To make something clear: The pearl is a scroll. You are not a wizard so it is a one-use item for you even if you decipher it.
So was it the effect of the user that summoned a evil elemental or just the item as a whole? No just something with the Evil descriptor that was cast on the elemental plane of Fire causing a Harginn to form.
We could also give it back to the Priests. So fun thought, but is anyone considering how our knight would feel if we kept the chalice?
As I get the feeling he wouldn't be all that hot on the idea of us keeping a more or less demon summoning item from his point of view. So we might want to weigh if the possible gains for it would be worth the possible loss of trust with our knight.
Lastly, if we do end up keeping the fire summoning chalice, how do we plan to usensure it without tipping our hand here about the magic? As summoning fire elements isn't really a magic that is easy to disguise or hide.
True, but that might put us on their Rader and I'm all for avoiding that like the plague. As those guys are nothing but bad juju and if they get any inkling about us having magic, we can either be on the altar or get recruited.
SSo was it the effect of the user that summoned a evil elemental or just the item as a whole?
Also, would it be possible for use to study both items under a detect magic for a minute or two here first to get a better understanding before making a final choice?
Ah, good to know and thanks for clearing that up for me.No the process goes like this:
- Necromancer McEvil is walking around the elemental plane of fire using Evil spells.
- The taint of one of these spells lingers creating a Harginn
- Later someone binds a Harginn a Mephit and maybe more things to the Chalice.
Wait, so if someone later summons the Harginn with the chalice, it could tell them about our abilities?
Ah, good to know and thanks for clearing that up for me.
Though what about my question of doing a quick detect magic on the two items here for more intel?
Not true, as we should also get to see if there is more then one magic aura/effect on the items and what tier of power the magic auras would be.Detect magic is not Analyze Dwemoer. It would just tell you that the item has a conjuration aura.
Not true, as we should also get to see if there is more then one magic aura/effect on the items and what tier of power the magic auras would be at with a spellcraft check.
As that info would help tell us if keeping and/or studying them would be worth the risk.

True, but learning that the chalice is at least a 3rd circle/tier spell item and at best a 6th, is helpful info to have.Still would not tell you that much:
- Chalice: moderate conjuration
- Pearl: It is a scroll, no intrinsic magic in it.
In the end, the mistress (and possibly the fence or his brother or whoever else he showed it to) could possibly blab about the chalice, so keeping it seems a bit too risky.
What I'm more curious about is where the chalice came from. The description was 'ancient fire-blackened chalice marked with strange flowing writing that looked as unusually new', so it seems to me that someone has created/enhanced this magic item recently. I wish we could ask who he stole it from.
[X] Keep pearl
[X] Present chalice to the Thieves' guild as the lost treasure
I agree with ironforge nothing good will come from that chalice.
A what?
