Interlude DCLXXXVIII: Tales over the Narrow Sea
Tales over the Narrow Sea

Thirtieth Day of the Eleventh Month 293 AC

Rumors from Westeros

The Blackfish up the Mountain Swimming: Amid mounting raids Ser Brynden Tully, Knight of the Bloody Gate, has pledged to bring the Sons of the Mist and their witch to heel, though he has publicly proclaimed that he will take not aid from Tywin Lannister whom he has named responsible for the abandonment of the Vale Lords by the king. Though the Blackfish did not say so in as many words the implication is clear, in binding Jon Arryn to King's Landing as Hand he was forced to neglect his own vassals while attempting to stymie Lannister influence. The Vale, which is to say young Robert Arryn, will take no Lannister and no Lannister wizards as they drive back the clansmen just as they had done in ages past. A discrete message from Yohn Royce reveals more of the Brynden Tully's plans, he aims to go to Oldtown to speak to the Lantern Bearers, seeking magic with which to counter Dala and other sorcerers of the clans. According to the House of Mirrors other agents, however, may head east instead...

Tourney of the Sun: Prince Doran is holding a tourney for his vassal lords and any other knights who care to join, though given that he is out of favor with the crown and not known for lavish spending it is thought not many from beyond Dorne's borders will ride to Sunspear. The Prince of Dorne has explained in confidence that the tourney is a means by which he might personally and safely explain the changes of the age to his vassal lords and share lore of fiends and horrors with them in a way that will impress upon them the gravity of the situation.

With Book and Blade: Rodrik 'the Reader', a man disdained in many of his fellow Ironborn for his love of books and foreign ways as well as his conflicts with the Drowned Men, has put the seat of another ancient House to the torch, though this time strangely with the lady regent of the House at his side. Lady Joana Volmark was said to have sneaked into Pyke alone while carrying her young son, claiming that Volmark Keep has been overrun with monsters from the depths. What followed was a swift and brutal campaign where three of the young lord's uncles proclaimed his mother a traitor and in league with enemies of the Drowned God only to fall one by one to the Regent's men, the last by his own hand. Each was revealed in death to be not a man at all but some sort of hairless shape-shifting monster. The sight of the horrors and the implication that they might be next has shaken the faith of many still opposed to the Reader's rule and only hardened the resolve of his allies.

By brazier the Lord Regent of Pyke has contacted you with news that the happenings were both more terrible and more heartening still. Ser Harras Harlaw, Knight of Grey Garden, together with a group of trusted armsmen, a pair of Lantern Bearers and even a lone Pyromancer have slain a cabal of four Eaters of Minds, capturing what appears to be a sanctum of their magic and several children who have been experimented upon... as was the young Maron Volmark before his mother smuggled him to safety. The children do not appear to be a danger, but he requests an expert to verify this one way or another.

Rumors from Essos

Ward of the Green: The Green Prophet of Qohor has been saved from assassination by 'servants of the corrupt hierarchy' or at least so the faithful claim, as magic grows more common throughout Essos many suspect sorcery for any otherworldly happening. Regardless of the truth of the matter none can deny the assassins impaled by enormous thorns that burst through the stones of the city's main plaza.

Sky Above, Dark Below: The Bearded Priests of Norvos continue the reconstruction of their mysteriously destroyed temple though rumors abound of workers vanishing from the project, dragged down into the very pit they have been tasked to fill. A Volantene mage passing through the city claims to have been attacked by strange creatures of elemental earth which may or may not be the mysterious snatchers. Surprisingly, said mage had been sent there with messages to the local Red Priests in hiding, a token of cooperation between the Mysterium and the Red Faith. He has found the local congregations of the Lord of Light determined to endure the trials and tribulations heaped upon them, though a network to smuggle some of the most vulnerable of their number out of the city is forming.

Academy of Shadows: A Shadowbinder who has been of no small help to the Lorathi authorities in the past has asked permission to found an academy of magic where he might tech his arts. The two princes had agreed to the proposal so long as the mages follow a list of precautions and prescriptions that seems rather familiar to anyone who has even read the Scholarum Charter.

OOC: For anyone wondering what happened with the Iron Islands... well it started with a nat 100 and went on from there.

Ah, Tywin, your plans fall apart bit by bit...

👌 Perfect excuse. And he can probably more than afford it. Dorne has been getting richer lately.

Well, this was insanely lucky for us. Unbelievably lucky. Asha's lucky to have her uncle as a regent.

Please be Shub Niggurath lurking there.

Huh, so it doesn't go to Hell or the Abyss, just to the Elemental Plane of Earth? Still not ideal for the civilians.

They're prepped and ready for a visit from us, it looks like. They should be good to join us very soon, which is good since they're in the middle of the ocean and war with the Deep Ones looms.

Ooh, that's a good rumor post, @DragonParadox. Lots of meat for us to chew on.

We're going to need to vet that Shadowbinder in Lorath to make certain he isn't an agent of the Bloodstone Emperor.

Going out of his way to help the city an achieve stability over a long period of time is a display of foresight and competence that... anyone serving Dark Gods and Elder Evils has yet to exhibit, honestly... okay, Bling Blang's Court Eunuch who betrayed Mah Boi was playing the long-con pretty well, so I guess that's why you're preaching caution.

Is Doran perhaps interested in the Most Interesting Man in the World making an appearance and perhaps pulling some monsters out of his magic bag of wonders? :V

So I thought about it and unfortunately I don't think I can do a fourth update today. It's dealing with a lot of characters I have not written before and just generally a fun scene and I don't want to rush it near midnight like this.

There was also a noticable Rakshasa in that tiny tribe in the Valyrian badlands.
Just on the off chance he would prove valuable...

I think being Immortal LE schemers and infiltrators, without the ideological blinders of the greater fiend-races, might make the Rakshasa, at least the greater ones, relativly longsighted.

I agree, also in such a vast system like Baator, screwing over your peers is the only way to get ahead. I think there's more room to maneuver around in the Shadow Empire which doesn't necessarily encourage painting a target on your back, since you stand out more when you do too well.

Ascending might actually be a less political process under the Shadow than it is in Baator.
Like, Rakshasa can to some degree influence how they will be reborn, the greater they are the more influence they have.
At least DP told us that the Maharaja we killed in Valyria would very likely stay a Maharaja, by his own power over his afterlife.

So research, meditation and lore-gethering/stealing is propably as relevant to a Rakshasa's future (next life) position as influence and political standing are.
That allows for a stronger orientation towards common success over individual backstabbing than Hell does, since your future is not dependant on outward factors like your next superiors decision who to promote.

Have we heard anything about this dude before? If so, I don't remember him at all.

He came out of the woods and the "gods" he proclaimed halped the city in the time of famine, iirc?

We probably should start focusing on stuff close to us once Tiamat is done.
I'm thinking Qohor being scouted and the local Forge being dealt with, the Devils being killed off in Ghis, and the Undead of Sarnor getting their leadership killed off.
Those 3 are all wildcards too close to us to be comfortable opening potentially months-long campaign with Deep Ones.
