I would add that an Imperial Decree should be passed down a 'Gaesus Order' mandating that in the course of service to the Imperium that any servant of the Empire who has previous history in a region that could publicly embarrass the Empire is required to report any such activities to their superiors to ensure no serious issues arise unexpectedly.
And to be fair to the person making the disclosure, their superiors Must treat any such disclosures as confidential and there will not be any negative effects on their career for all disclosures that happen before coming under Imperial Law.

Whether something will embarrass the throne is a really subjective judgement. I mean let me put it this way, do you know how many morally reprehensible things Salladhor Saan has done?

Neither does he and that is the point.

@Azel I like the compromise. I was going to type up something similar but thankfully decide to read all the votes first thus seeing yours.

@DragonParadox This is also sort of out of left field, but can Viserys support paladins with his divine source? They don't even get fifth level spells, so if he could would they still have a level cap?

For all the flaws of that particular class there's a surprising amount of paladin gear that can make them all kinds of fun.

He is lawful so yes he could, though you do not really have many places such could spring from. Maybe Waymar's Griffon Knights?
Excellent, though I'm not sure if that would work for some of the things I have in mind.

I think they greatest immediate value from paladins for us would be to have them double down on their role as a combat medic, and I don't know how many of those guys would be interested in it.

If we could get some people in training for it they wouldn't take much gear to get really good at the job.

Bracers of the Merciful Knight increase their level by 4 for the purposes of calculating uses/day and total hp of their lay on hands ability, so that alone would make any level 2 paladin with a good cha score really useful.

Add on an Ornament of Healing Light and their lay on hands feature gains a 15 ft range.

Their healing spells aren't bad either, so our medic knights could easily stack up all kinds of useful effects to supplement their base heal-beam. Conduit of Life alone would make them stupidly durable too.

Any chance that I've misjudged them and some of Waymar's knights/squires would be interested in becoming the most popular people on the battlefield?

The Praetori and Legion would also work. Former more than the latter.
Or the Inqusition for that matter.

We have plenty of Lawful organisations running around who already answer to Viserys.

Paladins are heavy on the code of conduct even by the standards of lawful institutions. The inquisition is rather too fond of shades of grey for to produce many of them I would say. The others seem more likely.

Depends on your code of conduct. What the Inqusition is doing, being the Imperators jackboot, clicks quite well with a Paladin of Tyranny. So I'd expect more that the Inqusition has a heavy Evil skew in the Paladins it produces, while the other institutions wouldn't show that.

Would it be viable to start dedicated training programs for various build of paladin affiliated with their intended role or is this the sort of thing we more or less have to let happen naturally?

Maybe we should devote a Ministry of Magic action next month to ramp up recruiting for Imperial casters that derive their power from Viserys.

After all, they are a life insurance for Viserys.

Thirteenth Day of the Eighth Month 294 AC

Hanging is unacceptable, of course, for all the reasons your mother has named and more. You cannot be seen turning the law into a tool of diplomatic convenience. For one you would likely annoy Malarys to no end, no matter how little patience he has for quick talking pirates. "Having poor judgement is not a crime, " you conclude aloud. "But it is cause enough to take note." You turn towards your mother. "I do not think it would be unreasonable for someone who has stayed silent on such an important point to be called untrustworthy..."

"And untrustworthy people have no place in the service," she finishes. "Shall Gaesus be stripped of all official positions within the Diplomatic service or only some of them?"

"All," you reply firmly. "It will hopefully send a signal to any other 'forgetful' souls in the service before they make any similar mess for us."

"Excellent. It may not be a hanging, but it gets him out of the service in a way that is very clearly a punishment. That should hopefully unruffle some feathers among those who are only marginally involved," your mother rises from her seat content.

Before she can speak words of parting, Lya interjects, "I just hope the the Walani will not start looking for similar men among the navy or the Silver Serpent sailors and officers. They are liable to find quite a few, unless I miss my guess."

"How would they go about sifting though so many?" This time your mother cuts herself off ruefully. "Sorcery... damn. You would think wielding it would be enough for one not to forget about its power, but the habits of a lifetime are not so easy to break."

"Divinations and portents from their gods specifically," Lya continues thoughtfully. "If there are any among the priests of the Isles who do not like the hand of the Imperium, now would be the time to be particularly careful of their doings. We should either prepare arguments against them or buy them off. That would be my call, but then I will freely admit that I am no diplomat."

"Yet you would be a great help to one nonetheless." There is nothing in her genuinely appreciative words of the supposed 'inevitable' conflict between a woman and her goodmother. A far cry indeed from the first time you broached the subject to her of wedding Lya, and you could not be more glad for it. "A pity the House of Mirrors could not see this coming, but there are only so many hours in a day and so many questions one thinks to asks."

"Even if you could somehow map all the questions, it would not get you perfect foresight," Lya says half to herself.

"Because the gods would be opposed to giving us any such thing?" Your mother asks, curious enough to linger now.

"Because the world is not a construct of pure order, fate does not hold absolute sway," Lya replies, a little surprised at the question, but willing to expand on it nonetheless. "It's like pushing a boulder up hill, only it gets heavier and heavier the closer you get to the top. Foresight starts to fail in unpredictable ways or falls silent. Or at least that is the theory. You would have to build a working model of all the Spheres to test it, and that is not quite within the research budget for this quarter," she sighs and gives you a dark look for the 'oversight', though she cannot quite keep the corners of her mouth from twitching up in a smile that, were you alone, would cause you to kiss her on the spot.

"Fascinating. Could you recommend a book on the subject. My own understanding of magic is more inclined to the past not the future..." Perhaps unsurprisingly, your mother takes the cue to leave soon after, her parting look one of amused indulgence, almost enough to draw a blush, but you have grown very fast indeed with glamors.

What next?

OOC: I know this is short, but in this case I really could not think of a tie in that would not be jarring.

Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP.

That would be a valid action yeah
How do you feel about classes that don't grant divine spells directly, but involve drawing on divine energy to empower arcane magic or to fuel class abilities?

Silver Pyromancer, for example, seems almost perfect as a multiclass option for our fire sorcerers. It's not that powerful in it of itself, but could be a really flavorful way to integrate the Imperial faith into the Scholarum. The turn undead requirement is a problem for that, but if we're tweaking it anyway we could just drop that and the single class feature that actually relies on it.

Evangelist would also be a neat addition to our propaganda core and as morale officers in the legion if we snip off the atonement bits.

Is this sort of thing something Viserys could support with divine source?

The first one is fine, I'll have to think about the second.
