Of Tricks and Trials
Tenth Day of the Fourth Month 292 AC
Volantis has not changed since first you laid eyes upon it, and a good thing too, seeing as the most likely change would have been envelopment in hungry sorcerous flames that would scour it of all life: the sight of branded slaves still fills you with quiet horror at the most repulsive and twisted of the Freefold's legacies, the hathays of the nobles just as resplendent as they are carries through the crowded streets, never more than one misstep from crushing the life from some unfortunate salve or lesser freeman. Ah... Volantis, you would not see it burned to ashes but that is as far as your sympathies will go.
You came alone for the first journey, appearing in a shadowed alleyway in the new city so as not to cause a scene. A few coppers to an urchin get you directions to the warehouses that usually hold trade goods for the barges heading north up the Rhyone to Selhorys. Trade had been disrupted there recently so it costs you a pittance to rent en entire warehouse and guards for the few days you shall need them for. A few demonstrations of magic put paid any thoughts said guards may have of cheating you.
Lost 5 Gold
The giant axe-wielding bull-man only serves to reinforce the lesson. "This place smell strange," he snorts, pawing at the ground nervously. "Food soon?"
"Didn't you eat at midday?" Tyene asks.
"Was too scared and... and wants-to-go..." the giant struggles for words.
"Excited," you provide with an encouraging smile. It's hard to tell how much of the problem is a lack of wits and how much is simply forgetting language... still the willingness to strive is admirable.
"Excited," ho nods to himself before saying the word quietly to himself again and again to fix it in memory.
"We'll get you something to eat soon," you reassure as hr four of you head out of the warehouse.
Before you can take more than a few steps however Glyra pulls at your sleeve. Curious you look down at her. Today she is wearing dusty patched clothes that might fit in any city from Lannisport to Quarth save for the wide-brimmed hat with a long green feather of some exotic bird set into it. The eyes looking up from beneath the shadow of her peculiar head-gear are bright blue like the cloudless sky gleaming as always with mischief but also apprehension.
"Yes?" you encourage her halting in the shadow of the warehouse to talk.
"Um... you know the thing I did last time I was in the city, with Maelor?" she begins round-aboutly.
Grave robbing... You nod again, there's hardly anything more to say on the subject, especially where it might be overheard.
"I'd like to pay back the people I hurt somehow... not with coin," she hurries to add. "More like teaching them or helping them by playing tricks. It's
important."
The way she speaks makes you think here is more than newborn guilt at work here. "How so?" you ask, intrigued.
"It's how I get stronger now," the little girl who is no mortal creature explains, "helping people by playing tricks. Since these are people
I hurt it would have more of a swing to it..." Glyra mimes hitting something with an invisible club.
"Are you
compelled to do this?" you ask, perhaps a little more sharply than you intended.
"No more than I was forced to eat the hearts outa things," she replies. "I'd
like to though. Can I?"
Before you can answer Tyene interjects. "Do you have to do these good deeds alone?"
"Yes," the gremlin confirms, adding: "And not tell anyone 'xactly what tricks I'm goin' to play or how."
What do you do?
[] Let Glyra play her tricks (Alignment shifts 2 points to Chaotic)
[] No, this is not the time (Alignment shifts 2 points to Lawful)
OOC: And here's your answer to the Glyra question. It's a little more inconvenient than eating monsters, but on the other hand she is no longer actively malicious when it comes to interpreting orders she does not like, so still a net plus in my oppinion.
