Rumors and Reports of Westeros Part Two

Twenty Ninth Day of the Second Month 294 AC

The Iron Isles

The Hidden Battle of Harlaw: The wisdom of assigning forces to aid Rodrik the Reader, Regent of Pyke, had proven itself threefold this month as he was the target of an assassination attempt by Drowned Men warped by their congress with the Deep Ones and wielding powers of the mind, saved only by the presence of his guard of black knights whose unwavering dead gazes could not be turned aside. Worse was yet to come however, as one of his ships was lost from unnatural storms and raising serious doubts about his willingness to 'pay the gold price'. Another ship was saved by some of Qyburn's corpse-stitched krakens from what seems to be opportunistic Deep Ones. The Reader suspects that the Deep Ones may be testing the proverbial waters, seeing what manner of protectors were summoned to the protection of the Iron Isles.

Lost 12 Black Knights

Breaking Seastone:
Following months of research into the origin of the Seastone Chair and the chains of the Drowned Ones which bound the Ironborn, Ser Harras Harlaw has discovered that this was not the fist instance of the Ironborn rejecting the Drowned God. Harwyn Hardhand, first king of the Isles and the Rivers, a man denigrated for his Andal queen and 'foreign ways', apparently never sat on the Seastone Chair. Newly discovered journals from the septon of Harwyn's queen indicate that the ancient king knew about the taint from some 'sorcerous source'.

The Stormlands

Letters from the North: Much to Stannis' surprise he has recently received a letter from White Harbor cautiously asking about the state of the Royal Fleet 'in the face of foreign threats'. It is couched as a question in the event that the Manderly fleet will have to join Stannis, but according to Maester Cressen it is more likely that Wyman Manderly is checking to see if Stannis has any intention to sail out at all. Cressen intends to reply with stiff platitudes while avoiding outright lies. You can imagine Stannis gritting his teeth at the notion, but fortunately he will not have to do so now.

Fire in Raintown: A blaze burned though Raintown this month with rumors of magical involvement hanging over it. Though how much of it is truth and how much is Lannister propaganda is hard to know because the principal guilty party involved is 'The Dragon in the East'. There has been an attempted attack on a merchant captain from the Deep, though the crowd was calmed by the local septon before more than a few rotten vegetables could fly.

Dorne

Final Steps in the Dance: With the hour of the conquest approaching, Doran Martell has begun to cautiously give out more information to his lords about just where his loyalties lie and why in order to prevent the proud Dornishmen's hackles being raised by imperial law. Thankfully the existence of Dorne's ancient High Kingship, not inherited but elected, provides a if not a precedent than at least context for the Voices. According to Doran it is counted a foreign thing to bring to the shores of Dorne, but not one that is seen as an over reach of kingly power.

Dawn's Pledge: Ser Andrew Dayne sent his young son Edric to Sunspear to foster, given he counts barely five years this can only be counted a firm pledge of support for Martell policies and thus implicitly for you, though Doran does worry about the boy's safety given how many more traditional and pious interests the fostering could upset. He asks that you send some manner of inconspicuous flesh-forged guard if you can.

How do you answer Doran?

I've been rereading all the Aemon parts, and lately he's started saying this every single time he's on-screen...
Maybe despite our best efforts he's going senile? He's really, really old.

If 'pious' lords try to assassinate a child, catching them in the attempt would be very useful for dismantling them.

Nah, I suspect that was a product of DP's high update-rate.
He hits a few points about tertiary (or rarer) characters repeatedly when they do occasionally appear.

When Mel was rarely-seen for example, the viewpoint-character always mentally noted her being older than she looked, always in very similar manner.

Mel is different by virtue of being an important cleric of R'hllor, just like Bloodraven is different by virtue of being the greenseer on the weirwood throne. Neither of them are comparable to Aemon.

That fire in Raintown was our doing, or the Deep Ones?

Or maybe their experiments getting wrong and we taking the fall?

