Secrets and other intangibles, such as one's lifespan. The currency of the Goblin Market is secrets, which coincidentally is why we never did business there.
There is no money to be taxed. As a result we're taxing the only thing of value that gets passed around.
Yep. Secrets are the only things in the Goblin Market that we can tax.
Wouldn't it be interesting if they were able to bargain for people's shadows, or some other means of transferring XP, then share a portion of that with us. It wouldn't be good for leveling our people, but paying for Permanent spells, Wishes, etc.Yep. Secrets are the only things in the Goblin Market that we can tax.
Unless of course we expect the Hooded Lord to send us monthly tribute in the form of Fey trinkets, but personally I'd rather stick to Lya's enchantments.
I wonder if there are any fey trying to sell immortality as a subscription service. All they need to do is sell some minor buffs/items to peasants for years off their lives, bundle up the time, then sell the packaged life to mages and/or nobility for favors or better items. It'd be like health insurance, but more profitable and less risky.
... I think I understand devils better now.
That would be a neat little bit of business, if you had a mechanism or ability to harvest small bits of lifespan then package them in larger bundles for resale.I wonder if there are any fey trying to sell immortality as a subscription service. >_<@egoo don't mean to be a pain in the ass, but I've been meaning to ask. In regards to your map edits, could you edit back in the name of each province as you color over them? I can dig up Azel's version, but @DragonParadox unmarked it so it's a pain in the ass (too, ) now.
It's not a big issue for me. The Hooded Lord and the Goblin Market are uniquely positioned to gather secrets from a wide range of sources, which could be of great assistance for us.Regardless at the moment what is specified
"it's just that our taxation would be him passing along vital intel when it comes into his hands."
is what is required of any one on Imperial soil as a matter of course, withholding vital Intel can be an executionable offence depending on circumstances.
The Hooded Lord not withholding this information should not count as him making payment, whatever he takes a cut of he needs to provide our cut of it (it's clearly divisible and distributable if he can get a cut of every deal) or he needs to provide equivalent value the same way mortal lords might pay taxes in grain even if their cut might be in cattle, armament or lumber.
The implication that a Vassal is free to profit off of threats against the realm is awful, let alone when it's a Fey Lord and influences their narrative.
Here's my latest proposal for all actions:Okay, I've finished most of the Provincial Strategic actions except the Research ones, since I still need to look over @egoo's notes for that and then probably shoot a few tags around to talk about what we're prioritizing and why, but other than that I need to figure out which PC is doing what this turn next, update the Military sheet, finish the accounting for the monthly expenses, and then do the full turn-plan write-up draft.
Researcher: Qyburn.[] The Secret of Life and Death: Analyze the lore obtained from Lord Bolton and Qyburn and see to bring the efforts made by the ex-maester to their conclusion, creating undead creatures that neither spread decay, nor need the constant attention of a skilled mage. Assets: Anu, Shadow Tor, Melisande."Name Pending 4, I'm tired of this": Look into the Shadow Fotress of Tiamat upon the Shadow Plane - aquire plans of it and the teritory around it
Assets: Viserys, Zherys, ??[] A Fire, snuffed out: With Volantis having sworn to you, perhaps it's time to openly close down a threat that persisted in the city ever since your first visit. Break into Ymeri's mansion, and clear out all of her remaining influence - with the mansion itself, if needed.
Assets: Misfits and Thoros[] The Hagswood: Found about a day's ride south of Pinkmaiden Keep this dreary stretch of woods was according to local legend the site of amass hanging of either and outlaw band or a peaceful village, depending on who is telling the story. Of late some of the darker denizens of the of the Feywyld have been drawn there, by the lingering miasma of death and decay amid the stagnant waters, earning the woods a new name and far more travelers seeking it on secret midnight journeys. Many do not return and of those who do none are unchanged.
Likely Foes: Green and Anis Hags
CR: 8-9
Assets: Relath, Viserys, Breath Taker OR Blight's Bane, ??[] Into the City of Glass: Having established the economic relationship with two other Genie Empires, perhaps it's time to visit Marids as well – not to mention, that they once succeeded in driving out Mind-Eaters, and Marid mercenaries may prove invaluable in future conflicts with them. (Opposition: ??; Rewards: ??)
