creature brays out a final defiant call of rage, of hate, and ageless hunger, a final defiance of its fate. The thing twitches like a crushed spider and for a moment you fear it might deny death to lash out once more at the call of its master. Yet it is not to be, not now, not here. Before you can even finish shouting a warning, pale roots reach out from the forest floor and coil about the dying monster, breaking and tearing with impossible strength until all that remains are a few tattered remnants of flesh that rot with unnatural swiftness.

"Await the dawn," the voice of the Last Greenseer carries with it the echo of the power of the Old Gods that you have heard only once before. It is only when you rise to see the faces of your companions that you realize the words had been spoken aloud, or perhaps in the minds of all present.

"Does that happen often?" Harwood asks in a strangled voice as he looks about as a man unsure whether he is dreaming or awake.

"Not to us," Elle answers, shaking her head as though to clear away surprise. "Only ever saw a man given to the gods once, a murderer who broke guest-right and killed his host. He just hung there by his guts nice and quiet like."

The bear spirit snorts dismissively. "So much forgotten... You may sleep easily here tonight. Those who have joined me will keep the clearing safe from any other creatures they may send."

Ser Richard's look bespeaks of distrust louder than words at the declaration, and Elle outright spits in the grass, but Dany takes the chance to ask in a voice that could be at least counted civil if chilly, "Are we likely to see more like these beasts?"

"Long is Winter's hand, but its grasp is yet weak in these lands, the more so with the slaying of the Beast. Spies and vermin at most remain," the bear-man answers before lumbering off into the trees.

"What of the rest of the creatures?" Harwood asks, an acquisitive spark in his eye. "Might be good to take one with me so the comander will at least half-believe me."

"Aye," the wildling woman laughs. "They would make great trophies. Pity they are all burned up."

"Well now, its not like I would just throw them out after showing him now could I," the ranger answers. "I figure passing traders would pay a pretty penny for a wolf's head with antlers..."

What do you do about the lesser Peryton corpses?

Seventeenth Day of the Twelfth Month 292 AC

The night passes without incitement, the growls of bears coming from the woods making it clear that the bear-men kept up their self-appointed vigil. Yet with the first rays of dawn a creature out of legend slipped out from the eves of the forest. The softest thump like bear feet on moss draws your eyes under a overhanging branch.

Small and slight, only a few inches taller than Dany... nut brown skin dappled like a deer's draped in a dress of sewn leaves. The figure rights itself with wild grace to reveal eyes glowing gold and silted like a cat's amidst a fine-featured face atop which rests a crown of flowers such as you have never seen. On meeting your gaze she gives a soft sigh... of annoyance, perhaps, before offering a rueful smile and singing, no, speaking in something that to your ear sounds as akin to the tongue of the fey as Low Valyrian and High.

No whisper of the blood do you need. Few children are there in the Seven kingdoms who did not at least once fall asleep to tales of the Children of the Forest, first to dwell in these lands when the woods stretched from the lands of Always-Winter to the borderlands of Dorne ere men first steeped upon these shores. For all the wonders and the horrors you had seen, you never thought you would see one of them in the flesh upon the living world.

She touches her ear and speaks again, looking a touch impatient. Guessing her intent you wake Dany who rolls awake in amidst a riot of golden feathers and just as you had done looks in wonder at the strange visitor. She too had heard tales of the Children in a time before the monsters and marvels of a child's fancy had awoken in deadly earnest. Softly your sister speaks and incantation spun of dreams to know any tongue and speak it also.

"She says she is to guide us where we must go and... that her name is so long noontime would come if she were to sing it all for me." Dany sounds amused at the least.

What do you do?

OOC: If you do not choose to have the Peryton bodies skinned, then the wildling and ranger are not with you when the Child of the Forest arrives.

It's like this but replace horses with Viserys the Dragon riding a dragon

@DragonParadox, regarding the Peryton corpses, we already took the one most intact. If we manage to take it as a trophy would you let us use Make Whole to restore it to mint condition so we can display it?

I want Elle and Harwood to see the Child of the Forest. That should really help hammer in, "Yes, the dragon king deals with legends."

EDIT: Also, sure, they can have the extra trophies. Should help quite a bit with lending credibility to the stories they tell the other crab men and the Night's Watch.

"I killed a monster with the body of an eagle, a wolf's teeth, and a deer's antlers!"
"Bullocks, you did not!"
*pulls out Peryton skin and head*
"This one tried to eat my heart."

Rings of Sustenance require a week to attune to the wearer and become effective. Even if they didn't, I would not support lending them to others.

[X] Ask Dany to Dreamcast a Keep Watch spell on Harwood and Elle, so that they can skin the Peryton corpses tonight in exchange for half of the remains.

@Goldfish if only we had those Gentle Repose coins now, maybe something for the crafting list. Dont think theyre too expensive... and if it means more loot because conserved bodies. :)

You hit everything with firebrand, but yes there are two merely singed corpses you can fix up easily.
Perfect. One for us, one for Harwood so the Night's Watch believes him, and Elle can have her pick of the rest.
