Yah, alright, I think we should think defenses for the Underwater Quarter.
It is, well, the one part open to the sea the most.
:V

I want to see it eventually turn into a whole new city of spires, some rising slightly above water...

But for now- shall we raise a bank of SD around it, so it is at least mostly circled by land, and not by ~20 to 30%?

I feel like defending it would be kinda, well, horribly difficult otherwise, especially if theoretical enemy actually makes it to the "city"-part.

@Crake, I assume Blight's Bane should be put on continuing this action, then?

Gotta be very carefuly there, we don't want too much over water, or it just takes the light away from the underwater-city.
Kinda like skyscrapers, but worse because seawater blocks a lot of light anyway, even if it's relativly clear.

We don't want anything even remotly like a hive-city where the lower levels rarely see any sunlight.

Hmm, the way the Tritons are uniting their tribes is kinda reminiscent of something I've read before. Mmm, probably the Bible.

It helps that most of our Forge servitors are aquatic, or capable of functioning underwater, and the majority of them live in the waters around SD.

I wouldn't be opposed to raising a good sized sea wall to help protect our underwater district. It needn't be a full wall like a traditional city defense, but rather one designed to break up underwater currents, especially those caused by supernatural means.

----------------------Research Actions--------------------

[X] In Hatred Ancient, a Soul Restored: The former Priestess of Spider-Goddess Lollth, cursed into form of a staff for centuries, has not forgotten the slight of her former Mistress. Her soul may have been damaged too much to simply will her into a new body... But with time and effort, she too can be mended back together. (Progress: 15, Cost: )
-[X] Dany (4d6 Progress).

[X] Dreamscaping II: Having created a beacon in the dreamlands now you must consider how one might build a road that will endure the ever-shifting paths of that realm (25 Progress)
-[X] Aenie Caleris (4d6 Progress +2d6 due to specialization), Tolos Scholarum Branch (+2d6 Progress)

[X] Fey Lore: Even though they detest the divine, the Fey are closer to the gods in nature than any mortal ever could and in their endless years, they must have acquired much lore on the matter beside. Seek out the Orphne, the Goblin Market and other Fey gathering grounds in your realm and friendly lands to see what can be bargained for. (Progress: 10, Cost: ???)
-[X] Rina (4d6 Progress), Tyrosh Scholarum Branch (+2d6 Progress)

[X] The Crown of Flowers: Without a doubt, this is one of the most potent magical artifacts you ever witnessed. From it much can be learned, even if it is never put on by anyone.
-[X] Attempt to find the connection it holds to the Court of Stars – and further out knowledge of Artifacts along the way. (Progress: 18)
--[X] Lya (1st body) (4d6 Progress), Naria the Loreseeker (4d6 Progress)

[X] Spell-Crafting
-[X] Research a Greater version of Baleful Teleport [no distance limit, 8th level] (Progress: 16, Cost: ??)
--[X] Lya (2nd body) (4d6 Progress), Stepstones Scholarum Branch (+2d6 Progress)

[X] Stabilization of Sentient Undead:
While the process to craft lesser undead has been greatly refined, those who still possess sentience are a different matter. Their state makes the process meant to stabilize a soulless husk impossible to apply, but further research might be able to find an alternative. (Progress 20/30, Cost 100,000 IM, needs at least one sentient undead as a test subject)
-[X] Wyla Drakelis (4d6 Progress), Naath Scholarum Branch (+2d6 Progress)

[X] The Undeath's End: The secret of creation of the ancient and extremely potent anti-Undead poison you received from Faceless Men is lost to eons... Yet one of the greatest poison-makers the world knows is in your employ, and few other races have as much intimate knowledge of poisons as the Snake-kin, and the Drow, both of whom you have access to. Recreate the ancient mixture (Progress: 0/50, Cost: ??)
-[X] Elaheh Marita (4d6 Progress), Quburn (4d6 Progress),