He gets a Black Champion with a Greater Bloodclot Mold and a few Hunter Bioconstructs.

Not much we can do against the storm attack plan without deploying a Moonchaser though.

To the esteemed Lord Wyman Manderly of Whiteharbor,

in consideration of the tactical situation in the Narrow Sea and given the result of the last naval battles against the forces of the Dragon, both by the Royal Navy of Westeros and reports of engagements with Ghiscari fleets, I would like to inquire if you have partaken in mind altering substances before penning your letter.

Sincerely,
Lord Stannis Baratheon of Storms End

Okay, so major cities are White Harbor, Gulltown, Duskendale, King's Landing, LannisportGreyport, and Oldtown, with extra naval settlements being Dragonstone, Driftmark, Bear Island, the Iron Islands, Sunspear, and Storm's End. There are a few others but these are arguably the most important ones. How much would twelve new Aquatic Defense Groups cost us?

A little too blunt, it would imply treason. It does not matter if sailing out would be suicide, the admiral of the royal fleet is supposed to say he would sail if he were ordered to.

To the esteemed Lord Wyman Manderly of Whiteharbor,

recent experiments conducted by our Maesters with the aid of foreign loremasters have shown that wood is in fact a flammable substance, contrary to prior assumptions.
Until this considerable flaw is corrected I'm afraid the Royal Fleet will take some time to get in a combat-ready state.

Sincerely,
Lord Stannis Baratheon of Storms End

Speaking of wooden ships, how long since we burned down the previous fleet? Because I'm not sure they even have a Royal Fleet in the first place, or had the time to build one at this point.

@Duesal, keeping in mind that the groups are really basic compared to what illithids could pull out and would not keep out an actual invasion, but would slow one down somewhat?

Total of 4,137,130 IM, to somewhat protect 12 cities-
...unless my phone fudged me one or two strings of numbers above. Then it's more. Cant check rn.

We didn't actually burn down the previous fleet. We just showed up, captured Stannis and Davos, and then scared a bunch of them into surrendering and the rest into full retreat back to King's Landing.

Honestly that price tag is worth it for the benefits of guarding our shores at least somewhat.

One of our Shadow Cat servitors would make a really great and inconspicuous guard for a five year old child.

Triple the number and you can be assured the Squids will not have a good time attacking any if the cities, unless they make some serious preparations from within.
...which they likely will regardless, but that's not really the point.
I don't really have one here to begin with.

These guys aren't really the meatgeinders to kill thousands and thousands of Saghuain, they are the scary things that go 'hump' in the night, since lead-laden Soulforged with plant-monsters inside them are essentially Mjndblanked from the Squids.

@DragonParadox, would a Black Champion count as inconspicuous?

Generally speaking... Does he want something to watch over the boy or something that can repaint his palace with everyone looking at him funny?

I think a Shadow Cat and maybe a Vigilant Hunter would be more appropriate. One could remain in obvious sight, appearing as nothing more than a simple domesticated cat, while the other constantly on watch, Invisible and hidden from sight.

This is starting to worry me. The Neck making its moves now of all time and now Wyman asking Stannis what he will do against Viserys. This seems like the North preparing for war.

If they are, they're already half dead in the water.

The Umbers and the Mormonts, while not willing to fight Ned Stark, are also determined to not fight Viserys, so they'll prepare their soldiers very slowly and give lots of bullshit excuses as to their delays.

And the Boltons are outright vassals, so that's another chink in the North's armor.

While the Manderlys are famously loyal to the Starks, they are also intimately aware of how dumb fighting us is. I suspect most of their effort is going to be spent trying to keep Ned alive and away from the fighting and hoping he's smart enough to surrender.

We should just show up using Loresong and a Lyre of Building and fix the damage. That would be hilarious. We can even sing a song at the same time ridiculing Tywin.

Edit: We'd do it as Buttercup, of course... no worries.
