[X] Azel

Also I'm re-reading the quest again, and I am highly amused by how squeamish everyone is about blood magic and how worried they are about awakening Yss pre-Sorcerer's Deep. Nowadays we literally have an endless shoveling of demons into our sacrifice machines, more or less.

Well, the thread acclimated well when they realized that even without all the blood magic, we tended to slaughter the shit out of the endless cavalcade of murderous villains of the week. Applying that mindset on a wider scale... well... the logical conclusion is almost inevitably going to be systemized blood magic rituals fueling grand workings that would have had the Valyrians asking for restraint.

Well, not really. I think we really only break out the blood magic for specific events, rather than making our entire empire dependent upon a steady flow of the stuff.

We make sure our blood sacrifice creates permanent or enduring effects instead of killing a never born infant whenever we want to turn on our lightbulbs.

Also, seeing Dany as a sorcerer and not a cleric, and no one being able to teleport anywhere, and not even a single visit to other planes... it's just weird.

Viserys' character sheet has been updated to include his new Mythic rank.

I also added that Stone of Good Luck we looted from the Violet Court to his inventory. A constant +1 Luck bonus to saving throws and skill checks is nice.

EDIT: I also went ahead and added the eight slotless psionic Mind Blanks we've purchased over the last couple months to the character sheets of Dany, Richard, Lya, Garin, Waymar, Tyene, Rina, and Malarys. Should have done that sooner, but I was slacking and distracted. We can buy three more next month so that Maelor, Vee, and Xor will have one, too, so all of the Companions will have double Mind Blanks. Rejoice, @Duesal!

Hell yes. So close to having all companions double Mind Blanked. :D

On the subject of Mind Blanks, we need this for Viserys' solar in the new Imperial Palace:
Secure Cavern: The entire cavern is affected by a mind blank spell. No one in the cavern can be affected by devices and spells that detect, influence, or read emotions and thoughts, up to and including miracle or wish. Even a scrying attempt that scans an area does not work. Strong abjuration; CL 15th; Craft Wondrous Item, mind blank; Price 60,000 gp.

Lair Wards are great. This one is the Mind Blank room thing we have in the Shadow Tower.

Part MMMDCLXXXV: Of Ruined Realms
Of Ruined Realms

Nineteenth Day of the Fourth Month 294 AC

For a long moment you consider your options. Pressed for time is an understatement of where you are at the moment. Thus you ask Alysande to arrange meetings with both for next month when you are less pressed for time.

There is little doubt in your mind that Gramdal will come to Volantis with the promise of gold and power on the table. As for Nandazda Aoq you ask that she choose a neutral location to meet with not only yourself but Dalla as the most knowledgeable person you know about warging, or at least the most knowledgeable who can spare the time for such a meeting. Bloodraven is the only person you know who is likely even more busy than you at the moment and he is likely to stay that way. The war he is preparing for is still far off. Speaking of distant wars the rest of the report is mixed at best.

Meereen

Though Malarys' careful hand has managed to keep the situation in Meereen stable it was not without cost, and of a sort that may have ramifications far beyond the petty politics of the city and its puppet lords. One of your umbral spies was captured and stolen way when it tried to track a harbinger devil to his safe house.

Fortunately the quick deployment of the covert reserve recovered the spy before it could be delivered to the depths of Nessus. Additionally your agents were able to recover shadow-forged lenses which grant a sort of 'soul sight', allowing the bearer to see an umbral servant even when hiding in their targets' shadow. Though the lenses are fragile and almost debilitating to use in the way they overpower the senses both mortal and arcane, the news that baatezu, or at least those loyal to Asmodeus, will be able to see your most well-hidden of spies is not a pleasant one.

Salted Earth Contested Roll 6d6: 22 vs ???

Lost 1,000 IM (Resurrection costs; Raise Dead used due to recovered bodies)

Soul Sight Lens Discovered (Can see shadow merged Umbral Spies and Stalkers at the cost of -10 to Spot, Listen and Spellcraft; loss of Blindsight and Blindsense)

Astapor

Azema's efforts in Astapor were if anything a touch too effective in inciting fear and anger against the Unsullied. Several high profile killings, orchestrated with the aid of molds, mind magic and in one case careful use of glamors against those warded against both of the former, led to panicked meetings in the city forum by some of the most powerful of the Good Masters. In what the alu demon describes scornfully as 'a mob for those too bloated and wine-sick to pick up a torch' the city almost ordered a decimation of all Unsullied contingents regardless of origin, forcing the agents of baator to tip their hand through calling in last minute favors.

Though this seems to have left the city more in the grip of Hell, at least openly, it is a far more open arrangement than the ice devil in command of the city might have preferred as seen in the attempted assassination of Azema in her assumed guise, foiled by her Praetori guards. You could have done without the news that they were doing more in her bedroom than guarding her, but this is Azema. By now you might grow suspicious if she didn't at the very least put something inappropriate in a report.

Salted Earth Contested Roll 7d6: 30 vs ???

Yunkai

Finally in Yunkai Garin was able to trace the poison used against the Inquisition, though even his skills could not extend to recovering the formula. As he informs you dryly in an in-person report, "I thought it unwise to invade Hell at this moment."

The poison, called Hag's Kiss by captured devils, is never stored anywhere in the mortal world because exposure to this sphere for more than two hours renders it useless, at least useless as poison. In an odd twist of irony Hag's Kiss that had been left to degrade becomes a potion that can strengthen the mind and grant pleasant dreams.

By manipulating the minds and memories of prisoners Garin did find who brews it however. "The name's a sham to throw us off the scent. It's apparently made by an enslaved azata alchemist, partly from their own blood."

Salted Earth Contested Roll 10d6: 37 vs ??

What next?

OOC: I rushed this out because it's late. The XP is probably just going to be edited in the last of the fey arc.

Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP.

The development of the Soul Sight Lenses is unfortunate for us, but they're not exactly a total counter. Each Umbral Spy, between skill ranks and racial and size bonuses, has a +14 Hide bonus. Anyone using a Lens to find an Umbral Spy is going to have to have a decent Spot skill and roll well to overcome that and the -10 Spot penalty they're suffering from.

Umbral Stalkers are much, much stealthier than Umbral Spies, with a total Hide bonus of +46. Between that and the -10 penalty to use the Lens, an Umbral Stalker might as well be Invisible.