Assets: Viserys, Soft Strider, ??[] The Court of Goldengrove: A Driad queen resides in Rowan's Nest, guarding an entrance to Feywild – and alongside her a Court of nymphs and satyrs. Go there, and learn more of what place they seek in this world of returning magic – if they can be trusted, or relied upon with deals fairly made (Opposition: ?? Wylkfae, A Driad Queen, Satyrs, Nymphs; Rewards: ??).
Assets: Xor, Sandor, Danar and Alyssa Crowl.[] The Barrow of the First King: Generally speaking most ancient barrows of the First Men are conveniently out of the way that the intrepid explorer does not have to disturb more than the odd flock of sheep to enter them, unfortunately the largest and most famed in all the North happens to have a town on top, Barrowtown where the living laugh, sing, weep and sigh above the bones of the ancient dead. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the tales of riches and magic found in other tombs the people of Barrowton have in recent weeks begun digging down, the ancient entrances having long since been forgotten and built over.
Strangely enough rather than the vengeful dead their desecration seems to have drawn the attention of twisted and malicious fey, perhaps the last of the barrow's ancient guardians, for he whose bones lie at the heart of the ancient complex was once beloved of the land spirits.
However rather than avenging themselves upon those who would disturb the tomb the fey have taken to tormenting the weakest and most vulnerable of the locals, beggars, urchins and petty thieves, beneath the notice of Lady Dustin if not Bloodraven. The ancient Sorcerer explained that if you do not end help he likely will likely in the form of Dannar and Alyssa, before some fool actually does manage to disturb the tomb and its wrthful king.
Likely Foes: Tooth Fairy, Lamp Blighter, Redcap (Malicious fey) and Undead (Barrow)
CR: 6-8 (Malicious fey) and 10-12 (Barrow proper)
Assets: Lots of minor PCs we have, can't know quite well which, @Goldfish would judge better.[] Capping off a Danger: Cleaned out as most of darker WylkFae have been by Faith and the clansmen, some still escaped. Hunt down the dangerous Redcap murdering travelers, now moved to kingswood in search for more prey. (Opposition: ??, Redcaps; Rewards: ??)
[] A Darker Kind of Fey: Deal with various Fey of Court of Stars proving a danger to people of Westeros:
-[] Swift Eye, a Quickling who haunts the outskirts of Oldtown alongside his troupe has been known to deal with Deep Ones. On the other hand he has helped the Lantern Bearers as much if not more. His greed seems to be the great constant of his being. Due to his loyalty to the court he has been left in peace, though it has been foretold that he will meet an unfortunate end soon at the hands of Deep One agents. He is counted among the Gold faction.
-[] Jagged Knife, a Redcap whose court has set up on the edge of the Rainwood ambushing travelers, particularly families with young children whom he torments with dreadful choices trading lives until they go mad. He is only nominally part of the Court of Stars. Crimson Lotus suspects he gained that position by some manner of blackmail. Killing him might actually gain favor with his supposed patron of the Indigo, if one can stomach working with a being who tacitly allowed such monstrous deeds.
Assets: Amrelath, Guardian Naga, Riz'neth.[] The Rot of Stone, on paths of Trade: Clear out the infestation of Rotstone near the Xorn trade route. (Opposition: ??, Aberrations; Rewards: ??).
Life might have value to both, but a decade is much less important to something that doesn't age than it is to something that only gets around 7 of them. Not to mention they could trade for things other than secrets or gold. It's probably not that simple. There's a hidden cost behind every bargain. For example, proportionate to the exchange for an extended life, the Fey will only accept something which they believe is of commiserate, and yet equally intangible value. Considering the span of years itself is meaningless to Fey yet priceless to mortals, the cost to the mortal often ends up being a deal that favors the Fey more in the end, such as Menel being offered another 60 years for forty of servitude, rather than being able to enjoy the full span of new youth in accordance to his own desires.