[X] Tireless Steel, by Sorcery Moved: The art of golem-making is ancient indeed... but one has to wonder if it is possible to wring an armor in the same qualities, to create personal defense truly unsurpassable. (Requires the "Layering the Defenses"-Research Action)
-[X] Develop the basic chassis of the Imperial Powered Armor systems - and create the Warden Pattern armor. (Progress: 8/26, Cost: 140.000 IM)
--[X] Valeria the Wondersmith (4d6 Progress),

[X] The Stone of Memories, The Stone of Visions: The mysterious Serpentstone Projector you recovered from the deeper parts of Riz'Neth's city may not look like much... But you have learned quite well how much but a little show before the audience as large as cities could mean for a ruler.
-[X] Research the Serpentstone Projectors, emphasizing the function of recording visual and auditory signals - something that may well be priceless if a way is found to make more of such "recorders" cheaply, and also searching for a way to integrate them with the MirrorVision network - allowing to both (hopefully) make MirrorVision sets cheaper and easier to make, and to store transmissions shown - perhaps allowing for plays and speeches to be replayed in the future? (Progress: 40/45, Cost: 50.000 IM)
--[X] Riz'Neth (4d6 Progress)

[X] The Mind's Games: The psychological effects of repeated and sustained enchantment on the mental state and brain of the average person (Progress: ??, Cost: ??).
-[X] Velen (4d6 Progress), Mantarys Scholarum Branch (+2d6 Progress)

[X] A Baleful Mirage: You have recently been forwarded a set of spell-scripts and samples by which the Efreeti have been made use of to manipulate the 'Grey Veil'.
-[X] While this may be a technological dead end, studying it will prevent its usage from being as effective in the hands of your enemy and may even be of some use to your allies (Progress: ??, Cost: ??).
--[X] Beryl the Strategist (4d6 Progress), Anu of Sallosh (4d6 Progress), Volantis Scholarum Branch (+2d6 Progress)

[X] Continuing to be on the lookout for the Chosen of Stranger via the dead-drops they were leaving for the Chosen of Smith

Noteworthy points of interest:
[X] Grab notes on Lannisters/CItadel/Various threats off Marwyn
[X] Get the Wildunt's mercenary Fey sorted in

Aight, changes done about Wyverns and Blight's Bane action added, @Crake.

Scholarum sheet update in progress. Adding the fire-souled Dapsara as a teacher in Mantarys (some of Snowfire's old posts got me thinking about NPC mental health again, and this freed slave angel will probably do better when around other friendly angels), not adding the Atropocustras because he's still only a teaching assistant. Anything else?
We didn't get any new classes, right? I've added in Herbalist Alchemists (last month, I think?), but I don't remember if we actually got Mystic Rangers since or if we had only planned on getting them.

@TalonofAnathrax, I can't seem to find the Lillends we summoned and asked to teach ppl, on the gdoc sheet..?
Am maybe blind tho.

We also had Magewrights trained throughout this month:
Magewrights Training will begin on the First Month of Next Year (Tier 2 Spell Casting Class equivalent to Adepts and Hedge Mages)

@DragonParadox, any progress on this?
A pity the Stormweavers were not not able to send anyone yet. Hopefully their own curiosity will be piqued by the accounts of their fellow and the strictures of wars will allow at least a few of their masters to visit soon.

Ok, thanks a lot for the reminder.
And yeah, I'm adding in the 15 Lillends now (well, when I finish with the Mystic Rangers) because this is the first month in which they'll have been teaching. I'll be spreading them among the various schools, not just keeping them all in SD. This way there'll be something to teach Bards in every city. If I'd added them when we'd got them then they would have ended up retroactively teaching for a month before being summoned unless DP did a lot of legwork disentangling the numbers.

OK things look settled. Vote closed.

Part MMMDLXIX: In the Scales of Life and Death
In the Scales of Life and Death

First Day of the Second Month 294 AC

Sarnor would be lead back into its grave this month, you had resolved after conversing with your companions and vassals about threats near and far. Or at the very least you would tear out the rotted heart of the edifice and lessen the threat of the dead, and allow you to turn your back upon the empty plain without their chill breath down your neck.

