I dare say that limitation can be overcome through the Stone Shape making the blocks perfectly uniform. The big issue with natural stone are the huge variations in quality while concrete is very reliable and consistent when made properly, but a very skilled mason can gauge these imperfections and compensate.
According to modern building regulations and architecture wisdom, the cathedral of Cologne should collapse any second.

It's the relatively weak tensile strength and propensity to stress fractures of stone as a building material. The Cathedral of Cologne, while tall, also has a lot more empty space (to allow all those very important arches) than what we usually envision for an apartment building, with stacks of living space atop one another. It's the property of concrete's internal structure actually bonding to steel as if it were stone that lets it distribute the tensile stress to the steel, and the fact that the steel and concrete have an almost perfect expansion ratio that lets us build so tall.

Like, we probably can build taller than anyone else in planetos, but you start hitting diminishing returns in terms of space as you keep needing to make the bases of your walls thicker and thicker to simply hold up the weight above. Outside of castles where super thick walls are pretty much the point, I'm not sure we'd want to go too vertical. Particularly with warehouses where it's mainly a space to carry stuff in, store it, and carry it out. I'm going to check out some resources, but my back of the envelop guesstimate would be we'd want to aim for 3-4 story residential spaces, if we were going more vertical.

With the fused stone, we'd have the advantage of being much more resistant to earthquakes than normal, though.

@Azel, @Duesal, and those interested in investigating the Cheesemonger. We might have a mystical ally in Pentos that we can reach out to if he still lives.

Hmmm... Potential ally, but we'd need to figure out his motives to see if they're compatible with our own.

I'm always going to carry the suspicion that agents that appear "good" have nefarious overlords who they work for. For all we know this could be a devil in disguise who's doing his best to disrupt the political stability of Pentos for his own gain rather than simply to free the slaves. I'm also not very impressed that he inspired a revolution among people who have no chance of winning (no weapons, no training, up against professional soldiers) and were likely brutally put down for the attempt.

Of course, if this is the real deal and we can actually agree on his goals then I'd be more than happy to work with him, provided he changes his methods to something more productive and conducive to our world conquest.

I think the end of third paragraph is neatly reinforcing the beginning of the second.

Depending on how rocky SD is and what the water table looks like, we could take this opportunity to build down as much as up. I know it's close to the water line, but what does the elevation of the destroyed section of town look like, @DragonParadox?

One thing to keep in mind is the sheer effort needed to carry water in buckets up multiple flights of stairs. Even if you could build higher than that all-but the most desperate would refuse to live higher.

Since the Wildfire was running rather fast, there should be a noticeable slope.

And yeah. I wouldn't even want to go more then 3-4 stories. Maybe 5 at some places and install pulleys to make hauling stuff up more convenient.

Part MCCCXLV: An Unwelcome Messenger
An Unwelcome Messenger

Twentieth Day of the Tenth Month 292 AC

Garin had been rather startled at the audacious plan you and Lya had unveiled for the dock area. Part challenge to your enemies, part opportunity for Lya to test out her more daring theories on the working of magic and how it may be used to create for the betterment of all, and most of all an opportunity for the people of the Deep to feel like they are doing more than rebuilding... more than getting by against the horrors all around. It will take the better part of a month for Lya and Xor to see if their theories will bear fruit... and perhaps more to find a singer skilled enough to play the songs of stone that must be sung. You have quietly authorized Alinor to see that the people who lost everything in the blaze are supported from the treasury until the project is done.

Lost 220 Gold

All too soon night begins to fall and the time comes at last to seek your bed after pouring over nautical charts and ledgers much of the day. Waymar and Dany approach you, the first looking troubled, the other excited... Not the most reassuring of encounters, you think, though there is a part of you that could do with some time away from numbers that had taken to dancing before you even in dreams of late.

As chance would have it, dreams and portents from lands far off are much on Waymar's mind. While standing in the Godswood to pick the fruit touched by the blessing of endurance, he heard a voice from the tree's shadow, a message from Runestone, purportedly from his young sister... a message of support and hope, spoken in the hard tones of a clanswoman from the Mountains of the Moon.

"I worry what those savages might ask of Ysi," Waymar says, then sounding as though he is trying to convince you as much as himself he adds, "She is just a little girl, she could not have gone to them."

Dany clears her throat meaningfully. "How old did you say Ysilla was?" From the gleam in her eye it is clear your sister would rather like to meet a girl of an age with her who dared the savage peaks of the Mountains of the Moon.

Waymar does not take the notion well, looking outright alarmed. "We must speak to her in dreams. I know there is a risk, but..." he trails off helplessly.

"She is kin to you, no more needs be said," you assure the young Valeman.

"How many can you carry across the waters?" you ask your sister, all the more resolved to stand at her side after her last encounter with the twisted children of the Wyrm Mother.

"I could carry a score or more with me," she answers thoughtfully. "The true limit is how many we dare take on such a long excursion. Much like a forest at night, the Dream is full of dangers and ever likely to betray the presence of those who do not belong."

Who do you take on the dream journey to meet Ysilla Royce?

OOC: Will be updating Dany's character sheet before the next part, don't worry.

It's good to see that Waymar still can put his foot in his mouth like a champ.

[X] Viserys, Waymar, and Tyene will accompany Dany in a Dream journey to Runestone.
-[X] Every relevant buff will be placed on the group before departing, so as not to tempt us to perform any unnecessary Dreamcasting.

I'd expect flooding to be a problem, given that the area we're remodeling is right next to the harbor. Drainage is always an issue when going underground. I'd be more a fan of proposing maybe half a story underground, except SD seems rather wet/foggy quite often. Even if we escape outright flooding, the wet and the damp is going to promote sickness. We have magical healing, so no epidemics, but it's still not what we want to promote.

As for dreamwalking...Dany+Waymar+Viserys seems fairly solid. Anyone else close to a level up?

I wonder how Dalla would see us. She would have expected a hard way to do a sending when, hello two surprise Heart Trees sprang out from nowhere.

Hrm, I'm starting to lean towards traveling light. Viserys+Dany+Waymar seem quite solid by themselves.

[X] Viserys, Waymar, Dany, no buffs

Lets get there quickly. In the dream Dany is a fully qualified healer.

Updated my plan to only include relevant buffs.

And just because Dany can heal doesn't mean she should. It's like having Lya do our blasting; she's capable, but not optimal. Plus Tyene needs XP. Everyone that spent time transporting the insect head on the Doomship is lagging behind.

@DragonParadox, Dany has enough levels in Dreamweaver to target persons with a sufficiently detailed description. Shouldn't Waymar be able to provide one for his sister?

Edit: I'm perfectly fine with a flat "Nope". I just wanted to bring it up since this is the first time that would be relevant.

The thing to remember is Ysilla is a growing child and Waymar has not seen her in almost three years, his description would be off by a considerable margin.

Alright. Just checking.

On that note, couldn't we get a Runestone teleport point by Scrying her? Just for later.
Waymer seems far too worked up to accept delays and we would need her out of Runestones wards first to Scry her.

The party has reached a level where Surprise Aspect of Tiamat, wouldn't be a Rocks Fall, but a improved version of our Nightmare Dragon battle.
