Strange Hunt
Fourteenth Day of the Tenth Month 293 AC
The nest, if nest it be, will keep. The pack might scatter at any moment, and so you fly north along the river and then over the eastern bank until you see the pack running between the trees below you. "
Change," you command in the tongue of Valyria as you had so many times before, seeking to transmute flesh warped by sorcery into a more harmless forms, the word
echoes through the twisted vine-choked trees, seeking to snare them all with a single spell, but the leader is unharmed and of the others only two are snared, twisting and shrinking with the sound of twisting bone and cartilage.
That is when the leader does the first thing that surprises you, rather than bellow a challenge or try to flee it turns to grab one of the afflicted before running off, scattering the pack. So much for an easy sweep. Still, you are far swifter and more agile in the air than the lumbering creatures are on the ground. Twisting and turning to catch sight of them through the thick canopy, the spirit you had conjured keeping you on track, you manage to catch another pair, but it is Vee who managed to catch the leader, turning the murk under the trees
cloying and thick like sap to a fly. The remaining pair escape in spite of Lya's, Dany's, and Malarys' efforts.
Captured 1 Mighty Ghonhatine and 4 regular Ghonhatines
That is when the second surprise of the day arrives, this one far less welcome, for when you reach the nest you find that it has been ripped apart, unrecognizable scraps of bone and offal scattered on the bank and flowing in the river, not even a trace of magic to hint at who or what may have done this.
Vee frowns, first looking then touching the moist ground carefully. "There aren't any fresh tracks around here besides the lizards."
"So whatever did this must have flown," you guess. You
might have missed a particularly swift and silent flyer while you hunted the beasts.
"Or it tore
itself apart," Lya says. "You did say it looked alive and it had plenty of... limbs." Curiosity wars with nausea on her expression, before the former wins out as you knew it would. "Maybe we should question one of the prisoners..."
"Not here," Malarys interjects thoughtfully. "Previous reports indicate that the fleshwarped always fled when confronted with strength enough to capture them, and now this, something destroying an obviously magical site before we can study it. We are dealing with some manner of higher mind at work here, and I doubt we will be so fortunate as to find one as benign as Set'Var's guardians here."
"Doubt anyone wants to be the heir of his shit," Ser Richard grumbles, looking down at the river as a flat horned
worm-thing breaks the surface to look up with stalked eyed.
"That looks kind of cute," Dany offers after following the knight's gaze. In the faintly disbelieving silence that follows she adds, "Xor's cute."
That, no one can deny. Alas that you do not have the time for idle curiosity.

OOC: Another short update since I need to know your long term plans. Expect to see more extinct animals, both as animals and other things here in Sothoryos. If GRRM can rob the Mesozoic for setting elements I can do the same with the rest of the fossil record.