Of course not all need end this way as Wyla pointed out, for just as she is now among your vassals and Liomond Lashare your representative heading towards Qohor, so too might others choose to join you in doing more than stirring the ashes of dead realms, in life... or in death. The Lady of Naath works towards a means to wrest sanity from death's clutches, a secret you suspect has been found and lost many a time in the world's history for those inclined to seek such answers would not be the sort to share them readily. At the same time Qyburn and Elaheh Marita seek to brew anew the deadly poisons of the Faceless Men meant for those already dead.

Yet no matter the plots and no matter the lore uncovered in the hidden places of the world life goes on, whether in a hermit's cave or a king's castle. Especially in a king's castles these days as the highborn and the wealthy of what were once scores of different realms gather in your court to seek justice, or more often favor in some local matter or another.

The first case to come before you this month is on its face a simple one. Malar Laeraleos, a Volantene sorcerer of some power and proud member of the Old Blood, claims that he has been cheated of his inheritance when his uncle chose to sell several important family properties against all custom, though not imperial law, and move to Sorcerer's Deep where his advancing years would not trouble him. He further accuses the man of dereliction in his duties, having 'fled the city like a coward in the night'.

Grandiose language aside you can see why none of the courts to this point decided to side with him. His uncle Careous had not broken any law and simply disposed of his properties as he saw fit, and indeed had probably taken the path of many other high nobles approaching the twilight of their lives.

On the other side of the coin, reading into the case you have to agree this case was particularly egregious, effectively gutting the already ailing family finances to live a life of ease in Sorcerer's Deep.

How do you rule?

[] Uphold the decision of the courts

[] A title of nobility, no matter in what tongue it is spoken, comes with obligations to kith, kin, and family. Rule that Careous must return some of the funds he liquidated to his heirs.

[] Write in

OOC: We have not done audiences in a while, and since Viserys is staying home for the beginning of the month this looked like a good time for it.

So, erm, when's our offense on Sarnor is going to be happening, exactly?
I'm not really getting the feel for that in the chapter.

It is that, well, it feels like "fight undead first - go infiltrate Qohor/Kill Devils/fight Fey later" makes more sense insofar as enemy retaliation while everyone's away from the task is concerned?

Here's an edited version of the chapter, DP.

I highlighted one word I'm not sure about.

That is indeed how it is going to happen, but not for the first few days of the month. I would like to give some narrative space to establish who goes where before we get to the climax of the month.

[X] Uphold the decisions of the Courts.
-[X] There should be some kind of precedent for this. Unfortunately there isn't too much you can do for the nephew in this scenario because his uncle was not the holder of a noble title recognized by the Crown as having certain dynastic responsibilities which must be upheld, but rather part of the Essosi financial aristocracy who's noble heritage was more tied up in perception of their peers. However as you have already ruled that parents are responsible in part for the inheritance of even their natural born sons and daughters, that is no less true in the case of legitimate family. At the very least the law demands that the nephew not be destitute so long as the Uncle has the financial ability to support him or bequeath a trust upon them.

Scholarum sheets edited. All the numbers in every single table changed, but that's a normal result of adding a new class and not some horrible fuck-up you have to fix. Lillends added, new 5HD bard angel thingy added, Magewrights added (we're going full high magic society baby!) and Mystic Rangers added.

@DragonParadox So if I get this right, if the Crown recognizes a de jure title, the title holder absolutely cannot, y'know, sell his land or any craziness like that, since that's the Crown's land, and the oaths of fealty sort of preclude noble obligations.

However, if someone has one of those "noble of the robe" type of titles, like the Old Blood of Volantis, then that's just... land. With categorically different responsibilities tied up with it, none of them related to governance (barring taxation).

A a note here, there technically is precedent, just not of any applicable sort. The old laws of Volantis state he should not have been able to alienate those properties, but those laws were rendered moot by the conquest.

Pretty much yes, he had no administrative responsibilities or direct fealty.

Yeah, no use relying on that old rat's nest of tangled laws and corruption.

I sympathize with the kid, but our hands are quite tied.