The Fey could gain a lot from this kind of service, but in the end bargains made are often done for amusement or to obtain things that would be impossible otherwise. Gold is an empty bauble, as they recognize that only mortals place, leverage and invest in its value. But a life holds value to both, so life, secrets, and other intangibles are a component to all their bargains, because to them it is the only real currency.
For example, if some desired to trade secrets for more years of life, they would have no secrets the Fey did not know. Some secrets could ruin a man to be revealed, or place them under another person's power, and paradoxically, the value of secrets differ, so only by living an interesting and varied life (likely with a component of risk) do you obtain secrets worth bargaining over. With that in mind, you are always paying interest on the years you've gained.
It's not a big issue for me. The Hooded Lord and the Goblin Market are uniquely positioned to gather secrets from a wide range of sources, which could be of great assistance for us.
By involving the Imperial bureaucracy, we're also positioning ourselves to easily track who is making deals and what they're bargaining for. That another great source of Intel for us.
Probably gonna nab Garin or Tyene from this. Here's my latest proposal for all actions:

@Crake, please take note
Garin is not assigned anywhere just for this reason
Getting some more soldiers while getting rid of weak-willed, subversive, incompetent or corrupt officers from among the Pentoshi mercenaries. Most of the legwork is basically done thanks to Oberyn, and he should be available for a combat action as per usual.Garin is not assigned anywhere just for this reason
Although I still don't get what that action of yours is.

You're reading into it too much. In the end the Hooded Lord is required to pass on all vital intel. The framing was nothing more than to get him to accept the bargain and swear fealty. It sets a horrible precedent and this isnt worth that.
You do not harbour secrets of threats to the Empire, it is not allowed.
This is not a privilege anyone should enjoy or need to be paid not to do.
We're building anti-gravity fightercraft capable of Plane Shifting, which carry, among other weapons, teleporting bomb Constructs, along with much larger cruisers which can do the same on a grander scale. We've also stepped up production of our Herald Constructs, which are basically sentient self-propelled artillery pieces. Each mage we train also has the potential to serve as artillery. So, concerning the ground wars that are going to happen with the Golden Company, and the conquest of Westeros, how are we on Arty. Are we going for cannons, rockets, trebushes or something else? We do have AOE attacks for our companies and our selves, but we can't be everywhere at once. That and any good advancing army can use Arty.
You're reading into it too much. In the end the Hooded Lord is required to pass on all vital intel. The framing was nothing more than to get him to accept the bargain and swear fealty.
Nothing in the Goblin Market is taxable in the first place, so his taxes are what he already takes as taxes.
Anyone know of a good, cost effective, non-toxic insulating materials?
Dirt is a great insulator, but probably not what you're looking for.Anyone know of a good, cost effective, non-toxic insulating materials?
Actually, would it be possible to breed a special kind of plant that can grow inbetween a stone wall and wooden slats moved up against them? Maybe even one that can generate heat when fed certain elements as part of a regular diet?
And similarly to piping running to each house, maybe we could circulate cold air through a shared circulating system?
It'd be neat to make some kind of steel, stone and glass arcology and include both as a proof of concept, at least...
Having some kind of insulator and then an air circulatory system to blow in hot or warm air would be perfect for winter for large city populations. Hard to roll out in places without advanced city planning, but that's just more reason for people to move in!Dirt is a great insulator, but probably not what you're looking for.
Stone Wool probably isn't outside of our manufacturing capacity with a bit of magical assistance, but we don't have much IC reason to come up with it. Would definitely need research.
Something I've though about before, but would be limited by the need for Fabricate spells, would be to create fairly large but relatively lightweight wall panels from hollow steel forms. Rather than simply being hollow, though, Fabricate would allow us to create them so that the internal spaces are actually a vacuum. Hard to get a better insulating material than that.
Him being a God of artificers certainly does help.[] Safety in Numbers: The Hell-forged talismans you recovered from slavers in Gogoss may just be the answer to the problem of protecting the soldiers of your Legions, or at least one not excessively expensive-
